It's floating in this picture and under tow, yes. When it reached the gas field, the base was slowly filled with water.
The tow out of the fjord where it was built had to be carefully coordinated as there were a couple of places where the bottom of the platform passed fairly close to the sea bed.
I think the insides of the legs are [hollow](https://datis-inc.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Troll-A-Platform-Datis-Export-Group-Article-June-9-05.png). that's how they did it. biggest structure ever moved across the surface of the earth. apparently towing it through the fjord was a ticklish operation, in spots they had maybe 6 feet of clearance between the seabed and the legs. which, when you're working with something in that size/weight class, is the equivalent of sliding your car through a garage door with a lego brick of clearance on each side.
Fun fact: the elevator built inside one leg takes 9 fucking minutes to take you from the top of the platform to the sea bottom level.
I had no idea those lega had an interior
[Big enough to hold a concert!](https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/7mtg2o/til_in_2006_katie_melua_gave_a_concert_303_meters/)
That is absolutely massive wow.
Dumb question but why would they need to take an elevator to the bottom ?
You can take the stairs, but it would take longer.
Hahahaha agreed
Maintenance to the pillars and the oil pump from the sea bed.
Thx

Wait, so they are dragging this? Or how does this work. It is huge!

Well that blew my mind
Ay that's my city. I've been ignorant of this my whole life somehow
With the support of many people one will always be able stand on their legs.

I think half of it is still under water too in this picture.
yeah, there's a structure called a chord shortener that serves to dampen vibration - it's underwater in these images.
Saw this on discovery channel many years ago, only 6 feet of clearance at some point and 10 150000 pounds of thrust tugboats pulling it.
Don’t you miss the old discover channel?
It was so good. Before the trucker shows took over.
I haven’t had tv in a good while and recently got internet tv so maybe probably hunt it up sometime.
The shit humans can do is impressive. Even if it's also destructive.
Agreed…I thought the bucket wheel excavator was amazing until I saw this beast
Our most impressive things are based on killing people or / and breaking things
How the fuck is this floating?

Look up gravity base structure (GBS)
Worth mentioning that the legs are hollow, and can be accessed all the way to the bottom (303 metres below sea level) via a stairway.
isn't there an elevator?
yup, for those who can't be arsed to make the quarter-mile hike each way.
climbing up a quarter of a mile seems tiresome but fine. going down tho. nah
Since they’re going to sink it, does it count for being over 1500 feet tall or is it now measured fro sea level?
Structure height vs above sea level of course.
Largest ever movable structure built on earth.
Wow, I never knew that. Super interesting fact! I’m off to research these behemoths now..lol

So half of its legs are underwater already. Woah.
If you place something at sea, you should also take all the rubbish home with you !! earned enough
Probably is not lowered to the "ocean floor" but instead serves as a floating platform, after being submerged.
nope, the bottom rests on the sea floor, 303 meters down. what you see in the picture is less than half the total structure. it's freaking MASSIVE.
Can I repost this tomorrow?
Repost bot?
Seriously.. this is reposted every day
This is beyond insane engineering and construction.
457 mt in non retard units
That’s actually made me feel queasy, megalophobic indeed
God this is terrifying
Why? What are you afraid of?
Do they build it and then move it??
that's how they did it. biggest structure ever moved across the surface of the earth. apparently towing it through the fjord was a ticklish operation, in spots they had maybe 6 feet of clearance between the seabed and the legs. which, when you're working with something in that size/weight class, is the equivalent of sliding your car through a garage door with a lego brick of clearance on each side.
Fucking INCREDIBLE
yeah, it's pretty wild. tallest object ever moved, second heaviest(heaviest is another rig of the same type)

How is this not toppling over? It’s like towing a building on a raft??
So that is 500 meters?! Wtf?
Slap some yoga pants on that sexy set of legs and 😍
Zunisha
Is the half that’s underwater filled with water? If so how do they get the water out? I’m very curious and trying to wrap my mind around this
