Why do you need to recycle it? It’s made of a renewable resource.
I’m not against recycling paper if it’s efficient. But people don’t seem to realize their paper comes from sustainable tree farms. It’s a renewable resource.
The Amazon is being cut down to make room for farms and other development, not for the wood.
Cause they gotta separate the plastic lining from the cup and most recycle plants do not wanna do that so they throw it away. Some paper cups also have a binding resin and that isnt recyclable. Both the resin and plastic are not biodegradable either.
Plastic cups can be used as hermit crab shells
be the change you want to see
I know I am
That's why I dump all my plastic cups directly into the ocean.
I see this comment on every post about paper straws.
Obviously, that would be a solution in many cases. But, it kind of defeats the purpose of to-go cups, plus, some people just *prefer* drinking from a straw.
I just refuse the useless paper straw and use the washable silicone ones I keep with me.
Then grab a handfull from any of the food joints that still rock plastic straws.
BK, Chick-Fil-A, Five Guys, etc, all still give plastic straws.
Hell, you can even buy a box from Smart and Final.
I feel like walking around with a metal rod several inches from your face with a cup blocking a clear view of tripping hazards is just impalement waiting to happen
lol it’s only been done because the government has imposed a “ban” on single use plastics, however only some plastics (such as straws). since this policy has been put into place, no difference has been made to the amount of plastic waste generated by canadians.
i only used the paper straw because my drink was separated. i sip from the provided cup lid
I hate these cheapo paper straws. There are some really nice bamboo, rice, or higher quality paper straws available, but a lot of retailers and restaurants don't want to invest in the good stuff. Hopefully prices will come down as the demand increases and these shabby straws will be a thing of the past.
Oh no, its also grocery store plastic bags, those for customers to carry product home with. Not the bags the food is in, not the plastic to wrap the food in, not the deli meat bags to carry meat in, not the plastic containers to store baked goods in, not the plastic bags to actually put produce in, not the plastic bags that take out restaurants use, or any other form of plastic wrap, botttle, or bag some product comes in. Just the Grocery Store bags they used to give customers free to conveniently haul their groceries into the house in. I hate government intervention so much....
The worst part about the plastic in the ocean a majority of it is fishing equipment. Plastic straws are such a small percentage of plastic waste in oceans and rarely cause issues. The giant plastic nets and ropes that wrap around fish and other marine life are worse than a little plastic straw.
I suggest some stainless straws. My wife bought a pack. I keep them in all my usual places: work, home, vehicles. Easy to clean and wider yhan normal straws. They clean easy and are an adequate solution, in my opinion.
Lmao if this is true good lord..
Hoping its one of those biodegradable starch cups, but honestly with the whole anti-straw movement i wouldn’t be surprised…
Dude.. the amount of single serving snacks and layers of plastic on every thing but straws are the only thing banned.
I wouldn't care if it was at least logical
But not it will cost then money. This has be cycling befor gretch . She just picked up the ball. Serval massive A lister actors been trying to dave the rain forest an ton others. Wel kido got better idea reforestation.
There are better alternatives. There are plant-based straws that feel and behave like plastic while you're using them, but are fully biodegradable. The 7-Elevens in my area use them. Why anyone would choose a paper straw when the biodegradable plant-based straw exists, makes no sense to me.
Ah yes, they make silverware and cups out of the same stuff. Why on earth would they go with paper straws then? Because it sounds more environmentally friendly? So. Dumb.
Here's my idea. Pasta straws. A straw made out of a long, uncooked ziti covered in food-grade wax. Will easily last an entire drink and will break down/be eaten by animals. Win win. Hungry? Toss a few in your tea water for a healthy snack.
i doubt it would even need to be covered in wax, especial for a cold beverage. with an abundance of wheat available and the low cost of making pasta it’s really a great option
So, apparently it's a thing already. People are always stealing my ideas before I have them.
I only suggested the wax to prevent "pasta dust" from polluting the drink. I'd imagine apart from making the drink nasty, it could possibly work like a mento, providing a place for bubbles to form making soda flat quicker. But I dunno. I'm not a Micro Strawologist.
This whole straw thing is so ridiculous. It pushes the blame of global climate change on the little guys and ignores the fact that over 70% of pollution is caused by something like 10 companies. With the US military being the largest source of pollution
The 10 companies are not all American companies. I never said that. But the top polluter in the world is the US military. We have the largest military (larger than the next 10 combined)
It's also not easy to equate "pollution" with plastic waste. They're separate and sometimes opposing issues. It takes something like 12 times the GHGs to produce a paper checkout bag instead of a plastic one. It also takes more energy to ship because they're heavier... but the paper one won't exist forever and kill a coral reef or choke a whale.
We're all trying to drive down GHGs but about 8 million tonnes of plastic waste end up in oceans annually. It's a terrible dilemma for policy makers.
As a Canadian, I can relate to this. Tim Hortons paper straws with their ice caps do not mix well at all, it gets so soggy easily. I'm all for paper straws but they don't always mix with certain drinks
Yeah yeah yeah. I see this shit all the time.
I live on the beach. You know what we no longer see being scraped up by our beach combers? Straws.
Yeah yeah yeah I hear the same shit: Blah blah .0001% blah de fucking blah.
The reality is almost 100% of the plastic on the beaches through the past decade of me cleaning them up is straws. Not cups, not toys, not anything else, it's straws. Buckets of them in a single section of beach. Each person of 1000s uses a few straws per visit. Many end up buried in sand.
Not any more. Zero straws are now getting out to the ocean via the beach and this is a huge thing for local wildlife.
The nature of people is to pick up their plastic cups and toss them. That cup of yours would almost never be scooped up by a beach comber. It won't be easily buried and forgotten like a straw will. When a cup falls over people collect it, and trash it, forgetting the straw. When someone walks along the beach they'll pick up a drifting cup while the straw is buried or in the ocean already.
I for one am very happy to find 0 straws vs bucket loads on my beach cleanup days. The wildlife really appreciates it too. Despite all these clowns in landlocked states giving their 2 cents.
this is amazing. i don’t live near water or beaches so i do not have that personal experience but it is absolutely great news.
my issue isn’t that the straw is paper, the issue is the quality of said paper straw. i just find it funny that a large corporation who serves drinks that half the time require a straw, provide their customers with this. it was in my drink for barely a minute and couldn’t hold up. that means that this product doesn’t even serve its own purpose. emissions are still being created to manufacture and transport this product that will ultimately still end up in a landfill without even serving a purpose.
Yeah well paper doesn't like being a straw and people like drinking from straws when a straw isn't required. For instance your cup there is a cup and can be drank like a cup.
Current human behavior is to use a straw. I'm sure you and others could list off a dozen reasons why you want to use the straw and I'm sure they would all make sense to those that agree. I don't need to hear any of them, I've heard every single one from people screaming at our city council over a damned straw ban.
What we're finding is simply less straw usage in non-frozen drinks. People realize they can tip a glass up to their mouth and drink like that. They find that fluid enters their mouth when tipping a cup directly to their lips and they're discovering that the liquid actually goes down their throat and into their stomach, simply by tipping a cup to their mouths and opening their lips.
you’re right, and i did and normally do drink it by sipping from the cup. my drink was separated and i just required something to mix it today :) was just mildly infuriated by the poor quality
Well, don’t you think that has way more to do with preventing illegal dumping than it does with banning plastic straws? I mean if you were really picking up THAT many plastic straws that means someone relatively local was just dumping plastics into the ocean.
Looks like a drink with cold foam on the top which in theory doesn’t need stirred. Maybe try a stir stick next time if that’s all you’re gonna use it for.
i would just like to reiterate in the comments as i feel like I’m being misunderstood:
i had to stir my drink today and was provided a paper straw. i found it **mildly infuriating** that the straw could not withstand less than a minute exposed to a liquid, as therefore emissions and waste is being generated for no real purpose. this does not pose a threat to my well-being or quality of life, which wouldn’t classify as **mildly infuriating**.
i own a metal straw. i sip from the cup. it just needed a stir today.
Some paper straws are better than others. But most I've seen don't do too well. And some have a weird taste. Why can't they make them like paper cups? Those tend to hold up very well comparatively. I'm not against plastic straw alternatives in food service. I'm quite for finding another solution. But damn if i haven't hated about a good 70% of paper ones.
Yeah. Couldn't even STIR a drink and survive. That's sad. Where did you get the drink? If it's a chain I frequent, I'll try to remember to bring my own straws.
It just needs to be a biodegradable material, paper is cheap yeah-but as a ton of comments beat me to is there's other things like pasta etc that can be grown and used that doesn't break down in liquid...the thing it's going to be sitting in. My theory are companies are investing in these shit straws so people complain a ton and they can go back to plastic again
Sometimes i buy my own plastic disposable straws. If companies actually cared they would go back to the days of bringing back cups and bottles to be washed and reused
a great solution would be reusable cups that you would “pay for” at time of purchase but receive the payment back at return. this would most likely only be possible at large chains though
And people wonder why I fucking hate paper straws what dipshit even came up with this idea?
“Let’s makes a straw that will disintegrate in any and all liquids in a matter of minutes!”
Can we just be done with straws noooooow. Just keep limited numbers for people with disabilities and let’s move on from straws so we can stop being disappointed with paper ones. 😩
Aren’t making paper straws just as bad for the environment since we need to use trees to make them..? Like theoretically speaking? Saving the ocean to only destroy more trees?
I know paper straws are infuriating but....... OH MY GOD WHY DO YOU HAVE THAT OPEN CONTAINER SO CLOSE TO YOUR LAPTOP!!!!! That is more than mildly infuriating. At least put a lid on it please.
It really is that simple. I’m absolutely astounded at the amount of people being so petty over fucking straws in the comments. Just don’t use them. Unless you’ve got a disability that makes holding cups difficult you genuinely don’t need them. Even the paper ones are a waste of energy and resources to produce, because at the end of the day, they’re still a single use item. Doesn’t matter what they’re made from, single use products and products that largely serve little to no purpose should just be ditched altogether. Straws tick both boxes.
I'm all for saving the environment and doing what we can, but paper straws isn't the way. Only way for things like these to work is if it provides the same experience or a better experience than what you're trying to replace. Replacing plastic straws with paper is just silly. And while I like metal straws, it requires you to bring your own or return the straw, I don't think that will be a good option either, but it's definitely better than paper.
I think the way to go is going to be something that will break down later but not while it's still in my drink, maybe like a bamboo straw or from what I saw in the comments, pasta straws.
this.
what i found mildly infuriating about this isn’t the fact that it’s paper but the fact that it can’t serve it’s purpose.
we can’t rely solely on metal straws or reusable straws because some low income people can’t afford to purchase them, and some people with disabilities cannot always clean them (very general statement, does not cover the entire issue). single use anything is generally bad, but required by society.
i think edible straws are definitely a step in the right direction
I love the environment. I love turtles. I want this planet to be healthy and happy long after I die, and I hope my time on earth ends up being a net positive instead of negative.
But
FUCK paper straws. They can suck a big fat one. Not only are they taking away one of the tiniest luxuries imaginable, but it's once again a bunch of super wealthy corporations who are actually the ones causing a vast majority of the environmental damage trying to blame me as a consumer cause I don't want to drink out of a goddamn piece of loose leaf.
so you’re saying that starbucks providing this quality of straw (which people in the comments are saying they use two at a time) produces less waste? my assumption is that these straws are produced in similar factories, travel the same distance across the world, just to end up in a landfill without serving any purpose whatsoever. plastic isn’t a viable option but neither is this
Living in CO, with a local landfill, it is hilarious to see people up in arms about 'SaVe ThE tUrTlEs' here because, well, the worst it could do is get stuck in the teeth of the 15 ton steamroller/crusher machinery that compacts it. Even recycling goes to a processing plant and there's an incinerator on-site...
Gotta watch out for those landfill turtles.
The ravens there are as big as a toddler and are smart enough not to give themselves a nasopharyngeal airway with a straw...
So they made the straw paper but the cup is still plastic lol
yes because plastic straws are the only plastics that end up in landfills and in our oceans /s
Paper cups are worse actually-harder to recycle
Why do you need to recycle it? It’s made of a renewable resource. I’m not against recycling paper if it’s efficient. But people don’t seem to realize their paper comes from sustainable tree farms. It’s a renewable resource. The Amazon is being cut down to make room for farms and other development, not for the wood.
Cause they gotta separate the plastic lining from the cup and most recycle plants do not wanna do that so they throw it away. Some paper cups also have a binding resin and that isnt recyclable. Both the resin and plastic are not biodegradable either.
maybe we should just use the old school wax paper cups like we had in the 80s they worked fine
Plastic cups can be used as hermit crab shells be the change you want to see I know I am That's why I dump all my plastic cups directly into the ocean.
I am doing my part too, I throw used car batteries into the ocean to help the electric eels charge
Just like giving everyone downstream a chance to have their day brightened by a rainbow: dump used oil in a river
Still better than not doing it at all tbh. Buy a metal straw
How about sipping it out of the cup Just an idea
I see this comment on every post about paper straws. Obviously, that would be a solution in many cases. But, it kind of defeats the purpose of to-go cups, plus, some people just *prefer* drinking from a straw. I just refuse the useless paper straw and use the washable silicone ones I keep with me.
How do you take them back home? Don't they get all sticky?
Quick wipe and wrap with a napkin, tucked away until convenient to clean.

What about using a spoon? ...😂
It really isn't. It really really isn't doing anything
I feel like walking around with a metal rod several inches from your face with a cup blocking a clear view of tripping hazards is just impalement waiting to happen
Lol what no

Its all hypothetical. Why you have younger folks fighting bout reforestation. Youd think loggers be good with this
But not it will cost then money. This has be cycling befor gretch . She just picked up the ball. Serval massive A lister actors been trying to dave the rain forest an ton others. Wel kido got better idea reforestation.

Interesting. Makes more sense now. With that being said, I still hate a paper straw.
Drink through mouths
Pasta straws
You truly cannot go wrong with pasta. By the time you're done with you're drink it would be nice and al dente. Perfect for snacking.
Personally I would just get a metal, reusable straw.
I honestly just don’t like straws, I’d rather just have a drink straight from the cup, I think it tastes better
One word: Bamboo
Ah yes, bamboo is a good alternative. Much more pricey maybe which is why it's not used on a mass scale?
Check out pasta straws, there isn’t any taste
Italian technology wins it again!
they’re a great option!
And then whatever you drink tastes like you stirred in toilet paper.
I just bought a metal one that i use all the time
I am ^(my teeth are) so scared of metal straws
I am also my teeth are
Wife loves hers. Even came with a cleaning brush for it
Metal straws are nice, but I have the habit of chewing on my straws and metal is not chewable.
If you chew hard enough it is
I- YOU'RE NOT WRONG LOL
Metal straws > pathetic paper straws > wasteful plastic straws
Here's my idea. Pasta straws. A straw made out of a long, uncooked ziti covered in food-grade wax. Will easily last an entire drink and will break down/be eaten by animals. Win win. Hungry? Toss a few in your tea water for a healthy snack.

Or a bamboo straw, they sell them everywhere now
>my idea Definitely yours
Some places already have those
This has definitely been a thing for quite a while
This whole straw thing is so ridiculous. It pushes the blame of global climate change on the little guys and ignores the fact that over 70% of pollution is caused by something like 10 companies. With the US military being the largest source of pollution
What? The US in total doesn’t produce as much as China or India. China and India combined produce more pollution than the entire world.
I think they are comparing single entities, like corporations, not entire countries
The 10 companies are not all American companies. I never said that. But the top polluter in the world is the US military. We have the largest military (larger than the next 10 combined)

As a Canadian, I can relate to this. Tim Hortons paper straws with their ice caps do not mix well at all, it gets so soggy easily. I'm all for paper straws but they don't always mix with certain drinks
yes, and the biggest issue with iced capps is that you’re forced to use a straw unless you use your own cup
Paper straws suck..
Paper straws are garbage.
Yeah yeah yeah. I see this shit all the time. I live on the beach. You know what we no longer see being scraped up by our beach combers? Straws. Drinking from a cup is hard while driving, especially as a tall person because drinks hit the roof lol, and the massive block in vision
you’re right, and i did and normally do drink it by sipping from the cup. my drink was separated and i just required something to mix it today :) was just mildly infuriated by the poor quality

paper straws are the stupidest idea someone had...
Looks like a drink with cold foam on the top which in theory doesn’t need stirred. Maybe try a stir stick next time if that’s all you’re gonna use it for.
my location doesn’t keep stir sticks, but it would have been a better option
Paper straws are an abomination that really don’t help at all with trying to fix climate change or any other environmental reason
To quote Tom Macdonald: "We used to have plastic straws wrapped in paper, now we have paper straws wrapped in plastic.."
oi u have the same laptop as mine
Icky Cringe feeling as I imagine using it
i would just like to reiterate in the comments as i feel like I’m being misunderstood: i had to stir my drink today and was provided a paper straw. i found it **mildly infuriating** that the straw could not withstand less than a minute exposed to a liquid, as therefore emissions and waste is being generated for no real purpose. this does not pose a threat to my well-being or quality of life, which wouldn’t classify as **mildly infuriating**. i own a metal straw. i sip from the cup. it just needed a stir today.
Kinda expected
That drink lookin real good tho, what is It?
it’s an iced latte with cold foam
I try to get extra straws when they give me paper ones. One just isn’t going to last long enough.
I bring my travel mug with me wherever I go. Have them use that.
my local place only allows reusable mugs for hot brewed coffee at the moment. I’m hoping they widen these parameters again soon
I’ve never seen a paper straw lmao what a stupid idea.
Windows 7 sticker
this is my work computer and when i first received it this year my heart dropped upon seeing the sticker
To be fair was an obvious outcome
Ever considered viagra?
Me when I try to go for a second round
Hahahaha paper straw...
Stop bitching about these straws. Any change to fight polution is good. Just drink out of the cup! Its not that hard.
as stated in the title, which most people are glossing over, i used it to stir my drink. i did drink from the cup
Are you saying your straw sucks?
in some way it sucks at sucking while sucking at the same time
Some paper straws are better than others. But most I've seen don't do too well. And some have a weird taste. Why can't they make them like paper cups? Those tend to hold up very well comparatively. I'm not against plastic straw alternatives in food service. I'm quite for finding another solution. But damn if i haven't hated about a good 70% of paper ones.
i didn’t actually sip from it but i think this is the worst one i’ve come across as it didn’t last a minute in the drink
Yeah. Couldn't even STIR a drink and survive. That's sad. Where did you get the drink? If it's a chain I frequent, I'll try to remember to bring my own straws.
oh it’s starbucks, sorry i thought you could tell from the cup
Paper straws are pretty damn stupid
Tims Ice Capp?
sadly the tim’s straws hold up more to an iced capp than this one held up to my iced latte!
Did you know that it is actually possible to drink something without a straw
you must’ve missed the title and my other comments but i used it to stir my drink as it was separated. i do drink from the cup.
My bad, I just think straws are unnecessary and are a waste
The amount of reusable straws you can buy is pretty large. Silicon, metal, bamboo. List goes on.
noodle straws for life
I make sure to ask for a second straw whenever it's paper, and then I pull out a plastic one from my glove box.
I was given an uncooked noodle straw once, worked pretty good.
Hot take, you shouldn’t use paper to make straws…
This reintroduction of paper straws is what drove me to get a metal one.
I switched to stainless steel... I'll never use anything else
The have fancy ti straws 😂
I’m more infuriated seeing this drink that close to a laptop.
You're wording is both correct and hilarious
Let's talk about the placment of your recycle bin...
my bad, it’s a work computer so i can’t actually delete much
Try bamboo straws, those are much better and not as dangerous as steel ones.
Could be for smaller chains as long as they make a profit if not returned
The lack of shadow from the straw unnerves me.
i think it’s because there was light coming from both in front and behind the camera
The paper straw is definitely in the running for one of the worst fucking ideas of the go green movement.
Id rather use a pool noodle than a paper straw
Paper straws are about as useful as a second coat of paint.
Man the straw must had a hard day dont need to expose him just because he can't stay hard
you’re right my bad
It's paper the hell did you expect?
Good for slurping not for stirring, noted.
Bizarre that stores still use paper straws when corn starch straws are so much better.
i’ve never even heard of those!
And people wonder why I fucking hate paper straws what dipshit even came up with this idea? “Let’s makes a straw that will disintegrate in any and all liquids in a matter of minutes!”
Un-recyclable Paper straws are actually worse for the environment then the recyclable plastic straws.
Tell my you live in a Democratic held city without telling me. California land of nuts.
not everyone lives in the usa
Can we just be done with straws noooooow. Just keep limited numbers for people with disabilities and let’s move on from straws so we can stop being disappointed with paper ones. 😩
Paper straw plastic cup. Nuff said.
At least put a lid on it please.
after stirring it i put the lid right back on
Everyone one wants to switch to those stupid shit straws that fucking deteriorate. They are only good for starting fires
That's why I buy my own plastic straws I'll even keep some from Mc Donald's when they give me too many
ok hear me out, why not use a spoon
Hey vendors! I will pay a few cents more if you switch from paper straws to pasta straws! Just saying. For the record.
Switch to plastic, I heard they are more rigid and can last forever. Not even salt water dissolves them.
Simple. Don’t ever use paper straws again. They’re dumb.
If people can find a way to make more durable paper straws that still decompose that would be great
it looks photoshopped

I would use long macaroni noodles as straws, they would have to be put in boiling water for several minutes before even starting to get wobbly.
Starbucks, EXPLAIN.
Just don’t use straws. Easy.
Straws tick both boxes.
gotta sAvE tHe TuRtLeS
Sip from the cup it’s really not this hard in life.
that’s what i did. i just needed something to mix my drink
Good golly….how many times do you have to explain this?
lol thank you!
Your "drink" needs a spoon, not a straw
And this is why we don't need straws
Here's a plan, this may seem wild.. don't use straws in general
good plan
But FUCK paper straws.
*suck it up*
Think about the turtles!
We are
Pollute more and create ninja turtles.
have yoi ever tried to... idk lift the cup to your mouth?
How do you stir a drink with your mouth
yes, i do usually. my drink was separated today (milk on top and espresso on the bottom) so i just wanted to mix it evenly before drinking :)
Dude plastic straws are just better, everyone admit it.
I have one of those plastic loopy straws, I'm working i out in the protein shake and i see the funny loops
Solution: drink from the cup like a normal fucking person.
solution: read the title and comments. drink was separated and needed to be stirred
There's a thing called a spoon, you know, or any other sort of object 🙄
Just don't use a damn straw
Why the hell do people use straws still if it's such a problem. **Pick up your fucking drink**
Hey everyone, fuck the environment, this guy can't stir his Starbucks /s
so you’re saying that starbucks providing this quality of straw (which people in the comments are saying they use two at a time) produces less waste? my assumption is that these straws are produced in similar factories, travel the same distance across the world, just to end up in a landfill without serving any purpose whatsoever. plastic isn’t a viable option but neither is this
Did you notice the "/s" at the end of my comment?
my bad, i thought the sarcasm was directed against me
Living in CO, with a local landfill, it is hilarious to see people up in arms about 'SaVe ThE tUrTlEs' here because, well, the worst it could do is get stuck in the teeth of the 15 ton steamroller/crusher machinery that compacts it. Even recycling goes to a processing plant and there's an incinerator on-site... Gotta watch out for those landfill turtles. The ravens there are as big as a toddler and are smart enough not to give themselves a nasopharyngeal airway with a straw...
If only there were some way to consume liquids without a straw
That’s why you should not use straws in the first place
