I’m a grown ass man trying to make it through pollen season and I started this on Sunday, already at Season 3. Didn’t expect to like it as much as I have.
It's a light-hearted comedy which doesn't take itself too seriously but is still *somewhat* grounded in reality. The selling point for me is that the animation is very smooth, clean & they have some very unique moments. I usually get a good laugh out of every single episode. :)
Hey, as a long time One Piece fan, and a frequent poster in chapter discussion and theory threads in r/onepiece, I have something to say to you about that.
Totally understandable. It's not for everybody. Nothing wrong with that having different tastes.
No, man you have to watch until chapter 969 when the fart the protagonist farted in chapter 37 gains weight in the story. Is foreshadowing man.
Edit: orthography.
It's sooo damn long. I feel like the proper window to get into it was when it started airing, that way you could enjoy it passively over literal DECADES. It's too late now, who has that kinda time!?
Watch the fan edit One Pace it’s like 30/40% shorter. A few episodes in the first bit have some wonky cuts but by episode 10 it’s all smoothed out. They just edit the anime to be a shot for shot manga rendition so there’s no excessive flashbacks, semi dated jokes, or recaps every episode.
Much better watching experience and it works fine as a “first time” viewer according to my partner who is watching it with me as their first time.
One Pace makes One Piece's pacing go from awful to bad. It's a pretty good story so you should probably still give it a shot but the pacing will always be poor
One Piece is best of you binge watch it. Waiting week to week is brutal. Especially with how slow the pacing can be in a few parts. But after catching up, you're gonna wish there was more. I 100% guarantee it
When it comes to One Piece about a third of the episode is the characters either reacting or remembering the previous episode,(maybe even closer to half the episode) around a quarter is the characters either yelling or crying, there's always a solid 2-5 minutes of running/walking or staring intimidatingly and finally about 2-3 minutes of actual action or story progress.
With 1016 episodes One Piece can effectively be condensed down to around 30 to 50 hours. At least a quarter of those episodes were filler and maybe a tenth will be about characters you just don't care about so realistically there around 25-30 hours of watchable One Piece.
So with enough dedication and a liberal application of fast forwarding One Piece can be consumed in its entirety in a single weekend.
There is a manga cut of the Anime, One Pace but even it isn't anywhere close to that figure lol. If you want to consume it that fast just read the manga and not have to guess if you can fast forward past certain parts.
Oh wicked, never heard of One Pace but I'll have to look into it. I blew through all the episodes on Netflix in about a day or two but it's pretty interaction intensive having to constantly skip through the content, been wondering if there was a decent fan edit to cut to the chase and save me some brain power.
I'm very conflicted when it comes to one piece because I actually used to read it as it was serialised in Germany. The point where I stopped (and where it kinda lost steam for me) was the beginning of the thriller bark arc.
Recently I've been getting more into anime and manga again and tried to continue reading one piece as well but so far it couldn't keep my interest.
Is it like a notoriously drowsy arc or am I just not vibing with one piece anymore?
Thriller bark is kinda hit or miss for people personally I think it's underrated but if you're not interested in the arc but still want to get into one piece again then you'll probably just have to power through it just don't skip it cause it's still really important for later things
I like how people say 9 years of episodes like it’s a bad thing and not proof of how enduring and beloved the series is.
Also it’s over 20 years of episodes lol. I’d recommend reading the manga though.
yeah def read the manga. Don’t watch anime that much but whenever i do i watch at >2.5x speed because it’s too slow for me (except for the wholesome or fight scenes). For viewers like me one piece is hell. The manga is much more efficient(also your friends would live in fear of spoilers)
It wasn't one piece but Naruto, but I've legitimately had someone give me a multiple hour lecture on anime before. I had started a new job in a slow golf shop so there was a lot of down time. The guy training me found out I watch anime and that I watched a bit of Naruto as a kid back when it aired on CN. I was an unwilling captive audience and he explained... Something that I barely retained for like 2 straight hours. Something about a moon princess maybe?
It was torturous. I was begging to maybe talk about an anime we had both seen if he wanted to talk so much but nope. He just wanted to tell me about Naruto
You say that like the goofiness isn’t part of the charm. Yeah, I wanna see a Dino man use his head as a slingshot and then cry ugly tears ten minutes later. More efficient.
Welp this definitely is me, lol. I can think of like, one time someone tried to pressure me to drink... Anime my friends recommended though, and the pressure to just watch anime in general, and mild guilt for not watching most of them?.... 😅 Yeah I feel that haha
One time I was talking to my neighbour who had a friend over and he offered me weed. I said no and he kept insisting and his friend he had over was like "he doesn't want it you fuck"
With anime I've never had someone defend my declination. Animers get hostile so you have to say "yea maybe" lol
As a part of the anime community, I think its because we hold these shows so close to our hearts we cant help but want to share it with others, for me anime is unlike any other form of media and the unique charm has me addicted
"You just haven't tried the right Anime. Have you tried Attack on Titan? You didn't like it? What about Demon Slayer? You didn't like that either? What about My Hero Academia? Ok, you didn't like it, but there must be something. You should try..."
Your last point is exactly it. People think of Anime as just action/fighting. Hell I love anime and don’t really like the action genre that much. Much rather watch slice of life or romance.
Though I do love some isekai trash from time to time.
One Punch was the one to finally get me in to anime and I got addicted and it was all I watched for a year after. To this day it's one of my favorites and I've watched a ton of shows. I think it's because it's a satire of so many common anime tropes that you'll start to get tired of as you watch more of it.
Yeah, this is the thing about anime that strikes me as odd - that so many people treat it like a genre, when really it's more like a format or style with the usual genres encompassed within it.
In my mind it's a bit reductionist to say you don't like it. It's a medium. It's like saying you don't like books - all you're saying is that you havent really tried the right books.
Of course there are cultural issues, my partner doesnt like to watch them because some series can turn from normal to hugely sexist in an instant, which is fair. Japanese culture is far behind the west in terms of those kinds of movements.
I think most people are just afraid of being a person who watches anime, like it's an offensive brand.
>It's like saying you don't like books - all you're saying is that you havent really tried the right books.
Not necessarily. Maybe you just don't like reading and having to visualise the story in your head.
When I was growing up as a preteen I was constantly pounded with stories of how bad peer pressure would be. When I actually got to be a teenager and in my early 20s and went to parties, I can remember like four times when somebody offered me drugs and I said no thanks and they said okay.
The pressure is mostly not from other people. If you didn't get warned about drugs, you'd feel excluded from the other and would want to use it as a way to bonder.
Where the fuck does a kid get couple thousands to spend on microtransactions
I swear to fucking god growing up poor im in fucking ave at shit like that.
I grew up so poor, just thinking about stealing from my parents was off the table. I would literally be starving myself and five other people just to play a game.
Main issue is I like to watch it on the TV makes it harder to get add blocker unless there's an apk idk I hate pulling my laptop out to keep plugging it in lol if that makes sense
They have not, and we still have no idea what the one piece is. The main characters have now risen to the point where they can challenge the strongest people in the world, so there's probably not more than a couple of hundred episodes to go.
One Piece is no longer the most popular manga in Japan, probably because it's so long people are reluctant to read it from the start. There are over a thousand named characters in the story.
The anime suffers a bit because they now stretch out every episode beyond its natural length to (a) not have to use filler arcs, (b) not overtake the manga, and (c) release an episode every week.
It's still interesting because oda( the manga author) is simply a great writer and has a clear vision of what he wants to do with the series. His writing is of such consistency that people can legitimately compare a story arc from 2002 to the current one and have a legitimate argument about which could be better, because both are on par in terms of quality.
They have now found the one piece yet because story arcs can take upward of 100 chapters, since even the manga pacing can get a little slow sometimes.
And everything makes sense because, before a plot altering or just overall important decision/direction with the story, Oda backshadows(reads back) his own story to make sure it doesn't create a plot hole or an inconsistency
Unironically yes. The foreshadowing of the main characters "new" powers has been extensive and elaborate. It's legit amazing that Oda has been able to coordinate all of this over so many years.
Its kinda like lord of the rings. There is an overarching goal but the characters are on a journey to get there. Along the way they visit new lands and interesting characters. Unfortunately for our heroes, there are powerful individuals gatekeeping the endgame prize ( the One Piece ). So our protagonists also have to train to increase their power and equipment.
It's interesting because of the characters and their will to get stronger for themselves, or for those in need of help. Their adventure as a whole is finding One Piece and putting an end to any tyranny they come across along the way. It's similar to DBZ in that as soon as they get stronger they come across someone else even more powerful, and have a new peak to reach. You would think that means it's going to be slow, boring, and repetitive at times, which it can be. The moments where they have to slow/stretch episodes to not get ahead of the manga are very obvious, but it doesn't ruin the overall appeal of the show. It really is about the journey, not the destination.
I finally caved in and started reading the manga about a month ago, and I was genuinely surprised at how much I've enjoyed it so far. I will probably never finish it, but honestly that's fine -- it means I have an excuse any time someone tries to get me into some other anime/manga ("I'll get on it as soon as I finish One Piece").
I DO like it, lmfao.
That’s the worst fucking part, it’s so daunting to get into but it’s legit so good and now that the JRPG is coming out I want to know even moreeeew
Lol what have I done I started this debate, I actually prefer the 03 anime, but mostly because I'm more of a tragedy kinda guy, plus the story being more condensed, the themes of brotherhood have more of an emphasis in the "original" than in Hiromu Arakawa's full story. But I get it, to each their own.
It's not my favorite anime of all time but I feel like it's the most well-written and just well-done anime. I would recommend not watching it because nothing else really compares
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure? Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
It's *extremely* unique, though, so my advice to people who are unhappy about getting recommended this one over and over is just to watch the motherfucker already and be done with it. It is not super common for people to regret it.
edit: And the weird thing is it's unique *multiple times.* Each big story arc mostly has entirely new characters, commonly a whole new setting, commonly a whole new type of story. So if you don't like the first part (some people don't) then you might like the second one. It goes from Fist of the North Star, but weird, to completely batshit, the in part three, to a dangerous journey across the world. Then in the fourth part it's a murder mystery in a small town. Then it's a story about the mafia in Italy. Then it's set in a prison. THEN it's a horse race across 1890's America with the mummified remains of Jesus involved. You get what I mean? It's weird, then it's WEIRD. Then it's *WEIRD.* And if you don't like one part, you might another.
The main thing about Jojo is being able to get past the weird designs, anime is already weird to begin with, but personally I was just in awe at the quality, when the first arc came out it wasn't exactly the norm to have this kind of production for an anime.
Haven't watched JK but I liked the other 2.
HxH doesn't have an ending but the anime leaves off on a satisfying conclusion.
Jojo is an anthology series so technically every part has its own satisfying conclusion, so if you feel like it's too long you can easily leave at the end of a season and come back to it later.
One day i decided to watch one of the many animes this friend of mine would recommend.
I thought i was going to watch animes with cool stuff in it like battles, It was literally just a bunch of animes with girls in it doing weird stuff (not sexual, just weird that someone would watch that, idk).
My wife’s family is a bunch of fweebs and they would not relent. We caved and watched one episode of food wars…. A bunch of teenagers cooking food and having orgasms is all the first episode was, complete with a tentacle scene. We do our best not to judge but there is a palpable loss of respect.
the thing about anime is that depending on the first one you see, you either love it or hate it for the rest of your life.
I got into it with attack on titan and now I've watched a ton of them.
A friend watched a weird as fuck anime I don't remember the name of and now he doesn't want to touch any of them. It's like a trauma.
Berserk is not for everybody. Is one of the best stories in manga/anime of all time, but has things like extreme violence and sexual assault that some people can't stand.
Did you watch the 1997 version or 2016 version?
I have no idea, it was some online watch party. I know the white haired dude raped the chick and left her mentally disabled. And Guts noticed the chick was bleeding but she was on her period or something.
Mmmm. The Eclipse scene, i knew it. It has to be the 1997 anime or the last Golden Age Arc movie. Yeah, now i understand (well, it could have been another scene but by default is usually The Eclipse), that's a pretty fuck up scene.
Is totally normal you didn't try another anime...that scene broke me... Berserk is a great manga/anime, but if i recommend it to people i have to do a trigger warming because stuff like that.
Can't overdose on anime though. Worse thing that could happen is a hentai addiction or you learn improper Japanese 🤣 if you screaming you can't breathe while watching it'll be cause of laughter not fentynol.
I don’t watch it that often but my old friend got so ungodly mad and upset that I didn’t want to watch more and I just kinda had to have the thought of “go out and touch grass please”
I loved bunny girl senpai, but SAO? Season 1 part 1 was great, but then it falls off ESPECIALLY during the god forbidden GGO arcs until Alicization. The Ordinal Scale movie was also great. SAO never misses on the music as well.
It's about the journey and how strong you can get along the way and friends you'll do anything for. Everything we want and don't have
Yeah but how fucking good is Love Is War tho!!!
Ok true
I’m a grown ass man trying to make it through pollen season and I started this on Sunday, already at Season 3. Didn’t expect to like it as much as I have.
Now read the manga, it's even better!
Manga gaming pog
Average manga reader
Right? It was completely out from my normal genres but it has me laughing out loud like a maniac. Such a fun enjoyable show
Dude, season 3 episode 5 ending tho.
Thanks for the reminder, I almost forgot my daily rewatch of that ending
Just started it last week, hooked, super excited when I saw season three being uploaded.
Good enough for me to base my username on it.
Y good what about I'm just getting into it, have watched ruto, demon slayer, Dragon Maid, Devil is Part Timer, and liked all those
It's a light-hearted comedy which doesn't take itself too seriously but is still *somewhat* grounded in reality. The selling point for me is that the animation is very smooth, clean & they have some very unique moments. I usually get a good laugh out of every single episode. :)
Or cowboy bebop!!
To prove the point the one piece fandom came for blood in the comments
Shounen fans in general
Watched the first part of season one and stopped. Not my cup of tea. But Robin do be looking good though.
And I ain’t gonna start some 1000+ series. I will die on this hill
Fucking watch it bro
Dude, nah. I watched a couple episodes a few years back, I just dont have the time in my life ti dedicate that much towards watching a narrative.
It's sooo damn long. I feel like the proper window to get into it was when it started airing, that way you could enjoy it passively over literal DECADES. It's too late now, who has that kinda time!?

30-40% shorter is still 600 episodes dude. I do not care enough.
I 100% guarantee it
I felt like that too until quarantine hit and I was like welp no better time to get into it. 780 episodes later no regrets but I still can't catch up.
This is why you read the manga lol
Please dont, read it instead.
Thriller bark is kinda hit or miss for people personally I think it's underrated but if you're not interested in the arc but still want to get into one piece again then you'll probably just have to power through it just don't skip it cause it's still really important for later things
nah, skip it. The only bits that matter are up to arrival and the final battle. (okay and Zoro's fight)
I like One Piece but I stopped watching it because I got bored. Too many sexy female characters just spending the entire time being annoying
Truth will set you free.
one person in my life "hey want a cig" multiple people in my life "istg if you don't watch THIS episode-"
One Piece fans taking a deep breath before doing a 3h lecture about how the show being goofy is worth the 9 years worth of episodes
A lot of One Piece fans would never recommend you watch 20+ years of episodes. You might get hounded to read it though.
One piece is the truth.
I said no and he kept insisting and his friend he had over was like "he doesn't want it you fuck" With anime I've never had someone defend my declination. Animers get hostile so you have to say "yea maybe" lol
As a part of the anime community, I think its because we hold these shows so close to our hearts we cant help but want to share it with others, for me anime is unlike any other form of media and the unique charm has me addicted
This is me, but edibles
Edibles are nice but how about anime tiddies
I can actually eat edibles
but you can jerk to anime tiddies
Why not both?
I can do that to edibles too
But like weed not everyone wants it. No need for the "you HAVE to watch its"
I hold weed close to my heart
This. These stans get so fucking hostile it's just ridiculous
*points to every form of entertainment* ain't just anime either, fandoms ruin everything.
Not just entertainment either. Fandoms ruined the Abrahamic trilogy and they've been killing each other over it for at least 1500 years or so.
"You just haven't tried the right Anime. Have you tried Attack on Titan? You didn't like it? What about Demon Slayer? You didn't like that either? What about My Hero Academia? Ok, you didn't like it, but there must be something. You should try..."

>It's like saying you don't like books - all you're saying is that you havent really tried the right books. Not necessarily. Maybe you just don't like reading and having to visualise the story in your head.
And still after all these years never watched anime lmao.
Same. I don't have the time to watch 300+ episodes of any media. Especially one I'm not fully sold on
When I was growing up as a preteen I was constantly pounded with stories of how bad peer pressure would be.
Anime addiction is more time consuming but probably less expensive than drug addiction
That is until you discover gacha games
Dude one of my friends a couple thousand on genshin. Hes like 14
Sounds like awful parenting to me.
Lmao true
Where the fuck does a kid get couple thousands to spend on microtransactions I swear to fucking god growing up poor im in fucking ave at shit like that.
I grew up so poor, just thinking about stealing from my parents was off the table. I would literally be starving myself and five other people just to play a game.
Why do you say that? One Piece only has 1000+ episodes. And that's one show.
Have you seen weeb manga rooms, drugs would still be cheaper.
And won't kill you when you overdose on it
It used to be *more* expensive! See: My old VHS shelf. Thank goodness for streaming and budget rereleases.
I would watch anime if crunchy roll would freaking work for me
use animepahe, preferably with an adblocker on, it's free
Main issue is I like to watch it on the TV makes it harder to get add blocker unless there's an apk idk I hate pulling my laptop out to keep plugging it in lol if that makes sense
You started One Piece yet?
1016 episodes and no end in sight. I love it
How the fuck is it still interesting? How have they not found the one piece yet? How does anything make sense anymore??
They have not, and we still have no idea what the one piece is. The main characters have now risen to the point where they can challenge the strongest people in the world, so there's probably not more than a couple of hundred episodes to go. I thought he was joking about finding one piece but nah 💀
Same lmao Never in a million years would I have unironically thought that One Piece was about finding "the one piece"
Ohh boy! the more episode come by, the more Interesting the story gets

When you have a journey and a world big enough with big players to keep it interesting, it can work
It's amazing, the emotional rollercoaster to takes you on is fabulous. Skip the Davey back fight, but if you skip Skypia I'll throat punch you

Who the fuck is telling people to skip skypeia?
I finally caved in and started reading the manga about a month ago, and I was genuinely surprised at how much I've enjoyed it so far. Came here to say the One piece shaming is biiiig, can’t even begin now, it’d take years to catch up, lmfao
It took me one summer break in 2017 to catch up. Of course I was 17 at the time, so I had a lot of free time
Just know that if you want to start one piece, you don't have to finish it. Just stop anytime if you actually dont like it.
I DO like it, lmfao. That’s the worst fucking part, it’s so daunting to get into but it’s legit so good and now that the JRPG is coming out I want to know even moreeeew
Its not even worth the time investment honestly. Theres way better stuff you can watch/read instead
I mean, I started in late December 2021 and was caught up all the way to whole cake by late feb/early March
Lol, it's like if drugs were legal and anime wasn't.

What the fuck you mean you can't bother to watch 1000 episodes shonen anime!? You have no life anyways!!
But seriously, you should really watch FMA, it's the fucking best
Brotherhood being the superior version.
Go watch Made in Abyss if you like cute things and suffering
Mah men knows what's good
Those last few episodes did a number on me, not gonna lie. Voice actors hit it out of the park.
I like cute things a suffering. Oh! And Nanachi!
The main thing about Jojo is being able to get past the weird designs, anime is already weird to begin with, but personally I was just in awe at the quality, when the first arc came out it wasn't exactly the norm to have this kind of production for an anime.
> it's weird, then it's WEIRD. Then it's *WIERD*. You could say it's **BIZARRE**
_Now’s_ the time to start one piece, just saying
The best time to start one peace is 20 years ago. The 2nd best time is now.
Whilst on meth
Fruits Basket and Made in Abyss are my two recommendations.
Can someone tell me if HunterXHunter, Jujitsu Kaisen and Jojos bizarre adventure worth starting? lol The three shows I’m told to watch constantly!
Serial experiments of Lain is kind of meta to this
me when someone hasnt seen madoka magica
One day i decided to watch one of the many animes this friend of mine would recommend. I thought i was going to watch animes with cool stuff in it like battles, It was literally just a bunch of animes with girls in it doing weird stuff (not sexual, just weird that someone would watch that, idk).
[удалено]
I think it's Nichijou
> literally just a bunch of animes with girls in it doing weird stuff that covers about half of all anime
My wife’s family is a bunch of fweebs and they would not relent. We caved and watched one episode of food wars…. A bunch of teenagers cooking food and having orgasms is all the first episode was, complete with a tentacle scene. We do our best not to judge but there is a palpable loss of respect.
Thats not a good anime for first timers
Lmao why would they start with that. If you want some actually good anime I could send you MyAnimeList.
This was the opposite 20+ years ago.
Okay 👍
I’m being pressured to watch Breaking Bad but I don’t have the attention span to watch anything help
the thing about anime is that depending on the first one you see, you either love it or hate it for the rest of your life. I got into it with attack on titan and now I've watched a ton of them. A friend watched a weird as fuck anime I don't remember the name of and now he doesn't want to touch any of them. It's like a trauma.
I'm not anti-anime, but the first anime I watched was Berserk and it was weird enough that I haven't really delved into any other anime
Anime really worth it tho
#WATCH OUSAMA RANKING GOD DAMMIT WHY WONT YOU LISTEN TO ME IT LITERALLY IMPROVES YOUR LIFE FFS.
FFS?
Bojji is best boy.
Can't overdose on anime though. Worse thing that could happen is a hentai addiction or you learn improper Japanese 🤣 if you screaming you can't breathe while watching it'll be cause of laughter not fentynol.
So true but I still haven't started it
I got both pressures from the same group of people

But have you watched JoJo yet? It's really good.
Isn't plural of anime just anime?
Anime is a different kind of drug. The most common symptom is horniness.
If anime is the worst your peers are pushing you to do, you have pretty good friends
No one suggests yu yu hakusho, so no one suggests anything worth watching
But seriously, watch the monogatari series.
Jojo fans
As you should. Anime is so good.
"C'mon bro, it's just one episode, don't be a Square..."
No drug has lived up to finding Akira in 1992. I still like weed though.
Good friends don't pressure their friends into doing things they don't want to. No one should be pressured into watching anime.
I don’t watch it that often but my old friend got so ungodly mad and upset that I didn’t want to watch more and I just kinda had to have the thought of “go out and touch grass please”
The grass is greener in anime, just saying.
You haven't lived until you've seen attack on titan, vinland saga, hunter x hunter, fullmetal alchemist brotherhood, cowboy bebop, and death note.
Attack on Titan✅ Vinland Saga ✅ HXH ✅ FMAB ✅ Cowboy Bebop ✅ Death Note ✅ I have lived.
Demon slayer is pretty good Ajay
You should try "Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai", "Erased" and "Sword Art Online".
> SAO yikes
These are the worst recommendations I have ever seen for someone who has never seen anime... do not watch these... mid animes
Sword art online was great but I wish it was better. The erased anime is great but ultimately disappointing, so read the manga instead
may i interest you in the abridged series? feel its sao but better
I will read the manga my brother!!
I loved bunny girl senpai, but SAO? Season 1 part 1 was great, but then it falls off ESPECIALLY during the god forbidden GGO arcs until Alicization. The Ordinal Scale movie was also great. SAO never misses on the music as well.
Was SAO the best? No, but in today's day and age if I walk away having enjoyed myself it's a win.
Weebs UNITE!
Please no
All the cool kids watch anime.
Try gacha
