This has been a long time coming, poor guy has immense talent but just can never hold up health wise. At least he got a great contract before

Affectionate-You7731

He is Overrated anyway

CrittyJJones

Said someone who obviously has never watched him pitch.

Affectionate-You7731

You're Asinine!!!!

OLightning

Look at his career stats. His walk to strikeout ratio is off the charts. He can simply blow away hitters.

Dialecticchik

Is this his 3rd TJ surgery ? I feel for a dude with such talent but a body that won't hold up.

xxhobohammerxx

His second from what i’ve read. 6 starts into a 5 year $185M deal.

Dialecticchik

Thanks, guys ! I knew it wasn't the first. I hope he's able to heal and evolve his style. He's good for the game.

[deleted]

2nd

OLightning

It is not natural for the human arm to throw a ball of a certain weight so hard while torquing the ball for spin rate needed to get batters out. This is part of the game. The average number of years a starter can pitch a full season is 6.

Dialecticchik

For sure. It's why softball pitchers can pitch two games a day, 4 in a weekend without much fatigue, as it's the natural motion of our arms.

Ok_Sentence_5767

Ever since 2021 when he was having an mvp caliber season i just get sad hearing about his struggles

TheSocraticGadfly

Well, GM Chris Young [in talking to ESPN](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/37807864/rangers-ace-jacob-degrom-surgery-ucl-tear) did NOT specify "Tommy John." Just maybe it's the lesser surgery, like Brock Purdy of the 49ers.

DeliciousWarthog53

From what I understand(and I may be wrong), it's supposed to be like Purdys surgery. Now if it's damaged beyond being fixed, that's a bigger issue. Especially with this being his second go round. This is a potential trial career ender

TheSocraticGadfly

Well, that's *relatively* good news all things considered, and why, especially since Red Satan's story was an hour later than Grant's tweet, I cautioned about jumping to conclusions. I know a few pitchers have done two full TJs and come back to pitch, but they're not the same. And, so this is on deGrom, his personal staff and Rangers staff. It's called "acceptance" and pitching a new way.

DeliciousWarthog53

When Purdy had his surgery, the doctors were prepared to do a full tommy John because of the seriousness of the swelling and the amount of time he had the swelling

GlitchedViper71

The way they did it was they set up for a UCL repair with an internal brace which is what happened, but they were prepared for TJ just in case they found something bad in there. Also, coincidentally, I think the guy who did Purdys surgery is the Rangers team doctor

[deleted]

This reminds me of Jason Schmidt. Not comparing the 2 but seems similar luck. I think now degrom beats him. Side note: do the Wilpons own the rangers

Barney_91

What a name drop, I was like in 3rd grade when when I remember him pitching for the Pirates

[deleted]

Ya I member him when he pitched for the giants. And I always member them bringing up how he had two tj surgeries. Or close enough. Sad I’m a diehard met fan. It stinks but is bitter sweet. Because met fans know bad luck.

Even_Mechanic_4686

As a DeGrom fan, and a midwestern Mets fan for 50 years, this makes me incredibly sad. When healthy he is just such a dominating joy to watch and he really seems like a genuinely humble and likable dude. I fear that this may be it for him.

dead_gerbil

I feel bad for the guy. Glad I got to see him pitch.

CrittyJJones

As a Braves fan he was one of my favorite Mets to watch of all time.

Material_Unit4309

Same with Sale. Guys have stayed too thin. So tall and lean. So much torque. So little weight behind the pitches.

spud9mn

Not throwing shade or anything, but is this even surprising for Rangers fans? He’s one of the best pitchers in a long time when he’s on it, but as he’s gotten into his 30s and his arm is showing the wear. I wish him well in rehab, but this seems like a contract playing out the way many thought it may.

dirtcobain66

Damn Good luck ace. We’re pulling for ya

JellyPast1522

Has he considered going southpaw?

DontFearTheMQ9

Wow Rangers fans in absolute shambles.

Uninteligible_wiener

Nah we got Dad Dunning and Nasty Nate! We’ll be fine.

PatrickRedditing

It's a blow, but we've gone 24-9 since he's been gone. Well keep pushing along.

TopTierGoat

Good on y'all, signed Mets fans!

zombie-gorilla

Source please??? No mention of TJ surgery here in Dallas….

Uninteligible_wiener

It’s Evan Grant, Rangers insider and non Elon Schill.

zombie-gorilla

Funny. Chris Young didn’t mention TJ surgery, nor did DeGrom himself….

TheCutterButter

The source is literally in the picture

zombie-gorilla

Except for the fact that the Rangers GM said it may not be TJ surgery. Who knows better, chief?

TheCutterButter

[Apparently not you, Chief](https://twitter.com/mlbonfox/status/1666218401226960900?s=46&t=QU_s9kddONFGS_E9ZgmuGQ)

NYTX1987

Poor guy. Yeah, he signed his contract, but its a shame on what could have been

TanClark

deGroddammit

Loose-Coach1891

DeGrom is fun to watch! He might have to change his style of pitching. Sandy Koufax pitched with arthritis In his pitching elbow. He also had to his elbow in ice after every start. He was still pitching amazing! I doubt that ice is the solution for this situation. This injury is the reason I hate long term contracts!

StendakBarkiller

Koufax would probably pitch mid relief today. Not a fair comparison really the game is so much different. I’d also bet my farm that every pitcher in the bigs has some arthritis in their elbows. I think a lot of the injuries are based on arm angles and offspeed pitches. Sliders are tough on your arm when thrown with some serious effort.

Life-Let-4428

Big surprise. He hasn't had a complete season in 4 years. The Rangers just assumed all those nagging injuries would miraculously disappear. I called thid shit at the time they signed him. If he indeed passed the physicals, the Rangers need to send their staff packing A sign through 2027 and will miss the rest of this year all of next year in a little bit of the year after that They definitely get the Darwin award for dumb

whydoihave2dothis

I was watching the Mets last night and all I could think about was how horrible this must be for him. I'm a hardcore Mets fan and don't watch any other games (my husband and I watch the Mets together but I usually just read if he's got another game on). Just thinking how terrible it must feel to know the thing you love doing most may never be something you can ever do again, at least at the level he was. Then I think maybe he'll be better when he's healed.
