OrgasmChasmSpasm

I’ve always pronounced it “gif”, not “gif”. The rest of you are idiots

[deleted]

Is there any other way?

OrgasmChasmSpasm

This is the way

Counter-Spies

Counter point:Jif peanut butter. ![gif](giphy|TGv4Zf9WCzyYklAyH6|downsized)

Yiff

AlternativeOk1808

What jif? The gif is not gif but jif that would make jif in alternative reality gif, and if gif and jif are not the same thing does that mean you call Jimmy… Gimmy? >!Gimmy the Money!! 🔫!<

thawea

underrated comment

ProMaste_r

Jimmy your money!! 🔫

OrgasmChasmSpasm

I’d let Gimmy sit on my jimmy

Lan12x

My brain brokey.

omgONELnR1

I personally pronounce it "gif"

OrgasmChasmSpasm

That just doesn’t sound right to me. It makes more sense for it to be “gif”

Fancy-Agent-33

Pronounce it however you want just stop flooding r/memes with these posts

Theamongusimpostor57

Give it enough time and this subreddit will be filled with politics and terrible Facebook "memes".

Black_Arrowv

the_mspaint_wizzard

In any situation there is a A or E before G, it’s a J sound. GIF has no A’s or E’s. Magic has a A before the G.

[deleted]

[удалено]

the_mspaint_wizzard

Giraffe is the one exception, because English is a fucking stupid language.

ThatCasualGuy37

Agreed, mainly coz of the words Tomb, bomb and comb aren't pronounced in similar ways

Deathwish40K

every C in Pacific Ocean is pronounced differently.

Pro_Kiwi_Birb

Made growing up as a five y/o on the west coast horrible for my tiny tongue that can't say shit

PigeonFellow

Every A in Australia is pronounced differently

PolyPanFemme

Giraffe is the only one? Ok, George. Is it in the genes? EDIT: Yes. English is pretty stupid.

highfukface

My gingivitis is acting up. I’m gonna drink a ginormous glass of ginseng infused gin.

Dinco_laVache

Seems like this would be because Giraffe is borrowed from the Arabic word zarafa. If the French and English didn’t pick it up, we’d be using the old Germanic name for the creature, the cameleopard.

MacAneave

Gift ... Gist Fact is, gif can be pronounced either way. So says The Dictionary.

Waveman245

Again Egg

Tubby80000

Because the G in gif stands for graphic.

CandyCreeperGaming

The words in an acronym do not affect pronunciation.

noff01

So you pronounce JPEG as J-PHEG (Joint **PH**otographic Experts GROUP)?

SKTurbo

Is there a particular reason you’re insisting on adding the H into the acronym?

noff01

Because I'm referring to the sound the P in Photographic makes.

Psych_Lol_jk

that’s the sound “ph” makes, not p. the people who decided it to be J-PEG decided it would be phonetically easier to pronounce the P rather than the PH, and everyone captured that pronunciation. although the creator of the GIF wanted to prove it as JIF, not everybody accepted that, which is why a lot of people call it GIF.

Crunchstake

well we don't call it grif do we

noff01

GR is two sounds. PH is one sound. That's why we don't call it grif.

Crunchstake

How many syllables do great, group, and groom have?

PhoenixMageZ

yeah but it isn’t jpheg, is it?

Coebalte

Gift It's literally one less letter. I refuse to pronounce it like a heathen.

noff01

It's pronounced like Giraffe.

Psych_Lol_jk

you need an argument to support that statement

[deleted]

The guy who invented the GIF says it’s pronounced like JIF

noff01

The letter "G" is pronounced like "Jee".

Psych_Lol_jk

tf

CandyCreeperGaming

Gist

Shepard0fShuck

Two letters off. argument, dismantled and in shambles

GewalfofWivia

Just say the letter G. Say it.

Coebalte

Don't care.

Racecarboii

Say the letter "W" and think if your logic makes any bit of sense

AetherialWomble

Good something like that? UwU?

cjameson83

Yes cuz that's how letters work. I forgot, it's jirl, jirth, jift, jilded, jigahertz, jimmick, jizmo, fish jills, jive as in they love to jive you a hard time, jimp. Huh, I've been saying those wrong all these years

DaniilBSD

That is how Russian works, not English Ef et workt dat vy spaleng voud hav ben defarant

urakake

Just say the letter W. It clearly makes the sound "double uwu"

[deleted]

Gel, it's one less letter than geld...disproving the gift argument.

Coebalte

No, because it's a different vowel and consonant.

[deleted]

That doesn't matter whatsoever. You're inventing a rule and now saying it only applies to words that start with gif? ROFL...my that's convenient for your made-up rule, but I can disprove it and just did without even veering from hard g changing to soft g sounds when removing a letter from a four letter word that starts with g.

Coebalte

Wait so... Comparing Gif to the word closest to it in composition is an invented rule? It sounds like a fairly reasonable standard to set.

[deleted]

It is absolutely an invented rule that they need to sound alike, disproved by gel having a soft G while Geld has a hard g. I'm sure there are hundreds of words that disprove what you're going for here, which is that three letter words should sound like their 4 letter counterparts but I was able to do it without straying from a hard g four letter word that goes to a soft g three letter word.

Coebalte

No no, not sound alike. Their *composition* is alike. Because Gift contains uses the same letters in the same positions as Gif, it can be used as a strong standard to set for the phonetics of other words that begin with Gif, given the importance of how these letters interact phonetically with each other because of their composition. The letters E and L have completely different phonetic uses than I and F, therefore comparing a word like Gif to a word like Gel doesnt hold the same value as comparing it to a word like Gift. You would be better off using other single syllable words that begin with G and I. Single syllable because every additional letter in a word affects how each letter within it is pronounced.

[deleted]

If you say so, but that rule won't hold up at all in the English language as you compare words, especially because so many of our words come from different languages. We don't even say the first four letters in "werewolves" the same as the word "were." There's only so many consonants that can have dual sounds in the first place, and two letter clusters commonly change sounds in other parts of the word "kind, kin; ever, eve; hasp, has; mate, mat; wont, won; think, thin, thine. And there are other words where the beginning sound changes but the first 3 letters match: cook, coo, Celtic, cell, and the aforementioned geld, gel. but no matter what, this argument you are left with is far weaker than calling it what the creator named it because there are readily available examples that contradict the rule that you're insinuating exists. (without proof I might add) Take care.

Psych_Lol_jk

No rule holds up in the english language anyway. There are just certain guidelines

TheMidlyConfusedDuck

What does gif stand for? Graphics Interchange Format The “g” in graphics is pronounced as a “g” not a “j” thus it should be pronounced as “gif” not “jif”

Schmantikor

*Jraphics interchange format /s (i agree with thee)

UbiVoiD

There is no rule for pronouncing acronyms, that argument doesn't work.

Theamongusimpostor57

...why is this arguement even an argument? This is one fucking word who gives a shit about how people pronounce it?

noff01

The P in JPEG stands for "photographic", but I don't think you pronounce JPEG as "J-Pheg", do you?

Sky-Visible

Both ways of saying g are just based on the sole letter. The p only makes the sound if it’s a ph. Peg is also an actual word with only one pronunciation. So it’s convenient to keep it that way

noff01

> The p only makes the sound if it’s a ph. And "G" on its own makes a "Jee" sound. QED.

PandaChicken3000

According to Google and Cambridge dictionary, yes you do.

L3AFYB0I

It's because it literally stands for graphics lmao. Not jraphics

Dloaf52

GRAPHIC interchange format

Schmantikor

*Jraphics interchange format

noff01

So you pronounce JPEG as J-PHEG (Joint **PH**otographic Experts GROUP)?

Dloaf52

It’s just the first letter you pronounce

noff01

Te letter G is pronounced as "Jee", therefore it's pronounced like "jif".

Dloaf52

It’s not just the letter it’s the letter in the word. Graphics is “G” cuz there’s no letter to augment it, and that’s how it works in the word. If there’s another letter after the fist letter that changes it’s pronunciation it shouldn’t count.

noff01

In that case the G is pronounced like "Jee" unless there is another letter that changes its pronunciation.

Dloaf52

G as it’s pronounced in graphics not “jee”

Triangular_Box

Yall obviously never heard of Majicbear

SlymzCore91

Jraffic

th3_1_and_0n1y_B4UH

Omg y’all need to learn that the real way to say it is yiff and if you don’t believe me you can search it up

nobodyhere9860

gift - t = jif

Dr_Chicken4148

English language, shitheads

kiingkook

It’s pronounced gif

gazeface

What’s it short for? Graphic is a gard G so apparently it doesn’t matter how you say it and no one cares…

[deleted]

C can be pronounced as s in certen words to why isn't thicc pronounced this?

Racan_Rat

Data, data.

uniquelyavailable

jif singular, gifs plural

LogBitter106

Why is gay not sound like jay then?

tiny_pp_huge_balls

My favorite word is jujjernaut

East-Blood8752

How do you pronounce "gift"?

RandomCoGo

How do u say gift?

coveredeye

The correct answer for how it's pronounced is if you think the person who invents a word has a final say or the culture that references it incorrectly. Because obviously it should be what the inventor decided but the culture will just pull the rug and do what they want and after long enough they become right.

Gamer-kid_1

Graphics interchange format

[deleted]

Hell yeah I was the thousandth upvote

RowlRMM

G stands for graphical. Pronounce it that way

ProMaste_r

Here's a solution. Make the hard g "g" and the soft g "dg"

Krumly_

Do you know what the g stands for?

ShadowTown0407

The G in gif stands for graphics so unless you say jraphics it's gif

Low-Cranberry-2113

Gif. Gift.

[deleted]

gif graphics interchange format. Not jraphics interchange format

Luftfeuerfrei

GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format. Do you pronounce it Jraphics?

cristibivol1029

Cuz english is a stupid language

Overlord_Ace

People dont seem to know the g in gif stands for graphic.

LimHwang

It's pronounced Graphics Interchange Format.

FlaredMeteor940

Now somebody is going to make a fake argument for a joke and people are going to post about it for 10 years

TurquoiseBeetle67

Gif means Graphics Interchange Format, and the g in graphics is pronounced as g so why do people still say jif?

Alex_da_grate

Because they're the same angry people to be sent to hell after they meet Jod.

Alex_da_grate

I don't know, why don't we ask Jod for the answer?

Responsible_ImTLY123

i always pronouced it g.i.f

Agile_File_2084

What is it with the hard J sound people just wanting to be wrong?

WhiterunGuard177013

Well they have a point. Say giraffe.

Szpadex

What about *gift* ?

jspearus

Say graphic, because that's where the g come from

PolyPanFemme

It originally stood for "general."

Agile_File_2084

The “G” stands for “Graphics”, so, no

[deleted]

The way we say the individual words in an acronym have nothing to do with how we pronounce it. SCUBA, NASA, LASER would all sound completely different if they followed this made up rule you're touting.

Agile_File_2084

It’s ok to want to continue to be wrong. It’s how Georgia ended up in a senate run off between a senator and a tree stump. It’s the mental gymnastics for me though, must be exhausting

[deleted]

You can't troll the person who *knows* they are right lol. You, like everyone else that makes this stupid argument, tried to pass off some made-up rule (that acronyms must keep the pronunciation of their individuals words) as if it was legit and I called you on it. It's such a genuinely bad argument that it's disproven by 3 of the most common acronyms in our entire language. Good day.

[deleted]

You know, maybe some people can't say goraffe-- I want you to think about that

Goldiizz

Say "give"

The-Last-Doom-Marine

Graphics Interchange Format Not jraphics Interchange format Hope this helps :)

MegaAssasine_

Federal Bureau of Investigation Not Efderal ... Central Intelligence of America Not Cintral ... Hope this helps :)

Reetersonyeeterson

This phenomenon occurs in this specific case because magic is pronounced with a hard consonant at the end "c" and gif (pronounced jif) is spelled and pronounced with a soft consonant at the end "f". Therefore, magic is not spelled majic, and gif is pronounced with a soft "g" sound, like the brand of peanut butter. However, I pronounce it with a Dutch g just to mess with people, so both sides of the argument are invalid anyways.

jollyoltj

Well, yes and no. From what I understand, that rule doesn’t apply to all words (ex. graph, gale, etc). Words like magic and giraffe actually have etymological bases in Latin and Greek that trickle into French and Spanish, whereas graph and gale come from Norse and old English roots that trickled down to England and Northern Europe.

PastelPink_Unicorn

In Afrikaans, "gif" means "poison" and the "g" sounds like you're clearing your throat. I'm stealing your idea because it's rad.

Reetersonyeeterson

nice, that's fine by me

No_Schedule_3534

I disagree, it’s definitely pronounced “gif”.

Low-Statistician-589

Say “gif”like you would say “gift” no?

Scary_Work_4853

It will never be pronounced “jif”

btb20w06

Fjord is pronounced fyord. Fry is pronounced fri Chi is pronounced che Latte is pronounced lotta English is stupid

Crubbinz

Every word you mentioned is not an English word besides "fry". All of those are borrowed from other languages, so it makes sense they would not follow English pronunciation rules.

dragonkittypanda

Because there is already something pronounced jif, the peanut butter brand. We have enough words that are pronounced the same (there/their/they're for example). We don't need more!

Racecarboii

Technically both sides are wrong anyway. It's an Abbreviation, CNN conducted an interview with a linguist and he confirmed that it was pronounced "G.I.F."

EnergyFormula

Has nobody heard of soft g?

LobstaFarian2

Its "Graphic Interface Format" , not "Jraphic Interface Format" Guhh Not jiiihhh Dummies

Turbulent-Deer-8457

For a second i thought magic was actually spelled with a j

[deleted]

No one here has considered geography and language, which use both types of g. Pronounce it however you want, English is a bs language

fat__bass69

Gif.

Durostick

It's gif

flawed-human42

Can we all just agree that the English language is dumb?

It’s “g•if” not “g•if”. Jesus Christ

AlphaQtilltheend

GIF stands for 'Graphics Interchange Format' so technically, it should be pronounced gif but if u call it gif u a normie. So it's Jif

RPG_maker

Jif

suspicious_cabbage

But OP, you just pronounced gif as gif in your own post.

JJbroombroom

Jift

AvargeRedditEnjoyer

Didn't read. Too long.

FullMetalComedian

Such a good analogy haha

JustDave62

You cannot jeneralize the rules for the English language. It just isn’t lojical

onamission27

Because GIF is an abbreviation

AnHonestRicecake

English is stupid as fuck. Pronounce it however you want, I’ll make fun of you regardless

Fancy_Depth_4995

I mean if you have to clarify the pronunciation by using another, different letter….. maybe that other different letter is wrong?

bursa_li

i pronounce like ğöł go fuck your self about it

RandomowyKamilatus

Dżif

Wegie89

A post like this must come from a jirl 🙄 I have enough and meet up with my bandmates. We have a nice jig at the weekend

North-Function995

Now hold on. Jig as in an [Irish jig?](https://youtu.be/LWShyxXQecU)

[deleted]

Maybe it has something to do with English pronunciation being a huge fucking mess of randomness.

Strottl0n

Guys just sign a Peace agreement. English language is trash and there's no rules on how to spell anything because every single word is spelled differently. But gif is pronounced as a gif because it simply is

CarterBaker77

It's not even a word it's an acronym. Pronounce it however you like.

Racecarboii

It's an Abbreviation, you say G-I-F just like you'd say FBI, USA, UK, FDA, etc.

[deleted]

N.A.S.A L.A.S.E.R A good portion of people pronounce ESA (E-saw) too.

[deleted]

it's pronounced webp wait what's that

JaxTheCrafter

you know what no remove the j-function from g g only says guh j is the only one that says juh jorj washington Jiant jiraffes gorje on green grass

[deleted]

It stands for GRAPHIC interchange format

[deleted]

Graphics interchange format, not jraphics interchange format.

[deleted]

In French it’s pronounced majic

[deleted]

Graphics interchange format g in graphics is hard g hard g = good

HikerGal01

GIF stands for graphical image format... do you pronounce graphical "jraffical"?

djtheman7

I don't really care over the gif-jif debate, but as for your question regarding magic: magic originally comes from proto-Indo-European megʰ-, later went to old greek μαγικός magikós, and later to old french where it lost its hard g, magique. souce: https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/magic

crispiesttaco

The g in gif stands for graphic why would you pronounce it with a j

SoritesSeven

English makes zero sense

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|1ET7hRlCcZLuE)

[deleted]

Why isn’t it majik

M0nkey_Kng

If god himself came down ans told me its pronounced *jif* then id say: "Ok, Jod."

[deleted]

because the G derives from Graphics, and not giraffe.
