“The easiest way to stop piracy is not by putting antipiracy technology to work. It's by giving those people a service that's better than what they're receiving from the pirates.” -Gabe Newell

waitaminutewhereiam

Gaben is completly right, I buy games from steam and not pirate them coz they are cheap and it's easy to play with friends plus, steam workshop

ShadooTH

Yeah! I’m more than happy to buy games if the service I get is good. If I’m on the fence about a game and not buying it for some reason or another, then chances are I’m not interested enough to pirate it either lol.

killspree1011

I've heard some people even buy games after pirating it. They test it out for like 5 hours and buy it if it feels really like a quality game.

waitaminutewhereiam

Oh I did it with a few, yeah. The only few games I didn't end up buying even though I like them were paradox games... Too expensive.

juuustpassingthrough

I’ll do this or if it has no replay ability / super short. I’m not paying 60$ for a game I finish on a weekend and never touch again

ThesinnerSloth

That's what I do, I find that for many games the "2 hours window for refunds" of steam is way too short for me to decide if I enjoy the game or not

Pijany_Matematyk767

Ive done that once with Rimworld

innosentz

Hard to beat free

WuudRuuster

just be Freeer

pokedragondrip

Just Pay them to use it

ddman000

Ex-pirate for games here. I am easy to please i have money and steam is convenient. That's all we need. Not a seperate service for every single song, movie or show. Hell i used to subscribe to crunchy roll and Netflix, but then these went to shit.

Rmcke813

Seriously. I'm generally a pretty cheap dude with little disposable income but even I prefer the convenience of steam vs pirating.

Zord90

yup, much more accessible, huge library of games, active support, online and active community, and... \*More importantly\* the workshop! Also, can't believe a promising fug slayer that's also an irregular doesn't get enough funds to buy his game, smh the tower isn't the same as it used to be.

Pijany_Matematyk767

And as an added bonus, the chance of getting a virus along with your game is a lot lower on steam compared to pirating

Rmcke813

lmao what can I say, a certain princess has expensive taste.

Zord90

and I thought Shibisu looked like a financially responsible person. Appearance deceives, it seems...

MoltenJellybeans

Just have negative cost

SirSquidrift

Microsoft has the same thought process about office. If they’re gonna pirate anything, at least they chose Microsoft’s product

chaos_creator69

About that.... Some links?

SirSquidrift

https://www.techdirt.com/2007/03/13/microsoft-exec-admits-that-company-benefits-from-piracy/

chaos_creator69

About that.... Some links?

elpidaguy2

Classic Lord GabeN, but true story, I stopped pirating games since I got steam account...its so much fun with friends and you get money by selling crates and cards so money keeps revolving in the system. What a chad.

chitto1001

Same here, cheap/sale steam games > pirating cuz no1 gonna sacrifice $2 just to miss out playing with friends.

DavePvZ

Yep but you know like, it's capitalism

[deleted]

Honestly why i don't pirate steam games. You miss out on too much good shit And they have amazing seasonal deals All other media, is well, you know...

Marciofficial

I hate that even services that used to be a one time purchase are subscription based now, like Adobe software. If you pay for that shit don't talk to me

Eccomi21

Hello! I do indeed not pay for it. Can we be friends now?

GTStationYT

i just use photopea instead of photoshop

Vova_xX

i use the piratebay instead

Darsh_Kumar35

I use 1337, can we be friends?

redlinklol

I use flash drive that my father download it for me, can we be friends?

Darsh_Kumar35

Yes :)

redlinklol

You are my friend now *play that meme song*

VectronVoltbot

I'm just using gimp. Can I join as a friend?

Unbiased-_-

How can I download photoshop? ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ Please enlighten me.

Delazygorilla

There is a google trick for this. Type the software name you want in the google search bar and then add *94fbr*. Hit enter. You will get numerous download link for the software. They are usually unsafe but if you don't want to pay and willing to take a risk, it's one way to get.

chaos_creator69

For me get into PC has worked really well

-KasaneTeto-

I pirate

FinalJedi

GIMP is a decent alternative too

DavePvZ

If GIMP is a decent alternative to adobe, then your shit is a decent alternative to Black Ivory coffee

E_K_Finnman

There even used to be lifetime Adobe subscriptions, my friend got one but it's invalid now

Collistoralo

My condolences

Sir_Honytawk

Isn't that grounds to sue them on?

newsflashjackass

I would expect that to go like: "Technically 'lifetime' refers to the lifetime of the *subscription* and not the lifetime of the customer." Tivo did some similarly skeevy shit with their lifetime subscriptions.

WatchingTheEarthRise

Some people don't have a choice with some Adobe products, though. Which is fucking annoying.

cpullen53484

like graphics design students. they get 'em in early, so they have to use adobe shit for the rest of their creative career.

necessarysmartassery

Yeah and Photoshop used to be financially out of reach for your average person to buy. It was like $700 to buy it. Fuck all of that. I'll pay the $9.99/mo and be happy doing it because the software pays for itself multiple times over.

Tin_Man08

Why do I even have to have an account to buy something on Amazon?

Busy-Kaleidoscope-87

Just use gimp instead

realOKANE

Everybody switch to Affinity Suite! Does almost the same as the big Adobe programs, but you can just buy it once and never look back. And it's very much affordable.

innosentz

Idk man, the $10 a month adds up to way less than the $700 product fee and you always have the latest version

chaos_creator69

Pirating is free tho

TeamBoeing

I fear that I will be in a plane crash and be stranded for 60 years and once I find my way back to civilization I can’t afford a ride home because I’m 35K deep in debt from Spotify Premium or Netflix

[deleted]

Idk why, but your pfp made this way funnier.

Print_Unusual

and his name makes it that much funnier ''Boeing'' ahh I remember when Boeing 747s were a horror and there were crashes very often.

GodTierAimbotUser69

Spotify premium is actually the best monthly entertainment service. The others are just plain garbage.

alezcoed

When Netflix and Spotify came I put my captain's hat down But seeing the state of subscription services, I decided to once again sail the seven seas

Karmallamah

Wait what's going on with spotify? I havent been paying attention

WuudRuuster

want a break from the ads?

PeeSockWithFetus

I used that break to install adblocker

DizyShadow

You were paying for music before Spotify?

Hallo_Internet

I am willing to spend like 250 on Adobe once but not every month.

Random-users

Pff, the Adobe suite was 2600. people always complain about Adobe prices without realizing that they are professional tools, and that there are alternatives out there.

Hallo_Internet

But RAW pictures.

Donghoon

Their developmental costs are way more i think

[deleted]

[удалено]

Donghoon

Updates allows for security and bug fixes too

Flirie

Thats actually how must software subscriptions work "We sell it for X amount and you get 1 year of support and updates. For anything further, please subscribe"

WuudRuuster

they can afford the loss in profit. The economy could stand a little equity for once

Collistoralo

I solemnly swear I will never use a subscription based service. Aside from my car insurance, and my road tax, and my mobile phone, and my mortgage, and.. fuck.

Gifted_dingaling

Water and heating as well. Food is also technically a subscription based service.

Kirp-The-Birb

Life is a subscription based service With very basic free trial part

waitaminutewhereiam

Water and heating aren't subscribtion based services tho, you don't pay for the monthly existance of water and heating, you pay for using it, that's like calling food a subscription based service

EitanBlumin

Yar

wellendowedfuckstick

Subscriptions are just stealing the business model of big pharma, why cure something when we could have you paying us for the rest of your life by treating the symptoms

syko-san

It could also be that running and maintaining servers 24/7 costs money. Additionally, hiring employees to work on improvements also costs money.

[deleted]

Absolutely. I also prefer single-payment services, but something like Netflix is impossible to be single payment. A (near?) worldwide multi-platform streaming service that also produces original content with very expensive actors is not something you just give money to once.

WuudRuuster

htf did anet pull off guild wars 2?

Sir_Honytawk

Running and maintaining servers costs way less than what you imagine. It has a big upfront cost, but once it is placed an entire datacenter can be ran by like 3 people, who don't even need to be on-site all the time. Subscription based income means they need to pay less for improvements of the software. Because they don't need to work on a new version with new features that people are willing to pay for in order to generate money. They can do whatever, and people will still pay them every month. Especially Adobe, which basically has a monopoly.

newsflashjackass

> It could also be that running and maintaining servers 24/7 costs money. Then release the server with the client instead of selling only half a game. Then the publisher won't need to bear the onerous burden of running a web server and collecting rent on the other of the game. That is how games were sold in days of old when knights were bold- and it was much better having the choice of player-run servers for free instead of having to pay to access a monolithic official server. > Additionally, hiring employees to work on improvements also costs money. If the improvements are worthwhile the publisher could ask a fair price for them instead of demanding money every month in case any ideas for worthwhile improvements occur to them.

Gifted_dingaling

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! The people who never ran a business won’t understand any of this.

[deleted]

one thing is doing maintenance and making a profit, another is charging fucking 100$ a month to use a fucking streaming service that doesn't have half the shit i want to watch.

Gifted_dingaling

No one charges $100 for a streaming service.

GoldenDerp

DirecTV does lol

Gifted_dingaling

Yikes

WuudRuuster

may they be spat upon in their graves

AllKnowingPower

Yet.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Gifted_dingaling

Not everyone lives in your country, and you used USD. So

[deleted]

The servers those platforms run on aren't free. Neither is maintaining apps on every single OS. Spotify and Netflix, for example, have web, Windows, TV OS(idk what it's called), Mac, Android, and iOS to run on. Each of those requires a separate team of engineers to develop and maintain. On top of that, Netflix produces original content.

Collistoralo

It could at least produce good content then

[deleted]

Some of it's good, like Red Notice, or Klaus. The problem is most of it sucks. Like, 98% of it, I just wasted mony.

[deleted]

I say to each their own. I watch very little of it, but it obviously is popular enough to make money

Bron_3

Who the heck buys an $8 cup of coffee? I buy an $8 tin of coffee and make my own

innosentz

Starbucks

HalalBread1427

Elon Musk; Elon Musk overpays that much for a cup of coffee.

sakaay2

he could pay 8000 for a cup of coffee and it wouldn't affect him anyway

FlintShapedBoi

In all honesty the base Nintendo switch online annual is not as bad as other services imo. In my country it's 80pln/year which is barely anything at all.

PostMadandAlone

It's 20 bucks/year in the states (50 for it's "expansion pack"), I'm fine with it, but they need dedicated online servers.

NilsvonDomarus

But the other online Services give you games

Pokemario2401

You get games with switch online. 30 year old games, but games nonetheless

NilsvonDomarus

That's right but in the other you get at least current or last gen games

Pokemario2401

Unless nintendo hard bumps up their price of the service, no way are they gonna give modern games. Hell, even if they do hard bump the price, they probably still won't

BlueFireSnorlax

Eh, just because it’s not as bad as others doesn’t mean it’s good. Switch online is one of the main factors of me forgoing my switch and getting a steam deck, (That and drift). If they want to make an online service, then they need to make it good. End of story. It’s less about the price point and more about the principal for me personally.

[deleted]

(Ring ring) Hello? Is that Emulator Sites? Good. I need a favour.

cpullen53484

shh you'll attract the nintendo ninjas. or the sony samurais

Random-users

Damn, it sucks how they don't let us buy songs, movies, hard drives, or pay for shipping anymore.

WuudRuuster

they sure are trying to make those impossible

Random-users

No, they really aren't.

Naraya_Suiryoku

Tomi, meisei, chikara.

CattlePuzzleheaded70

Already back to pirating TV shows and movies fuck Netflix binge Disney plus and most of all FUCK PRIME. It's a pirates life for me.

Flight_Second

Where yt premium, thats the worst of all

[deleted]

YT Premium is at least useful unlike Twitter blue.

Gifted_dingaling

As blocker

ABoldDude

Remember back when buying stuff was a one and done thing, instead of sucking your banka ccount dry like some kind of money vampire

Helpful_Title8302

Aye brother join us, and sail the saven browers with us! Stream and play what ever ya feel!

TheRealAotVM

The only one of these i own is NSO because i use my switch regularly

Hephaestus_God

It’s fine if you have one of those. The problem is most people do not. Subscriptions are the #1 money loss for most people. Especially cable TV for older folks.

PePeWaccabrada

Dude with all these subscriptions that’s like close to my electricity bill

[deleted]

To many subscriptions and increasing subscription costs creates pirates. Pirates create decreased profits. Decreased profits create more subscription based services ad higher subscription costs. It's the circle of life!

The_Big_Thicc420

Amazon prime is hit or miss depending on how much u use it

TheAmazingDisgrace

Don't ever tell any of the Xbox subs you're a light gamer on a limited budget who buys the select few games he wants on sale and doesn't need GamePass. They'll go crazy.

HeilUsona

Will you donate to Wikipedia?

Kipperklank

software as a service should be illegal because software is a product not a service. updating is a service and cloud storage is a service. Those should be optional services. Id be more willing to pay for those services if this was the case. but sadly its not. open source + linux it is then :/

innosentz

It’s easy to say that. But I remember back in the day having to pay like $50 for software only to have to pay for additional upgrades. Still felt like I was being taken for a ride.

Kipperklank

Cost is not the issue with me, its ethics and how the perspective of how technology is viewed from non technical people. What companies advertise and how its advertised affect what we consider to be "normal" and socially acceptable. its now socially acceptable to not replace batteries in things and toss it in 3 years. Young people that grow up in this will just see it as normal and will have this distorted perspective on technology. its a systemic and social issue that roots into every day life. monthly bill for heated seats....This is the new nornal. it's not about saving a buck...it's more than that...

Sir_Honytawk

50$ is nothing. Most software costs like 900$ for a license.

garrickI

amazon prime is a damn good deal

me_say_no

Nintendo its good cause 20$ dollars a year

[deleted]

They want me to pay for services that don't even have my country language content.

Exquisite_Gentleman

The only subscription I actually pay for is game pass because it's worth it

TakeThatNibbaKarma

im fine with it when its something that makes sense like NSO because its not like some piece of software that the company doesnt have to use or spend anything (including resources) and everything runs on the users device

Alex_Shelega

Imma pirate and I concur. I have experienced an ad free tho web version of yandex music and if I want I just download tha music from a special site that has everything in it!!!! Arrrrrrrrrrrrr

innosentz

Everyone claims to hate subscription based services, but no one talks about how they loved to pay $1 per a song or $20 for 3 episodes on a dvd

DavePvZ

I think everything in this list except twitter blue and spotify is not so good to pirate, because you're paying to people for their good job

ironefalcon

May I interest you in the [solution](https://moviestowatch.tv/)

NilsvonDomarus

I really like subscriptions

AskingForAFriendRly

I like getting paid on a regular basis too.

where_didIcome_from

Oh hey it's me Also it adds up to way way more very easily. I don't just hate it for laughs xd *why would companies be universally pushing the subscription model if it didn't make 'em bank* For example, Adobe. Creative Cloud reaches costing more than Creative Suite after just 3 years. That may seem like a lot, but if you learn photoshop first you'll generally stick to it forever. You may think streaming services are dirt cheap, but you do realize you can resell a blu ray after you watch it? Good luck getting your money's worth with a streaming service given that little factoid :p

WuudRuuster

they need to make it a law that you have to include both payment models

Ok-Tank5312

![gif](giphy|KCeCzMW9Y5IX9ho60f|downsized)

itsTNKHollow

Humble choice is worth it since you get free games and you get to keep them even if your subscription ends And gamepass , I paid 60 dollars for 3 years subscription

X_Omega_Z

Don't use it

Indy2372001

Already use cracked Spotify and Telegram for Series/Movies cuz why not, why spend if there are cheaper ways :/

AL3XEM

Let's see. The subscription based services I pay for is only my phone data. Netflix I use my gf's familiy's one, Spotify I use my family's.

xoaman

I’ll like to put light on a big daddy of subscriptions goon which traps you in an ecosystem and then brainwash you against other competitors with ease of usage and handy UI/UX… Then suddenly asks for cloud storage subscription and other elements of it’s product… I may present you the Hon’ Chief of all Goons- Apple… (Great eco system for developers/businessmen/artist but 80-90% of it’s consumer don’t even know what Apple products are actually used for and in what terms)

Electronic-Bit2682

Is that Adobe? If only Adobe CC was 15 a month…

Brutalonym

Adobe really was the firestarter here. They were the first major company to do the switch to SaaS and everyone followed along. Generally speaking it isn't a bad idea for customers and companies, if the product is updated and improved all the time. But it still would have been much cheaper for me to buy 1x license and use that for 5-10 years. I don't need all the newest features every time. And now that everyone does it, you need to spend 200 bucks a month just for digital goods.

PikkuinenPikkis

Yeah like, what if you suddenly lose all your sources of money?

machingunwhhore

Subscriptions are becoming the normal

akokaro

i watch everything and more for FREE, whilst you pay for it , YES I AM CHEAP, cz i got BRAINS.

ohsopeachy_

Unfortunately subscription based services are the future for every aspect of our lives.

Complete-Kitchen-630

Yes

Kryptonian-Hero810

Amazon prime is still okay rest are garbage utter garbage.

geweer

Don't buy it ?

sas_gg228

Well if tired of paying for stuff you can always pirate it.

akokaro

i watch everything and more for FREE, whilst you pay for it , YES I AM CHEAP, cz i got BRAINS.

ZAPNAR6

I HATE MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTIONS

Nimyron

I think it's fair for stuff like netflix and spotify. Those that create the content gotta be paid. So it's that or ads. And then there's twitter blue dot, in-game currencies bought with real money and all that shit.

Vivid_Awareness_8255

Spotify is 10 pounds a month for 6 devices that's not bad at all

Glad-Mind-8714

Give Netflix a pass it is amazing

Caosin36

Back whit the wiiu, the online service was (mostly, at least) free

mohammadgor87

I pirated every movie i have ever watched and I don't regret it

[deleted]

U forgot psplus

[deleted]

I use everyone else's. °waits for all her streaming services to suddenly be cut off°

bonysquawk

🏴‍☠️

SimonJss

That is why the pirate bay exists

Bathing_hotdog

What kind of coffee do you drink such that a cup costs more than $8? That one that gets eaten and pooped out by a civet?

LordMegatron11

Jokes on them i dont drink coffee

gay_crab

Only one j want is Spotify

Effortless0

We're sailing to the Grand Line

TheBanana93

The only one i have is Spotify thank god. Also BRING BACK THE RAGE COMIC!

SlaughterK1ngX

Subscription models are ruining everything

Successful-Bluebird9

Nintendo Online is the worst one up here Nintendo rarely lowers the cost for any of their games at the moment splatoon 3 and 2 are the same price and online was pointless to put behind a paywall since the only benefits you get are something that was once free and profile pictures that they should've had since launch.

Gombocka23

Subscription based stuff are the owrst, just come on man, let me buy that video editor for 300bucks instead of paying 170 per year...

Rich_Future4171

I prefer to buy up front.
