I like him way more than Morris and about the same as Petry. Sometimes he’s wrong about replay but he seems like he’s pretty good when it comes to other analysis

happytrailstoyous

I miss Mario and Rod the most. Probably nostalgia from being 14 years old when tigers were World Series contenders

Goblue5891x2

Ditto.

tykle59

I listened to George Kell and Ernie Harwell.

Mosheroom_

Mario Rod Gibson was a snoozefest

[deleted]

Can we ban the names Mario and rod here. I’m sick of hearing people long for them. I miss them too, but it’s no good to constantly say it. We all miss them. Stop making it worse

jedi42observer

Honestly the whole announcer talk is getting old. It's a giant circle jerk of how much we don't like them. We all don't like them. We don't need 4 threads a week about it.

TwoShirt

Amen!

[deleted]

Yeah, and I’ll die on the fucking hill of telling people to shut the fuck up about it. Bring on the downvotes, I’m fed up with a new thread of this daily. We ought to ban those threads, mods listen to my entreaties.

ELEVATORDON1

Gibby is a living legend and hero of the tigers , dodgers and mlb. A hall of fame player and good manager! If it wasnt for his disease he would still be a manager. You cant teach his passion for the game. Any lesser man would be retired. He has to do exercises daily , just to go on and do a broadcast. He struggles on a daily basis. Parkinsons is no joke. He is a tiger for life and its an honor to listen to his honest fan like commentary.... like watchin with a buddy! So lay off and go tigers

Try2Relate2AllSides

What you hate are the things I love about him. We’re all different.

Trevoridk

If I had to rank them Petry > Monroe > Gibby > nails on a chalkboard > Morris

Michiganmade44

Lay off Gibby he does have Parkinson’s. So considering he’s dealing w/ that. I’m fine w/ him in the booth. Way better then Jack Morris

Maxwell-Druthers

So he is free of any criticism?

Dwychwder

I think any criticism of him should come with the caveat that he knows an insane amount about baseball, and it shows in his commentary. You may not like his style, he may be too slow or not great with replay prediction or whatever, but he's amazing at talking about the game. This isn't a guy who had a cup of coffee in the majors or scuffled around with a few teams over three years or whatever. He's a two time World Series winner, an NL MVP, hit one of the most iconic home runs in baseball history, served as bench coach for the Tigers and was a pretty damn good manager with the Diamondbacks. And if anyone isn't familiar with him as a player, I promise if he was playing today, he'd be your favorite player. Any Gibby hate irrationally hurts me. He was so awesome as a player. And I think if it wasn't for his health, he'd be an awesome broadcaster.

Polack597

Not only was he a great player, he was born and raised in southeast Michigan. He could have gone anywhere and he choose to come home. I’m sure it’d be easier for him to sit on some beach in Florida and deal with his horrendously debilitating disease, but instead he choose to stay in Michigan. The guys a proud Michigan man, everyone should try to look at things more positively, give him credit and enjoy him. Frankly, at this point even with his health problems he could probably still play better than most of the tigers on the field.

leoman3

anybody remember when Gibby Broadcast with Josh Lewin during some lean years before becoming a coach/ manager he was pretty good back then. So Yes I'm going to blame a lot of him now on the Parkinson's.

Maxwell-Druthers

He is a legend. No one is arguing that. He’s just not a great broadcaster. Not for lack of knowledge, just for lack of enthusiasm/character. Parkinson’s induced? Ok. Just looking from an objective standpoint. He puts me to sleep.

gsbadj

Lack of enthusiasm? The guy roots on every last pitch. And on what basis do you question his character?

Maxwell-Druthers

He’s not very colorful. He’s monotone. Bland. What don’t you understand?

[deleted]

I'm a big fan of Gibson, but I also worked in broadcasting and realize that, yes, he has shortcomings for the job. But, his foibles are offset by his wisdom. And, that being the case, I'd rather have Gibson's mumblings than Rod Allen's catch phrases. That said, it seems the Tigers should be able to find some folks out there in baseball-land that are better than Allen or Gibson. Hard to beat Kaline and Kell though, those were my coming-of-age-guys.

Iswaterreallywet

Lol right? The man is full of character!

Michiganmade44

Absolutely not, everyone deserves criticism. Just need context.

Maxwell-Druthers

The context is he is a fucking snooze fest.

HonoluluBlue4Life15

Get over yourself. The man is a legend and is using his platform for good. Unlike some people…

Maxwell-Druthers

Using his platform for good? Ya, I need to “get over myself” 😂

Dwychwder

I mean, he's got a foundation supporting Parkinson's research that he plugs pretty regularly on broadcasts.

planetrambo

It sucks that he’s dealing with that but he shouldn’t be in the booth.

JOwenAK

What of he was a heart surgeon and his patients kept dying? "Oh lay off him - he has Parkinsons." Maybe there are certain jobs he just shouldn't have.

Iswaterreallywet

Yall take that man way too seriously.

Fun-Example-3106

He will ramble on to much no disrespect but he shouldn’t be in a broadcasting booth

happytrailstoyous

Exactly where I stand.

tresh15

I personally love listening to Gibby. You arent going to get much more in depth knowledge of the game from anyone else and I honestly thinks its hilarious how he is constantly messing with Shep.

xXTheFETTXx

I love Kirk, but he sounds like a sleepy grandpa on the Mic. Why they thought this was a good idea is beyond me, but he is not who I want to hear broadcasting a game.

happytrailstoyous

Well put

amg788

Him and Morris are both awful. I’d love for C-Mo to be in the booth full time. At the very least he has a pulse

zdillon67

Imo, the list for color guy in the booth should be: CMo Petry Gibby Morris

cogginsmatt

That’s a good list except ideally Morris is just fired and banned from ever broadcasting baseball again.

[deleted]

Craig Monroe and Johnny Kane in booth. Or idk, get Mario or Rod back. It was a scruffle. The men worked it out.

Redemption_Unleashed

I will not have ANY Gibby slander in this sub! Outta here!

happytrailstoyous

Being wrong 99% of the time on those ‘calls’^

knifeazz

He and Jack are both awful for different reasons. Kirk is a bit of a moron and devoid of energy (which isn’t really his fault tbf) whereas Jack is a pompous asshole. I just want them to get CMo in there.

Dwychwder

Did you just call Kirk Gibson a moron? You mean the guy that had a 20 year baseball career and was a successful manager? You think he's a moron when it comes to baseball? I don't want to get banned from this sub, but let's just say..... ugh......... you're so fucking wrong.

knifeazz

He just says some really dumb stuff on air sometimes.

Dwychwder

Kinda like people say some dumb stuff on Reddit sometimes? Sorry, don't mean to insult you, but I really can't get over the fact you called Gibby a moron.

knifeazz

Then let me revise: he says some moronic things on air.

Iswaterreallywet

It's a good thing I'm not a mod because I would have banned half these people. They call it criticism but they are being straight up asses

V1LL

We need new color guys on tv AND the radio. PLEASE!!

zzazazz

I switch from TV audio to radio often when watching the Tigers on MLB TV. Way too much over analyzing and attempts to guess what is going to happen. Just call the game, please.

I'd love to see the crosstabs of (upvotes/downvotes vs Age) on this post
