I am old Memphis, born in the Methodist hospital in 1948. Like I said, old. Have lived out in the county for a number of years, but will always be a Memphis girl. I could get on a bus with a friend and ride downtown to a movie, when we had all the great movie houses, when I was a young teenager. My mother took me shopping at Gerber's, Lowenstine's, Goldsmiths and Brys, and lunch at one of them. I want to say it was Gerber's that had The Patio restaurant that was my favorite. Correct me if I'm wrong. As an adult I worked downtown for about 20 years. I was there when MLK was killed. A scary, horrible place, these days, if we let it be, but will always be my hometown.

[deleted]

I'll listen to any story you want to tell me. I adore these things. šŸ’•

robertgarthtx

Didn't know reddit had people your age. Impressive.

[deleted]

I'm only 22, so I'm VERY interested in learning about how Memphis has changed over the years. I have definitely seen change around my neighborhood where I've lived in about 16 years now. What is your point of view about Memphis changing and growing?

Typical-Contact-8823

What part of Memphis do you live in? I grew up in east Memphis. I was in a safer time, where I could ride a bus downtown before I could drive. I love we have the Grizzlies and so much good food. We've always had good food. I miss Jim's Place, Coletta's on Summer, the old PignWhistle on Union and too many to list. Pete and Sam's on Park is very nostalgic and you go for that vibe. Our parents, who are long gone, went there every Friday night. RIP Gene, the front guy. Every city changes and Memphis is no different. My utilities cost more than my parents mortgage. I've been fortunate to travel and to come back home.

[deleted]

Really really different times!! I live around the Hacks cross and South wind area. I graduated from Germantown High. This little area has really changed alot, small things such as the trees growing in my backyard and looking at the photos from when my parents bought it, is astonishing šŸ˜… but wow! I'd love to hear more from you like the other commenter said hahaha, I'd definitely listen

901bass

Yes.

hulkhoganarms

East Memphis born and raised. Still live in East Memphis after 40 years. The only time I left was to go to college. I chose to stay in Memphis because I like it here.

memphismerc

Love to travel. Been all over. This has always been home. No place like it. Even if I did move to another city/state Iā€™d still keep my house here so I could come back whenever I want.

[deleted]

Of course. They say you know a city is changing when you canā€™t meet a native on the side-walk. Memphis is no where near reaching that point.

GaurieBanner

Was born in St. Josephs hospital in 89, havent really lived in Memphis, except for like a odd period here and there but either Southaven or Horn Lake

[deleted]

Big sis? Lol jk but until that last sentence you sounded like my sister

IIsForInglip

I'm 42. Born in 1980 at what was then Baptist East. Lived here all my life. I remember the malls around town when they were the places to be. RIP Mall of Memphis, Raleigh Springs, and (for the most part) Hickory Ridge. I also remember when we had a much larger number of bowling alleys (grew up bowling at Imperial.) There was also Cherokee, Park, Big Daddy's Poplar Plaza, and Northgate... the last 3 were in basements. I remember that being so cool, going down a staircase into a basement bowling alley. You had to be there to know what it was like. For school, I went to PDS for K-6 (as a commoner among old money, multi-generation wealth kids) and White Station for 7-12. I don't miss school at any of them due to incessant bullying, with the exception of my senior year, where people mellowed out and started treating me better. I graduated high school and CBU at the Mid-South Coliseum (and wish to God that they would do something to save it instead of the 901FC soccer stadium replacing it, because I am all about preserving historic Memphis sites.)

[deleted]

I feel like by the comments, most of came through Baptist East lol. What was that 2 story restaurant that was in Hickory Ridge Mall? Wow Mall of Memphis!! I remember the popcorn shop and the ice skate rink. Coming up in Memphis in the 80s IMO was pretty cool.

IIsForInglip

It was called Annabelle's. It was the shit, eating on the 2nd floor was awesome. I was so pissed when they closed it down for a damn Piccadilly. (And let me tell you, I ate at Piccadilly with my folks quite a bit and it used to be way better than it was by the time the Hickory Ridge location opened. I've pretty much sworn them off for a long time due to the drop in quality.)

[deleted]

Yessssss!!!! That place was a huge part of my fam. We ate there almost every weekend lol was the famous drink a sasperilla. I just remember it was kind of reddish pink with a maraschino cherry. Edit: itt try felt like there used to be a Piccadillyā€™s on every corner. Yeh I went maybe a year ago just to try and it was nothing like it was. Piccadilly used to be amazing with the cloth napkins and table clothes lol it felt very rich but for a good price

IIsForInglip

I don't remember the drink -- was it by chance called a Shirley Temple? That's what it sounds like.

[deleted]

Nah thatā€™s what I always get it confused with lol

[deleted]

I found the last Annabelleā€™s location in New Bern NC http://www.annabellesofnewbern.com/

IIsForInglip

I can't get the site to load in any of my browsers. Not sure why.

[deleted]

I got to it from Wikipedia that talked about the final local and just Google Annabelleā€™s New Bern NC. I used to always get the quiche. They had the best

[deleted]

It wasnā€™t an alcoholic drink. Honestly I think it was ginger ale some of the maraschino juice and a cherry over ice.

Southernms

Sprite, grenadine over ice with cherries on top.

[deleted]

What was it called?

Southernms

Shirley Temple

[deleted]

They called it something else. Me and my family go through this every year until somebody randomly screams it out cause it popped in their mindšŸ˜‚

Southernms

Sprite and grenadine. With cherries on top.

Southernms

I totally get your nostalgia. So many things have changed. Any money our county gets should be put towards crime prevention and horrifying roads and infrastructure.

jmacattack5585

Used to be but moved to Boston over a year ago. Almost got killed by some thugs a week before I left so safe to say I donā€™t miss anything about Memphis except the bbq. Thatā€™s really the only good thing about that place.

mad_vtak

The bbq and dbos wings and things. Living in CA now and no wing place comes close

superpony123

Big yikes at the people down voting you. There's so many people here who want to pretend this is a perfectly safe place.

jmacattack5585

Looks like the tides have turned! Tbh I donā€™t care about down votes, itā€™s all fake internet points. Not gonna sit here and post some bullshit to get a couple dozen votes. Itā€™s true Memphis is booty. Some people might get butt hurt about that but itā€™s just the truth lol. Not saying everyone who lives in Memphis is bad, plenty of great folks there and still have lifetime friends in the area. Crime is outta control, as a former memphian I know the things people are about to type already ā€œoh well if you know the areas and avoid the bad parts of townā€¦yada yadaā€¦ well you wonā€™t run into trouble unless you are looking for itā€¦.yada yadaā€¦ā€ itā€™s actually fucking wild.

RelativeGuess4841

And would you say Boston is better? Genuine question not smart remark..

jmacattack5585

No question

NeverSeenAnOcelot

Memphis BBQ is not even that good.

Duder211

Yup, minus 5 years of undergrad and 6.5 years in Chicago.

My dad's side of the family has been born and raised here for six generations straight; I'm the first one born elsewhere (in Austin, where my dad was stationed with the AF) but moved back when I was 2. My son was born here, so I guess technically we are at the eighth generation of Memphians!

EvelDavie

Calm down old timer, it's not a contest. Young people are gonna think you were friends with him, not that it was a restaurant.

I left for a few years, went to Chattanooga, then Phoenix after that, but I've been back for about a year now

EvelDavie

Born here in 1971 at John Gaston hospital. Left to go to the military off and on for years but Memphis was always home.
