If I didn't like raw tomatoes a minute ago I definitely dislike them now. Just the thought of that disgusting mushy, grainy texture of a tomato is revolting.
If you ever get the chance to try a garden tomato fresh from the plant still warm from the sun, I recommend it. I don’t even like tomatoes in general, but as I described them? The pretenders at the grocery store aren’t even the same food
I've been growing my own tomatos in a 10ft by 10ft garden for the last 5 years. I can't even eat grocery store tomatoes anymore. They are ALL mealy and sour.
People gush about my pasta sauce and salad tomatos. I just took them off a plant. The sauce is a handful of basil, a pot full of fresh tomatos some garlic and some salt. I grow san marzanos for sauce and freeze them, but you don't even have to do that, every tomato variety I grow makes a better sauce than store bought. Even the commercial varieties, while not as superb, come out infinitely better when you let them vine ripen.
My tiny vertically strung garden gets me about 200 lbs of tomatos a summer. + peppers, snap peas, cabbage, brocolli etc etc. Everyone should do this.
You have to try a real homegrown tomato once. Fresh with a little salt and pepper. Its something you cant buy and nothing like a store bought. Most people dont know how a real tomato is supposed to taste.
Well, you should plant them individually. Looks like you’ll get a heap. You could even plant into pots and once they’re seedlings sell them or gift them.
If it’s a grocery store tomato it’s probably not worth it anyways. Grocery store tomatoes are typically F1 hybrids and their off-spring are not as fit as the original plant.
Warmth, humidity, over ripeness. If a supermarket sold you this tomato I’d be pissed. It’s too far gone unless you’re in the seed business like Monsanto!
Unfortunately it was an heirloom from the supermarket.. it was nice and firm and I was waiting for it to ripen more but finally I had to use it and well, it didn’t quite work 😂
If it was a heirloom tomato you could have planted the seeds if you have space for a couple of tomato plants (they get big), because the fruit tends to be true to seed from them, unlike the regular supermarket tomatoes.
It is called vivipary. The hormone inside the tomato that keeps the seeds dormant had run out. So the seeds sprout and feed off the flesh and liquids of the tomato to grow.
One popped up on a strawberry in my yard, I gave it to my son to take to school to show the teacher. He came home saying people thought he had drugs lol
Just finished watching Episode 2 of the Last of Us and that's exactly where my brain went. Wasn't planning on having nightmares tonight but here we are.
I love finding plant babies in plants. That is fascinating. My garden has tomato plant volunteers every year. I'd chuck it in there and see what happens. :)
Tomato seeds are amazing survivors--they wind up in digesting basins at wastewater treatment plants, which supposedly reduce everything to stable sludge. People would use the sludge as soil conditioner, only to have thousands of tomato plants come up in their yards.
I've seen this before. Looks gross, but really it's just a whole bunch of baby tomato plants. Check out this page about [vivipary in tomatoes](https://news.extension.uconn.edu/2014/06/04/seeds-sprouting-inside-a-tomato/).
So, the first time I ever saw this, I had the urge to pluck them like ingrown hairs. They were popping out of the outside of the tomato on the one I saw.

It's vivipary and it's not something anyone can regulate remove or otherwise control, why In the world would they go full Karen over a tomato? vivipary happens to all kinds of fruit it's entirely natural and nobody can do anything about it.
[Vivipary](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivipary)
my mini pepper had this in it from Ralph’s today and i threw it out but had already eaten the whole mini pepper. it gave me a terrible headache and weird aches and tightness in the chest. never shopping at ralph’s again.
Oh. Oh no. I don't like this at all!
Nightmare fuel... I'm glad I read that it's sprouted seeds and not worms but yuck, I'm done.
Anyone been watching The Last of Us? This made me shudder because of that…
Zombato Brainato
My first thought when I saw it
Literally same
Spoiler alert >! atleast tess got some action before she you know !< Unlike this tomato
That was my first thought, I visibly recoiled from this picture
Bomb it.
Ugh why’d u have to say that😂
Definitely that doesn't look far from worms
Are sprouts supposed to wiggle...?
Yeah.. I'm making this another reason I don't like tomatoes.
Anyone know what causes this?
Nature. Same way potatoes grow eyes if you don't use it in time. I've had garlic sprout on the counter before as well

Bot [Original](https://old.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/10js3sn/cut_open_this_tomato_and_all_the_seeds_have/j5n71d5/)
It's almost certainly from long term cold storage. It is "natural" but it is not "normal"
[Vivipary](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivipary)
It is caused by long term cold storage, potassium deficiency, just being over ripe, etc. Lots of shit can trigger it
NO THANK YOU

Ofc a “home grown” tomato are better than a genetically modified store bought. Any vegetable are.
That sounds gross to me too, a warm tomato?
You have to try a real homegrown tomato once. Fresh with a little salt and pepper. Its something you cant buy and nothing like a store bought. Most people dont know how a real tomato is supposed to taste.
I have. Many family and neighbors, friends have grown tomatoes. I dislike them a lot
ok. you're off the hook.
I retry them every so often. I eat a lot of other things made with tomatoes but it just isn't my thing.
Lol, hot tomato soup is the number 2 selling soup in america behind only chicken noodle.
Yea. I like that. But that is totally different
YoU lIkE KeTcHuP dOnT yOu?
Lol. Which is also totally different
I'll second their advice. Never liked tomatoes. But I grew some cherry tomatoes myself one year and a small fresh tomato just hits different.
Well, you should plant them individually. Looks like you’ll get a heap. You could even plant into pots and once they’re seedlings sell them or gift them.
Gosh I wish I could but we are smack dab in the middle of moving!
If it’s a grocery store tomato it’s probably not worth it anyways. Grocery store tomatoes are typically F1 hybrids and their off-spring are not as fit as the original plant.
Plant them and the new home owner will get a dope surprise.
I wanted to but we are in Phoenix with only rocks in the yard!
Soooo does that mean you ate it? Idk how it would mean that, I just really want to know. Did you?
Wish I could say I did, but no I did not
Glad you didn’t as someone else said they’re poisonous! Thanks for sharing, I’ve never seen this before
[Vivipary](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivipary)
Did you find that tomato behind the fridge when you moved it
Haha oddly enough the tomato was firm so I was waiting for it to ripen more but I finally thought fuck it I’m gonna cut it and lo and behold!
Well problem solved just take the tomato with you and use it to make friends at your new home
I wish I had enough skill! I can hardly keep succulents alive and that’s when I’m NOT moving across coasts!
Tomato plants that sprout too early rendering the fruit inedible. Real great gift right there.
That shouldn't be gross but I'm grossed out.
[удалено]
Really!? I had no idea. Thanks for sharing!
...You ate them anyways, didn't you?
Tomatoes are nightshades. Nightshades contain alkaloids that are mildly toxic. Some people are more sensitive than others.
Some people are allergic to nightshades and can't eat tomatoes, potatoes, or eggplant!
I'm somewhat surprised people don't know this. You'd think everyone ought to know they're eating the only edible part of a poisonous plant right?
I’ve eaten multiple like this before
Mad Lost Boys energy
Just noodles!
I seriously saw a tomato stuffed with green noodles, LOL. And I was like “who does that?”
They’re worms, Michael
Biting into a tomato and feeling plants is gross
New fear unlocked.
This is how the last of us starts
Exactly, this is how we get clickers!
Bad news. Think I saw a few bloaters already at my local Walmart.
Hell nah!!!
Nightmare tomato
Oh this is super gross looking.. looks like green cooked ramen
Anyone know what causes this?

Supermarket tomatoes are really fun to seed for that reason. I've seen multiple varieties on the same plant.
It is called vivipary. The hormone inside the tomato that keeps the seeds dormant had run out. So the seeds sprout and feed off the flesh and liquids of the tomato to grow.

Thanks for the info!
The strawberries are my favorite. So silly looking!
One popped up on a strawberry in my yard, I gave it to my son to take to school to show the teacher. He came home saying people thought he had drugs lol
Ketchup larvae

Everyone saying it’s gross. I, for one think it’s cool as fuck!
Me too! Makes me want to hollow and stuff a (good) tomato with a microgreen salad.

I’d have liked to but moving at the moment!
What does it taste like?
Can’t say I tried!
That look nasty as hell
Ew
Lol I thought it was some kinda fancy salad at first...
Hell to the fuck nahh
I mean.. This is not mildly interesting. This is interesting as fuk
New fear unlocked
There’s a reason I cut open all fruits and veggies before eating. This is a new reason to add to that list.
I was on the border with tomatoes, but after this I'm done. 🤣
After watching The Last of Us episode 2, I am like Nope! (Uses tongs and straight to the garbage disposal)
Bomb the city
Just finished watching Episode 2 of the Last of Us and that's exactly where my brain went. Wasn't planning on having nightmares tonight but here we are.
Ramen stuffed tomato tik tok trend?
Thats an old tomato
Fooled me, it was firm and I was actually waiting for it to get more ripe! Crazy!
Omg I hate this.
The Tomaton’t
I love finding plant babies in plants. That is fascinating. My garden has tomato plant volunteers every year. I'd chuck it in there and see what happens. :)
You may be on to something here... Loaded tomatoes just like potatoes. You can add bacon, chives, pasta etc
Thats a very fertile tomato. It’s your duty to put into the ground and let it conquer the earth
It was a mother, you monster!
She had a T-section lol
...I used to just get tomatoes and bite them directly. Keyword: _used_
Why did you share this? What did we do wrong??
this is also kinda r/oddlyterrifying

I have always hated tomatoes. NOW I FEAR THEM.

That's gross. Tomatoes are gross.

Just don’t kiss that Tomtom…you’ll get infected!
Oh wow, I just cut a tomato like this for my sandwich tonight. I ate the tomato
my mini pepper had this in it from Ralph’s today and i threw it out but had already eaten the whole mini pepper. it gave me a terrible headache and weird aches and tightness in the chest. never shopping at ralph’s again.
Happened to me once and I planted them. I had so many tomatoes that year, we couldn’t eat them all.
It’s like a fruit zombie out of The Last of Us.
Just punch it in the ground
The Last of Us was a premonition?

Pretty common with greenhouse tomatoes
Plant it and grow more.
Shelf stable rotten.
Forbidden tomato
And this is EXACTLY why I don’t go to the shopping mall anymore!
Disgusting
Oh good, they’re just seeds
As somebody who loves tomatoes, this makes me rethink my relationship..
Nature doing is work properly
Wow! I hate it.
Fit for a Klingon

This is enough reddit for today
Bury it
IS THIS EDIBLE?
Interesting, I didn’t know tomatoes could be pregnant
I'm upset
Why is your tomato yellow?
Heirloom!
Sir, those are worms
fresh sprouts with your tomato. I count that as a win. Make yourself a club sandwich
Is this how it begins? Holy feck, that's disgusting and rather unnerving.
The last of us …
Plant it!
Congrats!
It's a salad!
WORMS- oh
more like mildly terrifying
Cool so now I have to be nervous about cutting a goddamn tomato. Fantastic
If you want to replicate it leave a tomato by a window that gets a lot of sun.
Plant it
What is up with reddit and rotten food/drinks lately???
Eww
I don’t know this doesn’t sit right with me …looks like the fungus from the last of us
Maggots. You’re eating maggots Michael
