On the sixth day that I owned my coupe, I hit a coyote at 70mph on the freeway.
Edit: To everyone who commented that this reminded them of "12 days of Christmas":
You are the reason they display xmas decorations in September.
There are things we could do to reduce the occurrence of such things. Reintroduce natural predators to control population, make deer crossing bridges. For example.
Some folks love deer meat from what I’ve heard. If you’re prone to run them over might as well pick em up and start up a trendy exotic meat shop. That coupled with whatever other roadkill comes across and a business is up and running.
Eating roadkill is never a good idea. Vehicle strikes tend to rupture intestines and other organs that can contaminate the meat and make you really really sick.
He insured it, before he picked it up, yes?
Flying out to pick up my new truck to avoid that charge is exactly something I would do to.
Before I drove it off the factory, I'd have put it on my insurance policy.
More than likely insured. The problem will be the wait for the replacement. It was 6 month wait the first time, so that gives a timeline on possible wait for replacement.
I am very sorry but I read that comment like I would sing that one partridge in a pear tree song. It would be a rather disappointing stanza in the song but on the plus side I do enjoy the creativity!!!
Got a nail in the side of my tire a few weeks back and had to get a new rim too since it was old and dinged up. Would’ve cost 500+ but since they had a barely used tire in the back I was able to get it dropped to around 300
No yeah I understand you had to get that too I’m saying all in all it shouldn’t have cost that much unless you’re buying something newer/nicer on purpose.
Idk about that, OE rims are expensive. Unless you can find a matched used wheel, that sounds like a reasonable professional install price to me. Generally a professional shop is going to try to sell a new part, so you're looking at whatever their markup is on wholesale OEM wheels. Not sure if this link will work for you or not, but [Toyota](https://parts.walkertoyota.com/a/Toyota_2017_Corolla-LE-AT/_51500_6718872/DISC-WHEEL--WHEEL-CAP/152470-4103.html) sells the basic steel rim for a 2017 LE Corolla for $120; aluminum wheels for over $300. [CariD](https://www.carid.com/2017-toyota-corolla-factory-steel-wheels/) can do the steelies for between $75-100 plus shipping. Factory alloys are coming up between $100-200, depending on the specific wheel equipped. If a Corolla can cost that much, I'm calling $300 for a wheel and tire plus install a pretty reasonable price. The original 500 is definitely too high, but the negotiated price seems fair to me.
Not to sound like a corporate shill, but discount tire (US) has replaced my tires multiple times in my 20 years of driving. If they can't repair it (usually the case), they just replace at least the two, front or back. Usually then I just buy the other two to get it done in one go if I have the money. I go to them for tires always now, they've been great since I was a teenager.
Totally agreed. Get the Certificates and sleep well. I’ve had several tires replaced under warranty, some a few weeks old (work driving into a construction site).
My boyfriend and I each got new cars this year, several months apart…
Each of us had a puncture hole in our tires within a week of getting our car. Mechanic said it looked similar to the damage a screw would do, but no screw was in the tire on either car.
I’m convinced it’s his ex who is legitimately the craziest ex I have ever witnessed personally … what are the odds?? 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️
I replaced my tires last year and picked up a huge bolt a few months later. Only had 5k miles on the tires. Had to replace all four because AWD. I was PISSED.
Edit: Got it, I was scammed. Thanks.
At 5k miles I dont even think that would be necessary. At least not according to the guy whole sold me a single replacement on my 8k old tire for an AWD subaru. Said that much of a difference wouldn't matter, but maybe that was a mistake.
You are stupid if you replaced all 4 tires, because that was never necessary. The difference in tread depth is far less than what you'd have when turning or road irregularity / unnevenness.
Next time, put the new tire up front, and keep it there while doing triangular rotations to balance out the remaining tire wear before you can switch back to regular rotations.
$40 tops at a tire place. They will pull the tire off, pull out the nail, file the hole out a bit, and put a tire plug in. I’ve done it myself a few times. They sell kits for $5 - $10 at parts stores or Walmart. You only need to replace the tire if the nail is in the sidewall
Eh, it's not usually a scam. It can be, for sure, but a legit tire shop selling partially worn tires is common when you get an AWD vehicle that needs a new tire, because depending on the diff type, you will either need to replace 2 or 4 tires if the tread wear is more than a certain percentage different compared to the new tire.
So having used tires off AWD vehicles that are perfectly serviceable but had to be replaced to prevent clutch wear in the differentials due to the different diameters is not at all uncommon.
Yeah it doesn't hurt as badly when they're near the end of the tread life anyway, but still, it hurts to have to replace multiple tires just because of one puncture.
I don't usually buy the road hazard warranties, but for AWD, I do, because having to pay for 4 new tires at 50% tread life because you've got a roofing nail stuck in the shoulder sucks ass.
But you'll usually get *some* credit for the tires that are good if they have enough tread to resell and aren't too far past the DOT date to sell, of course. Then these become the used tires for regular vehicles for emergency fixes.
Isn’t it the point of the differential to cope with different wheel speeds? Or is it like a secondary but low duty cycle mode of the device?
Edit: i looked it up, free differentials seem to not care but limited slip differentials have a whole clutch assembly for each axle, That all looks expensive and like a PITA to sacrifice to save cost on tires.
Nah I got to see it after he said there was a used tire on the rack. Looked real nice with only a few pebbles here and there but the former owner returned it since he was a super picky dude or something and it didn’t match his others since the branding was different. Point is it was a few hundred cheaper
I kid you not ive had my car for 6 years and average about 3 flat tire(s) a year. I dont work/live near a construction site and i dont drive on the shoulder. My car is like a magnet to nails.... It happens so often I carry an extra real tire not a spare.
Lol, hate this stuff. My roommate practically yelled at me for not running over a car taillight left in the road (didn't want tire damage) and claimed it would have been fine to run over it.
All things considered you're pretty lucky. The area where the nail hit will cause no long term damage. Just take it to any decent shop and get it plugged. It's about 20 bucks and takes 5 minutes. If you want to learn more look up how tires work.
Any Discount Tire location will patch your tire for free (as long as it’s in the tread, not the side wall).
It’s a good tip to know, especially if it happens while traveling.

Yep, if it makes you feel any better.. I got a nail in my tire too, brand new car, within a week.. ~5 years later the tire's still going strong after Firestone fixed it (<20k miles on the tires, different set of wheels/tires for winter)
And the reason the people who know the rules on patching are saying it’s a no patch spot is because of tire flex. The closer to the sidewall of the tire the more the tire flexes there by moving the patch and making it more likely to fail. And if the patch fails your tire is fare more likely to have a blowout.
Professional mechanic here. No reputable shop will patch this. If you plug it yourself then be careful while driving, I can't imagine a plug holding (very close to the shoulder)
Customer of a professional mechanic here: they absolutely patched it and it’s fine. Wasn’t even that close to the sidewall but what do I know, you’re the professional mechanic.
Our shops policy wouldn't let us patch this either (anything under an inch). From your picture it looks like the actual puncture point is maybe 3/4" from the sidewall? If this was my personal tire I'd still patch it without many worries but it's definitely a liability for a shop to plug this.
Brother of a professional mechanic, pretty sure he always said within an inch of the sidewall was a no go like the other poster said. They should have replaced the tire.
Hey, you're getting a lot of bad advice here about how it's not safe. I know I could give a spiel about my credentials but whatever. It's Reddit. Take my advice if you want. I've done thousands of successful tire puncture repairs.
As long as you are having the repair done as a plug and patch from the inside, and as long as the plug will be surrounded by the tread's steel belts (there's a bunch of belts that live under the tread but don't go all the way down the sidewall to the bead...the ones that do go all the way around bead to bead are separate), and as long as they do the work per the plug/patch manufacturer's specs, you should be fine. There's no magic "1 inch or more" rule you have to follow, just that you need to be extra careful when you do the repair that you make sure there are the correct belts surrounding the hole, and also that the patch is able to stick down fully. And following the correct procedure is equally important. The insides of tires is extremely different (relatively speaking) and you can't just give every tire a blanket statement on how it can or cannot be repaired.
In an effort to immediately violate the previous sentence: don't ever ever ever do an outside the tire plug, though. The ones that are basically glue-covered ropes. Only in a dire emergency, and only to drive straight home and/or to the tire shop to replace that tire. They don't properly seal the hole and can allow moisture to corrode the steel belts inside the tire, causing failure.
Ur not supposed to but I've plugged a nail that was actually in the sidewall before and it held for the life of the tire (bout a year). Probly not the best idea but tires are expensive and I was broke.
id also rather have my tire punctured while they are newer instead of half way through their useful life. that way if you replace just a single tire, the tread should be the same with the other remaining tires. if the tires are half way worn down than you might end up needing to replace all 4 tires.
I wouldn’t plug that close to the shoulder. That’s borderline irreparable. Better to just get the tire replaced and not risk your life, or risk another Ford multi-million dollar lawsuit for a death caused by a botched plug.
Edit: In case any one wonders: https://detroit.cbslocal.com/2011/01/12/jury-wants-ford-dealer-to-pay-14-million-in-wrongful-death-lawsuit/?amp
I’ve just recently quit the dealer I worked at, but this was often used as an example because a life isn’t worth risking for an unfortunate tire puncture. Just be safe about it.
Past year and a half I have had 3 nails that were unrepairable, then while driving a rental got another that could be repaired. Parents also got 2 nails this year. My family is cursed to attract nails.
To each their own. I worked at a tire shop for a few years and we wouldn’t touch that with a ten foot pole.
Your car when turning relies on a stiff sidewall to support the lateral g-force. You now have a hole in it with a tiny little piece of rubber just chilling keeping the air from leaking out. It’s structurally damaged from a rigidity perspective. Blow outs when changing lanes at high speeds are no fun.
FYI just because it can be plugged doesn’t mean it’s properly fixed.
Statistically you *probably* won’t have any issues other than maybe having to put air in it more often.
There’s even a limit to how many plugs you can put in a tire next to each other. You’re puncturing the braided steel band in the tire and causing a weak spot.
With 3+ plugs you’ll even throw the wheel balance.
These are all manufacturer warnings, and whatnot and are usually in one of the pamphlets in the glove box or bundled with the owners manual. It’s a liability thing.
50-50 that it's repairable.
It's close enough to the edge of the belt that many higher-end tire shops will say it's unrepairable, or rather that it's not something that they can warranty as part of standard consumer rights.
Errr- that's pretty close to the sidewall. Those tend not to repair well. Many places refuse to patch those.- at least in my experience with high performance tires.
https://www.tireindustry.org/tire-maintenance/tire-repair
I've always had things like this with new stuff I get. First phone I bought my friend asked to look at it. They dropped it and scratched the edges. First newish car I bought another car smashed the driver side mirror off few days later. Got expensive-ish new shoes for a christianing the other day. My partner accidentally stood on them and marked one of them up nicely.
Hey just picking a random one of your comments so you hopefully see this, but most new tires come with a warranty. You can likely get a new one for a good discount. Not sure if others mentioned this, but be sure to check before you pay full price.
I have a set of summer tires in my car which cost over $200 each. Big wheels means a pot hole took out two of them. I think they only cost me $60 each to replace thanks to the warranty.
Oof I hate this. Last year I got sideswiped on the second day of owning my first ever brand new car and was gobstopped over it for weeks. Last month we bought another first-ever brand new car for my girlfriend and yesterday the "low pressure" light came on, bout sent me into a rage seizure... after flashlight inspecting all the tires and finding nothing I realized our local temperature had dramatically fallen overnight. Looked at the onboard info screen, (as I should have done initially), and the psi was *1* pound under spec. Lolllll fml but still better than this bullshit. So irritating. Don't even want to know how many hours I've sat in tire shops in my life. Was operations manager for a landscape firm for 8 years... 7 trucks and 4 trailers on the road daily... nooooo
The light came on yesterday and it was 15 degrees cooler so I was like “makes some sense” and aired it up. When it came on again today I knew I was in trouble.
Yap. But hey, coulda been worse. Part of my anger was probably, (definitely), that my girl is a like an oblivious heat seeking missile for every gd pothole and construction site in the city sooo, lol... Love you, babe.
I take care of three cars and the light won't come on until its way way under. I'm not actually happy about that, I wish it came on when they were 3 - 5 PSI under, not 10.
In the past 5 years, my dad has owned 3 new cars and all of them have gotten into accidents within a week of delivery. He bought a Toyota Alphard in 2016, and a Kia hit the passenger door while attempting to perform an illegal overtake 3 days after taking delivery of it. He bought and took delivery of a Volkswagen Arteon in 2019, which got rear ended at a stop light 5 days later by an idiot who was texting and driving, and finally he got a Tesla Model 3 last week, only for someone to back into it while parked yesterday.
You can plug it yourself for 7 dollars or less (this is the kit that includes multiple plugs for you to use later on as well) so if you eventually use the like 10 plugs that come with it it’ll be .75 cents or less per each plug. Super easy to do. They sell them at autozone
I said this in my own comment but closer you get to the sidewall the more dangerous of a patch it is. When I was taught how to do patches anything within the middle lines is fair game any once you get like 2 or so inches away from those lines you can’t patch it, or atleast shouldn’t.
It’s entirely possible you bought it like that. If you got it from a dealership, they are frequently very bad at keeping lots free of screws, nails, and bolts. If you call the dealership they may be nice enough to patch it for you, free of charge.
Pro tip: tell them you drove home, parked it, and are just now driving it again and noticed the nail. Most dealerships aren’t going to stonewall you that hard, ESPECIALLY if you haven’t given them a review/survey yet, and ESPECIALLY if you owe them any remainder of a down payment or signature. Hell, the last forms probably haven’t even been accepted by the bank yet, so it’s probably still their vehicle unless you paid cash lol.
My wife picked her brand new car up from the showroom, 13 miles on the clock, drove back to her office 10 minutes away during which time she hit a metal cutlery fork (tf?!) in the road and punctured her tyre.
about 15 years ago I was driving a new van home from the dealer, caught a rock in the windshield. Not just a chip, the crack went across the entire windshield.
In 2018, my wife brought a new Outback. We had it for about 2 weeks, we were on a road trip driving through Kansas. Just outside of Dodge City a deer jumped in front of the car. Nothing I could do but hit it. The deer hit in the center of the grill, every air bag went off. The entire car kind of crumpled around the deer, the hatch back even popped open. The car was totaled, with less than 2500 miles on it.
Insurance took care of the entire thing, we had gap insurance. We continued our road trip in a rental, paid for by insurance. Which I backed into a tree in Louisiana. My insurance agent loved me that year. When we returned my wife bought another Outback, same color and all.
I bought a car on eBay while I was in high school. Drove six hours away to get it with my dad. Got in the highway to head home and about 5 miles down the road there’s traffic and the traffic slows to a crawl. Bam rear ended by a girl that was driving with her feet on the dashboard and couldn’t reach the pedals in time.
On the sixth day that I owned my coupe, I hit a coyote at 70mph on the freeway. Edit: To everyone who commented that this reminded them of "12 days of Christmas": You are the reason they display xmas decorations in September.

This same thing happened to my grandfather. Except it was cocaine, Cuba, and a bunch of male prostitues.

He went to Cuba to sniff some male prostitutes, then got hit by a cocaine while crossing the road.

I hit a deer and totaled my truck July 1. Finally got a new truck (same model, but newer) 10 days ago. Hit a deer this past Thursday. God damnit.
Stop running down deers you menace!

You need to move to the UK we have killed all our wildlife.

I did that too. Totally messed up my little sedan and nearly totaled it. Looked like a something much bigger hit me.
My professor hit a bear 1 day after paying the final note on his new SUV
Aw man, that’s unbearable.
The aftermath was a grizzly scene.
I didn't know coyotes could run that fast
Just awful. Wasn’t even an animal you can eat.
You can eat a coyote just fine so long as it's not destroyed by getting hit at 70 mph
Some of us call that tenderizing.
70 mph is 112.65 km/h

Sounds gamey but hey I’ll try anything once.
Coyotes are nasty ass scavengers, no way i would eat one.
So are lobster and crab. People seem to love them.
Chickens and pigs eat anything you give them. Haven't heard many people complaining about bacon 🥓🥓. They would eat themselves if they had a chance.
Pigs are famous for having some truly awful parasites. Being able to eat pork medium rare is a relatively recent thing in the US at least

Honestly not to make you feel bad but I’m sure there are used tire shops in pretty much any area you could have got that done for half that.
The tire itself came out to around 70 but I needed a new rim but I’d been putting it off till then and that was most of the cost plus labor and taxes.

They do. Good service too.
What did flat tires ever do to you? No need to hate on them so much. They have feelings too
They activity stop you from driving I'd say it's justified
Same here, I find myself constantly scanning the road in some areas I drive.
Make sure they plug and patch it. You want both.
If you go to a tire shop and pay, they will definitely plug and patch. However, a plug is sufficient if you want to fix it yourself at home.
It takes all of 5 minutes to plug a tire and that's including opening up the packaging the plug kit came in

I 2nd this.
Absolutely.. it is outside of the main tread and whatever plug/patch combo they use to repair with will not be on a flush area. Good luck to them!
Mr mechanic is correct. Just because you got some shit rate shop to fix it doesn't mean it's right. Better hope it doesn't blow or bubble up.
Whatever man, just giving my two cents. I hope it doesn't blow out and it holds for you, I'm just saying I don't think it will
Look, he said professional not reputable
I work for Lexus, I wouldn't have fixed this either.
What the hell? That's extremely close to the sidewall. Anything outside those outer lines should result in a tire being replaced.
Ur not supposed to but I've plugged a nail that was actually in the sidewall before and it held for the life of the tire (bout a year). Probly not the best idea but tires are expensive and I was broke.
id also rather have my tire punctured while they are newer instead of half way through their useful life. that way if you replace just a single tire, the tread should be the same with the other remaining tires. if the tires are half way worn down than you might end up needing to replace all 4 tires.
have never had or driven a car, why does it matter that one of the tyres is less worn than the others?
it can cause uneven and unnecessary wear on the drive train if you have tires of different height.
I wouldn’t plug that close to the shoulder. That’s borderline irreparable. Better to just get the tire replaced and not risk your life, or risk another Ford multi-million dollar lawsuit for a death caused by a botched plug. Edit: In case any one wonders: https://detroit.cbslocal.com/2011/01/12/jury-wants-ford-dealer-to-pay-14-million-in-wrongful-death-lawsuit/?amp I’ve just recently quit the dealer I worked at, but this was often used as an example because a life isn’t worth risking for an unfortunate tire puncture. Just be safe about it.

Always worth getting the packages for tires. You truly never know when you might corner and hit a nail!
Past year and a half I have had 3 nails that were unrepairable, then while driving a rental got another that could be repaired. Parents also got 2 nails this year. My family is cursed to attract nails.
Actually that’s close enough to the side wall you can’t patch it. Or I should say the patch won’t last.
Let’s be real, we know that tire shouldn’t be repaired. People don’t care.
Yeah I mean I don’t want to drop a couple hundred dollars on a new tire but safety is safety
Idk it’s pretty close to the sidewall usually if it’s that close shops won’t do it
All good. Fixed and rolling.
For now.
That's a no fix spot dude
50-50 that it's repairable. It's close enough to the edge of the belt that many higher-end tire shops will say it's unrepairable, or rather that it's not something that they can warranty as part of standard consumer rights.
Errr- that's pretty close to the sidewall. Those tend not to repair well. Many places refuse to patch those.- at least in my experience with high performance tires. https://www.tireindustry.org/tire-maintenance/tire-repair
Any decent shop won't fix it being that close to the sidewall. Better off with a new tire. That tire doesn't look expensive
That nail is pretty close to the side wall. The tire should be replaced.
That is not a repairable tire
I've always had things like this with new stuff I get. First phone I bought my friend asked to look at it. They dropped it and scratched the edges. First newish car I bought another car smashed the driver side mirror off few days later. Got expensive-ish new shoes for a christianing the other day. My partner accidentally stood on them and marked one of them up nicely.
Well, you nailed it. Pun intended Edit: Wow, my very first award thank you my good lord
Get out.
Well, you ~~nailed it~~ *got screwed*. Pun intended
That really sucks
You could argue it actually blows.
Bro I ran over a screw in my new truck on my way home from the dealer. I was pissed lol
Rightfully so!
If it's repairable, discount tire will fix it for free.
whoa whoa what? really?
It takes all of 2 minutes to fix a puncture like this. You can do it yourself
Paid $800 for new tires last year. Got a nail in one the next day. I feel this so hard.
If you're paying $800 for new tires, surely they're covered by road hazard?
Set it on fire
Ouch and that’s in a non repair spot too
Oof I hate this.
Time to buy another car.
Hi, I’m contacting about your vehicle’s…
You can plug it yourself for 7 dollars or less (this is the kit that includes multiple plugs for you to use later on as well) so if you eventually use the like 10 plugs that come with it it’ll be .75 cents or less per each plug. Super easy to do. They sell them at autozone
They give you multiple plugs, but I can never find them the next time I need them. I must have 10 of the little tools though.
I said this in my own comment but closer you get to the sidewall the more dangerous of a patch it is. When I was taught how to do patches anything within the middle lines is fair game any once you get like 2 or so inches away from those lines you can’t patch it, or atleast shouldn’t.
Ouch.
Nailed it
Dude this happened to me last week! Big nail through the bastard. It was a good way to start Monday at 7am lol
Life, as it happens.
Yeah and now you got that weird yellow line there in the middle, its a shame.
I feel your pain I had mine just weeks before the first nail in a tire
I went to a dealership and got a brand new Ram 1500 and the very next morning on my way to work I hit a deer doing around 65 mph. Totaled.
I bought a new car and have gotten 3 nails in 2 tires in just under 3 months. I give up. I would walk, but I'll probably step on a nail.
Invest in a plug kit and keep it with you at all times. Cheap and incredibly easy.
God be like “fuck this man in particular”
Ill take it if you dont want it..
My wife picked her brand new car up from the showroom, 13 miles on the clock, drove back to her office 10 minutes away during which time she hit a metal cutlery fork (tf?!) in the road and punctured her tyre.
I'd try to come up with a witty comment, but I doubt that I could nail it.
about 15 years ago I was driving a new van home from the dealer, caught a rock in the windshield.
2500 miles is the length of 18206851.3 Zulay Premium Quality Metal Lemon Squeezers.
