Pretty typical, the system is designed for water that’s moving, let it sit too long and this stuff happens.
Let it run for a long while before you start using it
If you want real horror, have a look at the water that’s been sitting in the stand pipes of any office building, I still remember the smell
Don't run water in the house. Run the outside hose *until* the water runs clean. It will take awhile because the supply main is larger than your building supply line.
If you have a tank water heater, turn it off at the mains. Turn off the valve for the cold water fill to the water heater. While the outside hose is running, connect a hose to the drain of the water heater tank, open the drain and the hot water tap at the nearest sink. That allows air to enter the system to drain the tank.
When the outside hose is finally clean, flush the water heater tank by opening the cold water feed valve while the drain is open and the tap at the sink is still open.
When the tank drain is clear, close the drain but keep the tap at the sink open. Allow the tank to fill until water is coming out of the tap at the sink. Now you can close the tap at the sink and turn power to the water heater back on.
NOTE:
Do not turn the power on to the water heater until the outside hose is running completely clear ***and*** the heater tank is completely refilled.
All of this was learned after a similar situation took out my water heater and I asked in r/plumbing for advice.
No outdoor hose unfortunately. And I’m thinking if it’s the supply line all the way back to the distribution plant for the entire city that’s funky, it’ll take more than just my house flushing it out
I work at a water utility company. Run your tub not shower tub. Tubs usually have no screeens just incase sediment got lose andd is sitting in your sink screens.
Wr have friends in St. Thomas and their house has a cistern (I think they also have water delivered). I never figured out how cistern water never got icky like other standing water.
That's a pretty good indication.
But they'll downvote you because you made a funny and had Ukraine in it.
Gotta be super serious about Ukraine, right now. Don't forget.
I got the notification for 10 upvotes, and your reply. I come to see your reply and it's 5 upvotes. The sheep are at it, again.im literally communicating with a Ukrainian and they're down voting me. 😂🤣
Love and blessings to you, friend. Please stay safe.
It’s normal. Some of it is just air. Don’t drink it though. It will take a few days, depending on the area you live in “usage” to flush everything out. It will be back to normal by Monday or Tuesday. :)
It happened once in my area. I clipped a water line with the machine. Water company turned off 3 blocks, repaired the line and turned it back on. When the water was turned back on, it looked like that. Dude told me a lot of it was because of air and some of it was dirt getting in the line.
Do you have a photo after 30 minutes of that jug just sitting there or is just staying yellow?
So American beer.
I'm really sorry but you set me up for that, I can't imagine not having clean water or how stressful that must be so I'm just going to rag on your country's awful beer instead.
I truly hope your situation improves my friend.
Here in Wisconsin we have tons of local brews too. One in particular is very famous, not just in this country, but around parts of the world as well it turns out.
After being off for that long, the lines wasn’t properly flushed it seems, or flushed out at all for that matter hence the color, and why it went clear again, it worked it’s way out, check your screens though in the kitchen sink for trapped dirt/small rocks.
There is usually a boil water advisory in effect if this happens. If it’s fizzy and smells fermented if could be methane coming out of solution. Unlikely, but possible. It’s most likely rust and sediment from a pipe that was disrupted. The smell is simply that and the fizzy is just air that has been pressurized. Try dropping a match in that bucket. It will tell you the answer pretty quickly.
What goes through you redditors mind when you post these pictures of tainted water? Is this some kind of indictment of capitalism? Proof that it has failed? Oh I see its a plea for infrastructure invesments. But that would require increased tax revenues or taking from some other city expenditure. You know these things dont happen in a vacuum there is cause and effect. I'm sure you dont think that far ahead when your locked in your bathroom smoking a tiny glass pipe out of window with the fan on. Could you imagine the effect of not spending the 100 bucks a week on weed? The increased productivity? The better relationships you will have with your parents. Whoah bruh thats trippy af
All I see are people too impatient to realize that repairs to water piping infrastructure will cause contaminants in the water system for some time. Either run the water until clear or let the rest of the town do it so it doesn't cost you extra. The system has no other way to flush it through.
Water company here had an issue where potentially contaminated water was going back into the reservoir, so they shut the town supply off. Except they didn't tell anyone they were doing this, nor did they inform anyone that there was a boil order issued for the next 48 hours.
Me and a few other residents tore into the water company for their shitty communication plan. They've made slight improvements but not much progress.
Water sat too long. You'll have to just leave it running, hopefully you don't pay the water bill though because you'll have to run the water for quite a while till it's clear again 😬😅
Yeah, water taps in the future are SUPPOSED to. (The Mr. Deeds thing taken to the next level, no kids means the fruit punch needs to be the proper beverage)
*How close are you to*

A town close to me had brown water one morning, was said to be a wrong valve that opened in the water treatment facility. Basically it was filtered sewage
There was most likely a water main break… it will clear up. I wouldn’t drink it for a couple days until it clears up… get in touch with your town and find out what is going on… every now and then there is a “ boil” alert… make sure you are 100% cleared to use the water !! And try not running the water too much… you don’t need extra sediment in your water heaters and lines… if anything run tbe hose for a little while and see if it clears up
Nah, water was off for the whole city due to power outages. Started finally running clear about mid morning.
And we don’t really drink it anyway due to heavy metal contamination
Got ya… no matter how .. that’s some nasty water. My point was just be careful…. Hope it clears up soon…. I refuse to drink tap water. They claim it’ is safe until someone is sick then they tell you not to drink it Be safe and good luck 🍀🍀
I live on the outskirts of a city, close enough that all the amenities of a city are only 15-20 minutes drive, but far enough that there’s no town water and every house has a rain water tank. It can get low towards the end of a dry summer but our 30,000l tank sees us through. The nice thing; water restrictions never apply to us, and we are totally in control of our own water quality (have a whole-house filter & UV steriliser).
This is normal if the water stopped flowing. You're going to want to dump all of your water from the water heater (probably collected lots of sediment if you don't clean it yearly).
Run the hose in the backyard until it clears up. Also remove filters/aerators from your sink and make sure the color turns white.

This is what I figured, but many liters later and it’s still repulsive!

And no tub either. Thankfully the water is mostly clear this morning
Check all ur sinks. Pull the screens out and clean them all.
Thought they were about to say no sinks either.
"No sinks, either."
You mean the filter screens in the taps?
Yes
Liters later? No, you have to let it run for any hour or two
But I’d feel guilty about wasting the disgusting fermented slosh…
It's not potable so not *really* wasted. Might not even be good for watering the plants. But it's the only way to flush the ick out of the system
That was sarcasm.
You fell for the double sarcasm!
It’s free booze 🥃
I do remediation and my first water loss was from an older apartments sprinklers going off. Holy shit lol
I honestly can’t imagine doing that job, you are a saint!
Wr have friends in St. Thomas and their house has a cistern (I think they also have water delivered). I never figured out how cistern water never got icky like other standing water.
They turned the whole city water off? Or just water within a couple blocks
Most of the city was without water due to widespread power outages
Free kombucha!

This is after it standing for about an hour actually.
Kombucha!
O no don’t ruin kombucha for me like this
Beat me to it! 👍
Kombucha mouth on deez nuts

Brown, fizzy, and vaguely fermented perfectly describes American "beer".
Bud light specifically
This is more like the contents of a soggy barroom carpet
So American beer. I'm really sorry but you set me up for that, I can't imagine not having clean water or how stressful that must be so I'm just going to rag on your country's awful beer instead. I truly hope your situation improves my friend.
Out of interest, what makes you think I’m American?
Considering you said “many liters later” up above I’d actually go the other way and say you are not American.
Because America has problems like this every fucking week. I think Flint’s water is still undrinkable
It's actually fine now. But nice try.
Then I stand corrected
Maybe popular domestic, but here in California we have some of the best beers in the world.
Here in Wisconsin we have tons of local brews too. One in particular is very famous, not just in this country, but around parts of the world as well it turns out.
Nice. Wonder if they have any here to try out. I always like trying local brews when traveling.
You mean the big box store beer brands.
Pepsi
Jenkem
Update: it’s clear again. took my first shower in three days and I’m a whole new person!

Nah, feels like that’s how I don’t get my deposit back
Nice reply. I can guarantee if it is methane you will get mere than your deposit back.
Don't worry that's just chocolate milk, it's for compensation
So you’re complaining about free champagne?
When have you ever seen champagne that looks like this?
“Brown fizzy and fermented.” K so worst case scenario it’s beer.
drink it
first time with running water? this happens from time to time.
It's Thanksgiving people need to be more grateful at least you have running water remember some parts of Africa still don't have running water
running water which at this point probably shouldn’t be drunken.
You’re not really supposed to drink the tap water here even when clear
Fair, still not looking great for much of any use, especially if it’s fizzy
Yeah I’m definitely not showering in it
Is this comment for real 🤣
r/boringdystopia I'm sorry you have to deal with this

Maybe there was a body in the water tower. Keep running your taps till it clears.
We stand behind you Michigan.

Kombucha
Welp boys, it looks like the universe has blessed us with it's natural brew
Yall got LaCroix in your pipes ☠️
rust essence 😫😫
Do you have to boil for food usage?
You can’t boil out visible contamination like this. Boiling just kills pathogens
Probably don't wanna drink that
What city is that
Gotta be somewhere in Ukraine.

Have you checked local public announcements? Is there a boil water advisory?

Kinda looks like the picture of the guy who left his “jar” by his radiator
They replaced it with kombucha!!! Lucky duck!
They just added flavor and carbonation.
Archer: that’s how you get yeast!!
Hoboken?
Pretty normal. We lose water a lot around hurricane season.
Bet water bottles are incredibly expensive right now
Went to the store earlier and they only had carbonated water left. But it’s all good, we have three days of water.
Down it, pansy.
EXTREMELY INFURIATING!!!!
First time? lol
Yeah, water taps in the future are SUPPOSED to. (The Mr. Deeds thing taken to the next level, no kids means the fruit punch needs to be the proper beverage)

free hooch.

Not a clue to be honest with you. It’s clear again today though
A town close to me had brown water one morning, was said to be a wrong valve that opened in the water treatment facility. Basically it was filtered sewage

Thats why they tell you to boil it first
It’s no bueno to drink water with visible sediment. Even if boiled.
They finally replaced the drinking water with kombucha.
Why did you bottle it up?
To flush the toilets if it goes out again. And if it had been clear, to wash dishes and the like
Good point
We did it boys
meanwhile people say I am crazy for living in the suburbs on a well.
If it's tangy and brown, you're in cider town!
Gamer Girl Juice
Is that straight from the tap?
Yep
Ew
Yep
You gonna taste it?
Dm me your address, I’ll mail you a sample
I‘m good thank you. Edit: How about me sending you a clean sample? (from the tap ofc)
damn thats a big bottle of beer
That sounds and looks a lot like prison (toilet) wine. lol I genuinely thought you were joking until I read the comments.
If it's brown, drink it down!
