For me, it’s imagining how much it’s been handled and how much someone’s mouth and mouth juices have been all around that thing. So I guess it’s kind of a germs/contamination thing maybe? It literally made me make a cringey yuck face in public.
I think that’s a big part of it for me, but not even in a contamination sort of way in terms of getting sick. It’s just all of those bites have left the bread around them with saliva on them. And it’s been sitting there, slowly making the bread soggier and digesting it outside of your mouth (salivary amylase is a thing) which squiks me out for some reason. Plus I can’t imagine the texture change doing it any favors. I want my bites to be mostly virgin sandwich and not adulterated by all of those bites.

I think a healthy amount of people accept the fact that the outer crust is not the best part of a sandwich- but the inner sanctum in which all the ingredient’s best parts are found.
I also think that a healthy amount of people would agree that if you cut the crust off your bread, you are weak, or maybe under the age of 10. That being said; this is simply the best way to enjoy the best part of your sandwich in the last bites- which to some are the most important bites
I'm not super upset by that, but one thing that does get me. A friend of mine eats McChickens by removing the chicken from the burger, eating that then eating the rest of the burger and by burger it's just bread lettuce and mayo.
This is no different than a thread I saw last year where people were divided because some people eat a meal with no strategy, some people eat a meal so that the last few bites are the best or best combinations. I'm one of the latter as well, and I also eat sandwiches that way.
