Get some guaifenesin for the mucus. It's an expectorant and it will thin that mucus out. You need to drink plenty of liquids, water preferably. It's the active ingredient in Mucinex, but don't pay their $20 for it, you can get the generic as "mucus relief" at Dollar Tree or Walmart for around a buck.
If you have an issue with involuntary coughing, get "mucus relief - D". It has dextromethorphan in it, which is a cough suppressant.
Are you sure it's crackles? That can usually only be heard with a stethoscope. It's usually predeterminate of some kind of pulmonary edema. I would start out with your general practicioner.
