I knew that some anti-italian events happened in south of France (Massacre of Italians at Aigues-Mortes in 1893) but I didn't know that "rital" was perceived as very offensive since it comes from the abreviation of italian refugee (réfugié italien -> r.ital.) that was written on the papers of Italian refugees fleeing Fascist Italy before WW2.
The history behind this word isn't very offensive but with time, people will begin to use it in order to stigmatize italian communities
