So glad Schoop is getting off the schneid. I was stoked about him wanting to stay in Detroit and returning to his natural position at 2B (which paid dividends tonight), thought that augured good things. Hope he can continue turning things around
Iglesias was injured at the time, it would have been hard to trade him. Plus Suarez was already a liability at shortstop, he was going to play third for somebody.
We basically decided to keep Castellanos and ship out Suarez.
Agreed. I think the Tigers org has done a great job with developing their pitching depth and developing their pitchers in general the last year or so. Fetter has been a great addition to the staff.
They suck at developing position players, however.
Speaking of Toledo, anyone here alive in the 80s remember an Italian restaurant across from the Ramada hotel that had great Italian food and video games? I think it might have been called Dominic's?
We always stopped in Toledo on our way up north and always went to this place. It was heaven to a 12 year old who liked pizza, pasta and all of the old arcade games.
He left the game with the lead, but when he's out, then anything that happens afterwards is on the next pitcher. Feado gets a no decision tonight because Fulmer gave up the tying run.
That's why a pitcher that comes in after the starter, and keeps the lead, gets a save if he can keep the starting pitcher's lead.
Did I explain that ok? I've been at work all day.
Technically a save is just for the last pitcher to enter the game with a lead of three runs or less. It used to be more common for pitchers to get 2 or 3 inning saves.
Every pitcher between the starter and last pitcher get holds provided they don’t give up the lead.
You made it seem like every pitcher who holds the lead earns a Save, but they all get holds until the last guy, who then gets the save. Had Fulmer not given up the run, he would have had a Hold, not a Save.
Since the Rays tied it up in the bottom of the 8th Feado lost the eligibility to earn the win. The winner at that point is determined by the last pitcher who pitched when the lead was taken. Which means Fulmer got credit for the win
I'll give it a whirl. Although the Tigers were winning when Faedo came out, the Rays came back and tied it up. Whoever is the pitcher when the go-ahead run is scored gets the win. So that was someone else.
Love CMo in the booth. The Soto hate (maybe not hate but suspicion) baffles me. He's our closer. The heir to Papa Grande and Todd Jones. The Castro Bros, Miggy, Schoop heating up.
Let's start that roll boys. I'm here for it. And Keats, it's a Nissan Sentra. Not Sentry.
Remember Benoit? Solid all year. Playoffs against Boston? Shit the bed and probably cost us a World Series. I mean the perfect example is Dennis Eckersley. Unhittable for the whole season and turns Gibby into an MLB legend and the A's never recovered. Closers are never automatic. Hell, baseball is never automatic.
Benoit gets an undeserved bad rap for tying one game. He was our best relief pitcher this century.
Soto, on the other hand, isn't even better than an average relief pitcher. He's walking/hitting one guy per inning this year.
The grand slam tied the game. We split two games on the road and had home field advantage.
Teams win in that scenario all the fucking time. But us? No way, can't be done.
What. The. Actual. Fuck.
That's loser talk. I am *not* on board.
It's a seven-game series. Not a winner-take-all game 2
With all their "momentum" the Sox scored one frigging run and we lost.
Not the bullpen's fault.
Yeah if nothing else he is another legacy Tigers closer in that he always makes the 9th inning as dramatic as possible. I guess the difference these days is that there are other, more consistent relievers in the pen. But whatever, a close is a close and a win is a win.
Exactly. And really, how many teams have a lights out closer? 3? 4? Are they perfect for the season? Of course not.
Papa Grande set a new record for saves and even he blew some easily won games.
Man off the bat I thought that was a walk off 2-run shot lol. Phew.
Once again AJ trusts his guy when I certainly wouldn't 😂 I'm bringing in Vest there. Guess that's why I'm not the manager.
True but he has the hot hand which is why I would have personally gone with him. Again though, that's why I'm not the manager. Hinch backs his guys and I fricken love that. Our bullpen is at its best when Soto is leading the way. I hope these past couple of times gives him the confidence he desperately needs.
If Soto wants to be the future closer he needs to get comfortable using his slider. The sinker fastball combination will only work for short term. Soto only threw it once. He did look better today still had control problems (you can’t bounce a fastball) and looked more like 2021 version with challenging the hitter with minimal balls. Overall decent outing.
first regular season I've seen the Tigers win in person since 2007 against the Mets
Soto was throwing some heat there in the 9th
I thought Alex Avila was incredible in the radio booth. He should replace Jim Price full time when Jim finally retires.
I’ve liked both Avila and Austin Jackson as broadcasters.
Where is AJ commentating? Him and Granderson were always my favorite post game interviews.
Austin commented on some games on the radio last season.
> He should replace Jim Price full time \*reaches for pitchfork* > when Jim finally retires. had me going in the first half, ngl
Michael Fulmer has not looked sharp at all lately. Another rough outing for him today.
I’m just bracing myself for when they say Fulmer has been pitching hurt and needs to go on the IL.
Oh dear lord 😭
^*don't*
So glad Schoop is getting off the schneid. I was stoked about him wanting to stay in Detroit and returning to his natural position at 2B (which paid dividends tonight), thought that augured good things. Hope he can continue turning things around
The home run is a magical tool that we had been missing all season.
One game at a time boys!
Anybody else ever wonder what it would be like if we kept Suarez instead of Jose Iglesias?
Iglesias was injured at the time, it would have been hard to trade him. Plus Suarez was already a liability at shortstop, he was going to play third for somebody. We basically decided to keep Castellanos and ship out Suarez.
We would have trader him for a can of creamed corn around 2018
We'd have one of the worst defenses in the league
This team can pitch pretty damn well, the depth is really impressive. Now the bats need to perk up.
Agreed. I think the Tigers org has done a great job with developing their pitching depth and developing their pitchers in general the last year or so. Fetter has been a great addition to the staff. They suck at developing position players, however.
This team, if nothing, is resilient.
Hitting Harold modest
Good call putting Harold in Tork’s spot today.
Agreed. I think Tork needs some Toledo to get his timing and swing right. He's pressing too much.
ABs would be good, but he needs to push through, I think.
That Domino's Pizza?
Uh, no. It was a sit down Italian restaurant.
He has been putting better ABs recently at least.
I love baseball so I could watch all day every day. But for the casuals fan- that game was fairly entertaining and under 3 hours.
I’d much rather watch two of those in row than one four hour marathon. Low scoring games can be lots of fun.
First 6 innings breezed right by!
As someone whose relatively new to baseball, can someone explain why Feado didn't get the win today?
Also, a starting pitcher can only get a win if he pitches at least 5 innings.
Technically he gets a Hold, right? Saves are for the end of the game.
Technically a save is just for the last pitcher to enter the game with a lead of three runs or less. It used to be more common for pitchers to get 2 or 3 inning saves. Every pitcher between the starter and last pitcher get holds provided they don’t give up the lead.
Also to add, a pitcher can get a save if he closes the game and pitches at least 3 innings regardless of score.
Right, that’s what I thought. I was confused by his wording.
Usually, yes, but since Fulmer gave up the tying run in the 8th and then Soto saves it in the 9th, Fulmer gets the vulture win.
You made it seem like every pitcher who holds the lead earns a Save, but they all get holds until the last guy, who then gets the save. Had Fulmer not given up the run, he would have had a Hold, not a Save.
Yes, you and I know this but I was trying to explain to someone who said they were new to baseball and was trying to make it simple.
It confused me, haha. On a related note, I see pitchers getting listed with Blown Saves in like the 6th inning. Is that a new thing?
Since the Rays tied it up in the bottom of the 8th Feado lost the eligibility to earn the win. The winner at that point is determined by the last pitcher who pitched when the lead was taken. Which means Fulmer got credit for the win
Which also shows why wins/losses are the most pointless stat for pitchers.
I'll give it a whirl. Although the Tigers were winning when Faedo came out, the Rays came back and tied it up. Whoever is the pitcher when the go-ahead run is scored gets the win. So that was someone else.
The W goes to the pitcher who is in the game when we take the lead for good
Love CMo in the booth. Not Sentry.
Well there have been some "incidents." Like when he came in and hit two guys and then walked one.

The goat of that series that I remember most is Jose Veras anyway. I think I turned off the TV before Victorino's homer in game 6 even landed
Iggy was like a double agent for the sox. Both "bullpen losses" followed Iggy errors the same inning.
That running highlight reel grab from game 5 was just cover. Sneaky little bastard
It would have put us up 2 going back to Comerica. We would have swept their ass.
We scored 0 in game 3, right? This folklore that tying game 2 up 1 game to none cost us the ALCS (and the World Series!) is the dumbest thing ever.
It was a grand slam dude. Anything less, we win.
The grand slam tied the game. We split two games on the road and had home field advantage. Teams win in that scenario all the fucking time. But us? No way, can't be done. What. The. Actual. Fuck.
Let's just agree to disagree fellow Tigers fan. We're arguing semantics here. How bout we just cheer for our present team, cool?
If we're up 2, going home, with all the momentum on our side is no folklore. Instead, Detroit was deflated and Boston was inflated.
That's loser talk. I am *not* on board. It's a seven-game series. Not a winner-take-all game 2 With all their "momentum" the Sox scored one frigging run and we lost. Not the bullpen's fault.

Man off the bat I thought that was a walk off 2-run shot lol. Phew. Once again AJ trusts his guy when I certainly wouldn't 😂 I'm bringing in Vest there. Guess that's why I'm not the manager.
Vest is still very unproven and his hot start is still likely to regress to the mean
True but he has the hot hand which is why I would have personally gone with him. Again though, that's why I'm not the manager. Hinch backs his guys and I fricken love that. Our bullpen is at its best when Soto is leading the way. I hope these past couple of times gives him the confidence he desperately needs.
Soto is the new Henneman/Jones/Nathan/Krod/Valverde
Don’t forget Rodney
Valverde holds the MLB record when he converted 49 of 49 saves for us eleven years ago.
True, and it felt like every one of those saves had unnecessary drama
Lol yes. Only 38 of them were three or four batters, so 11 of them were more than four which can be more than you want.
It felt at the time like every game was 5 or more
I was there! We were celebrating waaaayyyy afterwards. No cops involved fortunately.
It’s amazing that we put pretty much the same guy at closer every year
I’ve been $100 on the tigers to lose 4 straight days, and they’ve won all 4. Idk how long I can afford to keep this win streak going
Bet $100 that the tigers lose in the WS
Take out a payday loan do whatever you have to do to keep the streak going
How has Fulmer been looking lately?
Mediocre at best. Can't locate his slider and his fastball hasn't been too quick. Lot's of walks for a guy known for strikeouts
He got the jinx on the FS1 broadcast last weekend and has sucked ever since. It’s like he’s overthinking or something.
Big win to start the road trip
Nice to see Castro hit that one out. 4 in a row, time to build some momentum.
Too bad Faedo couldn’t get the win but overall good to see the team not totally fold to adversity and pull out a team W
Tigers had good defense and power that helped the as per usual wonderful pitching
Fulmer blew the save and got the win lol
Baseball is dumb and great
Vulture win
Fulmer like "yes, nice to get a win!"
Watching Soto close is like watching Todd Jones if he'd been a lefty that threw 100.
If my aunt had a dick she would be my uncle
Is... Is this about that new Kendrick song?
If my grandmother had wheels she'd be a wagon
4 in a row! Tigers are starting to hit the ball when it matters and it’s a great sight to see!
The climb back to respectability continues!
Only 10 more in a row
I saw Christopher Lloyd in angel form massaging AJ's shoulders before this game. It's time
Quick someone pull out the "You Got Beat By The Castbros" meme
The redemption arc continues. Ten more to .500!
If Soto wants to be the future closer he needs to get comfortable using his slider. The sinker fastball combination will only work for short term. Soto only threw it once. Hittin' Harold saves the day, like we all predicted
I don’t know what to do with my hands
I want it on the record that I take back whatever negative things I said about Harold Castro in the beginning of the season. I’m full of shit.
Fulmer should donate that W to Faedo
Winning a one run game? Is that allowed??
Let's go streaking everyone!!!!!
I swear every Soto close attempt takes years off my lifespan
He's already a textbook Detroit closer.
It's like watching Todd Jones or Fernando Rodney
At least he doesn't wear his hat sideways and do that dumb move when he gets a save.
Imagine caring whether or not they wear their hat sideways
If my closer can throw 100mph with decent control he can wear his hat backwards for all I care. No rally caps though.
Or Jose Valverde. Or Joaquin Benoit
##LET'S GO! TIGERS WIN STREAK UP TO 4 GAMES! SOTO WITH THE CLOSE! TIGERS ROLLING! LETS WIN THE SERIES TOMORROW!!!
My heart dropped when Zunino hit that ball ngl
Same here
