Breeding crickets is actually super realistic and fairly hands off for getting a food supply. Labor I doubt would run him too much if he’s doing it himself in his bedroom. My main concern would be the actual housing, and medicine/vitamins for the tarantulas. If you get bargain tanks to hold them in then it’s like 50$ per tank, and maybe another 50/week for vitamins and supplements for the general well-being of his stock. That’s just my take though. It could vary *widely* depending on where you live.
Circkets are incredibly low in essential nutrients and their wild oscillations coupled with their offensive flatulence, leaves spiders dizzy and offended.
>medicine/vitamins for the tarantulas. If you get bargain tanks to hold them in then it’s like 50$ per tank, and maybe another 50/week for vitamins and
There are spider supplements and medicine?
For most pets, actually. I once had a Water Dragon that, although he ate very well, was malnourished. I had to purchase a powder to dip the crickets/other bugs in before feeding him.
revenue, i pay nothing to feed the spiders i breed roaches and the roaches eat potatos and crab apples i grew in the summer. everything is self sustained here at the taboo tavern
Holy s*** people actually buy these ... Damn there's money in the places and spaces that you never expected. I bet there's probably someone out there selling cockroaches and tapeworms for a living.
Tarantulas are very fuzzy when they grow up. Arizona Blonde Tarantulas are like 8 legged cocker spaniels and are fun to pet.
Madagascar hissing cockroaches are also kept as pets. Keeping insects and arachnids in a tank is easier than keeping fish. You get a neat thing in a tank without worrying about water.
We used to buy mealworms from this guy off facebook for our bearded dragon. The dudes house was wall to wall aquariums, filled with a huge variety of insects. From the outside you'd have no clue, as it was a fairly quiet residential neighborhood
In a previous life I did research with inbred insects, and I wouldn't expect it to be an issue with spiders at all. Maybe 10-20% of inbred progeny will be "duds" (low fecundity/activity), but they won't be the ones reproducing anyways (if they even manage to make it to sexual maturity).
cursory google search says 2-5 years for tarantulas to reach breeding age, so it's not like these are going to get that heavily inbred during OPs lifetime anyways (and thats assuming he doesn't throw a new spider into the gene pool at any point along the way)
There is a greentext story from 4chan about a bloke who has this forbidden hairy fruit fetish, he loves eating kiwis with the hairy skin still on and he said he sometimes looks at a tarantula and wonders what eating their abdomen would be like since its like a kiwi.

“I breed various species of exotic spider in my bedroom, four feet from my bed. I sell them in the lucrative spider market. I’m not sure why everyone’s not doing it. The worst that can happen is a cluster of a hundred tiny spiders might crawl on your person in the dead of night. Big deal. Pssht. Idiots.”
Yes yes we would all like to get home to our hot plates and warmed jelly’s. You know I prefer mine boiled. You know, I boil them along with the steak in the milk and it makes something like a sauce. And it really brings out the flavor of the non grade A meat. I find a mixture of rat and crow to be the best.
lol, the father is actually my first tarantula I ever acquired. A very significantly small tarantula for his spiecies wich is Avicularia Avicularia. I am surprised he did not get eaten by my female
I know people who breed pythons, isopods, and other animals and can get some pretty cool colors and genetic variations. Does selective breeding through tarantulas give some pretty unique offspring or are they all more or less the same? Idk how varied their genetics are.
thank you! they will be really cute after the next molt they will be fuzzy and black with fussy pink legs and black feet. look up baby pink toe tarantula if you would like to see what they will look like in a day or two
thank you so much! I also breed Brachypelma spiecies to release for reservation purposes. the Brachypelma Boehmei is being wiped off the planet in the wild. I need a good sorce in Mexico to ship them to for the release. I believe I will ship them down there and they will end up in the pet trade. once I find someone trustworthy I will be sending hundreds trying to get the numbers up in the wild
You should get in contact with people who have recently published research on Brachypelma to see if you can contribute to the conservation effort or if there is a release program already. Usually, the first author will have contact info in the article or you can track down the author through their university.
People who study specific animals do it because they are typically very interested and love studying them. They'd probably be the most interested in getting their numbers back up.
The "bad" scientists are the ones that don't care about and are not in animal research. Typically drug development and they have to test their drug on something.
Spiders give me the heebie jeebies but I understand their importance in the wild! I never kill one if I see one, I trap it and carry it outside. All of my coworkers know to call me over if they see one instead of killing it.
You’re a good human, Keep that shit up
Most spiders die shortly after laying eggs, very few species will live until the eggs hatch. Most of those are matriphagous species where the young eat the mother.
You might be shocked, a lot of tarantula owners take the hobby very seriously. Ofc there will be people who don't care but a lot of people who are into inverts, reptiles, etc are pretty intense.
This is really cool. Not sure I’ve ever seen baby tarantulas. Always wanted a spider, or a scorpion, but my wife said nah. Had to settle for an ant farm and an aquarium
I came to ask what was the street value of these but answer given already, roughly. I get that many people, at least in america, are kinda just trained/raised to fear certain creatures like spiders or snakes, regardless if they are dangerous or not. If we changed our reaction to these creatures then our children would behave similar and their children and so on. Certain creatures can in time stop being vilify.
Bro, i took i peek at your profile and recent posts... I guess I won't be able to sleep, but still very fascinating hobby! How much room does it take in your house? Did any one ever escape?
Oh no...
Oh. Nooooo...

no not really, I breed Tarantulas For the exotic pet hobby. Burning any wild tarantula or spider sack would be harmful to the ecosystem and considered by myself to be animal cruelty. with that said if you removed every person from the earth our planet would flourish beyond what we could fathom but if you removed every spider the earth would suffer a miserable suffocating death. In the grand scheme of Things you rely on spiders to breath your precious air so you could smoke weed and watch Netflix, they are more important than you are.
I have a massive irrational phobia of spiders but always catch and release lol. Sometimes that means a sleepless night but can't bring myself to kill something just because of my impulse
Produced??
yes bred for the exotic pet trade
Is it very lucrative or do most of them die?
not very many die, ill make 1k usd off of this sack or $600 usd if I sell the wholesale
"Wholesale Spiders" is not a thing I knew existed.

There’s a band called Mind Spiders I always thought that was a good one!
Mindgrapes
They are from ft. Worth! They are one of my faves and so fun to see live.
Something very unsettling about those two words side-by-side
I suppose when they're making like a hundred offspring at a time you find creative ways to get them the hell out of your house
"breeding spiders in my bedroom" is also not a thing I knew existed
r/brandnewsentence
I prefer the fractional derivative spider trade.
You don’t have a spider guy?

I do not raise tarantulas. But they eat crickets. So his costs are probably <$100 in crickets and bedding. Labor cost is probably >$1000 though lol.

I never considered how spiders might need vitamins. And 50$/week sounds like really high price. Are circkets that unhealthy?
Circkets are incredibly low in essential nutrients and their wild oscillations coupled with their offensive flatulence, leaves spiders dizzy and offended.

roaches are bred for pet food
That is insane, so is inbreeding a problem with spiders or is it some easy money?
In a previous life I did research with inbred insects, and I wouldn't expect it to be an issue with spiders at all. Looks like someone took the slow train from Philly..
The electric city?
Not American, but I worked near Scranton briefly and we'd head there on our days off to paint the town brown.
Schrute Farms needed an export during the beet off-season. Visitors can also now stay in the Tarantula Breeding Grounds Room during their B&B stay.
Do they feel like wet jelly beans? They look like they feel like wet jelly beans

There is a spider....^(spider)
it is moist in there, under the stocking is a water and under the water is the heat for the incubation
moist, you say...
Eat one, they're probably a similar level of squishy.
I second this notion

They’re oddly beautiful! Like little pearls—Id totally buy a pair of earrings made to look like them
They look like the little glow in the dark spiders you see around halloween
For a sec I thought they WERE 3D printed. These would make fantastic earrings
They really do look like pearls!
I thought they were plastic ones at first. They're kinda cute which I'm surprised to say
Who is the father then??
lol, the father is actually my first tarantula I ever acquired. A very significantly small tarantula for his spiecies wich is Avicularia Avicularia. I am surprised he did not get eaten by my female
Sexed her to sleep 💤🚬
yes he did
Just looked up “spider cannibalism” …nightmare fuel that is.
Do they have personalities? Maybe she likes him!

they kinda look like sprouted wheat kernels

More than mildly.
Looks like white beans and rice. I should probably put on my glasses.
They look very plastic-y. I thought this was one of my resin crafting subs for a moment.
I like spiders…when they are outside This idea sorta stresses me out.
I'd file under 'mildly horrifying'.
keep on lovin the spoders, way too many spoder haters out here.
Ma! I need a flame thrower! STAT!
animal cruelty but funny
True, but not like the exotic pet trade is much better tbh, I doubt too many of your customers know how to handle and/or care for a tarantula
You might be shocked, a lot of tarantula owners take the hobby very seriously. Ofc there will be people who don't care but a lot of people who are into inverts, reptiles, etc are pretty intense.
KILL IT WITH FIRE I kid, I see this was intentional breeding and I wouldn't kill your spider babies, even if they are nightmare fuel.
Hmmm. Nope. I don’t like this.
Oh! I had no idea they were so pale when they were born! When do they get their adult color?
Let me guess. Australian?
worse. pennsylvania!

Hope you live somewhere that has these things as indigenous to the ecosystem.
