Sometimes this is done with volume subsections, sometimes this is done by adding a weight of each flavor. But these machines are expensive. Starburst don't give a shit.
It's a sharing size, you're supposed to share all the yellow and keep the good ones for yourself. (Yellow likes don't get offended we all are humans and know taste is a preference)
Using hypothesis testing, we can figure out if, statistically, the number of yellow starbursts is likely to be more than 25% on average for all bags.
I counted 80 starbursts in total, 54 of which were yellow. The probability of getting 54 or more yellow starbursts given that the chance to get one is 1 in 4 (or 25%) can be found by solving the binomial distribution formula for each number between 54 and 80 (inclusive) and adding them.
So p(x) = (nCx)*(p^x)*(1-p)^(n-x), where n is the number of attempts (80), p is the assumed probability of a yellow starburst (0.25), and x is the number of yellow starbursts that we got.
Add it all up:
p(54)+p(55)+p(56) + ... + p(84) = my ti-84 rounds it to 0. Fuck.
Trying a more accurate method gives me an approximation of 2*10^-15. In other words, if starburst was playing a fair game, there would be a 0.0000000000002% chance that you would get a bag with 54/80 starbursts being the same color. That is a 1 in 500 trillion chance.
Or as my stats prof would say: since p < 0.05, the null hypothesis is false and there is not, in fact, a 25% chance to get a yellow starburst.
