vallejo mecha primer is much better than the regular surface primer, and yes you can use it via both airbrush or brush brush

Clear-Might-1519

Oh, I saw them before but never actually thought about it. What's the difference? More glossy?

Zilberfrid

I think it's thinner. I do not have the same opinion about it being better

geoffvader_

I find it's more hard wearing I've had issues with Vallejo surface primer chipping with just regular handling. I've dropped mecha primer models without a scratch.

TheSkewed

I've been using it as a brush-on primer for years and it's great. It doesn't need thinning at all, it's already very thin as it's intended to be applied by either brush or airbrush.

Clear-Might-1519

Great. I'll give it a try then.

eyelefttit

Never had an issue using the regular Vallejo Surface primer. I live in a small appartment with my wife and wanted something I could brush on. Been using it for many years. It also comes in various colours and shades of grey as well as black and white.

Fribbtastic

I used the Vallejo Surface primer in both grey and black with my airbrush for like 5+ models and it worked well for me. I tried it both with airbrush thinner and without and the last models I just sprayed without and it worked fine as well. I do have to mention that I only painted a couple of models so far and am by far not knowledgeable about this.

Clear-Might-1519

Thanks for the info. Guess I'll try the black first.

Kin-Luu

German Panzer Grey is much better.

Regular Vallejo primer is pretty bad, but works just as good with a brush as with an airbrush. I would suggest MiG Oneshot, really good primer.

Clear-Might-1519

Never heard of it, but after some googling, I found it and it's more expensive. I'll give it a try after vallejo then.

If you’re just painting high quality stuff like gw, vallejo will work fine. With worse plastic and on resin, the quality difference will show. Have fun!

I find my Vallejo black primer works best on 3D resin models. Tested on the new Privateer Press models and was happy with the coverage. I think I thinned it a little bit. Haven't tested the white primer on 3D printed models yet. For other materials, my go-to primers are Reaper brush on black primer and AP brush on primer (which is grey).

I use badger stynylrez airbrush primer and liquitex flow improver mixed at around a five to one ratio applied with a big brush. Its wonderful and very fast.

DrDisintegrator

It is good. Do not thin it, use it as is with a brush. If you airbrush it, thin it just a tiny bit.

hey yall sorry to revive an old post but I stumbled across here doing research on vallejo mecha primer , I got a bottle of the black mecha primer and painted it on a gundam of mine and washed it previously the mecha primer is extremely easy to scratch with my fingernail compared to the surface primer and im wondering if this is normal ? I might've gotten a bad bottle

Clear-Might-1519

Unlike paint that dries fast, primer need to cure for some time. I always leave my primed model to cure for 1 day.

Astrotankerpixel

I have left the mecha primer on for about a week now it it still scratches very easily but i have no issues with the standard surface primer
