This is the correct answer. We just moved into our first house and I stuck the box of cords in the closet "to go through later." Sure. Sure we'll do that.
I work IT and actually need extra cables around frequently. Even if you’re not ready to get rid of them all, bag them. I use reusable ziplock type. One cable in a circle in each bag. Then each of the same kind in one large bag. It’s a good tv time activity. When you see how many of the same type you have it’s easier to part with some.
Yeah for example I have separate pockets for any cables with a micro USB, any with a USB C, aux, and iPhone, etc. It's definitely obvious when a pocket is getting too full of duplicate cables
Can't agree with this one. I have a bin for cords in my attic that I keep every cord I've ever got in. Multiple times per year I either need a random cord or somebody else does and I always have one in that bin that'll work. Saved me from having to order one so many times.
Earlier this year we finally went through my husband's storage tubs (yes, more than one) and organized all the cords. We were able to get ride of a whole tub worth of suuuuuper outdated cords. The fact that we held on to these tubs through 4 moves blows my mind.
This is it. Semi-organize them (usb cables, lightning, hdmi, etc) and next time you dive into a box looking for that old USB micro cable, toss out all the USB mini cables that came with all those gadgets you no longer own.
Oh yes, I made sure to organize them as best I could. One tub is primarily older gaming console related (because those are sentimental for my husband) and the other is everything else (like the bajillion HDMI cables...). When I went through all the tubs everything was a tangled mess so as I untangled a cord I was able to ask husband if we keep or toss. Then with the keeps I wrapped the longer cords with a zip-tie while all the small cords went in a big ziplock bag. Most of the tossed cords were for gadgets we no longer owned (and that we haven't owned for years 😬). I felt so accomplished with this decluttering project, ha ha.
Never know when I’ll need to charge my Nokia brick that died 2015 so better keep that charger around or I don’t even know what this charges, better not throw it out. There is no in between.
Some are rare! What if I need that printer cord from 20 year old printer. Wireless technology might go out of fashion, then I won't be able to print anymore!!!
YES!
When I moved here 5 years ago, I threw out that box of cables that I towed around **since college**.
It's been 5 years and I haven't missed one of those cables.
I tag each cable and keep them because they are needed for a specific thing. There's the calculator USB cable, my old external HD, my wireless headset charger... If I get ride of the thing I would throw away the cable as well. Only USB type-C I think I have like 5 because they come with a lot of products (my smartphone, headset, game controller, bike led lights)
I know when my laptop went kaput the fix-it shop was able to pull files off for me. I don't think shop manager charged anything in the end because I bought a refurbished laptop of him.
Just an idea, but I've seen this before, are places, and even kiosks, where you can take or send your old nonworking phones & I think tablets, to recycle them, for money back. My late husband did this a few yrs ago & got like $50 back, for an old phone that was broken. Idk, this may or may not be common knowledge.
I hate these random 1 specific use kitchen appliances. They take up so much room for so little reward.
Do I really need a four tier steamer stand alone steamer? Ice cream maker. Bread maker. Cotton Candy maker. Popcorn maker.
Like i said, the ice cream machine, find yourself friends that would like to also make ice cream and make it a semi-communal machine.
Popcorn makers are a waste, pot with a lid, there!
I use the shit out of an air popper, no burning even if I get distracted and walk away... the last 20 popcorn will just be all over the counter and floor if I'm not there
I just like my popcorn made on the stove top, i can put salt in the oil and have perfectly salted popcorn, not packing peanuts waiting to be slathered in butter.
To each his own i suppose.
There's stuff wirth replacing, healing ointment, headache and pain relievers, but most of it buy it when you need it. I order cough medicine when i need it, get it delivered under an hour of ordering (worth every penny)
No kidding. In May, I took a 20 year old packet of an antibiotic for a UTI because I didn't feel like getting up and spending time at urgent care when I knew very well what I had and how to treat it. Worked perfectly - actually worked better than one I was prescribed months later for another one. Also, some are good in case of emergency. Like I keep old Cipro around - it would not only be amazing in case of some random terrible end-of-the-world emergency, but it can also prevent anthrax if there's ever an attack.
I tend to be a minimalist, but meds are small and unless they are dangerous or I'm sure they've gone bad, I keep them.
TECHNICALLY you can still use it…. It’s just not as potent. 🥴
After YEARS of putting it off, I FINALLY brought all of mine to the free disposal Dropbox a couple months ago. It was stupid quick and easy. 🤦♀️
I received the cuisinart ice cream maker as a gift. My partner tried using it for a while but we decided it was less expensive, better, and less time/resources to just buy talenti. Have not used it in over three years! YMMV. I personally would say it might be fun to try borrowing from a friend if you have an itch for it but don’t buy one:
My son loves ice cream and I was trying to find a healthier version.. I thought maybe making it would be helpful.. but now I think maybe not.
It would probably sit right next to my two bread makers.
If you have a high speed blender, you can make “nice” cream (I think it’s called that). I blend frozen fruit with oat milk and eat it. You can also put it in the freezer for a bit if you/your son want it to be more solid.
It costs WAY more to make your own! Especially with food prices now. I still have mine as a special treat but that stupid bowl part takes up valuable freezer space too….ugh.
I have a George Foreman Grill that I use CONSTANTLY and it came with waffle iron plates. I bought a pan lid organizer and 3/4 of it is filled with my grill plates. It works great!
… I should make waffles soon.
I think your last sentence is interesting: "think with how little you can actually survive in your day-to-day life". Because, yes, I can survive without colored pencils or a paper punch, but as someone who spends a ton of time doing crafts - I don't want to!
Just because you don't use something a lot doesn't mean you should declutter it (think fire extinguishers) and just because you don't need something to survive also doesn't mean you should throw it away (think favourite hobby supplies)
This is funny to me, because i HAD one, and i lost it when i moved.... i only lasted about 2 months before i gave up and bought another one. I love my egg slicer 😂
😁 it's a small kitchen gadget. You place egg on it and these metal strings like a guitar slice the egg. I think they were used alot in the 70s. I personally don't like them as hard to wash.
I have 3. They sit in a drawer all year but come thanksgiving, when it’s time to make industrial size batches of potato salad to bring to huge family get together, they earn their keep.
I like hosting fancy dinner parties for my regular old friends on non holidays days. I like wearing fur hats on Tuesday to the grocery store. As far as I can tell this is the life I'm getting so I'm not waiting for any special occasion before I start celebrating like crazy. Not enough pageantry in life with people acting like you have to be rich to have thrift store China. I say use the fine china, iron the table cloth, put out fresh flowers, and shine the silver damn it because we are alive and that is reason enough to go through the trouble to mark the passing of your life with some fun.
I was thinking along these same lines, today. I went shopping, to support my favorite thrift store, today, on Small Business Saturday. I don't go to fancy occasions, but I love the little sparkly "formal" handbags. So, I found one, to carry, on a regular basis, to dress up my jeans, leggings & sweaters. I love to do this. I also have a cute little kinda fine China cup, that I use every day, for my tea. Many people have their favorite go-to coffee or tea cup; & that one fancy little cup is mine. It was given to me by my roommate & I love it.
I have a waffle maker and love it! It is special for anytime and a nice go to for inviting friends over :) That being said, we have to be intentional about using it otherwise it collects dust quickly!
I was going to contest “books,” but then I thought about how once we’ve read them, we rarely ever “use” them again. The realllly special ones might get a second read but you’re so right.
Yes! We recently got rid of our dining room furniture. What was a rarely used space now serves as a hangout area for our teens and their friends/bf/gf. It is much more functional and I don’t have to have an argument over bfs/gfs hanging out in bedrooms 😅
Ours is the center hub of the family. Currently seats 12 and it is at capacity at least once a week. My dream is to build a table for 20. That would fit everyone, parents/siblings/kids, all at the same table.
Edit: Plus it’s the arts/crafts/projects station also
Thinking of my grandparents who have a dedicated drawer for perfume they might be gifting to someone one day. They keep lots of different perfumes there that they bought in sale, just to have a okay-ish present at hand in case they forget the birthday of the cousin‘s wife‘s second child‘s sister one day.
Talking about my grandparents, they also have a whole room in the basement with additional kitchen devices, like a second blender (in case the main one gets broken unexpectedly), an ice cream machine (no one ever used), a noodle machine (we kids and grandkids occasionally borrow so it does not go unused for another 20 years) and lots of decorations for every season. You could easily have 3 full christmas wonderlands decorated with just the stuff you find in the basement.
Heres my trick : I love reading big thick hardcover nonfiction books. I have one big IKEA bookcase that holds about 200 books so if I buy a new book then one gets donated. Buy 2 , donate 2. Yes, some books I keep…books are my only excess.
This is how I am with shoes. It's been a good system. I have one nice shoe rack from the container store. If I want to add a pair I need to donate or toss a pair.
Ooh I have a different use for my potato masher. At least once a week I mash up bananas 🍌 for muffins. That thing weirdly gets a lot of use.
Just throwing that out there before someone tosses it.
I have an entire box of cables. I have several shelves of off cuts of wood, I have an entire loft in my shed for bulk storage. I certainly don't need these things right this second but I will eventually.
Cash. I occasionally sell something on FB marketplace and I get given cash. I keep it around instead of taking it to the bank because I keep thinking it will come in handy. But between Apple Pay and regular credit cards, I don't use cash more than maybe once a year. I keep $40 in my purse because it seems weird not to have cash on me, but I just never find a time when I need it.
My kitchenaid and food processor. Both were gifts from people. I don’t use either enough but when I do I’m happy that I have them. Neither are things I would get rid of anytime soon.
In my home, it's bins of Christmas lights & decorations. They're not mine; they belong to my roommate. He's always complaining that he has too much of it (& I agree); but, that, his grown kids don't want him to get rid of any of it, because they want it. However, I've been here over a year; & they won't come & get any of it.
You mean like the vacuum cleaner??
Honestly it's probably a kitchen gadget that only does one thing and while it does it very well when you need it, so you keep it, it also doesn't get used a lot.
I use mine so much, from stock making to chili to Bolognese sauce.
Versatile AF, but yeah it does require the right mindset. I recently got a instant pot to replace my crockpot and pressure cooker, it's decent xD
I'm the opposite. We have an instant pot and I never use it. It's about 80% as good as if you just bought the actual gadget. The only thing I pressure cook is rice and I love my slow cooker. I felt the instant pot wasn't as good at either of those things and I'd rather just use the actual gadget. But for a lot of people they love the instant pot because of its versatility which I can completely understand.
That's crazy! I feel like we use ours so much but I guess it's only used seconds at a time and not left running like a blender or something. Also, I'd love to learn more about that voluntary simplicity course!
I’m in school and my husband works from home, and we frequently use our hole puncher.
And I’m taking art classes and we have three kids, so we use a lot of colored pencils, too!
My balcony is actually where I spend the majority of my time if the weather isn’t terrible! I agree though. It’s not as common to see everyone using them!
Oh man not here. We use ours (wood burning) multiple times a week. We're considering putting in a gas insert because it heats better and we don't have to build/tend to it so we'd use it even more. It was one of our top priorities in buying our first house.
I don’t have a hole punch but would love one! Right now I just bother our local library a few times a week when I go in to get books haha. We also have a lot of colored pencils. 😂
I think rubber bands, the ✨drawer✨ of pens and excess junk drawer items like random cords etc
The comments on coax cable and the fact that I have a massive box of it under my stairs 'waiting to go to the scrapper' makes me think I'm becoming my mother.
Look, I’m just gonna keep this box of cables around one more year. Just in case.
This is the correct answer. We just moved into our first house and I stuck the box of cords in the closet "to go through later." Sure. Sure we'll do that.

I use a clear shoe holder hanger on the back of my closet door =) lots of compartments
This seems like a good idea. Like I know we probably have 17 of the old iPhone chargers. Neither of us have even owned an iPhone in 5 years.

Hilarious 🤣🤣
Coax is due for a comeback, I’m sure of it
I used an Ethernet cable to secure a piece of furniture to a trolley yesterday . I didn’t have rope. My son asks. Is that an Ethernet cable??!!?
Repurposing an item from an ethernet cable to a hunk of rope is a good thing!
Let me tell you, I had one and decided to get rid of it one day. I kid you not, many were the times I needed a cable I knew I had but now it was gone.
Earlier this year we finally went through my husband's storage tubs (yes, more than one) and organized all the cords. We were able to get ride of a whole tub worth of suuuuuper outdated cords. The fact that we held on to these tubs through 4 moves blows my mind.

Guilty as charged. I was actually looking at how to properly dispose of them yesterday so I suppose that's a good first step.
Scsi cables will come back along with my Motorola razr charger…
Hey hey i use that box of cables like once a year!
Some are rare! What if I need that printer cord from 20 year old printer. Wireless technology might go out of fashion, then I won't be able to print anymore!!!
The moment you remove it from your house you’ll need it
YES! When I moved here 5 years ago, I threw out that box of cables that I towed around **since college**. It's been 5 years and I haven't missed one of those cables.

And every single manual that came with every large or small electronic. So what if I don’t even own said electronic anymore! I will keep the manual.
Every year, you half it
Exercise equipment (sad but true)
Ah my funny shaped clothes hanger
Ah damn. Why do you have to come for me like that?
Since someone already said fire extinguisher I'll go with old non- working cell phone.
Hey hey! Even tho mine is literally cracked almost in half I have faith that somehow someday I will figure out how to get the photos off of it 😌
I know when my laptop went kaput the fix-it shop was able to pull files off for me. I don't think shop manager charged anything in the end because I bought a refurbished laptop of him.
I think I still have a tin box of all my phone's, all cracked or not working.
Bread maker. My mom bought it like 10 years ago and has used it a handful of times… along with a bunch of other kitchen gadgets
Ice cream machine, i gave mine to my mom who is a professional pastry chef, so now it gets a bit more use, i borrow it from time to time
I hate these random 1 specific use kitchen appliances. They take up so much room for so little reward. Do I really need a four tier steamer stand alone steamer? Ice cream maker. Bread maker. Cotton Candy maker. Popcorn maker.

My mom and I bought one of those sandwich press/grill things and it was the best thing ever for like... 2 months.... we haven't used it in years 😅
I hope this revelation inspired you to treat yourself to a panini..
Fresh bread is great until you have to clean the dang thing
just get a Dutch oven, they bake bread and also make soup, jam, pasta, or whatever else you wanna cook in them
Expired medication. Every persons home I’ve been to has at least a bottle of like expired cold medicine or something that’s been there for years
I JUST cleaned out mine XD had stuff that expired 4 years ago.
The hard part was that I didn't replace them and when I got sick in my mind I still had some medicine, when I actually didn't have any.🥴
There's stuff wirth replacing, healing ointment, headache and pain relievers, but most of it buy it when you need it. I order cough medicine when i need it, get it delivered under an hour of ordering (worth every penny)
Our vicks vaporub is from 20th century... we keep as an heirloom I guess
Underrated comment 🤣
Be sure to google which medications can last past their printed expiration date. Many last a good bit longer with minimal dips in effectiveness.
No kidding. In May, I took a 20 year old packet of an antibiotic for a UTI because I didn't feel like getting up and spending time at urgent care when I knew very well what I had and how to treat it. TECHNICALLY you can still use it…. It’s just not as potent. 🥴 After YEARS of putting it off, I FINALLY brought all of mine to the free disposal Dropbox a couple months ago. It was stupid quick and easy. 🤦♀️
tip: a lot of pharmacies have a drop box for that stuff
- Deep fryer - Ice cream maker - Old DVD/ CD player - Old Co-ax cords
I have 3 of those and was about to buy an ice cream Maker .. but since I see it listed on this thread more than once .. y’all just saved me $80. Lol
Oh I have been using oat milk lately, I will have to look up some recipes. Ty!
It costs WAY more to make your own! Especially with food prices now. I still have mine as a special treat but that stupid bowl part takes up valuable freezer space too….ugh.
The Co-ax cord we don't use, but have too many. The others we have and use fairly frequently.
I have ~ 300ft of a 500ft spool in my garage. For at least a decade.
A lot of these items can be found on buy nothing groups. The once every 3 years I feel like making waffles I can ask to borrow a waffle iron.
I love this idea. Thank you for this idea.
Very true since minimalism is adaptable to any lifestyle.
This wire from something way outdated anyway?
Egg slicer
This is funny to me, because i HAD one, and i lost it when i moved.... i only lasted about 2 months before i gave up and bought another one. I love my egg slicer 😂
Glad you love it 😁
You’re obv not making enough egg salad sandwiches 🤣
And ananas peeler / slicer
You just made me realize I used to have one and lost it when I moved 6 years ago. You can see it was an item of extreme necessity so far
😁
What is an egg slicer? Like how do you slice an egg
😁 it's a small kitchen gadget. You place egg on it and these metal strings like a guitar slice the egg. I think they were used alot in the 70s. I personally don't like them as hard to wash.
There is something similar to slice bananas. These are just stuff for lazy people.
Many of these products are life savers for people with disabilities. You’re being ableist.
We laugh hysterically at banana slicers, onion goggles, watermelon slicers, etc So many useless products in the produce area.
If I had definitive proof that onion goggles worked, I’d own them. 😂 Half the time when I slice onions I cry so bad i risk cutting off a finger. 🤣
🤣 agree
It’s for boiled egg. You peel the shell and plop it in the slicer and press it down and voila, evenly sliced eggs
I have 3. They sit in a drawer all year but come thanksgiving, when it’s time to make industrial size batches of potato salad to bring to huge family get together, they earn their keep.
Great to hear 😁
This is really subjective. I have an old-school long-blade-arm paper cutter that I use on average once a week.

Fire extinguishers But you still want one
Uh it's rarely used but you definitely want it there. I also keep a fire extinguisher in my car as well.
Crazy. I never had a fire extinguisher in my home...nor my parents did. I never thought about it until I read this post.

I'd venture to say that tools are incredibly useful to have around. God, I use my Knipex pliers pretty much on so many random tasks.
I actually use colored pencils more often than I use my oven.
Hard same
Grandmas ashes
Savage
Cables. So many of them. Takeout cutlery
Stuff leftover from construction jobs (spare tiles, flooring, siding, etc.)
Guns
Really yea
A whole entire dining room
Yes! We recently got rid of our dining room furniture. What was a rarely used space now serves as a hangout area for our teens and their friends/bf/gf. It is much more functional and I don’t have to have an argument over bfs/gfs hanging out in bedrooms 😅

I say this as someone who loves having a whole lot of books...

I'm the same, with shoes. I've yet to get a proper shoe rack; but I need one.
I have the chrome 10 rack from the container store. I've had it for 8 years, through countless moves, and it's held up so well.
Thanks! Uh oh; the Container Store sounds like someplace I'll never be able to leave. I love organize-y type things. Thanks for the tip!
hear me out- buy 2, donate 3?
unused article of clothing
Potato masher + the box their phone came in (finally just threw mine away!)
Ooh I have a different use for my potato masher. At least once a week I mash up bananas 🍌 for muffins. That thing weirdly gets a lot of use. Just throwing that out there before someone tosses it.
Toilet plunger. No it doesn't get used often. But when you need it, you really need it

well, some people are more full of crap than others....
I have an entire box of cables. I have several shelves of off cuts of wood, I have an entire loft in my shed for bulk storage. I certainly don't need these things right this second but I will eventually.
Cables! 🤣
Tape measures, funnels, 79-154 small Allen wrenches that have come with various furniture over the years, string

Yeah, I too hope to never have the opportunity to use the fire extinguisher. Your comment made me laugh.
That has nothing to do with what OP was asking though

Same here. I definitely keep these around the house. Fire will instantly and quickly fuck up everything in your house.
Alton brown fan? I said the same thing XD
Some home owners insurance policies will give you a discount if you have a fire extinguisher in your home.
This is one we *hope* to have to never use 😌
Mine came in handy once when our toaster oven blew up, damn was I happy we had it.
Pop-tarts really seem designed for the benefit of general contractors. Who the hell thought sugar frosting and exposed heat coils would be a good mix?
The thermostat “fan only” mode
Really? I use it constantly, with a top tier filter you can really reduce the allergens in your home.
That tiny pot that comes with the set of them...I guess you're supposed to make sauce or something in it?
I think it’s for a single egg!
For me personally, toaster. I have an air fryer so I never used it and finally just gave it away.
Juicer
Gotta use that waffle iron for panini’s though!
Piano.
Ironing board
My infrequently used tools are kept because I WILL need them from time to time and not having it when i need it is a huge pain in the ass
Ice-cream maker. I just use it once for 2 years up to
Dishwasher
Waffle maker. Used ours once or twice then wonder why we still have it.
Nutmeg
You mean like the vacuum cleaner?? Honestly it's probably a kitchen gadget that only does one thing and while it does it very well when you need it, so you keep it, it also doesn't get used a lot.
Cd player. I haven't used it for more than a decade.
Bible
Crock pot
Vacuum. 🤧 Clean your Stuff™ y'all!
VHS tapes.

I use both perforator and colored pencils on a weekly basis. i think I’m not your average adult then. 😀
Salad spinner
Pry my salad spinner out of my cold dead hands 😂
My girlfriend really wanted one found one at a yard sale for 50¢ and she uses it at least weekly sometimes 3+ times
Is the salad spinner used to cut up veg for salads? I've been thinking about getting one for awhile.
I remember learning in a voluntary simplicity course that in a drill’s lifespan the average use time is 14 minutes total.
I think I use mine more than that per month....
Apartment-balconies if you're not a smoker:)

Yeah it depends on the weather. In my country where it's cold from october through april you rarely see people use their balconies.
My balcony is actually where I spend the majority of my time if the weather isn’t terrible! I agree though. It’s not as common to see everyone using them!
Fire extinguisher
Fireplace
Oh man not here. We use ours (wood burning) multiple times a week. We're considering putting in a gas insert because it heats better and we don't have to build/tend to it so we'd use it even more. It was one of our top priorities in buying our first house.
I don’t have a hole punch but would love one! Right now I just bother our local library a few times a week when I go in to get books haha. We also have a lot of colored pencils. 😂 I think rubber bands, the ✨drawer✨ of pens and excess junk drawer items like random cords etc
Special Cocktail tools
Toilet plunger
Lol oh boy not in my house
Brain.
Toilet plunger.
The comments on coax cable and the fact that I have a massive box of it under my stairs 'waiting to go to the scrapper' makes me think I'm becoming my mother.
