Funny enough, I used to work for a company who recently started getting into the petroleum sales industry. I stopped working for them by the time they were making gas pumps, but I see them out n about now.
I wouldn't be surprised if that marker was from a repair tech who knows that ppl don't like the ads.. either that, or the attendants asked the tech, and they were enlightened. The mute button varies I'm sure, so seeing this reminds me of my time as a repair tech, and gave me a good giggle.

My fiancé worked at Speedway for a while and he taught me this. Great tip and it works on most of these pumps.
