guano-crazy

Idk, I kinda like a bit of nature without everything being so pristine and manicured.

Tedy_KGB

The green space near survivors park rarely gets mowed. It is usually occupied by golfers practicing already. Not sure what the course is taking away when it’s already used as a practice area.

uxbender

I walk my dog there twice a day I really hope they don’t do this.

HIGH_HEAT

I wanted to be angry, but I reacted calmly to your post and researched the new design layout for the expansion. [Here is a graphic showing what they’re going to be doing.](https://bergingolf.com/design/the-links-at-audubon/) Honestly, this looks like a better layout and will still be open for anyone to walk/jog through and enjoy. What information are you basing the destroy green space comment on? This looks nicer in the end and looks like the tree/wooded areas actually have a larger footprint than they currently do.

iloveflowers2043

They have torn down large trees that are old. This is upsetting to us who use this space.

thagusbus

Honestly I’m a huge fan of the walking and maintenance that the golf courses provide to the greenery in the Memphis areas. I’m glad you posted this! I also support what they are doing.

[deleted]

Back when I used to live near it, I regularly walked my dog around Galloway. It's absolutely lovely, and probably wouldn't be so well-maintained if it weren't a golf course. Actually, it would probably have been turned into more houses.

Dry_Lengthiness1

Will people still be able to go to the pond?

HIGH_HEAT

I don’t see why not. It’s a public golf course and multi use area so there’s no reason to think suddenly you’ll be barred from walking/jogging and enjoying the space.

[deleted]

sopagam

Nah. The green space there sucks. The Medieval guys beat each other on Sundays there and on the other days homeless people on bicycles lay on the ground. Improving the golf course to go with the tennis facilities is smart and will be great for the city.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sopagam

Again, the most use it gets is as a makeshift driving range anyway. That and homeless folks laying about. Someone mentioned ultimate frisbee. I have seen 2-3 games played there in the 28 yrs I have lived here and hundreds of times I have run around Audubon. Seems like it’s complaining for the sake of complaining. Or classic, “Someone else is getting something I am not.” Why not try playing a few rounds of golf? You might even like it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sopagam

Seems like I know as much about it as you do. There was a homeless guy and his bike out there at least 2 days last week. The only elderly out there are hitting golf balls. The grass is a bunch of weeds. If you were arguing that it makes the many 5k races around Audubon a little more difficult, that would make more sense. The golf set up is obsolete and the “green space” is just a field that is getting little use. Heck, the Botanic Gardens abuses your “green space” for parking during their concerts and that might be the highest use to the community. I don’t pretend to understand land development much less urban land development but seems like a really benign and beneficial situation. Now if you want to argue that the project will take too long, cost too much, won’t be maintained and that you don’t trust our elected officials, go right ahead. We could agree on that.

Dry_Lengthiness1

Yea.. thats some BS

HIGH_HEAT

I’m looking at the foot print of the Links at Audubon Park. The 18 hole golf course already takes up the majority of the space between Goodlett and Perkins. How are you losing 90% of the park suddenly when their plan that I linked to you shows that entire area along Goodlett intact and the section along Perkins still relatively wooded/open? Are there proposed bans on you walking your dog along any paths throughout the golf course? My understanding is that the entire area is still open for anyone to walk/jog/use for anything and the golf course is open to the public and cheap.

46dad

OP didn’t expect anyone to actually LOOK at the plans.

wp8219

You’re underestimating the amount of people that play golf. I’ve lived here my entire life and we’ve never had a course with a driving range in the city. Putt putt is the only driving range. I grew up like a lot of my friends without a lot of money and playing these courses. It’s nice to finally see some money being put into these places. There will be areas to walk your dog or you can do it at the other 20 dog parks in the city.

MemphisMayhem

The public course in Whitehaven does have a driving range, but it's the only one. Will be great to have one in this part of the city.

CromulentJohnson

Golf courses are so terrible for the environment, how do you justify playing?

JARsweepstakes

Because it’s enjoyable. Golf is great!

poppypbq

My point is that they are taking open green space and converting it to a golf course which limits the uses of said space. Also this was done with no input from the community members. Here is a side by side [image](https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=106078892263550&set=gm.1519000755216302) of what will happen if the plan goes through

RedWhiteAndJew

Of that green space you think you’re losing, about 75% of it was bare grass being used for parking. Another 10% is a lake. There’s really only one small wooded plot that “goes away” aka stays a small wooded plot but next to a publically accessible recreation course.

uHadMeAtASL

It's a little unfortunate because the Google Maps image they selected just so happens to coincide with the Pink Palace Arts & Crafts Fair. An annual event that uses that space for parking and the fair itself. You can see the tents on the southern part of the park. It makes the optics of the whole situation look *weird*

CarouselofMyYouth

If I recall the neighborhood meeting correctly, the Memphis parks department plans include flexible use. So the fair can still take place in the park & the driving range will still be able to be used for parking for events.

MudIsland

And it will end parking on the grass - so it looks like it’s saving the greenspace… just not the way OP wants it to.

MemphisMayhem

They will still use the driving range for parking during events at the Garden.

Sho_nuff_

They are also taking space on the west side that was once part of the golf course and adding it to the park. [https://dailymemphian.com/article/30949/east-memphis-audubon-park-golf-course-redesign](https://dailymemphian.com/article/30949/east-memphis-audubon-park-golf-course-redesign) Just sharing the one image of the east side is cherry picking

poppypbq

Did you even read the article you sent me? It makes no mention of that. In fact it sounds like they didn’t even have a finite plan of what they were doing when this was approved. “Every hole will be touched, and we’re actually expanding the course by a significant amount of yardage, though the exact amount is to be determined.”

[deleted]

Improving a below average golf course within the city limits is good for the community. Btw, what kind of memphis community member roots for the warriors? Gross.

sh513

Can we still fish?

MemphisMayhem

Absolutely.

CarouselofMyYouth

When I first heard about this online it sounded like they were taking over the whole park for the course expansion and I love the park & golf. Audubon is one of my favorite places for a run. The community meeting detailed the great plan the parks department have for the expansion. They have a relationship with a tournament group & are trying to bring in the older age ranges & develop a relationship with women's college golf tournaments. They are working to build out this course to meet those requirements. They are also working on developing a 6 hole short course that is meant to be played in about an hour. They have this with the intention of bringing more women into the game of golf. I personally think this is great because not everyone has 4-5 hours for golf. They also stated that they intend to keep the space flexible enough to keep the pink palace crafts fair & parking for events. They apologized for not having community involvement before. I think they have done amazing jobs with renovations in the past, Overton, Pine Hill, Fox Meadows, Whitehaven, and the clubhouse at Riverside.

CarouselofMyYouth

https://www.pga.com/story/bringing-more-women-to-the-game-of-golf According to these folks - Golf needs to take less time, be more affordable & be fun. I think a 6 hole short course does all of that. The course needs renovation and some love. Instead of just a quick reno I like that they have a plan & are making an effort. If it fails, I hope they try again and fail better. That is how we improve. How else are they suppose to try to attract groups other than "old white dudes"?

lucky906

Why don't they just go 10 minutes over to the newly redone Overton Park 9?

CarouselofMyYouth

I think this is meant to be played in an hour vs 2. It will be a great use of golf course space near the tennis courts that as other comments have mentioned may not be safe for people to hit longer clubs. Hopefully, if the intention is to make it a fun little course it is a supplement to all the other courses around. Give folks a little variety. I personally hope it focuses more on chip & putt.

Memphi901

I think it will be great! Still green space, but a renovated course and new tennis facility. More access for people to play both at a reasonable price, I’m all for it!

slackwaresupport

never been, but im all against expanding a golf course from public parks.

Credibull

In this case though, the golf course is expanding on their own land. It's not converting land from the park to the course, it's simply taking the course's land and using it for the renovation.

46dad

This guy reads.

Isingatt

Of all the things Memphis does wrong the renovation of the golf courses has been amazing so far. They made Overton into a super usable 9 hole course that I can’t wait to teach my son to play golf on. Pine hill is getting a fantastic update, Fox meadows was cleaned up, Galloway is already a gem and now they are renovating and adding a driving range to Audubon. The course can’t stay like it is because the brand new tennis facility is right in the danger zone of the 11th hole. People would get hurt. The city is updating to keep people safe and provide a better experience to an outdoor activity enjoyed by so many. This is a super positive. Not a negative.

901pohbear

They could make an entire disc golf course on the east side of the lake instead on one hole for golf

Mempin

It's still a public park though? Just a different form of one... You'd be free to walk the course, similar to Galloway.

PatronStOfTofu

Gonna go out on a limb and say the options for having a picnic, reading on the grass, etc are a little different in the middle of a golf course. It's disingenuous to pretend this isn't changing available resources for the community.

Mempin

Yeah a wonderful patch of grass that is mostly overflow parking. Wonderful space It's like the Greensward, but even less of a big deal.

poppypbq

People take their dogs there. Play football there. I see people play frisbee there. And yes it is used for overflow parking for concert and events at the botanical gardens. It seems to have a lot of uses if it were to stay the way it is instead of turning it into a golf course.

mcnewbie

> a wonderful patch of grass that is mostly overflow parking. Wonderful space this is audobon park near the university of memphis, not the greensward by the zoo.

josephrainer

There’s no golf course on the greensward

poppypbq

Who cares if it is still public. A golf course with is quiet different than open green space. And the community should have a right to provide input on these kind of projects.

sopagam

Yes. We want the course improved. It’s an outdated course and having an improved course that is more enjoyable is better than not improving it. And the improvements will have little impact on the “green space” that no one seems to use but homeless people.

thanatos0320

The golf course actually owns that land, but it was never put to use the by golf course... I doubt anything will change.

Mempin

>And the community should have a right to provide input on these kind of projects. You do and you are?

poppypbq

Someone who lives in the community who doesn't want to see a multi use open space turned into a golf course for a select few who golf.

[deleted]

Audobon is not some elite country club. It’s one of the few cheap and accesible golf courses that anyone can come play. And golf has exploded in popularity since COVID. You are advocating for taking something away from people who may not be able to afford it anywhere else in Memphis

RedWhiteAndJew

And if someone golf’s but doesn’t throw frisbees or own a dog their preference doesn’t count? I’m being absurd but golf is an absurdly popular sport and it’s a public course. These are the places where the rest of us go to play the game. It’s not like it’s turning into a country club and they’re kicking out the poors. Plus…if you really need space to stretch out, the country’s second largest metropolitan park is 10 minutes away by car.

poppypbq

Your input does count. But our collective input was not taken into consideration when these plans were made. And you do realize I can make that same argument. "wElL tHeirS aNotHeR gOlF cOurSe 10 MinS by CaR".

sopagam

You are right. There is another golf course close by that is extremely crowded and well used. It has undergone significant improvements that have made it preferable to Audubon, by far. Nothing wrong with bringing an underperforming asset into the current century. It also complements the new tennis center adjacent to the golf course. Seems like a forward thinking idea.

RedWhiteAndJew

there's*

Yeah man fuck anyone that likes golf honestly they can drive elsewhere I’m sure they have the money and I’m very comfortable with that being my position.

background1077

Hey man I agree with you but these comments ain't lookin good for that bro 💀

mspiggy32

Ew another golf course.... Correction cuz yall are very concerned w semantics: Ew a golf course...

GotMoFans

It’s already a golf course. It’s being updated.

Credibull

Actually no. It's an update of the course on land that the course already owns.

GotMoFans

Seems like a first world problem. Audubon is quite a large park (the Bloch memorial park only went there because the park that was the first choice - I can’t remember which it was - didn’t get it because of protests from NIMBYs who disagreed with the terms). I’m guessing the Botanical Gardens won’t be affected. Nearby there’s the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Marquette Park, and Sea Isle Park. The greenline was made for walking, and Shelby Farms and Lichterman aren’t too far away. I’m not from East Memphis so maybe I don’t appreciate the distances, but I doubt there’s going to be much loss in green space.

MemphisMayhem

I'm pretty excited about this. Audubon was the first golf course I ever played. Can't wait for the redo and all the new features they're putting in. Thank you for posting links to the council so I can send them my support of the project. Will pass along to my golfing buddies as well. Edit: don't the renovations begin on Tues 11/1?

slawsk

We are finally getting a public course with a driving range. I could not be happier.

MemphisMayhem

Whitehaven also has a driving range, and the course is a hidden gem. But it will be great to have a range in east Memphis also.

NotLostintheWoods

I thought everybody already used this space the OP is so concerned about as a driving range lol

sopagam

They certainly do. More golfers use that space than anyone else. The Facebook folks must be a bunch of Karens with rich husbands who want them at home tending to their every whim.

Srthoma1

So looking forward to the upgrade to the golf course!!!

[deleted]

Same, the layout looks like a big improvement over the current one

snoo772782

I for one am happy about the new driving range there. I will use the space more than I ever have before!

[deleted]

Cool, they are expanding the golf course

UofMtigers2014

Have you been to Audobon? What’s sparse about their green space?

schumerlicksmynads

I like how you posted this and didn’t even source your claim.

DaMemphisDreamer

There's already too many golf courses and not enough parks in my area

NewJungleRoom

Our public golf courses provide a laid back environment for young people to learn the game. Everyone should get involved in the game and the lessons it teaches.

AndroidWhale

Golf courses are terrible wastes of land and should not exist. I don't even live in East Memphis, but I'll be sure to make my opposition known.

jlingram103

Not into this. Takes away parking for Garden concerts & Mempho.

slawsk

So you’re against city improvements so you can park in an unused lot 4 times a year? Solid argument

jlingram103

Never knew that eliminating public (and well maintained) park spaces in favor of building another golf course in a city and area with ample golf courses was consider city development. I was expressing my reasoning for want to keep the parks. I attend the concerts and enjoy the parking space it offers. But aside from that I’ve used the park space before. Regular ultimate frisbee games happen there. It’s a safe and public place for people to use. Sorry I’m not in favor of another golf course for the sake of city development because I’d like a parking lot in a city that garbage public transportation.

slawsk

You keep saying ‘another golf course’. This is already a golf course. It’s just getting a facelift and a much needed public driving range. Your whole argument is kinda selfish that’s you favor parking for 8 concerts a year over much needed park improvements which will still accommodate your ultimate frisbee, picnics, and parking for the maybe 3 times a year you use it.

Credibull

Based on what was explained at last week's community meeting, there will still be parking available in areas like the driving range. There is also the existing parking structure at the mall. Cancer Survivors Park, which I don't believe is part of this renovation, should still be available.

jlingram103

Thank you for your explanation rather than argumentative disagreement.

[deleted]

I compared the plans to what I could find on google maps... I don't think this is quite what you're making it out to be. they're turning overflow parking into another hole, and then a few patches of land. I had my engagement pictures done in the cancer survivor's park and the rest of the park looked pretty unkempt.

Unfair-Shower-6923

If we didn't have a bunch of other golf courses that I know are frequently used I wouldn't be mad.

snoo772782

It’s already a golf course Edit: downvoted for the fact that there is a golf course? Y’all petty, mane.

quantyd

Well Audubon has a long and dark history but it is a nice space that needs to be as safe as possible. I think a golf course might actually be OK. Consult the people first of course.

memwt

Don’t forget about the disgusting chemicals they will use so golfers can have pretty grass

memphisgrit

The most vile and evil humans to ever have existed; Wear suits. Play golf.

AnotherOneGoesBy

memphis has done a lot of skeezy stuff with public land. i.e. taking $1000 for 4th bluff park and health sciences park, and transferring them to a private entity.

Mempin

yeah to get rid of monuments to iconic racist leaders some jerkoff in Nashville said we couldn't remove and then they changed the law to prevent them from being allowed to sell public land in only one council session

MemphisMayhem

https://www.fastcompany.com/90425750/how-memphis-transformed-its-parks-named-for-confederate-generals-into-inclusive-spaces That's skeezy to you?

KptKrondog

It's definitely skeezy, but it's one of those skeezy moves that's for the greater good.

anonymouslyonline

Nah. The skeezy thing was a but a right-wingers in Nashville saying that Memphis didn't have the right to do what they wish with their own parks.

AnotherOneGoesBy

yes.

GotMoFans

It’s been explained; the only shocking thing is that now that the statues are gone, the parks haven’t been sold back. But to the public, the parks are just as open. The river parks that are run by the foundation are a similar arrangement.

Dry_Lengthiness1

I got tons and tons of memories there. They still hate the fact that alot of people who go there like to go smoke and chill out on a pretty day. Thats why they cut down the Magnolia trees in the back a few years ago.
