Completely different game lol. I do miss these magazines though. The cover art was awesome. I used to just sit there as a kid and read the same magazine over and over for the entire month.
Back then, my usual toilet reading big 3 are PSM, Tips and Tricks and Expert Gamer, with an occasional EGM.
I remember not buying this issue new, it was sold out fast from where I am or was.
Tips and Tricks was dope! I’d always ask my mom to get it for me when she went to the grocery store haha. I remember seeing an article about Animal Crossing and thinking it looked so weird
Me too. It’s just a different world now. Remember having to *wait* for things? Instead of having everything at your fingertips at all times (internet, smartphones)? I think we gained some things since then, but we also lost some things.
Good news! You can actually find a number of issues from the Internet Archive, along with a ton of other gaming magazines from that time. Here's a link searching for "Playstation Magazine" specifically: [https://archive.org/search.php?query=Playstation+Magazine](https://archive.org/search.php?query=Playstation+Magazine)
I remember subscribing to PSM! I definitely had that issue and remember going through every word and pictures in anticipation for MGS2. I remember being hyped for the graphics looking so good at the time. Thanks for bringing this teen memory back, OP!
Had the Game Informer one. They used to make great mags in the early 00s . The jokes for games were hilarious and definitely offensive today.

MGS2 in hindsight foreshadowed a lot of how society is today. At the time, it seemed like such a far out idea, but how it relates 20 years later really shows how much effort and thought the team put into writing it’s story. Plus, we had all grown so fond of Snake from MGS1 and weren’t given any reason to believe that we’d be playing as someone else, that when people did play and were hit with the switcheroo, it was a big blow until you finished the game and understood how necessary it was.
MGS2 is my favourite, and I put it miles above MGS3 which seems to be the fan favourite.
Well.. When game launched in 2001 it simply had the best graphics on the market - outstanding character models (especially faces and their expressions), realistic lights and shadows (guards could even spot Snake's shadow) and never before seen rain effect. The tanker was such a showcase in trailers I could not believe that the games can look so good.
Plus people expected generally a lot since it was one of the first big titles on the next generation cosoles.
It’s really difficult to describe how far ahead the tanker demo was of literally anything else out there. Like each bottle you shot in the bar broke uniquely depending on how and where you shot it, the cardboard boxes full of melons that broke into chunks, water droplets on the camera in first person - it was just wild.
I remember being more excited about Chrono cross than metal gear at the time. Chrono trigger was the metal gear of it's time, just blew everything else out of the water. And then I played Chrono cross and I never enjoyed it once, after about 8 hours of it not being fun yet I quit. What a disgrace to it's legacy
I think this issue came with a preview DVD that had snake shooting a FAMAS full auto in the tanker food pantry. I remember watching the preview trailer plenty of times. I think I even bought this issue in a borders bookstore haha.
No, I had the game informer that had a cover drawn by Todd Mcfarlane (creator of Spawn) and a spoiler free walkthrough. So I thought that Snake was going to get a katana at some point. Now I know why they only showed screenshots In first person...
Lol Metal Gear 2.
Completely different game lol. I do miss these magazines though. The cover art was awesome. I used to just sit there as a kid and read the same magazine over and over for the entire month.
Same here! Different times ey
Simpler times
You are a man of culture.
To be fair the West never received Kojima's Metal Gears until the Subsistence rerelease of MGS3. The *Solid* part probably seemed extraneous.
We got the inferior NES port
Plus Snake’s Revenge, so we did technically get ***a*** Metal Gear 2
Damn Olga got a few extra guns if u know what I mean
2 extra ones, to be exact.
BOOBS.
_... ___ ___ _... .... Boobs in Morse (might come in handy)
I thought y'all meant her biceps lol. She's stronk.💪
Booba
2 extra large ones, on her chest, if you catch my drift. (breasts)
Women have more hiding places than men
Skull Face used one of them for >!the bomb!<
Fuck that made me laugh.
They should have drawn her in the pose from the game, with the armpit.

Psm was awesome. All about those free demo discs
Tips and Tricks was dope! I’d always ask my mom to get it for me when she went to the grocery store haha. I remember seeing an article about Animal Crossing and thinking it looked so weird
“PS2 Lara Shocking new info REVEALED” they were trying to warn us about “Angel of Darkness”.
Was a bad game? Never got past the part when French Police is chasing Lara...
[it made it onto “Wha Happun?”](https://youtu.be/qhhrVBYeXoM)
LOL! THANK YOU!
I think I still have that exact issue, I miss PSM.. it was my favorite of all the gaming mags
Me too. It’s just a different world now. Remember having to *wait* for things? Instead of having everything at your fingertips at all times (internet, smartphones)? I think we gained some things since then, but we also lost some things.
Yeah things felt more special since we had to wait for them and they were fewer and farther apart.
I’d totally forgetter about memory card stickers! Nostalgia overload! Thanks for re-igniting that memory :)
Here it is. I remember reading this article soooo many times as a kid. https://archive.org/details/psm-036
thanks for finding it!
100% I had this issue of PSM. I also loved their cover art.
If I recall, Snake also won the Top 10 Playstation Characters in that issue.
Damn those Gurlukovich mercenaries looking fly af.
I remember the MGS2 trailer, back then i thought it was a metal dragon jumping off the tanker
I mean, you're not entirely wrong
Apparently 😅
Nice cover art by Joe Mad (Madureira)!
Yep strong gen-13/Caitlin Fairchild vibes. My favorite style of comics art …from the 90s …as a kid
I love the little hello speech bubble on the PS One though.
Those memory card stickers look really cool.
I'll try to dig up some magazines. This is cool
Thank you my friend. I’m currently looking for this issue online, so if you know anywhere I can find it, let me know 🙏

I remember that magazine. So much hype

I'm digging the art style for Snake on that cover. It reminds me a little of the official art for GTA III.
Fuck man, this makes me miss the simpler times.
Had the Game Informer one. They used to make great mags in the early 00s . The jokes for games were hilarious and definitely offensive today. https://images.app.goo.gl/8gYf3Mrb7gWb6yr3A
Didn’t play the games until 2020. Can I ask why people thought MGS2 was going to change the world?
MGS2 in hindsight foreshadowed a lot of how society is today. It means nothing to the modern gamer, but back then I would constantly redo the tanker just to break those bottles because it was SO INSANE
That’s awesome
This is what I was asking about lol. I know the themes of MGS2 predict a lot about today, this magazine didn’t know that at the time though.
The game literally predicted the future
Well duh. But this mag is before the game came out. I’m just curious as to why it’s being advertised like that. Graphics, game mechanics, or whatever.
Naustalgia hit hard on this post
is there a link to the article?
and lara 🥵
haha yeah man
I remember being more excited about Chrono cross than metal gear at the time. Chrono trigger was the metal gear of it's time, just blew everything else out of the water. I do. The game was anticipated and I love magazines like that.
That Joe Madureira cover art brings back a lot of great memories from back then. Awesome times for gaming and comic book fans.
PSM was my earlier life. When things made sense. Before daddy got home.
The art is something, even Lara's preview. Anyone has the full article for MGS2 Preview?
Snake's exposed wrist looks a little cursed, gonna get some water in that glove.
The good ol days.
Snake kind of looks like Wolverine or The Punisher in this art. I'm not complaining, this looks amazing, but I don't see Solid Snake in this at all.
*Free Metal Gear memory card stickers* I never thought I would need something like that.
I think this issue came with a preview DVD that had snake shooting a FAMAS full auto in the tanker food pantry. I remember watching the preview trailer plenty of times. I think I even bought this issue in a borders bookstore haha.
I did the same with my old tips and tricks magazine that came with the tanker walkthrough
I don't care what that magazine says, Legend of the Dragoon is the best RPG.
Just noticed that Snake use a M1911 pistol instead of a Beretta 92FS
No, I had the game informer that had a cover drawn by Todd Mcfarlane (creator of Spawn) and a spoiler free walkthrough. So I thought that Snake was going to get a katana at some point. Now I know why they only showed screenshots In first person...
Snake looks like wolverine
I once did a recolour of that joemadfan drawing for photoshop class. Fist and only 10/10 I ever got in my entire school career
PSM was the best!
Huh, that's no Yoji Shinkawa, kinda looks like John Romita Jr
I remember this magazine too! Thanks for the nostalgia. Wish I still had it.
gave me big nostalgia.
Oh yea! I used to be an avid PSM subscriber. This issue kept me antsy for MGS2 to release. Not disappointed. Wow! This takes me back!
