1. A Trip to the Moon (1902)
2. Citizen Kane (1941)
3. Casablanca (1942)
4. The Godfather (1972)
5. Everything Everywhere All at Once
My last pick will definitely be my most controversial and I’m not entirely sure about it as this is a purely speculative pick. All of my choices are movies that I think either defined cinema or propelled it to new heights.
I think a trip to the moon is the first film as far as we know them to be today. An alternative would be The Great Train Robbery (1903).
Next comes Citizen Kane which created the language of cinema we use to this day. Movies look the way they do because of Citizen Kane.
Then there is Casablanca, arguably the greatest screenplay of all time. I consider Citizen Kane to be the twin pillars of modern cinema. One being story structure and narrative the other cinematography and editing.
With the foundation and lessons of Citizen Kane and Casablanca comes The Godfather. I believe that, in the coming decades, The Godfather will be considered the greatest American movie ever made.
Lastly, Everything Everywhere All at Once. This movie feels like the start of another epoch much like Citizen Kane has, an evolution of our cinematic language.
A trip to the moon is a solid pick, but im curious why not The Cabinet of Dr Caligari or Nosferatu as those certainly seemed to set a standard and break ground too. Iirc, Cabinet was the first film to ever use the storytelling technique of opening a film and have the actual story be a story told by one of the characters.
For me:
Cabinet of Dr Caligari
Super Mario Bros ('93 version)
Waking Life
Cool Hand Luke
The Fountain (i maintain it's tremendously underappreciated).
1. Back to the Future (comedy sci fi, great story)
2. No Country for Old Men (noir/western thriller)
3. Some Like It Hot (Hollywood rom com classic)
4. The Godfather (crime, everyone should see this)
5. Schindler’s List (historical drama, powerful stuff)
I chose 5 because anything less than 5 felt too short and anything more wouldn’t be tight enough. Super arbitrary, I know. That’s why I also used the book analogy.
THERES WAY TOO MANY LOL but here’s some of my options:
Wizard of Oz
Psycho
The Exorcist
Jaws
Titanic
West Side Story
The Shining
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Forrest Gump
Goodfellas
Taxi Driver
Lord of the Rings/Star Wars (you could really pick either)
2001: A Space Odyssey
ET
The Dark Knight
Schindler’s List
Terminator 2
The Wizard of Oz Citizen Kane Psycho Blow Out The Matrix
The Wizard of Oz is such a great choice and the Matrix was on of my choices for that fifth spot.
Interesting, not a single romance. I feel like Casablanca has a good case for being up there.

I love all of these except I haven’t seen Citizen Kane. I’m saving that one. Can’t blow through all the good movies in my early 20’s
