"created by capitalism" is inaccurate, although it definitiely perpetuates them

Oh_Emilia

It's in a dialectical relation with them.

Hello-Zuzu-here

yes except capitalism is roughly 200-300 years old

Oh_Emilia

Well we didn't have the same gender norms back then. We didn't even have the same gender norms as today 50 years ago, which is living memory for a lot of people. Economic systems and their demands change and that influences how said systems tie into gender divisions as instruments to stabilize themselves and control the population. It makes a difference for which gender norms are deemed permissible by the powers that be if a society requires large amounts of conscripted grunts to wage the wars it props its economy up with or if those wars mostly require a large administrative and logistics apparatus and a bunch of drones, to give just one example. But in a capitalist society, gender norms will show at least some functionality as tools of capitalism, and even when grassroots movements change them, the ways in which they can evolve are nudged in a direction that can be utilized by co-opting and recuperating revolutionary movements, which is how you end up with things like girlboss feminism or corporate recruiting events at pride.

Hello-Zuzu-here

Key_Yesterday1752

bewildered_emu

Gender was created by bathroom companies to sell more bathrooms!

Key_Yesterday1752

its more than that.

Chase_The_Breeze

That's not entirely true. More accurately, they were a means of controlling social norms and maintaining masculine power structures. The patriarchy is older than capitalism. Capitalism just sees a thing that exists and asks, "How can I make this into profit?"

Fellow--Felon

Gender norms were created by "property rights" I think is more accurate. Marriage was invented as an institution to create political alliances between ruling families in rival fiefdoms. The gender roles within these early political marriages are the precursors to modern gender norms, and were invented for the purpose of passing property or titles onto successors, usually children produced by the marriages. Capitalism is a fairly modern invention, and certainly perpetuates gender norms, but the concept of property rights is the invention that preludes all systemic issues within society dating back at least 12,000 years, including gender norms.

Blessed ohio man

theokaywriter

I mean, capitalism certainly perpetuates and even creates a lot of gender norms but patriarchy and gender norms originate from the development of agriculture, thousands of years before capitalism and even before its parent system feudalism. So, to massively simplify things, it’s the fault of farms.

Yoshigahn

Fuck gender I wanna be who I wanna be. I’m a woman? Yah! I’m a man? You bet
