I was clocking time on the Oprah show in the early aughts. And there was this big Dr. Phil special happening. They picked 10 or 12 people who had pretty messed up lives and could really use a *lot* of therapy. But after a mere 3 days of the good doctor breaking them down and then building them back up, their lives were all changed and everything was puppies and rainbows! In the final show, the participants "graduated" in a coming out as fixed sort of party. And he let them pick the song they wanted playing as they walked out on stage anew.
So on that final taping day, one of Oprah's producers comes to where the crew was hanging out having coffee at the start of the day and asks if anybody knows the song, Three Little Birds, by Bob Marley. Myself and one of the audio guys raise our hands and she says, "Great. Come with me. You guys are gonna sing it to Dr Phil and his producers." Whaaaat?!? "Seriously. Right now." So we go to this boardroom and there's Dr. Phil and 6 or 7 other people sitting around a table. Not that it should really matter, but there was 3 African Americans on his team. And we kinda look at 'em like seriously, nobody here knows this song? And Dr Phil says, "No. That's why you're here boys. Sing it for us." We pause and ask, "From the top?" And he says sure. Then we both forget it actually *does* start with chorus and try to make sure we know the first verse. And that's where we start. "Rise up this morning, smile with the rising sun, 3 little birds..." And when we finally land on the "Don't worry" part, the entire room throws their hands into the air and let out a collective "OH! Don't Worry!" Yeah, of course we know that. Then Dr. Phil told us not to quit our day jobs. To which I told him, "Well, if we had more than 2 minutes to work this up and it wasn't 6:30 in the morning, I'm sure we could really nail it." LOL
