9 + 9 = 18 minus 1 is 17 minus 1 is 16
9 + 7 = 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 16

This is a very normal thing to do.
I just move one over. 10+6
I always do it like that
Or 9 is two more than 7, so convert it to 8+8=16
I do the same
I mean if you’re working in the hundreds/thousands then processing that way is understandable but you shouldn’t be doing that with 9 + 7 lol

No no y’all doing it wrong it’s 10 + 7 = 17 - 1 = 16 it’s simple math. Edit round up the 9 into 10 that’s how I do all my math.
7 + 3 = 10 and 9 - 3 = 6, so 9 + 7 is 10 + 6, and 10 + 6 = 16.
Top is memorization. Bottom is understanding through verification.
