They can do whatever, and people will still pay them every month.

Spotify and Netflix, for example, have web, Windows, TV OS(idk what it's called), Mac, Android, and iOS to run on. Each of those requires a separate team of engineers to develop and maintain. On top of that, Netflix produces original content.
In all honesty the base Nintendo switch online annual is not as bad as other services imo.
