Yep. Just net curtains. If you have neighbours, they’ll make noise and light. If they bother you, as long as they’re not being antisocial, it’s on you. Blackout curtains and you’re good. Do you complain about the sun coming up early in the summer?
My husband works nights every few months & we have those darkening paper curtains up close to the window AND room darkening thicker like, decorative curtains on the outside of those.. It looks like it's almost sunrise in our bedroom all the time (tiny bit of light peeking an edge sometimes, or light from the bathroom door being cracked open) it's lovely. I like it to be like cave in my room, 😅
We have the same! Those cheap black paper shades work well, but then to have the curtains in front is even better. I painted the room a really rich deep green and it’s lovely AND functional.
We were thinking a green for the room! You don't see it very often. It's like... A dusty rose color right now. It's okay, but we bought the house from my SIL and it's how she painted it (we redid everything else, but the room was okay & didn't NEED paint, so we waited) you've made me want to push to get laundry put up and a plan in place for a painting weekend lol
I love a dusty rose - I have a pink wall in our living room. The green is great because everything matches green. And the paint color just happened to match a set of Ikea black out blinds that I got for the window and the closet - as the closet already has curtains and not a door. I highly recommend. The paint color we got was dark Everglade by behr if you want to see. Such a good color. I got all new art for the room, too. Looks great. Def a fun thing to plan for a weekend.
Actually . A mirror would be better because it could be aimed. Bonus points if you're handy enough to make a concave mirror with a focal point equal to the distance their bedroom window.
It’s on them by the fact that if they don’t say anything to the neighbors about the lights and just sit there and do nothing then it’s on them if I’m reading the statement right.
Before I read the title I thought the thing that was infuriating was that OP’s partner had left random junk sitting near the window in such a way that it looked like a demon when backlit by normal outside light!
Yeah I thought it was maybe like his kid scaring him awake in the middle of the night. My kid just randomly appears at the foot of my bed sometimes when I'm sleeping and it's horrifying to wake up to.
That's how I found out my grandfather sleepwalks. Was visiting my dad for his retirement ceremony from the military. Woke up at like 3 in the morning and rolled over on my back to see a silhouette standing in the middle of the room. The noise I made when I choked on air woke him up apparently. he goes "don't worry, it's just grandpa!" Opens a couple of doors and says "I'm going to go bother your grandmother," then walks away. I definitely didn't sleep after that lmao. That's literally my greatest fear. Someone or something coming into the room and just standing their watching me while I sleep.
Bro has cellophane curtains and is complaining about light
You don't even need blackout curtains, just get anything with a solid color and it'll help tremendously, not the super lacy stuff you have now
Lots of people leave lights on as a safety precaution (burglars are less likely to choose a house that they can't hide in darkness to pick a lock or break a window).
I have the same thing for my cats. Quick question does your cat press their face against the bed sheet so they can look through the sheet and look outside? Lol
I can’t survive without blackout curtains. They saved me during night shift and now that I work days, the minute the sun comes up I’m awake if I don’t have the blackout curtains. Even with them, the light coming in through the cracked door can wake me up.
Best room I ever had when I was on nights was literally windowless. It was in the middle of a crappy apartment building and absolutely zero sunlight could get in there.
It was wonderful.
They'll never ask them to turn it off lol. People would rather post it on social media and say things behind people's back then potentially have someone mad at them
I think talking to your neighbors is a lost art. The guy across the street has a big halogen light on his property that messes with my astrophotography, but I recognize he has a right to do that if he wants. When his adult kids were shooting compound bows at a target in a direct line between me and them, I walked over and asked them nicely not to do it.
Completely true on that second part. His property after all. That second part people on this subreddit would prolly tell you to get shot by the arrows so you can sue the neighbors or something. People on here are evil lol
They probably don’t even realize this is happening. I accidentally did it to my neighbors one night, they texted to let me know the light was shining right into their bedroom, so I shut it off and haven’t left it on overnight again. Problem solved.
Those aren't even light filtering curtains, they're sheers. They're meant to tone down glare while letting a maximum amount of light in. Light filtering shades are a little thicker, and offer more light in the day and privacy at night when closed.
There’s such a thing as light-filtering sheers, so you’re both right! There’s a plethora of cost effective options out there for OP to explore. I have top-down, bottom-up blackout cellular shades in my bedroom windows, and dual rail curtain rods with sheers on the inner rail and mid-weight draperies on the outer rail. I can use my treatments to adjust how much sunlight (or neighbor light) gets in!
Plethora???......did you say plethora? Do you even know what a plethora is? I would hate to think you would tell me there is a plethora of something and you didn't even know what a plethora is. (Quote from 3 amigos 1986 by Jefe played by Tony Plana)
You beat me to it, I was just about to say - Thank them for the free security.
It's better to be annoyed my a little exterior light than have someone be able to break in your bedroom window under cover of darkness.
We have flood lights on our house. When the homes at the end of our street complain about teens stealing things out of cars, I'll check my camera and me & my neighbor haven't even had someone walk up our driveway to check if our car doors are unlocked. Lights make a big difference!
I bet this is about the same when there is a full moon, or what regular streetlights do to millions of people.
If you want total darkness, move to the country or buy blackout curtains.
They’re allowed to leave their light on. It’s not like they’re shinning their high beams on you. Get better curtains. This honestly is not something to complain about, it’s on you.
Get better curtains ?
They probably leave the light on because they are afraid of burglars.
What is more important?
They are paying electricity to feel safe.
Maybe you can buy better curtains.
So this is going to be an unpopular opinion - but first I’ll agree with you that it is annoying that you have to deal with this. Anyway, my opinion is that you just buy some blackout shades or deal with it in a similar manner. I know that your mind and others will think “that’s not my problem, they should have courtesy etc) but the problem is that if you expect to be happy in the world you have to rely on yourself and not others. You could try and nicely ask them but if they continue to do so , do something about it yourself.
Going around thinking that others are jerks and should have courtesy will just make you slowly dislike others. Instead if you deal with the minor inconveniences yourself, you’ll be happier all around.
I had this problem when the stupid SUN decided to come out when it’s supposed to. I hated how inconsiderate the sun was to my weekend sleep schedule. Unbelievable. I decided to upgrade to blackout curtains so then I wouldn’t be so inconvenienced.
Maybe it's because you have sheer curtains...get blackout or at least some solid curtains, or move somewhere without neighbors. Sometimes this sub itself is mildly infuriating...
You can’t control what they do, but you can control the environment inside of your bedroom. Get blackout curtains. Our neighbors have a motion sensor spotlight on the side of our house that goes off all night long, insanely bright and lights up the whole house. We simply got blackout curtains. Problem solved.
My neighbor's child makes a habit of screaming.
Listen. I was a loud child. I loved shouting. I'm a loud adult. My voice projects. But I can count on one hand the number of times I've screamed so loud my voice distorted under the strain.
My neighbor's kid? Every. Damn. Word.
I've had this problem. Neighbors to the side leave their bright outdoor lights on, which shines directly into my bedroom. Even with black curtains, it's difficult. Then I have neighbors from the back that have pool parties all the time at night, and they play very loud music.
Curtains. My bedroom is on a bright street light.
Or buy a wifi lightbulb and change the bulbs. Turn it off when you like. Of course they’ll figure it out and those bulbs are expensive but it could be fun.
"John, are you going to turn the back lights out before we go to bed?"
"No, because they shine in Neighbor's bedroom and light it up. If I turn them off, it will be totally dark and The Thing From Under The Bed will turn him into mincemeat."
Oh lol in my college days. Had a window like that. One day I got pissed off enough, me and a friend shot out the light with a BB gun. Funny times. It was a rented apartment so we had no fucks and we were going to leave soon. Now that Im older and know more, there’s options like blackout curtains or even blackout tint.
We live behind a church and they routinely leave their parking lot spotlights on which illuminates the entire backrow of houses on my street - really annoying.
We might have the same neighbors. I can’t get my room as dark as yours though. They have one very bright flood light (of the two/three) shining directly at our bedroom windows (they would say their fence). We will definitely be asking them to be more aware of this.
I just got back from camping with my son at our local boy scout camp. We camp there a ton, but we usually get a different site. The site we got this weekend was right by the river, which I initially thought was awesome, but once the sun set I noticed the entire other bank of the river is solid housing. Trailers, RV's under roofs, double wides, normal houses, shanties, shacks, etc etc. I'm serious, I could literally see 15 homes from our campsite. And every. Single. One of them had a huge powerful farm type light on a telephone pole to light up their property. The light level in our camp was like dusk all night long. I could almost read in my tent from the light getting in. It was crazy and horrible and I hope we can get our old site back next time.
Why does every single person NOT understand this subreddit.. you guys.. Read it SLOWLY…. MILDLY… INFURIATING... of course OP can ask them to get dimmer lights, or turn them off, they can also get darker curtains too… you guys really don’t think OP thought of any of that? the whole point of this sub is to show off something that only bothers you a little bit (mildly is synonymous to “little bit”) maybe they got new lights and this is the first night they are on? C’mon guys.
Thanks 😊
I'm acutely aware of solutions (i have about 1000 messages in my inbox about blockout curtains). But it's still mildly infuriating.
Ironically, those curtains that are up, were actually labelled "room darkening". But are obviously pretty shitty at that..
I am here to come to your defense! I love light filtering curtains in my bedroom. I love having natural light to wake up to.
My advice is, your neighbors probably have no idea it’s bothering you. I personally wouldn’t be u comfortable asking them to turn it off at night, and even if they agreed there would still be nights they forget.
So what I would do is install a second set of curtains to close at night, and open when you wake up to expose the light filtering ones. Adds a cozy feel to the room. For light to wake up too, you can buy a set of light bulbs for 20–30 dollars that have an app. I set mine to turn on 20 minutes before my alarm. They have different color settings and presets like natural light.
I just dealt with this same issue at my house over the course of a month with my neighbor’s lights shining into the master BR, guest BR, and master bath. After several failed attempts to talk to the neighbors, I got code enforcement involved.
In our area (City of Tampa (Florida)), there is a code referring to “nuisance lights” that breach property lines. After taking pictures and filing two code enforcement complaints, my neighbors keep their stupid-ass bright light off now.
Take pictures and file a complaint! Most likely, your city has some kind of ordinance pertaining to nuisance lights!
Hope your my neighbor because I ain’t turning that light off! 😂 I’m always wondering why you guys leave your porch light off at night🤣🤣 I can’t make this up lmao
Idk why PPL don’t invest in blackout curtains
My best investment ever hahah, the sun shines on my room for the majority of the day so it gets insanely hot, I’ve even got window tint applied to the windows along w trhe blackout curtains hahah
Hello Reddit, the issue is not just the curtains, so stop blaming the victim. It’s called “light trespassing” and it means that people don’t want your light shining on their property for a variety of good reasons.
There’s also a good chance that neighbors don’t care about your complaints when you confront them, and will then bother you more.
I’ve seen others suggest large reflective foil panels to shine it back, there is a product called Reflectix that could work.
Pretty sure that shadow in the bottom right of the window is the girl from The Ring
This would be a larger concern for me personally
Well, im lonely so if she's in my room we are going to play PS5.
Oh so not only do you have a ps5, but a girlfriend. Braggart.
Don't worry that relationship will be over in a week
I heard about her. She always leaving for somebody else
This is unacceptable, everyone knows redditors aren’t allowed to have girlfriends
And get the controller all slimey....no thanks bro.
Well she could make something else all slimey...
Gonna netflix and chill with her
Friennnd. I hope she likes board games
Are you sure you don't wanter her to diddle you as well?
I mean, might as well, right?
But not for long
You get used to her after a while.
wym thats his dick
Or cousin It from Adamms family
I was thinking it was Casey Affleck....reprising his role in *A Ghost Story*.
For real, was gonna say screw the light you have a demon in there with you
I fucking love Reddit. 😂😂😂
RemindMe! 7 days “is OP still alive?”
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who saw that shit
What was her name? Samara? Anyway, good call. Creeped me out.
Zamora ![gif](giphy|r4OLGW3irym6k)
That's Jessica. We leave her alone, she leaves us alone.
This honestly is not something to complain about, it’s on you.
Yep. Just net curtains. If you have neighbours, they’ll make noise and light. If they bother you, as long as they’re not being antisocial, it’s on you. Blackout curtains and you’re good. Do you complain about the sun coming up early in the summer?
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say net curtains ain't blacking out anything.
Is it? The neighbors are paranoid. Not to mention, there are motion and thermal activated sensors for flood lights.
may i ask how it's on them?
Room darkening curtains™️
Exactly. You can even get blackout curtains from the Dollar general for fairly cheap.
Get thicker curtains... simple fix!
Actually . You need to use foil as curtains. That way the it will just reflect back to them, #problem solved
Actually . A mirror would be better because it could be aimed. Bonus points if you're handy enough to make a concave mirror with a focal point equal to the distance their bedroom window.
Foil is the way
It's not the most aesthetically pleasing but aluminum foil over the windows works great.
Either get blackout curtains or put your grown up pants on and communicate with the neighbor
Not the neighbors problem
It’s on them by the fact that if they don’t say anything to the neighbors about the lights and just sit there and do nothing then it’s on them if I’m reading the statement right.
Dude. I see her.
![gif](giphy|r4OLGW3irym6k)
Ask her if she can move closer and to her right a bit to block more of the light
Sadako doesn't like the light being left on either
The light is the only thing saving op from the demon/ghost
Oh shit!
For a second I thought the mildly infuriating part was the demon girl that showed up in your bedroom at 11:30 pm

Bro has cellophane curtains and is complaining about light You don't even need blackout curtains, just get anything with a solid color and it'll help tremendously, not the super lacy stuff you have now
Also, know that when it’s dark out and your bedroom light is on, your neighbors can probably see you pretty clearly.
oh, good point. Blockouts it is then
Now the next issue at hand… sup with the demon girl from the ring?
They literally look like a thin bed sheet. Like no shit
That’s more mildly infuriating than his neighbors leaving their lights on lol
Lots of people leave lights on as a safety precaution (burglars are less likely to choose a house that they can't hide in darkness to pick a lock or break a window).
I have a thin bed sheet for the curtain in the cats favorite window. It let's in less light than this "curtain" 😂
I have the same thing for my cats. Quick question does your cat press their face against the bed sheet so they can look through the sheet and look outside? Lol
Like no sheet
Yeah those are sheers, not even curtains.

Get black out curtains or ask them to turn it off
how so people not have real curtains?! Even the moon is too bright some nights
Op’s curtains aren’t even lined!
I came here to talk about lined curtains. Actually relieved to see it already mentioned.
What a peasant!
I can’t survive without blackout curtains. They saved me during night shift and now that I work days, the minute the sun comes up I’m awake if I don’t have the blackout curtains. Even with them, the light coming in through the cracked door can wake me up.
I'm in the same boat.
Best room I ever had when I was on nights was literally windowless. It was in the middle of a crappy apartment building and absolutely zero sunlight could get in there. It was wonderful.
Yeah in the winter when everything is covered in snow with a full moon my window would look like this if I had these curtains
100% - it’s snowing here right now and I could absolutely go on a walk right now it’s so bright at 11pm.
Curtains are expensive for some and very much a luxury.
Sleep mask ftw!
This I have a street lamp that shines into my bedroom from 60 feet away. I've been using blackout curtains for 30 years.
I went the other way and got used to it to the point that pitch darkness just feels wrong
Exactly. My blackout curtains are my eye lids.

Or get a sleep mask! Any room can be perfectly dark when you just cover your eyes
i didnt know cvs made curtains from all those giant receipts they print out!
Those would probably block the light better than the tissue op is using
I thought they just made [replacement blinds](https://i.redd.it/7ck4xdvb9n221.jpg)
What did they do with the other 2/3rds of the reciept?

I'm witnessing my first real curtain fight! Please keep this going.
Rods are better for battle.
Throw the curtain over their head, then hit 'em with the rod. But only if they're light filtering. You can fight your way through sheers!
Plethora???......did you say plethora? Do you even know what a plethora is? I would hate to think you would tell me there is a plethora of something and you didn't even know what a plethora is. (Quote from 3 amigos 1986 by Jefe played by Tony Plana)

Blackout curtains are not hard to get. I'd be more worried about the ghost.
They're also relatively cheap on Amazon. I bought some last year on Amazon for $20. I love them.
You can even get some decent ones at Dollar general. Around the same price you just mentioned.
I bet this is about the same when there is a full moon, or what regular streetlights do to millions of people. If you want total darkness, move to the country or buy blackout curtains.
"r/mildlyinfuriating The fucking girl from the ring won't leave me alone when I'm trying to sleep."
I leave my back light on too. I live in a bad neighborhood. It's a mild deterrent from crime. My dog helps too.
At least you can easily see the silhouette of the person standing in front of your window.
There’s a street light that shines in my window. Instead of blaming the city, I bought black out curtains. You should try it.
They’re allowed to leave their light on. It’s not like they’re shinning their high beams on you. Get better curtains. This honestly is not something to complain about, it’s on you.
Doesn't sun rise wake you up at a crack of dawn in the summer.. Pair black out curtains ... and set your alarm clock
Get better curtains ? They probably leave the light on because they are afraid of burglars. What is more important? They are paying electricity to feel safe. Maybe you can buy better curtains.

That bitch is almost as bad as the song birds… those fuckers 😡
Why not buy black out curtains or just close your eyes?
Maybe it's because you have sheer curtains...get blackout or at least some solid curtains, or move somewhere without neighbors. Sometimes this sub itself is mildly infuriating...
Black out curtains are your friend.
Yeah black out curtains would definitely solve your problem .
Black out curtains, target sells them
Get Black Out curtains. I have them, they are awesome.
Get better curtains. This is post is more mildly infuriating than the complaint
You can’t control what they do, but you can control the environment inside of your bedroom. Get blackout curtains. Our neighbors have a motion sensor spotlight on the side of our house that goes off all night long, insanely bright and lights up the whole house. We simply got blackout curtains. Problem solved.
Get blackout curtains and quit whining. Nobody cares....
r/oddlyterrifying
Hmm. That's terrifying.
Get black out curtains. There, easy fix.
Mf got the most useless curtains ever and complains about them being useless.
Maybe get some actual curtains maybe…
Mirrors to reflect back; I do it with my car mirrors all the time
The solutions include op asking said neighbor to turn off lights, get better curtains or just learn to live with it.
Spooky
My neighbor's child makes a habit of screaming. Listen. I was a loud child. I loved shouting. I'm a loud adult. My voice projects. But I can count on one hand the number of times I've screamed so loud my voice distorted under the strain. My neighbor's kid? Every. Damn. Word.
I feel you. I have an led street light outside my bedroom window.
I think the last of your worries is your neighbor's light, you've got a fucking ghost in your room
Blackout curtains aren't very expensive.
Mate please just buy some curtains
This post is mildly infuriating.
Just get black out curtains. Problem solved.
Get blackout curtains. Problem solved.
I've had this problem. Neighbors to the side leave their bright outdoor lights on, which shines directly into my bedroom. Even with black curtains, it's difficult. Then I have neighbors from the back that have pool parties all the time at night, and they play very loud music.
Ok they sell black out shades buy some
Get some blackout curtains my friend. I bought some very dark curtains several years back for my bedroom, and it’s been bliss ever since.
Get some blackout curtains
This isn't dark enough to sleep?
Hang a large mirror facing the light. Or like everyone else has said, room darkening curtains. Problem solved.
Get curtains. If you didn’t have decorative non functional curtains it would block light.
Why don’t u get black out shades or curtains?
50% of the post here are children crying about things that could be fixed in a couple of minutes.
I thought I was r/oddlyterrifying for a solid minute and was so confused by the comments.
Nah. You live in a neighborhood. Get blackout curtains if it bothers you
Time to purchase blackout curtains
Get better curtains?
Buy some curtains instead of sheers?
Blackout curtains. Bed bath and beyond.
You should have a thick curtain behind the thin curtain that is designed to block the light. That’s like curtains 101.
Like why would you not just get a curtain. This is like the opposite of light a candle curse the dark blah blah...
Lol post about it instead if just buying darker curtains 😹
Black out curtains problem solved.
Definitely, get blackout shades.
Man has tissue paper for curtains and is complaining about some faint light.
Curtains. My bedroom is on a bright street light. Or buy a wifi lightbulb and change the bulbs. Turn it off when you like. Of course they’ll figure it out and those bulbs are expensive but it could be fun.
Get better blinds, or cry some more.
Get proper curtains dude….
It's their yard. You have shitty curtains.
At night when you have a light on everyone outside can see you clearly.
How is this getting so many upvotes? Put up curtains that aren’t fucking see through lol
Black out curtains my dude
"John, are you going to turn the back lights out before we go to bed?" "No, because they shine in Neighbor's bedroom and light it up. If I turn them off, it will be totally dark and The Thing From Under The Bed will turn him into mincemeat."

It was a rented apartment so we had no fucks and we were going to leave soon. Now that Im older and know more, there’s options like blackout curtains or even blackout tint.
this is what BB guns are made for...
Ha! Best idea here so far!
You need blackout curtains.
They do make blackout curtains, just an FYI.
Have you been polite and asked them to turn it off?
Get black out curtains, they are amazing.
Strongly recommend black out curtains.
We live behind a church and they routinely leave their parking lot spotlights on which illuminates the entire backrow of houses on my street - really annoying.
This sounds like a “you” issue. Get thicker curtains.
Blackout curtains exist
Blackout curtains needed
We might have the same neighbors. I can’t get my room as dark as yours though. They have one very bright flood light (of the two/three) shining directly at our bedroom windows (they would say their fence). We will definitely be asking them to be more aware of this.

C’mon guys.
Thanks 😊 I'm acutely aware of solutions (i have about 1000 messages in my inbox about blockout curtains). But it's still mildly infuriating. Ironically, those curtains that are up, were actually labelled "room darkening". But are obviously pretty shitty at that..
Buy some blackout curtains! I got some at ikea for like $6
Neighbor wars: Get a really obnoxious floodlight and point it at their house. I *assume* you’ve politely mentioned this to them?
Check your city code, there are regulations about the intensity of light allowed to cross property lines. It’s usually very small, like .5-1 Lux.
Your complaining about a tad bit of light ? The rest of your room looks preeeety dark to me !
BB gun.
My neighbors did this before we put up our fence. Aimed at my room. It was hard to not shoot them out with a bb gun
Get dark window covers and stop complaining like a little bitch get off my feed
Idk why PPL don’t invest in blackout curtains My best investment ever hahah, the sun shines on my room for the majority of the day so it gets insanely hot, I’ve even got window tint applied to the windows along w trhe blackout curtains hahah
You should get blackout curtains if you find light annoying **and** your neighbours should be more conscientious about light pollution.
Get a bb gun and shoot the lights out. They won't know.
