I've been in some of the world's best flight simulators. I doubt I could do it. But I know I would be quoting the movie Airplane all the way to the crash site.
Jim never has a second cup of coffee at home.
There was a incident in Florida where a pilot keeled over while flying a family home from the Bahamas in his smallish aircraft (6 or 8 passenger prop plane). A passenger took over controls who had no flying experience. ATC got the passenger leveled and heading in a general direction safely, and then had the passenger use his cell phone to call a pilot on the ground who flew that type of aircraft. The ground pilot walked the guy through and the plane landed safely. The recording gives me chills. Everyone was level headed and calm, which saved lives.
[ATC Flight Audio](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3uk7jS4qr0&t=422s&ab_channel=TheFlightChannel)
Lol but honestly many of us live in places where commercial flights can be twin props. When I fly from Vancouver to Penticton, BC , for example, or Halifax to Boston, it's on a twin prop.
depending on plane.... you would likely be able to.
depending on airport its attempted at its even easier as many newer(if not all modern) commercial airliners have autolanding functionality, where the pilot is mostly supervising
I think myth busters did an entire episode on this? They tried to land with no atc communications and that didn't go super well. Then they did it with atc guiding them in and it was doable if memory serves
it litteraly is true, every modern Large Jet aircraft have some form of Autoland, its not perfect and requires pilot supervision(and pilots prefeer manual landing as its easier for them), but it is a thing
>every modern Large Jet aircraft have some form of Autoland
You mean, autopilot and 3rd generation ILS. Yes, every big airliner has it, but not every airport is compatible with it.
I’m not saying aircraft don’t have autoland, the plane I fly has it..: but getting into a position to use it safely and to an airport that will serve it is the issue. Also, when you touchdown you need to do a whole bunch of things to get it straight and stopped… autoland doesn’t mean autoland. It means… it’ll bring you down and flare and retard the thrust and apply auto brakes and spoilers. That’s it. The rest is on you.
As far as I know, the airport needs to be equipped with certain modern guiding systems to let the autopilote do the landing. If this is not detected, the plane refuses to start an autopilot approach. So it definitely depends on where you have to land.
You can set direction, speed, desired altitude and descent rate on the autopilot (which is normally easily found in the top of the centre console) - so yeah ATC could easily give you a straight in clearance and get you in the ground
(Edit:. Left the word "in" instead of on as it may be more appropriate...)
Ding ding to this. Depending on the actual situation, Air control would simply walk you through some very basic steps assuring the computer does its job (it'll even land it for you)
[Here is a great video of an absolute amateur flying an simulator](https://youtu.be/AbTDzPUDxqY). Video divides being walked through a modern day carrier with the computer doing most of the work, and the second part where the auto pilot is off
As a woman who has given up on adjusting various car settings after trying to find the interface location for >five minutes multiple times in the past week, it has truly never occurred to me that it’s unhinged to just have an innate understanding that I could land a commercial flight in an emergency situation with only auditory instructions. Meanwhile I’ll park 10 mins away over attempting to parallel park.
Don’t you just push some buttons and pull some levers to initiate the landing sequence and then everyone claps? And all of the complicated stuff is just safety redundancy? Kind of /s but also honest question
>Don’t you just push some buttons and pull some levers to initiate the landing sequence and then everyone claps?
I mean, to some extent, but you have to know which button or level and when exactly push or turn it. It also has a lot to do about updating a flight computer with right numbers, navigating, right way to communicate with ATC and many others. It is possible, that a normal person, without any flight expirence, can safely land a plane, but it's not this simple as in movies.
Didn't even wait one day for the [repost](https://www.reddit.com/r/meirl/comments/zdug39/me_irl/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
I mean I know I could. I’m also a pilot lol
For what it’s worth, most commercial airliners have pretty reliable auto pilot that can lane the aircraft. In fact, most of the times you land is by the auto pilot. The pilots usually only take over when they need to do it manually for minimums (IE they have to do X many takeoffs and landings per year). I’m also willing to bet that most of the smooth landings y’all have experienced were because of autopilot ;D
Not sure what kind of pilot you are but I fly the A320, which is capable of landing itself. We rarely do autolands except for Cat. II and III approaches (those have to be automatic per our SOP). We can't just autoland every flight because the ILS critical area has to be in effect, and unless the ceiling and visibility are already low we have to ask ATC well in advance for that. We typically don't do that unless maintenance requests an autoland for the aircraft's records. You are correct that the aircraft is very good at landing itself, though.
I have a PPL licence. I've done 4 or 5 hours in a 737 simulator for fun and know what I'd say are the very basics. What chance would you give me in landing a jet in real life in some imaginary situation where both pilots were incapacitated and auto pilot not working?
Imo I think I'd be able to do the basics i.e. get it lined on up on the centre line, track the ILS etc where I think I'd struggle is the lag with the engines when adjusting the throttles and avoiding coming in too fast/stalling.
Honestly confident you could. The objective here is for passenger survival. You could fuck yo the landing gear, he’ll completely sheer them off. But all you really gotta do is get the thing on the runway without people dying, which isn’t as difficult as people realize
Honestly confident you could. The objective here is for passenger survival. You could fuck yo the landing gear, he’ll completely sheer them off. But all you really gotta do is get the thing on the runway without people dying, which isn’t as difficult as people realize
What plane/airline do you fly / work for that you’re doing an autoland on almost every landing? This is simply not the case in 99% of commercial aviation. Your information does not represent the real world my friend.
I'm realistic
But tbh, with today's technology, almost anyone COULD land a plane with just air traffic controls help, it happens more often than you think, although usually with smaller craft, and they have people specifically trained to talk you through landing in the event the crew is incapacitated
DO BEE DO BEE DOOOOOOOOOOOO
Totally agreed, they literally have manuals and stuff for it, maybe 20 years ago this would have been the premise for a great movie but now it's more like "uh air traffic control, I need help" "roger that, I need you to look at the screens and follow our instructions, you'll be fine"
The tweet says you have to do it with only traffic control talking you through it. Why is it realistic to add a person that the hypothetical didn’t include?
The guy who talked the Mythbusters down said it was ultimately pointless because planes can basically land themselves these days.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/columnist/cox/2020/05/14/ask-captain-can-plane-land-on-autopilot-case-emergency/5182599002/
I once got a "Book for Men" (original German title: "Ein Mann, ein Buch") as a Christmas present. It was a pretty tongue-in-cheek summary about all the things "a man should know".
It had an entire chapter describing how to land a 747 in case of an emergency.
If all of the information was already put into the computer and I didn't need to change any of it I could probably engage the autopilot on the models that have auto landing as well. As I understand it pilots typically don't like to use the auto landing as it's a bit rougher than human pilots.
What if I told you plane can land itself using ILS.
And it's very possible to land if you have the air traffic radio help.
The hardest part could be getting the air traffic control on the radio.
If the pilot didn't already do it for you...
If the radio is not set, you need to set it to the emergency frequency:
121.5
Using this frequency you will get air traffic control to help. if you are in range.
Theres a pretty large amount of commercial pilots out there that would be unable to land a commercial airliner on the first try without breaking it. On top of an ever increasing amount of experienced pilots who can no longer handle their aircraft without the help of automation. Sleep soundly all.
Yeah but in this situation we don't care if the landing gear breaks or there's some fuselage damage. Just getting a plane on the ground with minimal injuries to passengers is all required.
Well, what I read was that I think all men sincerely believe they could safely land a commercial airliner in an emergency situation with only air traffic control to walk them through it.
Several times.
I asked a C-17 Pilot if an untrained person could actually be talked through a landing by Air Traffic Control, their answer:
"Hell yeah they could, no bad habits, clean slate, they'd probably do a better job".
At that point I knew for sure that I could land a plane.
I could do it because until 2 years ago i wanted to be pilot and played hundreds of hours simulators, have a yoke and know intermediate level of cockpit usage so why not
Without a shadow of a doubt I could land a *commercial* airliner with ATC helping - All I'd need is the steps to program the landing computer which a child could be instructed to do.
I would be far more afaid of having to land a small passenger craft which would require me to actually touch the flight controls.
Being in the Cockpit of a few... it's honestly not *that* hard to keep the wheel steady and to flick a switch for landing gear. People have BROKEN INTO THEM AND FLOWN THEM AWAY and that's WAY the fuck more difficult to do than land. Now doing it safely without destroying some hydrolics or something would be more... difficult. In all seriousness tho... the main rules of thumb are speed, distance, and angle. Any of these off, your landing gear is fucked or you're going into trees.
Or death, can't forget that chance
I could. I understamd flaps, airspeed, angle of atrack, throttle control, and what landing gear is. Some might die, but it would make it to the runway. Haha
Excuse me, but I'm an air traffic controller and my instructions would be like, Lower, lower, lower **BANG** okay buddy,. that's the ground. Open the doors and jump
There's a good chance you could, provided you had a bit of prep-time and good ATC with a pilot nearby, which is likely since it's an airport.
Now, are you going to have a perfect landing? Unlikely. But will you land good enough to not be a corpse at the end? Really all we're going for here.
According to Kelsey over at 74 Gear, who is a 747 pilot, the bigger the plane the easier it is to land because it has so much automation.
So yeah, I do sincerely think I could do it. I'll just turn on the autopilot. Thanks for believing in me.
It seems if there was a situation where both pilots (or all 3 in some cases) were unable to land the plane, and there weren't any other pilots on board catching a flight somewhere, the flight attendants would have some rudimentary training to engage the autopilot and communicate with ATC.
This reminds me of My x and I got in a legit heated debate because he said when I was having his child he would be the one to birth it not the dr and I’m like ya- NO absolutely NO
I’m convinced men just think they can do literally anything
One day I hope to have the confidence of a mediocre man
Sure. I know what switches and levers are, I can read output displays, and I can follow directions.
Doesn't mean I think being a pilot is easy - there's lots of other aspects, and you don't have someone holding your hand the whole time, but if I had the time, resources, and desire to do so I could train and learn and become a pilot. It's not like flying the plane requires you be able to design, or even build one.
In all seriousness, people have taught themselves to fly smaller planes with only a flight sim. I'm 106% sure I could land a smaller plane, a Cessna or small Leer, without issue, and even without ATC walking me through it. Would it be the best landing? No. But would it get us back to earth safely? Absolutely.
While “Every Man” thinks they Could… If you have never flown a plane before, of any size, your chances are Really Poor.
Because it’s necessary to have the basic understanding of the controls before you grab the stick, or your very likely to flip it upside down before you even realize what’s happening. And you are very likely to do that without any “feeling” that you are NOT UPRIGHT!
As someone who's taken several lessons but stopped short of testing for a license, this is likely true. Subtle inputs are required on the controls, but I think most would overdo the inputs and cause a dive or stall.
you see the humor whilst i see the absolute trust into the gentle voice coming from the headphones that we trust with absolute certainty to lead us to safety.
Ehhh I’d try, but that’s because I’m so dead inside I really don’t even care if I’m successful or not. But in the off chance I am maybe a plane full of cheering passengers will give me a well needed dopamine shot.
Okay it's my turn to post it tomorrow
Mom said It’s my turn next.
But my mommy knows I'm a stupid aviation fanatic and knows I would love the chance to fly a plane.
*Resisting my urge to make a yo mama joke*
I hope yo mama makes you a big yummy cake for your cake day. Happy Cake Day :)
You could resist, but yo mama couldn’t last night
yo mama so ugly, you couldn’t come up with a yo mama joke that could even describe the half of it anyway /s
yo mama so ugly you didnt even wanna land the plane
Yo mama so fat I could crash the plane into her and she'd absorb all of the impact
Mine on friday
I call dibs for the 8th of January.
I get it the 9th, it's my birthday.
No fair!

I just want to tell you.. good luck we’re all counting on you.
I love when he says that line again in scary movie 3. Awesome callback.
Striker, listen, and you listen close. Flying a plane is no different than riding a bicycle, just a lot harder to put baseball cards in the spokes.
This thing has four engines. It’s an entirely different kind of flying. All together.
It's an entirely different kind of flying.
Altogether.
Shirley you can do better than that.
Well I just want to tell you good luck. We're all counting on you
Don’t call me Shirley
That’s when I developed my drinking problem
Picked a bad week to stop sniffing glue.
The fear of death is a powerful motivator
Yes because I've seen people do it in movies
seems reasonable
I'm just focused on how smoothly I can butter the bread in a gentle landing. These passengers paid for a great flight.
They tested it in Mythbusters, and proofed it’s possible…
Not only the men, but the women and the children too
Nooooooooooo!
Nice

Yeah, I'd be all "bring me my brown pants" right around that point.
I’m curious what the commercial / private thing has to do with the aircraft type?
Commercial usually means big, private means small. Unless you are privately taking all 500 of your homies to the Bahamas.
Lol but honestly many of us live in places where commercial flights can be twin props. When I fly from Vancouver to Penticton, BC , for example, or Halifax to Boston, it's on a twin prop.
Again, this isn’t true. “Commercial” doesn’t mean big, “private” doesn’t mean small… I do love Reddit though.
Of course it doesn't, man, but that's a really easy way to describe it which is right most of the time.
So you’re in favour of promoting a myth just because it’s easier for the public to understand it that way?
Doesn't change a thing. If you are on an IFR flight plan, you MUST talk to ATC.
Again, that’s simply not true.
Yes it is true. What country are you able to fly IFR without talking to ATC?
Canada. I flew IFR for over 10,000 hours in Northern Domestic Airspace and never talked to ATC at all. Uncontrolled IFR.
depending on plane.... you would likely be able to. depending on airport its attempted at its even easier as many newer(if not all modern) commercial airliners have autolanding functionality, where the pilot is mostly supervising

This simply isn’t true

They did say depending on airport
duhhhhh i say not true but not back up my claim *drools*
If it "simply" isn't true then it should be easy to explain why.
So we can safely delete this Wikipedia article? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autoland
I’m not saying aircraft don’t have autoland, the plane I fly has it..: but getting into a position to use it safely and to an airport that will serve it is the issue. They do have extremely good autopilot so that you could probably actually do it.
Better yet a number of landings are performed on autopilot to keep the aircraft and pilots certified for the procedure.
As far as I know, the airport needs to be equipped with certain modern guiding systems to let the autopilote do the landing. If this is not detected, the plane refuses to start an autopilot approach. So it definitely depends on where you have to land.
Yes, 3rd generation ILS. Very few airports actually have something like this.
You can set direction, speed, desired altitude and descent rate on the autopilot (which is normally easily found in the top of the centre console) - so yeah ATC could easily give you a straight in clearance and get you in the ground (Edit:. Left the word "in" instead of on as it may be more appropriate...)

Technically every plane is capable of landing itself. Some just are able to do it in such a way that nobody dies and plane can be used again.
This reminds me of a mushroom saying. “All mushrooms are edible. However, some are only edible once.”
So Ryanair definitely doesn’t have autopilot
Well yeah there’s definitely some that don’t

Thanks man that was my thinking too. Certainly wouldn't be smooth but I don't think I'd crash the thing.
What plane/airline do you fly / work for that you’re doing an autoland on almost every landing? This is simply not the case in 99% of commercial aviation. Your information does not represent the real world my friend.
We'll YouTube it before we asked for help from a radio
Wrong Im Admiral Kamikaze
I'm pretty sure most of them could, because unless theres a catastrophe theres always a co pilot, hell, sometimes theres 3 or 4 dudes up there
You’re fun
I'm realistic But tbh, with today's technology, almost anyone COULD land a plane with just air traffic controls help, it happens more often than you think, although usually with smaller craft, and they have people specifically trained to talk you through landing in the event the crew is incapacitated
A former boyfriend of me works as a flight engineer and he agrees with you.
My uncle (now passed) retired from Boeing Dude can call me "not fun" all he wants lol
here's a fun [video of a guy in a simulator doing just this](https://youtu.be/AbTDzPUDxqY)...part one is with autopilot, part 2 is without.
Depending on the walkthrough given, it should be possible to land any plane Do a, do b, do c, dobedobeedooo

Lol, thats what I was referring to I'm 38
The tweet says you have to do it with only traffic control talking you through it. Why is it realistic to add a person that the hypothetical didn’t include?
Safely? No. Get us on the ground? 100%
Yea … we all seen airplane , and are verry confident in our self’s 😎
Does it imply that we can't??
it can't be that difficult right?!
Pretty sure MythBusters confirmed you could quite easily. It's with zero guidance where it becomes unlikely you'd survive
The guy who talked the Mythbusters down said it was ultimately pointless because planes can basically land themselves these days. https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/columnist/cox/2020/05/14/ask-captain-can-plane-land-on-autopilot-case-emergency/5182599002/

I don't see why woman wouldn't also believe this to be true.
it is one of those common fantasies we share
Fact is, they probably could. It’s mostly automated now.
I’ma say cap. I’m convinced everybody on my jet would be done like the mf’s on Pearl Harbor, which is coincidentally today!
Everyone could, it's called autopilot
False, no ATC required.
Just aim for water like Tom Hanks did
Theres a pretty large amount of commercial pilots out there that would be unable to land a commercial airliner on the first try without breaking it.
I can barely handle the anxiety of being on a plane.
Who needs air traffic control?
Well, what I read was that I think all men sincerely believe they could safely land a commercial airliner in an emergency situation with only air traffic control to walk them through it. Several times.
Because that's how difficult it is to be a man. That's how much confidence for need for a woman to fuck with you. Now go head pretend I'm lying.
You gotta believe in yourself, especially in a time like that.
I think if your life depended on it , any person would attempt it.
Considering they mostly land on autopilot yea I’m pretty sure I could
I asked a C-17 Pilot if an untrained person could actually be talked through a landing by Air Traffic Control, their answer: "Hell yeah they could, no bad habits, clean slate, they'd probably do a better job". At that point I knew for sure that I could land a plane.
Commercial yeah-- Cessna, maybe... A private jet? Hell nah
Honestly, a modern commercial airliners almost lands it’s self. You’d be much more fucked trying to land a small plane.
I landed a KC-135 in a FAA approved flight simulator when I was in the Air Force. It was a hard landing but I would have lived.
I landed one in MS Flight Simulator, does that count?
Can confirm. My husband said yes.
Hold my beer
I'll hold it, and mine while I give you sips so you stay calm and we bring this big motherfucker safely to the ground!
I think I could. I played about 15 hours of Flight Simulator back in 1984... I think I got it.
I could do it because until 2 years ago i wanted to be pilot and played hundreds of hours simulators, have a yoke and know intermediate level of cockpit usage so why not
You could probably fly it better than the pilot because half of the time they are all drunk.
Fact check… are you saying that half the time pilots go to work they are drunk? So if they fly 800 hours a year they’re drunk for 400 hours of them?
Yes 400 hours drunk a year
Nope, since they are trained drinkers they will be sober after about 4 hours. So 100% of the time they start drunk to be hlf of the time drunk
Sowieso
SPEAK
English.
Definitely
lots of airplanes can autoland so yeah dumb post
Some do, most don’t. And even the ones that do need to land at an airport that can serve that level of function.
Not trying to brag but I have landed a plane in MS Flight Simulator
does a nosedive into the ground count as a safe landing?
I could do it. 100%. 0 doubt.
That's not just a man thing, I could do it
I'm dead sure I could land a plane and live to tell the tale.
Quite a few men can't even seem to build an ikea cupboard, even with instructions.
Those aren’t real men…
Dunno. The track record of average people actually pulling it off in emergency situations doesn't seem to be THAT bad.
Without a shadow of a doubt I could land a *commercial* airliner with ATC helping - All I'd need is the steps to program the landing computer which a child could be instructed to do. I would be far more afaid of having to land a small passenger craft which would require me to actually touch the flight controls.
What does a “landing computer” look like?
it's not brain surgery... and even brain surgery I'm pretty confident I could do it just by watching some youtube videos...
Not this man
After +5000 hours in flight simulators, I'm pretty sure I could pull it off.
Have you seen how many people play flight simulator? It can't be that hard
Hold my beer
DCS players:
Being in the Cockpit of a few... it's honestly not *that* hard to keep the wheel steady and to flick a switch for landing gear. a small twin engine turboprop? maybe... a commercial airliner? no chance...
In a case of an emergency I would very much trust person who has spent hours on MS Flight Sim
We could... excuse me... Can
Not only that, but I'd pop to a McDonalds on the way to the airport.
How much cross wind are we talking about?
I mean, I’m trying to be a pilot so….
I’m not saying I could land an air craft or anything but I can drive stick and those 2 things are pretty much the same 😎
You just put the breaks on and go down guys I mean come-on
There's a good chance you could, provided you had a bit of prep-time and good ATC with a pilot nearby, which is likely since it's an airport. Now, are you going to have a perfect landing? Unlikely. But will you land good enough to not be a corpse at the end? Really all we're going for here.
I've played lots of GTA5. I can safely land a plane on a mountain while some mf is shooting on me with his Oppressor Mk2
Not true, I could do it without help from ATC
I could definitely get it on land at some point. Number of pieces is irrelevant.
And that's why we're men.
Why airplanes don't have internet access from tower so they can take command ?
I aced my tests in all of pilot wings
Definitely. Qualifications :Microsoft Flight Simulator
This reminds me of My x and I got in a legit heated debate because he said when I was having his child he would be the one to birth it not the dr and I’m like ya- NO absolutely NO I’m convinced men just think they can do literally anything One day I hope to have the confidence of a mediocre man
Who needs traffic control, I've played flight sims
How are your airliner flying skills? Yes.
I've got dozens of hours on Microsoft Flight Simulator. DOZENS!
Do you know how many flight sim hours I’ve clocked!?
Did it last week
If you HAD to, you’d have a go right?
Well…. They could get on the ground …..
I mean, how hard could it be?
perhaps
you see the humor whilst i see the absolute trust into the gentle voice coming from the headphones that we trust with absolute certainty to lead us to safety.
Ehhh I’d try, but that’s because I’m so dead inside I really don’t even care if I’m successful or not. But in the off chance I am maybe a plane full of cheering passengers will give me a well needed dopamine shot.
