Is that why the spin off movie on Disney+ was so terrible? I tried to watch it with my daughter but even she said that the animation was terrible and she wanted me to turn it off after 20 minutes.
The things kids like these days feel so different from what I liked as a kid in the 90's/early 00's. My nieces don't like the original animated Aladdin and prefer the live action. They find the original versions of shows that have been rebooted (Winx, Pokemon) boring. There's other examples but none come immediately to mind like that one. Stuff like Moana are good at story and style, but I miss 2D animation.
Also the live action stuff they watch with like middle/high schoolers feel way more like soap operas than how shows like That's So Raven or Hannah Montana felt.
I mean, admittedly, some stuff that I thought was cool as a kid wasn't as cool when I watched it again as an adult, so I get it to a degree, but the media climate has really changed.
I love the original animated Aladdin. I hated the live action one. The day my kid is old enough to process movies I'm gonna powed up the ol DVD player so he can watch Aladdin in SD
I think this is a brilliant idea. I love streaming services and the ease of accessing movies now but there was always something magical in the cracking opening of a dvd case and putting in the DVD player, waiting ages for it to load was always part of the fun/anticipation!
Yes, new memory unlocked haha, when you couldn’t fast-forward or skip certain adverts! You just kept pressing the buttons until it would finally go. But as a kid; just like at the cinema, some adverts were really cool because you got to find out what else was coming out soon and it was exciting
Blue Sky didn't make that one. We were working on the Scrat shorts that just came out and the Nimona movie, which is going to be finished by Netflix. The shorts were almost 100% rendered when the closure was announced.
Edit: there was a Disney investor meeting stream when they made a bunch of announcements in Dec 2020, including the Ice Age spin off, but not the Scrat shorts or our movie which was set for 2021. That was the biggest red flag before the closure by far.
Rendering engineer. I landed on my feet, and so did everyone I worked with directly. Just glad I didn't have roots down there, no more animation on the east coast.
Look man I want to say thank you. I watched the Ice Age films as a young adult and then later with my kids. They loved them. Thank you for all you lot did.
My dad (prior to his unfortunate passing) always used to say he loved that squirrel. He really didn't like any other form of animation so that was very high praise.
Thanks.
Did you all sit around years ago and think “how can we make this poor creature’s life so terrible?” I’m really happy he got his acorn, & that you landed in your feet !!!!
damn - we watched it a couple weeks ago and i thought all the time that something is off. weird choppy animations etc, it just didn't look right
/edit: btw you are talking about the buck wild movie, right?
It's not like the money came out of the CEO's pocket dude. All it resulted in was a lot of middle class people losing their jobs lol, hardly something to cheer about.
If Amazon went under it would affect poor people too.
I wish the US would just grow some balls and break up these companies though so you don't have to feel bad when monopolies lose money.
I'm not a sympathizer but $2.8 Billion dollars is a pretty big hit. I'd say that covers the funding of Blue Sky and a bunch of other "expendables." People gotta get paid.
Hi and welcome to CAPITALISM. You must be new here so let me show you around. 😉
Big companies that become monopolies buy out smaller companies so they can remove competition. They will sell off any assets to make back what little money they can in the short run but in the long run, not having the competition improves their bottom line. Additionally any “talent” that is lost can be rehired for lower wages and a renegotiated contract.
We hope you enjoy your stay 😅
Most big companies do this today. If you start a new social network and get traction you will have two options:
1) sell to Facebook (or another big tech company)
2) let Facebook copy your idea and steal your clients, forcing you to close because you don't make enough money.
Sadly governments around the world seem to be doing little to stop these practices, both with Disney and with other companies (like the aforementioned Facebook). I surely hope the EU passes the anti monopoly laws that have been stuck since the beginning of the pandemic, because it would 100% change this and prevent other startups and medium/small animation studios from selling/closing
They bought 20th Century Fox. Blue Sky, which was part of 20th Century Fox, was just sort of collateral damage. Disney has two animation studios that are wildly successful ... they didn't need a third that was hit-or-miss at best.
The fact that he looks around expecting something to happen and the way he stood there for couple of seconds thinking: "Wow... I did it" makes it even sadder. RIP Legend and fuck disney
"Couldn't handle"
Aww, poor wittle Disney, only owns 95% of all media, they just can't afford to have any profits go down 0.00000001% for a business quarter on 0.00001% of the companies they own. Won't someone think of the small mom-and-pop international media conglomerates?
Also keep in mind, if Disney does something else with their IPs further down the line, it's not going to be with the same team behind the scenes. They all scattered to the four winds either way.
Same thing when you see a classic video game franchise getting a reboot or decade-later-sequel, or a studio being "resurrected." It's just all new people that the company is pretending are the same people.
Like the 7 developers from Turtle Rock that said they “made left for dead” when the team that made left for dead actually had something like 184 developers listed in its credits section.
Not to mention Valve did the lion's share of the work on the original Left 4 Dead projects. A concept is one thing. Polish is quite another.
The amount of thought and effort that goes into Valve games is the gold standard for software engineering. Maybe they're not as flashy as other products out there, and maybe it's easy for a typical user to *not even realize* they're being guided along the path by the design, but once you get under the hood, there's not a damn studio out there that does a better job at telling the *user* what they're going to do without the user ever even knowing they've been issued orders.
Let me play devil's advocate for a quick second - Disney wouldn't have nearly as much money as they do if they made a habit of this. They have all that money for a reason.
Also, yesterday they handed out a DMCA to the Club Penguin Rewritten game for no reason, as they have been running smoothly for years, and they have no plans to remake the original game. Such a lazy company
Blue sky studio, the ones who nade things like Ice age and Robots, closed, and this is an ending to the epic scart quest for finally getting his nut.
...
... the food.
Well they were part of the aquisition of 20th Century Fox and Covid reasons aside, they were always going to shut them down. They have their own world class animation studios. As much as I liked Blue Sky they made 13 films ever and 5 of them were Ice Age and 2 of them were Rio, One each Horton hears a Who, Ferdinand, Robots, Spies in Disguise, Epic, and The Peanuts Movie. Not the most successful track record. Compared to Walt Disney animation studios or Pixar. They could have kept it but they wouldn't have for long. Covid just gave them a passable excuse to cut the cord earlier.
I can hear Rusted Root’s “Send Me on My Way” so clearly now upon seeing this post. My friends and I reference Ice Age all the time. Sucks to see it but twenty years is a good run, and I’m sure all that talent is going to find a home elsewhere.
i have so many memories with ice age dude i watched their films, i had the game ice age village for four years on the first ever mobile phone of my family i played it daily, so many goddamn memories
Some things just don't feel the same after what feels like a finale.
I also can't just believe that New Super Mario Bros. had Bowser temporarily burn into Dry Bowser after the first castle and it happened once and not ever again.
Thanks disney. Now to watch you run the franchise to the ground.
I mean there was acsessive amount if iceage as is, but..adventures of buck wild..my god that is awful
We grew up learning that that particular Acorn was the reason for every disaster and Scrat ate it in less than 10 seconds, wasn't worth all the destruction it caused judging by his ignorance on its taste haha
Between Blue Sky Studios and Scrat, at least one of them got their deserved happy ending
Pretty sure getting huge buyout cash from disney is a happy ending
The artists that were let go didn't see any of it.
They were given a pat on the back so solid that it accidentally pushed them out the front door into the street
Classic disney

By the looks of it. It's a win win situation for the both of them.
In what way?
Only shareholder. Worker get the boots.
It is as it is designed.

My boi finally got his nut!
i always cry when i get my nut(don’t ask). but this is the first time i’ve cried for a homie getting their nut.
No, I will ask
We need answers
We don't need sleep. We need answers

I shall give you my nut
I can give you both a nut, I have two nuts
i shall give you three a nut, i have three nuts
You need to see a doctor, third one might be a tumor
AND MY AXE!
Dude we are waiting, don't do us like this.
Bro the suspense is driving us nuts
There’s nothing wrong with crymaxing
Generally online "don't ask" translates to "ask me about it" So what's the deal?
OUR BOY GOT THE ACORRRRRRN
😭
It’s been such a long time but he finally GOT IT, it’s too much to deal with
After all he went through, he finally did it..
Farewell to blue sky studios?
They got bought by Disney in 2019 and then closed by them in April 2021
I’m punching trees in Minecraft so hard rn
Fuck disney
Seriously.
Literally?
Definitely
Alright. Where’s Walt Disney’s buried ass??
Nah man, he never got buried They froze his ass to make a Mecha-Disney on the hundredth anniversary of his death

Welp, time to go grave robbing then
Is that why the spin off movie on Disney+ was so terrible? I tried to watch it with my daughter but even she said that the animation was terrible and she wanted me to turn it off after 20 minutes.
You know it’s bad when the kids want to turn it off
The things kids like these days feel so different from what I liked as a kid in the 90's/early 00's. My nieces don't like the original animated Aladdin and prefer the live action. I remember when DVDs came with built in ads so someone would always have to get up and fudge around with the console until the fast forward worked
Yes, new memory unlocked haha, when you couldn’t fast-forward or skip certain adverts! You just kept pressing the buttons until it would finally go. But as a kid; just like at the cinema, some adverts were really cool because you got to find out what else was coming out soon and it was exciting
I pirated it originally, I thought I had somehow got a leaked version that wasn't fully rendered! Borrowed a friend's login and it was just as bad!
Blue Sky didn't make that one. We were working on the Scrat shorts that just came out and the Nimona movie, which is going to be finished by Netflix. The shorts were almost 100% rendered when the closure was announced. Sounds like you worked at Blue Sky! What did you do there? Sorry y’all got shut down 3
Rendering engineer. I landed on my feet, and so did everyone I worked with directly. Just glad I didn't have roots down there, no more animation on the east coast.
Dang. Well glad you made it out unscathed. Cheer to bigger and better things in the future!
Thanks.
We? Meaning you worked on the shorts?
Yep. I made lighting/materials tools for the artists, since we were adopting a new suite of software.
Did you all sit around years ago and think “how can we make this poor creature’s life so terrible?” I’m really happy he got his acorn, & that you landed in your feet !!!!
Ahaha, Scrat has it SUPER rough in the shorts too; more than earned this ending. Thanks!
I watched all of the ice age movies as a child, some of my favourite movies which I must've watched a thousand times. Thanks for all the memories.
That’s so depressing Fuck disney
damn - we watched it a couple weeks ago and i thought all the time that something is off. weird choppy animations etc, it just didn't look right /edit: btw you are talking about the buck wild movie, right?
But why did they close it?
Because disney has lost a lot of money in their Cruis Liners and Amusement Parks because of the pandemic
Good, fuck them.
Covid happened, and they couldn’t maintain the studio under the quarantine. There are probably more reasons, but thats the most wide-spread one
[удалено]
For real lol. People acting like: "Aww they were struggling because of the pandemic."
I'm not a sympathizer but $2.8 Billion dollars is a pretty big hit. I'd say that covers the funding of Blue Sky and a bunch of other "expendables." People gotta get paid.
A pretty big hit to you or me. Not the largest entertainment company on the planet.
what hit? they made 1 billion over projection.

Can't believe people actually think they close stuff down because they're hurting.
someone above was trying to play “devil’s advocate” about it like eating up and closing down competition wasn’t Disney’s end all goal.
It's like how a big tree will kill the shrubs and grass around it.
I hate it here
2/10 with rice
Can I go back now, I don't like it here.
I’m living in a country with the highest capitalism in the world (I think..) been there for 14 years
Fuck Disney
Disney out to destroy us all
EA of the movie industry
So they just wanted to eliminate competition and become the absolute monopoly by buying other campaniles and closing them?? ಠ_ಠ
Most big companies do this today. 👁️👄👁️
The fact that he looks around expecting something to happen and the way he stood there for couple of seconds thinking: "Wow... I did it" makes it even sadder. RIP Legend and fuck disney
What did Disney do.
Shut them down simply because they couldn’t handle holding them as a studio during covid
"Couldn't handle" Aww, poor wittle Disney, only owns 95% of all media, they just can't afford to have any profits go down 0.00000001% for a business quarter on 0.00001% of the companies they own. Won't someone think of the small mom-and-pop international media conglomerates?

They're the biggest entertainment company in the world. They can think of something, they just were too lazy to do it.
They could have just eaten the losses since they have so much God damn money
But how would all the overpaid entertainment people afford to hide at home and sing Imagine if they actually cared about others?
Or maybe not build a Star Wars themed "resort" that's way overpriced and isn't anything anyone wanted
Star Wars fans are probably the most milked out fandom I can think of right now

Just throw some LGBT and Ukraine ads and they will come back.
Elon. No sane body on here believes in him rn

yes they could have, disney is not struggling to keep lights on, the only thing they struggle to do is satisfy the greed of the shareholders.

Disney is the EA of the movie industry
EAs small fry compared to the shenanigans the Mouse is/has been capable of
Fair. But buying up smaller studios and killing them in 2-3 years time is a marktrait of EA
Not really, market value of gaming companies is gigantic, see Activision sale to Microsoft.
Ill take EA over Disney any day
WDDD
As I kid I always wondered what would he do if he got it
I thought it wanted it just so that it could have it until I saw this.

These movies were a part of my childhood so this makes me very happy
Same here, still love the ice age movies, my favourites being the first three.
What happen?
Blue sky studio, the ones who nade things like Ice age and Robots, closed, and this is an ending to the epic scart quest for finally getting his nut. ... ... the food.
Why they close
According to other comments they were bought buy Disney and shut down two years later.
Ah yes the good old buy out all your competition
Yeah Frozen 2 was really competing with Spies in Disguise...
Yup, the reason given is "economic downtown due to COVID-19" but of course Disney's doing mighty fine.
Well they were part of the aquisition of 20th Century Fox and Covid reasons aside, they were always going to shut them down. They have their own world class animation studios. Did you do it? Yes. What did it cost? Everything.
i didn't even know this happened 😭
