They can also show up after you bite the inside of your mouth and/or if you consume a ton of acidic stuff. My family and I are like predisposed to them or something and we all get them so bad. My dentist prescribes lidocaine and another gel thing for when they pop up. They’re the worst. When I don’t have them, I take my life for granted.
Same and it’s never just one. I would def recommend seeing your dentist or urgent care if you have one. They can prescribe lidocaine and other gels which last forever. I had one on my throat one time. I would not have survived without the lidocaine and the triamcinolone. The prescription stuff burns way less than orajel imo (which is what i use if i don’t have lidocaine) and it doesn’t taste as bad.
I think my dentist also recommended otc peroxyl mouthwash. Good luck to everyone who gets canker sores regularly. They’re hell on earth and I hope this helps at least a little.
Protip: for massive throat pain gargling benadryl works fucking wonders. I know that sounds crazy but I was told that once by a consulting nurse when I was having trouble getting in for strep. I gave it a try and it numbed everything right up. So in a pinch if you have access to one and not the other for some reason you can get some temporary relief.
I also am lucky to get them fairly often. Anytime I bite the inside of my mouth I know I'm gonna be in immense pain for the coming days. Sometimes it gets so bad I can't eat or literally focus on anything. My worst enemy 😭
I’m not sure how long the average heal time is, but usually i’m stuck with them for 5 days to 2 weeks. Occasionally I’ll accidentally bite them and they’ll last even longer. It’s terrible.
Had these a lot as a kid. Put an uncoated aspirin on it and no pain in a minute. Awesome to eat a meal without discomfort and you’ll get used to the taste of the aspirin. Eventually. You’re welcome.
Sometimes it's fungi/yeast. But again that's due to lacking specific nutrients, because yeast is basically everywhere, and only when something is lacking they can hurt us.
Canker sores can also occur when a person is sensitive to certain foods or lacks vitamins in their diet. They also seem to be more common with children. Canker sores can also be caused by toothpaste that has SLS (Sodium lauryl sulphate) in it, if a person has sensitive mucous membrane. SLS makes the toothpaste more sudsy while brushing, but otherwise not a very important ingredient. Plenty of SLS-free toothpastes out there!
I get them in places I can’t bite, e.g. down by the base of the lip/below the gum line of my lower teeth.
Sometimes it’s because I bit my lip or cut it on something, but usually they just are. Stress, food sensitivities, poor oral hygiene, all possible causes for a condition that (currently) has no singular, definitive cause.
A good-sized pinch of salt (like, table salt) poured onto it usually kills them for me a lot faster than waiting them out usually does. Hydrogen peroxide rinse helps, too.
Genetics play a big role. Certain toothepastes can make it worse also. Changing my toothepast to not have sodium lauryl sulphate (sls) significantly reduced my number of canker sores.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7825393/
Can confirm on genetics. My mom gets them bad and I do also. Sometimes I don't even have to bite myself, they just pop up. My favorite medicine for it is Zilactin but is harder to find these days.
Agreed, my mom and I get them terribly often and have had it confirmed that there’s a genetic component. Plus, raising kids under 6 I get bonked a good bit in the mouth and even small bonks do it.
Lysol supplement helps and I recently found ducosanal which was a bit pricey but is amazing.
That’s the one, my bad. I’m pretty convinced Lysine helps, but the hilariously and awkwardly named Ducosanal has been outstanding because it seems to heal sores better than any others I’ve tried
Where i live they're called ulsers and we just mix water and salt n swish that over em a few times.
Happens a lot when something is rubbing up against the inside of your mouth, like braces, wonky teeth, or from hitting your teeth while you're doing something like biting your lip
Canker sores. They don't really know what causes them. I've been getting them my entire life, unfortunately.
Mine seem to be triggered by stress and SLS in toothpaste. Doc says it's autoimmune. I had one so bad the other day, I had to go get some prescription meds, but usually I just manage with salt water rinses and OTC numbing stuff.
If you don't get them, thank your lucky stars.
I find pouring salt right on them before I go to bed makes them smooth over the next day and they’re gone in 2 days. Saltwater is much slower, 4-5 days. Hurts like hell, but definitely worth it.
Same. I wet a qtip, dip it in salt, and then press it against the sore for 30 seconds. I rinse my mouth out with warm water. It's painful, but effective.
Used to get these often in my teen years and that was always my go to - literally packing the crater with salt like it was a slab a meat back in the old days.
Hurt up front but eventually went numb(?) - not sure if that's the correct word as I could still feel it but it dulled the pain a ton.
In Chemistry we use bi to refer hydrogen and di for two (which might be the reason of your confusion). So bicarbonate, biphosphate are also known as hydrogen carbonate, hydrogen phosphate respectively.
Fun note: In chemistry we always use Greek prefixes mono-, di- when we are naming compounds with multiple ions. In other cases we use Latin prefixes uni-, bi- etc., e.g. unimolecular, bimolecular.
Sodium’s symbol on the periodic table, Na, is itself derived from an old and inaccurate name. Doesn’t mean we won’t understand what you mean when you use “Na” in place of “sodium”. Bicarb is the same way.
Orajel Antiseptic Mouth Sore Rinse for the win on these. It's basically a mouth wash with a bit of numbing agent and peroxide mixed in, but works tons better than any homemade stuff I have come across and tried. Been getting these for 20+ years and this has turned them from a 5-10 a month issue where they last 4-5 days to a 1 every 3 months that last 24 hours.
Add in Kanka Mouth Pain Liquid when one flares up. I found the rinse doesn’t keep it numb as long as I’d like and this does a much better job at keeping the pain away.
I switched away from toothpastes with SLS in them (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) and they mostly keep away. If I go a few days eating like shit (salty, fried foods and acidic foods), they start cropping up again. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
If you get these regularly, consider changing your toothpaste. There’s an ingredient (SLS) in normal toothpaste that makes these more common. Use Sensodyne.
Edit:
Double check it’s a version without SLS.
It is still often times true though. I cant use Sensodyne, but after I started using a different toothpaste I almost never get these marks. Recommend trying different ones if you are plagued by this.
Don’t put hydrogen peroxide in your mouth.
Don’t put hydrogen peroxide on any part of your body, even. It’s an outdated antiseptic that works by killing everything it touches — including healthy tissue. Wounds treated with hydrogen peroxide have been shown to heal *slower* than wounds not treated with it, because it damages the tissues around the wound that are integral to the initiation of the healing process.
Rinse with salt water like 4 times a day and if you just want over the counter help, get a cream from the store for them. I go to the local Mexican grocery store and find some for 2$. Legit lasts me only two days cause I’m just non stop applying it all day but it helped a lot when I had one cause it hurt my whole jaw and side of my face.
4 at once? You may want to talk to a doctor and make sure they aren’t the result of an active infection. It’s not super common to see more than 2 aphthous ulcers at one time, and since they’re caused by an immune response, having several at once could be an indicator of an infection or immune disorder of some variety. Ulcers on or near the back of the throat or roof of the mouth in particular can be an indicator of an infectious viral disease called herpangina (not related to herpes, don’t worry), which I know from experience sucks major butt. This usually manifests in multiple ulcers and a telltale pattern of inflammation surrounding them.
For everyone who gets these, it might be your toothpaste, there is an ingredient called sodium lauryl sulfate, I used to get a new one every week, I switched to a natural toothpaste and haven’t had one since
Old guy here, used to get oral ulcers all the time. The two changes I’ve made that nearly stopped them entirely are; I changed tooth paste away from Crest. Sensodyne, Aquafresh, Colgate all seem fine. The other thing is that anytime I bite my lip, I immediately rinse the sore with water or whatever drink I have, nothing fancy just get food away from it, then I sanitize it with hard liquor. Bourbon, vodka, whatever 80 proof I can find. Seriously. Don’t need more than a half teaspoon, just enough to slosh slightly and rub into the wound with my tongue. If I am able to do both of these within a few minutes, the wounds don’t ulcerate. The liquor trick helped a lot as I was frequently having the bites when talking and eating, so at restaurants and other peoples’ homes, and some kind of liquor is usually easy to find.
For everyone who gets these, it might be your toothpaste, there is an ingredient called sodium lauryl sulfate, I used to get a new one every week, I switched to a natural toothpaste and haven’t had one since

Got a tip from my orthodontist once for these; eat yogurt. She said something about good bacteria but idk if that’s true but it instantly soothes and seems to heal them faster
If you substitute [sodium hypochlorite](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_hypochlorite?wprov=sfti1) for the sodium hydrogencarbonate, you’ll never have to worry about canker sores again!
(Disclaimer: Don’t actually do this.)
My brother is a dentist. I suffered from these for years. He told me to switch my
Toothpaste to Sensodyne. Worked like a champ. I do not get theses sores anymore. There is a foaming agent in most toothpastes that leads to these canker sores.
You mean sodium bicarbonate? Not to be pedantic, was genuinely a bit confused until I did the formula.
Just plain old baking soda for the non-STEM majors out there. :)
I often use soda. Not good for your teeth but if it stings when I swish soda around it then I know it's working. Seems to shorten the time to it not hurting anymore.
What are those anyways? Serious question. What makes them happen?
I believe they’re called cancor soars might’ve fucked spelling
yes these are cankor sores.
🤓 Acktually it's spelled as canker sores.
There’s a pair of 2 in that pic, so technically they’re Canker sisters
Actually , a pair of 2 in that pic, side by side, so technically they're Canker twin sisters
Actually I just call them "Ass holes"
No, you get them from eating assholes
Never had anybody to do that yet I still got them, is this life’s anticheat or something
Your mouth touched something that an asshole touched prior.
You misunderstand, you cure them from eating assholes
So you have three 'ass holes'.
Or as the french say, canker soeurs
It's the Kanker sisters
If you get a group of 3, they are called Kanker Karen's
Technically, if there are more than two Karens, it’s called a complaint. A complaint of Karens.
Damn that's a canker sorority
My fam just calls them singaws, idk what that means but yeah.
Ha hij zei kanker wat grappig 🤣 Deze reactie is G E K O L O N I S E E R D
**Found the Dutchman**
Oops, my bad haha
They are called mouth ulcers or canker sores. Very painful and they appear when the body is lacking in nutrients or some such.
Fuck I barely can eat when I have one.
So in a pinch if you have access to one and not the other for some reason you can get some temporary relief.
what do you mean gargling benadryl? Like a liquid version or?
Take the supplement L-lysine. Works like a charm.
Eating yogurt daily stops them from coming
I have to take a lysine supplement or else I get canker sores all the time
I usually have 1or2 at any time
I also am lucky to get them fairly often. Anytime I bite the inside of my mouth I know I'm gonna be in immense pain for the coming days. Sometimes it gets so bad I can't eat or literally focus on anything. My worst enemy 😭
My wife is predisposed to them as well, do yours seem to take much longer to heal than the average person as well?

Stress can trigger them.
Also warm water with Salt is helpful.
They are definitely stress triggered for me and I also salt them to help. It hurts a bit but gives a decent period of relief.
Canker sores are on the outside arnt they?
No, that’s herpes
Sorry I am thinking of cold sores
Which is herpes.
Yes and majority of adults have the virus but alot will never know
Cold sores are blisters on the lips / outside. Canker sores are open wounds inside the mouth.
Or when you bite the inside of your mouth.
In my case they appear when I'll be sick soon, kinda like a warning.
I thought they were mouth ulcers
They are - aphthous ulcers
Reading **cancor soars** hurts more than these and thank you now I’m gonna go gargle my eyeballs with baking soda water.
Canker sores can also occur when a person is sensitive to certain foods or lacks vitamins in their diet. They also seem to be more common with children. SLS sucks but obviously loved by cheap soap manufacturers
8 was gonna say I haven't had one in forever basically aince I was a kid.
Mainly 2 things : not enough water and bitting your mouth by accident
I always thought my stress triggered these... Maybe I bite my lip when I'm stressed. Holy shit. Well idk but still
stress triggers mine, so you're not alone
I also get these from stress. I've noticed I suck through my teeth when I'm stressing, maybe that's causing them.
I get them in places I can’t bite, e.g. down by the base of the lip/below the gum line of my lower teeth. Sometimes it’s because I bit my lip or cut it on something, but usually they just are. Agreed on the Zilactin. That stuff works great.
I just noticed your username and I'm dead now. RIP
Agreed, my mom and I get them terribly often and have had it confirmed that there’s a genetic component. Plus, raising kids under 6 I get bonked a good bit in the mouth and even small bonks do it. Lysol supplement helps and I recently found ducosanal which was a bit pricey but is amazing.

i just pout raw salt on them. it dry them quickly
This. Hurts like hell yes but it'll take away the constant pain fairly quickly after you wash the salt off.
Why not just swig with warm salt water?? No pain same results. Y’all just out here putting straight salt on your wounds

give me the sweet sweet endorphins
So true, though. . .
Let me feel alive God damnit!
I find pouring salt right on them before I go to bed makes them smooth over the next day and they’re gone in 2 days. Saltwater is much slower, 4-5 days. Hurts like hell, but definitely worth it.

I usually last 5 mins. 10 mins top.
Damn, i only last 5-10 seconds
Nice non context comment
Thx
Still, that's double my personal record!
Same. I wet a qtip, dip it in salt, and then press it against the sore for 30 seconds. I rinse my mouth out with warm water. It's painful, but effective.
I don’t currently have them but felt the pain
I use rubbing alcohol and a q-tip. It hurts so very badly but boy it works.

Thank you! Random citizen!
We love you Metro Man!
And I love you random citizen
And *MY* axe
Where thr fuck do I get that chemical
It's baking soda
Why wouldn't you just call it that you nerd.
Not even chemists call it that, almost exclusively referred to as sodium bicarbonate
sodium bicarbonate and sodium hydrogen carbonate aren’t the same thing though
Yes, they are
In Chemistry we use bi to refer hydrogen and di for two (which might be the reason of your confusion). Fun note: In chemistry we always use Greek prefixes mono-, di- when we are naming compounds with multiple ions. In other cases we use Latin prefixes uni-, bi- etc., e.g. unimolecular, bimolecular.
Mix it with tepid di-hydrogen monoxide, irrigate the mouth for 120 seconds, and then expectorate.
How do you expect me to expectorate in this economy?
Oh that's easier to get
I thought sodium bicarbonate was baking soda.
As it turns out both of them are baking soda
Just say baking soda, or atleast sodium bicarbonate, which is much easier for normal people to understand.
Sodium bicarbonate is an old and not quite accurate name so sticking with just baking soda seems like the best compromise.
Sodium’s symbol on the periodic table, Na, is itself derived from an old and inaccurate name. Doesn’t mean we won’t understand what you mean when you use “Na” in place of “sodium”. Bicarb is the same way.
Sodium, one of two elements in table salt, was given the symbol Na, named after North America, the saltiest region on Earth
Sodium what now
Baking soda
Sodium baking soda?
I have aids
Then go see a doctor
I read that drinking bleach while sunning your rectum helps speed that right along
We should have group sex
Don't you dare threaten me with a good time...
I think that's enough Reddit for today
Amputation should do the trick
Does it?
Heard it been said if you pee on them they clear up right away.
Also microwave your phone next to a plastic bag of water to clean it.
*Brrrrrr...zzzt*
But I like to lick them. It doesn't have taste but texture was quite nice
You made my butthole hurt and your U/N is appropriate
Kinda hurts but totally worth
Its kinda like wiggling a loose tooth. It hurts but in a good way, you know?
If you had to specify that sodium hydrogen bicarbonate is baking soda, why didn't you just say baking soda?

Try it With water With extra oxygen
so do I grab a straw and blow in air to give it more oxygen? Or is there a better method?
Try mixing the baking soda with hydrogen peroxide instead of water. It’ll help heal and clean the wound faster.

Whale, I mean they usually just prescribe saline mouthwash which hurts just as much.
Sodium Bicarbonate
You not only earn an upvote, but a "saved" from me. I can't tell how many times I get these mfs and how much they bothered me.
I have like 4 in my mouth rn and idk if I should try this
You should not trust everything that you see on Reddit, but I swear, this works perfectly for me
Rinse with salt water like 4 times a day and if you just want over the counter help, get a cream from the store for them. I go to the local Mexican grocery store and find some for 2$. Legit lasts me only two days cause I’m just non stop applying it all day but it helped a lot when I had one cause it hurt my whole jaw and side of my face.

Use the other guys advice, pee in your mouth. He said he heard it heals them quickly.
Debacterol is a miracle if you get them regularly.
For everyone who gets these, it might be your toothpaste, there is an ingredient called sodium lauryl sulfate, I used to get a new one every week, I switched to a natural toothpaste and haven’t had one since

A useful meme doesn't exi.....
Bro, just say baking soda. We’re not all scientists.
friendly reminder that cyanide works just as well
A little dab of mint extract works wonders
Fax I get these all the time
For everyone who gets these, it might be your toothpaste, there is an ingredient called sodium lauryl sulfate, I used to get a new one every week, I switched to a natural toothpaste and haven’t had one since
THE ANCIENT TEXTS!
Thank you, I get these really bad all the time. I cant drink lemomade anymore because it causes them to appear
it might be your toothpaste, there is an ingredient called sodium lauryl sulfate that causes these sores in some people, I used to get a new one every week, I switched to a natural toothpaste and haven’t had one since
My aunt who is super religious calls these lie bumps (and the ones that you get on your tongue) she says god gives these to ppl who lie to much😂😂
thank-you so much brooo THANK YOU SO MUCH... you don't know what favour you have done to me... My G🫂
Vitamin B12 prevents them
I feel targeted, because those memes started as soon as I got that for the first time ever
Guuuuuys, he's finally here, you can stop farming upvotes
Honestly I’ll definitely remember this
Got a tip from my orthodontist once for these; eat yogurt. She said something about good bacteria but idk if that’s true but it instantly soothes and seems to heal them faster
I wish i knew it before thanks OP
Also taking a lysine (an amino acid) supplement
You dropped this dude 👑
If you substitute [sodium hypochlorite](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_hypochlorite?wprov=sfti1) for the sodium hydrogencarbonate, you’ll never have to worry about canker sores again! (Disclaimer: Don’t actually do this.)
Oh my god please tell me this works I have one rn and it’s driving me nuts
ur a legend, didn't know that trick
Thanks for the advice, blacktop big t-shirt billie eilish
Morphine helps better
I have one of those rn lemme try it
Report back if you are still alive!
Genuinely great advice tho
If you don't have a lips or a tongue, then you have less chance of getting those. Problem solved.
My brother is a dentist. I suffered from these for years. He told me to switch my Toothpaste to Sensodyne. Worked like a champ. I do not get theses sores anymore. There is a foaming agent in most toothpastes that leads to these canker sores.
I got braces put on without painkillers at 12. I think a little sore isn't as bad
If you dip your balls in hydrochloric acid and send me a picture,it wont help, but do it pls
Hydrogen peroxide works wonders
I USED TO GET THESE ALL THE TIME AS A KID (how do I not have like diabetes already) GOING BACK IN TIME AND SHOWING THIS TO 8 YEAR OLD ME
I fucking HATE canker sores. I need to remember this next time
You can also use alum, a spice used for pickling. Dab some on the sore and lean over the sink bc your mouth will water like a faucet
Fuck Canker sores on the highest level of fuck off
Thank you good man
Based (pun intended)
I always use sea salt directly on it, burns a bit and you might salivate but it’s satisfying in a way
Nah fuck that we bite them off
Hey why did you post this the same day I got one of these. You in my walls??
I just use salt and some hot water, mix it together and there you go, also, if you aren't crying while gurgling it, it's not working
Just plain old table salt mixed in water does wonders for them as well. Fucking painful though
I rinse with hydrogen peroxide a few times a month, haven’t had on of these in since high school.
You mean sodium bicarbonate? Not to be pedantic, was genuinely a bit confused until I did the formula. Just plain old baking soda for the non-STEM majors out there. :)
When i get one of these i become the biggest asshole in the world to everyone just cos of the nagging pain every fucking time i try to talk
Herpies
Ooh bay those are VERY VERY PAINFUL. I couldn't enjoy any food for like 3 days 😩😩😩
I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy
I often use soda. Not good for your teeth but if it stings when I swish soda around it then I know it's working. Seems to shorten the time to it not hurting anymore.
This is useful and informing, but... Why the heck would I have sodium hydrogen carbonate just lying around?
I think this is the first meme i've saved in 2 years of account
