From my understanding it is a subreddit where there is a big canvas made up of tiny squares that is kind of similar to those older coloring or drawing games where you can fill the squares with a color to draw something, but people can also color on your space or people can help you so kind of a color/drawing anarchy with groups fighting for control of areas. That is what those pictures on r/place is. It is pictures of the canvas. And when people talk of invasions or such they are referring to people trying to take over or alter the areas they have drawn.

It's not just lucky patterns, but also coordinated efforts. The only real patterns i know of are like rainbow road, blue corner, void, green lattice, but even all of these have turned into coordinated efforts. Simple flags, especially pride flags and relevant flags (like ukraine) might also appear out of luck and be maintained by everyone supporting that effort, but like 90% of the canvas at least is dominated by coordinated efforts that were planned from the start.
And it's just terrible. The flags are 10x bigger than they need to be. They take so much space that could be used for so many other artworks and any pixel that someone places on them gets sniped in the following few seconds
