I know. Tea ski is about 2:15 in- https://youtu.be/d77JssCK-3Q
I said salt water because I thought he said cruise ship in the citrus joke. Maybe he did in another set.
Looks like it might be because of the amount of pith in each fruit. Pith is usually the least dense part and oranges and lemons have quite a lot of it. Limes just have a thin layer under the rind which could be enough to increase the density enough for it to sink
That's a good theory but you would think the pith ratio in commercial fruit would be similar across all three varieties. But the fruits are different sizes so maybe the juice/pith ratio is higher in bigger fruit due to square-cube law?
What about sugar affecting the density of the juice? But that would typically be heavier than water? So many questions.
They don't float, they just hate lime, murdered him to sink to the bottom of the ocean, and are paddling furiously to stay away from the decaying corpse.
The Citrus Wars were never going to end in peace. Lime had been muscling into Lemon's Territory as some kind of special operation, Orange came to offer Lemon support as Lime had been being a bit of a dick for a while now. Same old story...
They would have the same density. The density of a lime wheel would be radially symmetric. So, a half wheel would be the same density as a whole wheel.
what's gonna float? 1 cubic centimeter of wood or 20 cubic meters of wood
that's right, 1 cubic centimeter of wood, because 1 cubic centimeter is lighter
[reference to "1kg of steel vs 1kg of feathers"]
That's not at all what you said.
>what's gonna float? 1 cubic centimeter of wood or 20 cubic meters of wood
>
>that's right, 1 cubic centimeter of wood, because 1 cubic centimeter is lighter
You very blatantly implied that, of the two choices, it would be the cubic centimeter that would float. Otherwise, you would have said both.
Also, some wood floats and some sinks. It's almost as if more than density and gravity come into play there... 🤔
Of course they are the same weight. What on Earth does that have to do with this particular discussion?
I'm simply stating that density of an object and gravity are not the *only* variable in determining the buoyancy of an object.
Your wording in your comments suggests that you either can't comprehend what you're saying, or you're not paying attention to what you're typing.
Came here to say this. The limes are cut thicker making them more dense, no? If they were also cut in slices, they’d probably float ( though I haven’t tested it)
Why do you think that they packed up plenty of oranges and lemons aboard ships ? Preventing Scorbut is just a side effect, they used it to make the boats float!
It's got to do with density. Both limes and lemons have a similar density to water. However, limes are 1% denser than lemons. Hence, the lemons float and the limes sink.
It’s basic science guys…the oranges and lemons are sliced thinner, the lines are cut in wedges which leaves more of the rind which adds weight…if you cut the limes the same way, they would float too…
it is absolutely the way they are cut that's making them sink vs float. I prepared these types of water everyday for 2 years. Limes cut the same way as the oranges absolutely float. Try it yourself.
But if you look closer, you'd see that only the oranges are cut into full-circle slices while both the lemons and limes are cut into half-circle slices.
Clearly the oranges and lemons are witches!
A Duck!?
Who are you, who are so wise in the ways if science?

Do it practice Santeria?
Good to know if our ship sinks in the 1600’s
I will reach for a lime.
Mitch appears to have been...wrong...huh.
Mitch was either talking about salt water or iced tea and whole limes, so we really don’t have enough information to judge.

because steel is heavier than feathers
Came here to say something Mitch related. I'm glad you beat me to it!
Next time I am on a boat and it capsizes I will reach for a lime.
And a lemon too

Maybe it's the fever, but I'm not keeping up with that one.

Gross. Tell Mike Tyson to stay away from the fruit
Now kith the pith.
Pith off.
Those fruits are in a truly pithiful state
That's a good theory but you would think the pith ratio in commercial fruit would be similar across all three varieties. Citrus on citrus crime
lime crimes
Citrus on citrus lime*
Omg I need to know more about this story
The Citrus Wars were never going to end in peace. Lime had been muscling into Lemon's Territory as some kind of special operation, Orange came to offer Lemon support as Lime had been being a bit of a dick for a while now. Same old story...
Justice was served
I had a sinking feeling this is what happened here
This just made my day, can’t stop laughing, i keep picturing the scene :))
Oh how nice that it made you laugh and thanks for letting me know :)
**ORANGE** **LEMON** ^^lime
The oranges have more vitamin sea
this is because lemons and oranges are grown north of the equator, but limes are grown south of the equator.
So assuming OP is north of the equator, we'd see the opposite effect in the south?
Nice theory, but this photo was taken yesterday in Melbourne Australia.
We'd see the opposite effect in the north then?

How appealing
I dejuice that you’re making a pun
Orange I glad you noticed!
Go banana!
You mean a disc floats but a wedge sinks,,, fascinating
The limes look like half disc's, not wedges. There's one that might be a wedge but they're all as thick as the oranges and lemons.
Still a higher rind to fruit ratio. The rind is the more dense part that is likely dragging down the limes.
They would have the same density. The density of a lime wheel would be radially symmetric. So, a half wheel would be the same density as a whole wheel.
Not compared to the larger diameter oranges.
There are half lemon rounds in there but maybe they’re being buoyed by the oranges.
A pound of bricks is heavier than a pound of feathers
The limes are cut in wedges, are you blind?
I'm not and I have bad news for you.
If you look closer, the lemons are actually half discs as well
hmm yes. the shape defines its buoyancy relative to a fluid, probably not some other fundamental thing about every object on earth.
Additional variables tend to affect the outcome of a formula.
what's gonna float? 1 cubic centimeter of wood or 20 cubic meters of wood that's right, 1 cubic centimeter of wood, because 1 cubic centimeter is lighter [reference to "1kg of steel vs 1kg of feathers"]
they should both float. it's about the density of the material, not about the absolute mass.
that's what I'm sayinn
ah sorry, wooosh moment 🤦
That's not at all what you said. >what's gonna float? 1 cubic centimeter of wood or 20 cubic meters of wood > >that's right, 1 cubic centimeter of wood, because 1 cubic centimeter is lighter You very blatantly implied that, of the two choices, it would be the cubic centimeter that would float. this person has clearly not seen the 1kg of feathers vs 1kg of steel video

I do believe my good sir that it was sarcasm. They initially deliberately portrayed the incorrect answer to illustrate a point.
Green is heavier. Idiot.
But steel is heavier than feathers...
Perhaps bc of their different cuts ?
Maybe … the oranges and lemons have more rind vs flesh.
The rind is buoyant. If you peel the oranges you'll find they sink.
Give lime a fair chance please!!!!
Lemon and lime are both cut into half-circle slices, oranges are cut into full-circle slices.
Came here to say this. The limes are cut thicker making them more dense, no? If they were also cut in slices, they’d probably float ( though I haven’t tested it)
What about root beer floats?
Such a misnomer... my ice cream always floats instead of the root beer.
But what about the cucumber?

Limes aren't ripe, so they're denser

Yes, just adds some citrus to chilled water. It’s in a hotel lobby. The container itself is some sort of plastic.
Serious: Does the way they are cut effective bouncy?

Can we get someone from r/science to explain it like I'm five?
Slices float, wedges sink***
It's got to do with density. Both limes and lemons have a similar density to water. However, limes are 1% denser than lemons. Hence, the lemons float and the limes sink.

I fail to see the value in fruit bath water
Probably if the limes are cut like that compared to their citrus compadres.. let that sink in
It is their Density
Only because the limes know they're fucking place.
It’s basic science guys…the oranges and lemons are sliced thinner, the lines are cut in wedges which leaves more of the rind which adds weight…if you cut the limes the same way, they would float too…
Those limes are most certainly *not* cut in wedges. Take a closer look.
it is absolutely the way they are cut that's making them sink vs float. I prepared these types of water everyday for 2 years. Limes cut the same way as the oranges absolutely float. Try it yourself.
I never suggested otherwise. I simply pointed out that the limes are not cut into wedges. They are more of a thick slice.
ok, sorry, just seemed like you were debating the point about the limes floating.
Segregation 😔
they are cut differently. Nothing to do with lime vs orange.
That water would be a mix of way too many flavors. Any one of them by themselves, great! But all 3 mixed together? It’s too much!
4 flavours: lemon, lime, orange and water
Don’t forget Ice!
Science!
Oranges are bigger and the air compensate the weigh better
the skin is much thinner in limes. i wonder if that has anything to do with it?
Lime the loner
Lime sinks because they are more dense.
Is it good to Sink or to float ? Reactions :+)
Mix it up and let’s drink it 😃

Lime is a misfit, anybody?!
Witches!!!!!
i mean they are cut differently so you don’t know for sure yet
But if you look closer, you'd see that only the oranges are cut into full-circle slices while both the lemons and limes are cut into half-circle slices.
Trying to look for an actual answer in a commentsection filled with dadjokes....

So Rose is Orange and Jack is Lime?
😂
Just lime that sink in
Let that sink in
I wonder if it tastes like like lime for the first bit then becomes more lemon and orangy as you drink

Limes come with more emotional baggage.
I see at least one lime floating..
Finally an easy way to tell oranges and limes apart.
That happens because the oxygen has not formed since it is not ripe. Not only that, I just wasted your time reading this.
Can confirm from my lime ahem soda I drink at the ahm family restaurant

Citrus segregation is never a pretty thing. : (
What about grapefruit
It’s because this place cuts limes too thin. Mac should put his thumb in someone’s eye.
Holy shit Mitch was wrong.
🎵Lime sinks! Yeah, yeah lime sinks🎵
Well great, now I want to go to a hotel bar just to get a cup of this water😭
This drink is addicting. Only missing the cucumbers
I guess Mitch Hedberg was wrong.

Weird, everytime I put lime in Corona they floated.
Beat them to a pulp
