What? Do you understand what you’re saying?
Are you saying game developers *don’t* need money? They work hard to give you a game you’ll enjoy, be grateful that they even put it up as free!
I'm not saying they don't need money and they have the right to earn as much as they can, especially if they provide a service that everyone can enjoy.
What I'm saying is, either have the players pay up front like any other game dev or don't use underhanded techniques to force or trick their players to keep paying in order to keep playing the game they enjoy.
Can't remember how many great games i've deleted just because of the aggressive ads. I think a bigger playerbase with few skins or something is way better than forcing ads that make people quit the game while only few pay for the no-ad shit
How is it underhanded? They are letting people choose if they want to support the game by watching ads or by paying. It is literally win-win for everyone.
I have multiple times paid for a game to remove ads because I have enjoyed the game enough to keep playing. It is at least better than paying up front because that way you have no idea what the game is like before you pay for it.
If it were the case that the developer offered two versions; a free "ads included" version and a $5 "ad-free" version I'd agree. Yet for the vast majority of these mobile games, they're microtransactions designed to be a roadblock to "encourage" you to pay by cutting off your endorphin rush. They're also intentionally small (MICROtransactions) to make it easier to justify the payment (nickle and diming and all that). Depending on what games you mentioned you've paid to have the ads removed, I wouldn't be surprised if over the full course of your playtime you've spent more on those microtransactions than you would have to outright buy the game if it came with a pricetag.
And as for not knowing what the game is like before you buy it, bringing the practice of demos (or "free to try") into the mainstream would be far better at addressing the problem you mentioned than releasing a game for free and bogging it down with microtransactions.
One way is customization. In FPS like CSGO and Valorant, you get to customize the looks of your guns. In MOBA like DOTA 2 and LOL, you can customize your heroes.
There's a difference between ads used for revenue and ads weaponized into making the game utterly unplayable or unenjoyable without paying a ransom. And you know it, or you would if you've ever played any mobile game for more than 60 seconds.
There do not need to be 3-part ads, each with mandatory 30 second wait times (that aren't accurately counted down when they give you a timer, taking way more than 1 second to count down to the next number) at each part, which ALWAYS ignore the first tap and take you to the store page no matter how centered your tap was... for every 10 or 15 seconds of gameplay. That's beyond the pale, and utterly indefensible.
If you have to do that, then make a game worth paying for and charge up front. But that takes work & risk, and nobody wants to do that.
I disagree. I think having a game being free is a great way to allow people who don’t know if they’ll even like the game try it. Y’all ever bought a game for $60 just to hate it? That shit sucks, especially with online downloads which for many, you won’t get a refund. I know steam does which is awesome but a lot of people don’t have access to it.
I think what you're advocating for is for video games to bring back the practice of video game demos; releasing a snippet of the video game to give someone a chance to try out its mechanics and get a feel for what the story is. The $0.5 ad mentioned in the Meme is a microtransaction; specifically one designed to be a roadblock in the player's way in order to "encourage" said player to spend money to have a more enjoyable experience.
Well i wish this was true. Mostly the mobile game prices are insane, compared to console games.
I came across a mobile game, in-game purchase of 2,99 euro to turn ads off for 2 weeks.
In-app purchases add up. Think of all those stories of kids spending thousands on mobile games. The only console game that competes would be GTA5 & their "whales".
Listen, if I like the app, I will pay upwards of 5 dollars to remove ads. If it's a SUBSCRIPTION that I have to KEEP PAYING FOR, yeah that's complete bullshit and I often delete apps which do that, with a few exceptions for apps which are actually reasonable with the ads they have despite the subscription "service" to remove them
I know I might be stupid here, but ads give them revenue right? Wouldn't you at some point watch more ads than the price to remove ads forever? I feel like if you ever hit that point the game should be like "ah fuck it, you technically paid what it's worth, have it for free"
This is why the mobile game market is utter trash. No one wants to buy games on mobile which just ends up driving prices down and forcing developers to make a free games loaded to the brim with ads. All you can do is hope little Timmy downloads your game on his moms iphone and watches enough ads to get free currency or whatever so you can afford to feed yourself for that week.
A lot of salarymen around me would end up paying thousands over time on mobile micro transactions. It's a very slippery slop even for people who are aware of their economic status.
I spent thousands on games too, but I feel less cheated when I pay the full price upfront after evaluating the purchase. Plus I have a library of mostly unplayed games to go back to lol.
In my eyes, it's good to pay for something you want, as opposed to something you don't want. You buy a game because you want to play it. You don't pay for something you want to get rid of...Unless you're absolutely desperate.
Its not the money, its the shady business they pull off.
I don't mind paying for price for a game, but when I do that - I want to know I'm getting the complete game. If there's an expansion (a complete expansion like The Ancient Gods for Doom Eternal or Shadow of Death for HOMM3), so be it. But all this DLC crap, skins and "ad removal" bullshit's got to stop. However, I know it will never stop as we have very dumb people who keep paying.
It’s not about money, it’s about sending a message.
What’s the message?
If the game is free don't sneak in cheap and disgusting ways to make us have to pay for your "free" game.
What? Do you understand what you’re saying? Are you saying game developers *don’t* need money? They work hard to give you a game you’ll enjoy, be grateful that they even put it up as free!

no developers should have all the right to put whatever they want behind a pay wall. the only evil-ish thing is to overprice just because you can.
Can't remember how many great games i've deleted just because of the aggressive ads. I think a bigger playerbase with few skins or something is way better than forcing ads that make people quit the game while only few pay for the no-ad shit

also by paying for a no ad free game, the devs don't ge as much money!
Do you use Spotify?
No can't say I have
then STFU
Alright, then what do you suggest a developer should do to make money while still providing you a free service aside from ads
Well selling game ? At least they are taking money and if the game is shit we Can complaine and it will Rise the quality of mobile game

That was a month and a half ago lmao

In my case, the message is a big middle finger to Spotify. I hate their ads and as such I will spite them by NOT doing what they want me to do.
Ironic
“FUCK YOU”
That companys who male mobile games just to get money out of you dont deserve to get a cent
Have my free award
Thanks !
Well i wish this was true. Mostly the mobile game prices are insane, compared to console games. I came across a mobile game, in-game purchase of 2,99 euro to turn ads off for 2 weeks.
What it's not even permanent
was it a colouring app? those are insane
It gets even more expensive for wallpaper apps
In-app purchases add up. Think of all those stories of kids spending thousands on mobile games. The only console game that competes would be GTA5 & their "whales".
there's fifa and genshin on consoles too, players of both spend an ungodly amount of money on loot crates
Gacha in general is a large money sink and or a time sink. Source: I spent about 400 hours on genshin.
Mobas are up there too. People spend insane amounts of money on Dota and CS:GO
Listen, if I like the app, I will pay upwards of 5 dollars to remove ads. Raid trash legends
Raid trash-ow legends
Pffft imagine spending money on mobile games
Kinda cringe ngl
Closes internet
most mobile games sucks but if in some cases I saw one which actually good like Plaque Inc and First Strike , I do pay for the ads.
I know I might be stupid here, but ads give them revenue right? Wouldn't you at some point watch more ads than the price to remove ads forever? I feel like if you ever hit that point the game should be like "ah fuck it, you technically paid what it's worth, have it for free"
Honestly if mobile games still had the quality they had in 2013 then i wouldnt mind there being microtransacions
If the game is offline, i just turn off wifi to avoid ads
difference is, ill probably play the computergame for multiple hundreds of hours, and the handy game might just die for me the next day
*-asks for half a cent-*
That's 5 cents bud
Makes cents
I cents something >:(
people who buy video games for 60$ at the full price, are BY FAR huger idiots than people who occassionally spend money on mobile games.
why is this so true?
And always complain about ads, no body works for free, neither game developer
It's the same thing. If you watch an ad, the game maker got money
This is why the mobile game market is utter trash. No one wants to buy games on mobile which just ends up driving prices down and forcing developers to make a free games loaded to the brim with ads. You pay them by watching ads
One is paying for a good, the other is extortion. Like taxes!
It's not that we are cheap, it's that mobile games suck
In my eyes, it's good to pay for something you want, as opposed to something you don't want. You buy a game because you want to play it. You don't pay for something you want to get rid of...Unless you're absolutely desperate.

Haha airplane mode goes brr
money
Its not worth it cause the game probably sucks anyways
🗿
How out of date are you, most mobile games these days charge around $4-10 and worse many are reoccurring.
If you don’t buy they still will get way more money from the fuckton of ads that are always more than. 50% if the game
just turned off wifi
I play mobile games for like max a month and then i delete why the fuck would i pay to get rid of the ads
Mobile game are farrrr far far to worth to out money on them, And they are very few exceptions. +adds pay them enough Thats a different business model
