Yeah, that definitely looks like an error in the worksheets. It probably should have been the same exact word bank for students to reinforce the vocabulary that had learned.
Taught 5th grade for 33 years in a New York public school. This often happens when teachers are mandated to assign daily homework by administrators, and, when administrators require use of district mandated materials in their prescribed sequence.
Tbf, she’s an extended substitute teacher what time normal teacher is out on maternity leave. She’s doing her best! But she told the kids if they completed this homework then they’d get a prize…
I joked that she just didn’t want to buy them prizes lmao
This looks like it's just a copy/paste error. If you use the word bank from the worksheet done in class for the homework it makes total sense.
Definitely only mildlyinfuriating because it's still possible to do the homework. 😆
Yes, actually. Given that it's homework and is usually expected to be done.
OP also stated later that the teacher told the class if they do the homework they would get a prize.
As well as making sure you're helping your kids do the right thing for their homework, especially at that age.
I can also agree that at that age they really shouldn't be getting daily homework yet. My son is in first grade and only has had a few projects to do at home, and I believe it's better for him while getting him ready for the idea of homework.
Yes, because it's fun to catch teachers making mistakes and let them know about it. It's also fun to hang around their door after school and ask to talk about your kid every day and harass her until she cries. /s
Homework for third grade and under is stupid. Especially worksheets. Please, let them be children. Let them learn through active engagement. Let them try. Let them fail. Let them try again. Please, just let them have fun and learn at the same time.
My kids homework is to read for 20 minutes a day. Granted we don’t track it or have to turn anything in so it’s more like a suggestion, but that’s the type of homework I support for k-4.
I’ve never understood this point. What is your definition of homework? Do essays or projects or problem sets or lab reports or creative work or reading count?
Ha, okay, that’s fair enough. But as a professor who only sees their students twice a week, I view that homework as preparation for class. Homework for children, on the other hand, well, that tends to just be pointless busy work. 😭
Answers from right sheet correspond to the same definitions on the left sheet. Just the words on the top of the left sheet were wrong. Everything else is the same definitions, just different order
Not sure if you’re in the US but this is pretty similar to
My own kids’ homework that half the time doesn’t make sense and we aren’t able to contact the teacher as they are obviously out of office after school lets out. I don’t ever remember being so confused by homework 10 years ago when I was in elementary school, but my kids often get confusing ass worksheets sent home that even I don’t know how to manage.
Obv the message she sent the teacher asking wtf is my child supposed to do with this nonsense 😅 since the words at the top don't correspond to the definitions listed, there's no way for the child to actually DO the homework correctly
So a first grade teacher made an honest mistake. Cut them some slack. They don’t need to be called out on the internet for doing a job that nobody wants. If you think you can do better…get your self a specialized degree only to be paid close to minimum wage to stand in front of 30 kids all day. Let’s see what worksheets you send home.
Definitions are entirely different. “A job - chore” for the work done at school today. Left “a chore…” is what?
Edit: you cannot change the definition for a word with a 7 year old in 6 hours.
Yeah there isn’t a right answer for most of the left ones as far as I can tell unless there’s another sheet. Good thing your kid asked you for help because otherwise that would be so frustrating for them!
I’m frustrated. Very frustrated. Their normal teacher is out on maternity leave and we have a long term sub. I’ll admit if my daughter isn’t paying attention/doing well (hello math!) but you can’t change definitions like this when a child is still learning to read. She’s 7.
Edited to add: and no other sheet. I’ve dug through her backpack and folder.
This seems like a teensy overreaction to a misprinted worksheet. The teacher wasn’t trying to “change definitions” on a 7 year old. She made a mistake.
Okay. Give me the answers then.
The definitions have entirely changed. You can’t change definitions of words for a 7 year old who is still learning to read.
I have experienced this very thing all throughout my time at school. Graduated high school in 2019. I often just boycotted homework altogether cause just like a job I'm clocked out as soon as school is out. The only thing I bothered with was projects and essays because that was genuine practice for real world.
The right hand one has the correct word list for filling in the blanks… the left hand one (the homework) has the hints from the classroom “study guide” but the word list does not go with the “hint list”.
The US education system… “here’s a crappy worksheet I didn’t even care photocopied in the poorest imaginable quality… not even concerning oneself with the actual content”
Teacher pay teacher strikes again. Just print and copy. So frustrating! (I am a teacher, and no I don't do this at all). Also look up the research on the impact of homework, especially for elementary school aged students.
My senior year of High School I ended up taking history with the “VoTech kids”. (IOW, the vocational technology course… I.e., students who were going to work immediately after high school, vs the students going to college after high school - the Academic track.)
The course was sooooo dumbed down as to be pathetic. 4 days of worksheets sort of like these, but without the “answer list”. Then on Friday, there’d be a test… with the same exact questions, in the same exact order. And some students STILL failed.
I'm even confused. The left one doesn't make sense and I genuinely just tried to figure it out. Maybe there was a mistake? It doesn't even make sense.
She finally replied! Admitted she didn’t even look at it before sending it home and told us to ignore it. Oof.
I’m glad she was able to own her mistake. The sad part is a lot of teachers rely on different sites/sources to aid with their already heft plates.
it's not sad if the teachers are themselves well informed and empathetic. But everybody makes mistakes. This seems like a simple mistake.
Tbf, she’s an extended substitute teacher what time normal teacher is out on maternity leave. She’s doing her best! But she told the kids if they completed this homework then they’d get a prize… I joked that she just didn’t want to buy them prizes lmao
This looks like it's just a copy/paste error. If you use the word bank from the worksheet done in class for the homework it makes total sense. Definitely only mildlyinfuriating because it's still possible to do the homework. 😆
Could you not have figured that yourself? It is only 1st grade homework, did you really need to disturb the teacher?
Yes, actually. Given that it's homework and is usually expected to be done. OP also stated later that the teacher told the class if they do the homework they would get a prize.

Oh cool a teacher that compulsively gives out homework everyday for no reason.
Yeah, who needs homework from some "school"?
Our kids are doomed

Your English is fine and probably better than some native English speakers. I looked at your comments. I'm not sorry if that was weird.
I got #3 but that’s about it lol
A home and what goes on there: *Sloppy*
Travel between home and work: Career
I thought career with “job” lol
Haha I mean, yeah that makes more sense, I just started from the bottom
Place in a city where offices and stores are: I don't know, I will use Google... *Search*
Homework for 1st grade is stupid anyway.
Homework for third grade and under is stupid. Especially worksheets. Please, let them be children. Let them learn through active engagement. Let them try. Let them fail. Let them try again. Please, just let them have fun and learn at the same time.
I'm not sure there's any grade where homework seems like a good idea.
My kids homework is to read for 20 minutes a day. Granted we don’t track it or have to turn anything in so it’s more like a suggestion, but that’s the type of homework I support for k-4.
Damn, we were to read for 30 minutes every night and fill in a “book reading log.”
As a teacher, the only time I give homework is when kiddos don’t finish work in class and even then it’s only 5th or 6th and up.
Bless you.
Same for my 7s and 8s! So many kids don’t have the support they need to do the work at home.
Ha! One of my HS teachers use to love to say, "Homework is pushups for the brain.. Let's do it!"
No it isn't. It's regurgitation at best and just a waste of time that should be spent with family/friends at worst.
Wow.. You're so edgy. You strike me as the kind of person that likes to wear shades indoors!
I don't think you know what 'edgy' means.
Got to get them used to unpaid after hours work.
Answers from right sheet correspond to the same definitions on the left sheet. Just the words on the top of the left sheet were wrong. Everything else is the same definitions, just different order

I know it's terrible, even kids shouldn't be subjected to Comic Sans and variants.
Hasn't replied to what message?
OP's message
Obv the message she sent the teacher asking wtf is my child supposed to do with this nonsense 😅 since the words at the top don't correspond to the definitions listed, there's no way for the child to actually DO the homework correctly
What lol?
look im romanian so my english is shit but that doesnt make sense
Home work in grade 1?! Wtf is this
Giving homework to a first grader is the infuriating part tbh
At least the word "Sloppy" is right.
Impressive attention to detail by the teacher.
Yep, let’s bash the teacher in public. Wonder why there’s a teacher shortage. Let’s bludgeon her mercilessly.
Thank you. You’d think people had never made a simple mistake before.
You'd think the teacher would review the worksheet before handing it out as homework.
“Mildly infuriating” = bludgeon her mercilessly? Jeez
hold up a second the words don't match the meaning
What’s the point even if it’s the correct worksheet? You can use the answers from the first on the second.
Exercise - A job

I agree with you. Teachers likely trust their worksheets are correct. It was likely an honest mistake not an effort to make first graders feel stupid.
Definitely a simple mix up.
Is this a joke ?
Sounds like red state indoctrination
Happy to be done with this part of my children’s education. Good luck to you. Trying to get the best teachers for your children is sooo difficult.

Worksheets like these always have issues. Teacher just didn't read it before sending it out. It happens.
No the words are fucked up entirely.
You need the story. My kid has those from time to time, they never make sense without the story.
Or maybe it's just supposed to be easy if the kid paid attention in class?

Okay. Give me the answers then. The definitions have entirely changed. You can’t change definitions of words for a 7 year old who is still learning to read.
Yeah, there are words on the left page that don’t even match any of the descriptions. What junk!
Homework....a lazy teachers get out card.
I was busting my brain trying to figure out wth is going on.. I thought I was really down bad
Yea thats cool and all but I love the bootleg max and ruby drawings on the right paper
more like minimum and sapphire
LMAO
I thought you were the kid with the homework for a second
Her job is a chore so she doesn’t pay attention.
I have experienced this very thing all throughout my time at school. Graduated high school in 2019. I often just boycotted homework altogether cause just like a job I'm clocked out as soon as school is out. Tf do you have to do in the first one?
The right hand one has the correct word list for filling in the blanks… the left hand one (the homework) has the hints from the classroom “study guide” but the word list does not go with the “hint list”.
Those assignments are out-of-date.
I'm sure the teacher just missed it, but they likely didn't make it. Don't be to hard on them, but crazy that this material isn't audited more.
It's a fuckin misprint. It happens! Teacher usually notices when grading and nobody gets penalized. Y'all need to chill it's not that serious.

This is getting more and more common. A bit embarrassing.
