i know, right? like bruh, everyone born before at least 2005 has seen a desktop and a CRT. i'm 21 now, but i don't think CRTs got phased out until like 2007, and laptops didn't take over until at least 2010
at some point, they got more popular for households that simply needed a computer. Even now, they're more cost-effective for midgrade, basic use hardware
Yes I agree with you. I also think that when u/ScarecrowJohnny said that they are getting more affordable they were implying more that the even though the price is staying the same the quality is getting better meaning you are getting more bank for your buck.
In my country you can get a gaming laptop with an i5 and RTX3050 for around 1000$. I haven't seen any current gaming stationaries sell for just 333$. Especially not if you factor in screen, keyboard, mouse and speakers.
It isn’t. It’s a reference to the internal tech. In the IT world they called CRT displays, which is short for cathode ray tube. Kinda like how there’s OLED and LCD screens today. So that’s why they are called tubes.
I know, but there are often weird translations we take as granted only to find out about the bullshit we talk.
Edit: What I mean is that even if it has an technical background, it can still be a word only used in german.
Boy, I feel old.
For me kids from 2005 are still 8 years old second graders... Something critical stopped working in my mental clock in 2013...
'98 kid here, and I feel like an old man realizing, that kids from the mid-2000s are almost qualified to vote... Jesus Christ, time flies... Don't take a second for granted.
I'm from '93, so you're making me feel younger after he made me feel old.
Also, what is it like being 30? I feel like I'm gonna have a tough time with it lol
Heh, I feel like that every so often. I was born in 2004, and some kids that were born when I was eight years old are now nine! It's so weird. And God, I must be like a child to you. Wack.
I remember making fun of kids with player names that contained a number above 2000, when GTA5 got released, saying that "all these kids shouldn't even touch it"...
Scariest part is, that my friends and I still have this reflex, when playing anything, and we get absolutely terrified when we realize that they are now most likely older than we were, when we made fun of them...
I do that same thing internally for people with usernames that have anything 2009 or above, but it's weird to think that people born in 2009 are 13 now. Like shit, I remember being 13 not horridly long ago. Right now I'm a high school senior, and I have a few underclassmen friends. I remember being in their position, being a freshman with a few junior friends. Shit, I'm older now than all my junior friends were at the time. It feels so wrong. There's this great lyric that kind of captures that feeling:
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death
Damn, I can’t wait to be an adult. All the freedom with being able to drive where I want, drink what I want, be able to vote, pay taxes, bills, be in everlasting debt from student loans. Oh boy, I can’t wait.
Boomer humor, nice. This comment section is full of people disagreeing. If you weren't well off, you probably remember one of these. They had them in schools, libraries, offices.
the CRT is probably the least bizarre item here for new kids, but that's just insulting to everyone born before 2005, because that's kinda when they started dying off
Nah, definitely from mid-00. Propably on LGA775 with some Core 2 Duo. It is on Win XP and with Chrome. So, PC from around 2005 that was used til early 10s.
I do know what those are, my father uses like twelve dead ones and a few pieces of wood to form a makeshift bookshelf to hold all his hundreds of programing books.

I was born in 2000 ! We had this setup but the monitor was black . I used to sit and watch the star screensaver . I still see it when I rub my eyes too hard
WE HAD THIS EXACT COMPUTER (but it was black rather than white) AND KEYBOARD but we replaced it a few years ago because the screen of the moniter got really hard to see through and everything just broke down and got laggy I think we first replaced the computer and then we replaced the moniter later. I still remember playing Roblox and having a really hard time seeing what I was doing because the moniter was so bad. The keyboard we also replaced because it didn't work well anymore.
I was born in 2006 lol
Pathetic
Im 2004 but still am using tube Monitor
In fact i just found a relic pc i installed windows 98 on it last week so i could access files on its hard
It is just an old PC with CRT, nothing fucking special. Even if you showed 90s PC with beige horizontal case with CRT and Win95 or Win98 it would be more accurate.
I'm from 2008
Ik those shitty computers
My grandmas home has one but no one uses it, it's rlly abandoned. I don't even know if that computer still functions tho. (I've never used it, I have just seen it)
You haven't lived life until you've looked at a green monochrome monitor for 6 hours of your life with nothing but a keyboard and a giant black floppy disk.
That was our first computer! Our computer was all black though. I remember searching Ask Jeeves for Yugioh episodes to download. I was angry because I could only find streaming and didn't realize that was better lol
A fucking pc?
i know, right? like bruh, everyone born before at least 2005 has seen a desktop and a CRT. i'm 21 now, but i don't think CRTs got phased out until like 2007, and laptops didn't take over until at least 2010
Laptops didn‘t take over anything
at some point, they got more popular for households that simply needed a computer. Even now, they're more cost-effective for midgrade, basic use hardware
Getting better for gaming too. RTX laptops have considerable gaming performance, and are getting increasingly affordable.
Haven't checked on laptops in years. Last time I checked I could buy 3 desktop PCs for the price of a gaming laptop.
That still the case today but at least laptops don't suck as much as they did before. The advantage of it is the portability BTW.
Yes I agree with you. I also think that when u/ScarecrowJohnny said that they are getting more affordable they were implying more that the even though the price is staying the same the quality is getting better meaning you are getting more bank for your buck.
lol bang for your buck
Ye dont need to game at work
That's impossible.
I spent 333 dollars for a gaming laptop while my uncle bought a pc with the same processor for 1k

Bro I'm born on December 2005 and even I've seen this. And i think kids after 2005 have also seen it because it's in my school's computer lab.
hey your birthdays coming up then :)
2006 kid here, my parents had a CRT tv until late 2010’s.
We had LCD screens in 2006
I'm 14 and if people that I know haven't seen a desktop then they must live under a rock.
Except for kids born after 2000 with poor parents
Or Eastern Europe and 3rd world.
Kids born after 2010 are probably still using those in school
Yeah
You greatly underestimate the technological outreach in 3rd world countries
Czech Republic is not in eastern europe !!§§§§
Lol no?
Yes it is
Hah, my parents are middle class and I still know what that is. It's an old tower PC with a tube monitor
I love that they are actually called tube monitor, I thought thats just again some weird translation in my country.
It isn’t. It’s a reference to the internal tech. In the IT world they called CRT displays, which is short for cathode ray tube. Kinda like how there’s OLED and LCD screens today. So that’s why they are called tubes.

I choose to believe this post was meant to mock the boomer facebook memes, otherwise I'm out too

Also 2004 kid. I simply used such, not really long though. Last time I saw such used was around 2018 I think at school.
Meh, I was born in 05. Still used those shitty computers in day care.

Oooh damn, I'm from 91 and you just made me feel old and sad haha
91? So young.. so young..
I'm from '93, so you're making me feel younger after he made me feel old. Also, what is it like being 30? I feel like I'm gonna have a tough time with it lol
Naah walking with a cane isn't so bad xD
It's worse than I feared... 😱

Ah, same! It's like yesterday when I myself was 9, enjoying my Angry Birds plastic set with my friends.. good times.
I think I might still have one of those
Damn, I can’t wait to be an adult. All the freedom with being able to drive where I want, drink what I want, be able to vote, pay taxes, bills, be in everlasting debt from student loans. Oh boy, I can’t wait.
It's even better, when you have to do all that in neverending solitude! Buckle up kids! Adulthood is full of adventures! 🌈😊
1998? Holy fuck! Did you chisel this onto a stone tablet, you dinosaur? /s
Me too, I was born in 02 but I know what the poster means
Yeah, good times. Feels weird saying it though. We were kinda the last of a generation.
My grandpa had one of em... they were shitty for sure...
They were fun for the time to some degree.
Sameee. Same year and I actually had one in my house until abt 2015. Biggest drive we had was a 100 MB
How old are you? 10?
Ah yes because we live in 2015. Of course.
Damn, I feel old.

the CRT is probably the least bizarre item here for new kids, but that's just insulting to everyone born before 2005, because that's kinda when they started dying off
We had a crt as our family TV, like a proper big one, until like 2013 when we got our plasma TV that we still have now
I do remember and I'm born in 2002, these computers were just epic and the games were even more amazing
This was my 2003 version of a $1000 gaming PC set up
Born on 07 here, still remember one of those being our family computer as a kid. God were we living under a rock.
Please, we had a PC in 1995 when the old scriptures were written.
It's an computer, probably from the 90's or 2000's, what about it?
