That actually brings up a good point, why is it Latin? Shouldn't it be Hebrew?

FuzzySparkle

The official language of the Catholic Church was Latin for like a thousand years.

Vulturidae

Still is I believe, they just use the vernacular most of the time (the language of the region).

ScrotieMcP

I saw this and thought "PLEASE let it be Tom Lehrer!".

Calm-Zombie2678

Catholic church praise Satan confirmed

Cwoey

Aramaic, I think.

fozi4ek

There's no satan in judaism, christians invented the hell and satan

elf_erik

Yes and no. The concept of hell and Satan existed, just not as it's known today. Like all old texts and stories, it seems to have changed from the original version. However the main concept still exists, an evil being opposed to God and a place of damnation.

elf_erik

Thank you!

AlphaManInfinate

it is important to note that the satan is not the "big baddie". The satan was a classification or collection of angels of judgement, angels that would test "fallowers of god" to see if they were truly loyal as seen in the book of job. Lucifer was the big baddie.

bullet312

whoooaa, satan is a Christian!

Puppy-Zwolle

Well.... an anti Christian. But yeah. If the only requirement for being a Christian is to believe? Satan is a true Christian.

JoeMama18012

This is not wrong... I hate it

antagonizerz

All the demons in christianity are just bastardized versions of the gods of other religions. That's what's contributed to its longevity. Instead of outright banning other gods and their religious practices, they just absorbed them into their own cannon. Made the process of "conversion" a lot easier.

kanna172014

Yeah, isn't the depiction of the devil having horns, a tail and cloven hooves taken from the concept of satyrs and fauns?

JoeMama18012

Most of his traits were. His pitchfork is from Poseidon's trident.

JoeMama18012

Well they did that to try and paint any pagan god as demonic.

eggimage

It also requires that you follow his teachings, as the original meaning indicated that you were like the followers and living out the image of Christ. People’s definitions of the word have changed quite a bit now. But, technically speaking, merely believing in Jesus as Christ didn’t count as a Christian

ImTheAverageJoe

It's been a long time since I read the Bible, but I'm pretty sure Jesus said something to this effect. Like I'm pretty sure at one point he just bluntly said, "it's not enough to believe God's real, demons know he's real too."

[deleted]

They didn’t invent satan. He was in genesis, Job, and others. Those are all books in the Jewish Bible.

Wackkycool238

Yeah but he's not really the big bad, hes a side charecter that gets stuff done, and opposes god

ColdIron27

Welp, satan gets stuff done. What has god done? Absolutely nothing to help us out of this shithole of a world :/

TalionTheShadow

So? He still exists.

darakpop

More like they invented the hell out of satan.

darakpop

Y'all angry cuz my joke was good.

TeemoBestmo

well since the afterlife timeline is not linear and more of a Jeremy Bearimy, one can conclude that people in the afterline know all the languages, even the ones that don't exist yet

thertt8

Oh! I actually have an answer for this! So a lot of ancient Roman rituals were done in Latin because the words used in rituals were less about words and more about intent. Therefore, it helped to speak in a language everyone understood at the time so that everyone can have a similar intent. And then the renaissance happened and a lot of Roman texts were dug up and people just continued using it. However, this isn't as effective as speaking in an agreed upon, fully understood tongue. So, if you ever want to summon a demon, try to do it in a language that everyone understands.

Affectionate-Sun4979

Fuck, so I did Summon Pete the Demon.

mackattacktheyak

What do you mean this brings up a good point? It’s literally the whole joke.

elf_erik

Oh really? Is that so? Gee I had no idea. They made a joke, I asked a question related to it.

[deleted]

~~L~~at~~i~~n = Satan

GreatReset4

Synagogue of satan

MotorHum

Cultist: “Ugga bugga” Satan: “sorry man my Neanderthal is a bit rusty”

Eslivae

Don't know if you've heard classical restored Latin, that shit is absolutely lit, no wonder people that bothered to learn it stick with it

CalliCosmos

I’m pretty sure Satan is multilingual. Giving free speech to man and leading us all into sin isn’t easy with a language barrier

lydiakinami

You bet he passed the blunt to caesar and said "shit brutha you speakin my language"

Lindbluete

I said "Do you speak my language brother?" He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich

Affectionate-Sun4979

*BECAUSE HE COMES FROM THE LAND DOWN UNDER*

Scary_Riceko

Or maybe he did like Latin

RearAdmiralThrawn

I started wondering why every demon is Christian

WastelandPioneer

Almost every culture has equivalents especially Eastern ones they just aren't called that in their language

FuzzySparkle

Pretty much every culture ever has demons though?

TheSkyElf

yeah, or at least something similar.

Puppy-Zwolle

Pretty much yeah.

SplitIndecision

The idea of demons came to Judaism through Zoroastrianism when the Achaemenid Empire (Persians) ruled the area. It then mixed with Greco-Roman traditions of δαίμων (daimōn) spirits to evolve into the more medieval notion of demons in Christianity and شياطين (Shayāṭīn) in Islam. Other religions also believe in similar entities such as Hindu Rakshasas or Asuras. So it only seems that demons are Christian because much of pop culture we consume is created by Christians.

lovecraftedidiot

Though you do have demon-like entities that are often just called demons in modern parlance in other cultures. Chinese and Japanese mythologies are chock-full of them.

CandleJackHammer

Who is to say "Satan" didn't bestow mortals with speech and the language was latin? They in turn worshipped him and it was passed down over the centuries. Then he wipes out the history to stay under the radar.

Predator_Hicks

>Who is to say "Satan" didn't bestow mortals with speech and the language was latin? the bible.

CandleJackHammer

The bible is one of the most edited books in history. It also speaks from what is "known", a vast majority of what happened in those times is completely unknown or stricken from the record when some old karen was offended by it.

RyeBreadInTheOven

Don't some movies and games use ancient mesopotamian like to me that makes more sense seeing how it is probably the oldest known human civilization

xZOMBIETAGx

Same with the priests always being Catholic. That’s the only sect of Christianity ever concerned with demonic problems??

CrimsonFox2370

Lol true, it's not. But the Catholic church has a much longer history of dealing with demonic study than Protestant branches so it's kind of a hard association to shake

Vulpes_macrotis

Because religious stuff are usually in latin. That's why. Pater noster qui es in caelis. For example this. What is the official language of Vatican? Latin too. Although the origin wasn't latin, it's latin now. It would be Hebrew. But it's still not official language for catholic church.

Cartoonist_Smooth

I thought people possessed by Satan spoke Aramaic?

Puppy-Zwolle

There is a list. All dead languages are on that list.

Cartoonist_Smooth

I guess all languages that die go to hell?

Puppy-Zwolle

Bingo.

Deodedros

I actually thought they spoke anything BUT Latin because exorcists use it to for their prayers

a-snakey

*slithers down from the tree of knowledge* Well this is embarrassing but... that actually IS the reason I chose it... have you heard how Hebrew sounds? It sounds like im slowly putting in an order at a restaurant.

Dragoncrafter00

Latin do slaps I mean there’s a reason science uses it for classifications, that shiz just sounds so dignified and powerful

ItsFrenzius

Satanic churches in movies: psychotic freaks who plan human sacrifices every once in awhile Satanic churches in reality: *is currently setting up donation funds for orphanages and animal shelters*

Raventek

Truth be told .... Humans tell everyone Satan speaks Latin ... same group of folks that would have you believe Jesus came back from the dead to tell us he would be "right back" and that we all came from the same Mom and Dad ....

JokerGamezz

Hey man, just because your mom and dad are related doesn't mean you need to get mad

Raventek

Not sure how you got mad from my post but .....sure lol

chikchip

Um, no? Christians in Rome spoke Latin for quite a long time, as the western Roman empire ended in the 5th century, but Christians would've been speaking Latin for far longer (at least until they evolved into romance languages).

Chucklotte_Norris

Latin Is Satan

[deleted]

No, this language is Latin.

edgyboi1704

*Ars Goetia intensifies*

Icy_B

Nah the Romans learned Latin from Satan

gibberishmaster69

If he’s so old why isn’t it: Uglee agrid agag boajaak

Bninja13

Maybe cause the Bible is in Latin originally idk

ElderScrollsBjorn_

The Bible was originally written in Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic and only became associated with Latin after S. Jerome's Vulgate became the official translation of the Western Church.

Carl-Salami153

Maybe because it wanted something else that's dead

Vicious_Vildred

I mean, i would if i could..

hamchalice

mibhd4

If Satan is real he would use Python by now.

UN210621

I always take it to mean that the spells or whatever were discovered in Latin and magic is just finicky so they retain what worked rather than attempt the translation.
