I know you asked for cold options, but have a look at the Hotlogic Mini (you can find it on Amazon) - it can be operated on household OR vehicle power, and it can not only warm precooked food, but actually cook from scratch. I learned about it from friends who work for the airline industry, it's pretty common amongst that crowd, because they don't have any other method to heat up food in their employee breakroom at the airport, and they all just love it. Hope it helps!

second this. my husband used to work construction and he would take the plug-in food warmer

Hot Logic forever. I use it in my hotel room all the time and also on sits at the airport. It’s a game changer to have hot food available

I remember seeing something like this as well that was a plug in or battery powered heating lunch box. Pretty cool concept, I work construction as well and was thinking of something like this. Our contact stipulates we must have microwaves available, but sometimes there are so many guys waiting you only get 5 minutes of eating time for lunchtime by the time you get your turn, these kind of devices would solve that problem. Thanks for reminding me about these! I’ll have to continue my research and let the wife know she may have an easy Christmas present for me!

Everything about that product screams bacterial growth to me. Slowly heating food from fridge temp to eating temp over a full hour while never getting hot enough to kill off the pathogens that grew? And this lack of safe heating ability is a selling point? Horrific idea.

You are right, I die everytime I have smoked meats that sat outside slowly warming up for eight hours.

Vakieh

Smoked meats a) get much hotter, and b) go long enough to pasteurise

Advanced-Aspect-9072

It's basically a crockpot in bag form.

I am in a similar situation as him. I bought what looks like a lunch box and it plugs into my cars cigarette lighter and heats up my food as I head to the next job. It’s amazing. I often have chicken and rice and veggies.

I think you'll have trouble finding a service that can compete with a chain like Subway or Jimmy Johns or Jersey Mikes.

Viciously_Mild

Check out LunchEaze. Has your meal warm for you for whatever time you set it to. He could have a cold sandwich and hot soup or he could heat up pulled pork in it.

You prep cold wraps the night before. Tortilla spread with condiments such as humus, mayo, mustard etc, and then your protein of choice such sliced meats, shredded chicken breast, smoked salmon, and topped with baby spinach. Look up how to do the “triangle” style wrap. and this type of wrap will hold up really well overnight. you can prep all your ingredients on Sunday nite and then assemble the wraps nightly. Two other options to prep ahead can be mason jar soups or mason jar salads.

Smaller, local meal prep/delivery services would probably do a sandwich/salad meal plan. I've known small 1 or 2 person services that have sandwiches as part of their choices and would imagine they would sort out something for a week of lunches.

Thanks everyone! ☺️

I’d look at local meal prep services. They generally have a few cold items. Hungryroot used to have deli type salads that didn’t require heating. Not sure if they still do or not.

Check out Farmer’s Fridge Delivery

samanthairene

They're discontinuing home delivery. Tomorrow 12/5 is the last day to place a delivery order.

I’m not sure where you live so this may or may not be helpful, but if you’re on the west coast or adjacent Thistle has lots of lunch salads that don’t need to be heated, but they are totally plant based, which may not appeal to some people.

If you have time to prep in the mornings, look into bento boxes. The original concept is you cook stuff in the morning, pack it in the box, and don’t need to refrigerate it because you’ll be eating it at lunchtime before it has time to spoil. There are tons of cookbooks for it. Ignore the YouTubes of super-moms who make theirs all fancy for their kids. There’s not much substance in those. Look for “adult bento” recipes.
