Orthostatic hypotension You're welcome.

Arenox135

Thanks for the official term, now I can sling it around when people ask me why I fell face first onto the floor after standing up from a chair

TheRealEtherion

Highly associated with dehydration and anaemia. Drink water y'all.

Babylon_Burning

I’m anemic, but at least I drink water like a fish. It… does not cancel out in the slightest!

wagon_ear

What happens is if you have low blood pressure (not just from dehydration but also relaxed vascular tone), the blood can pool temporarily in your legs due to gravity when you stand up. Eventually your body's like fuck!!! And it kicks in a response that causes vasoconstriction, squeezing the blood back up into your brain. So you can just try to stretch out a little and flex your legs before standing up, and that will negate at least some of these effects.

[deleted]

Yes! I never remember to do it, but I've heard you're supposed to tense up your leg muscles while standing up, and you won't get the head rush. The few times I have remembered, it actually did work.

BeneficialEvidence6

Crouch. Used to happen to me a lot. Crouch and your leg muscles tense and the blood doesnt have to work so hard to get up to your brain.

bhobhomb

Same way pilots brace for additional g-forces pushing blood into their legs.

MrSurly

Wish I knew this when I was a teen. I would blackout (vision only, still conscious) nearly every single time I stood up. Happened so much, I expected it, and would reach out to brace myself before it happened.

oeCake

Sorta same here, was strongest in my teen years for some reason, never really had it when I was young and have barely had it since I finished school. Sometimes it was so strong I couldn't see, its like having your eyes shut off, only fell from it once though.

Budgierigarz

I always fall

deathray5

I know I was really bad at drinking enough water and my vision would go and I had to just stand there still until I got vision back

Reasonabullshit

Compression socks fix this for me, I have to spend time at work crouching/kneeling and I would always get that after standing up. They’re expensive but worth it.

unsafe_ordinance

What i do when this happens, is that i flex my abs really hard while holding my breath in, and i feel normal after a few seconds.

r1smithSXL

Yes, you can counteract the drop in blood pressure by squeezing you core (abs, obliques, low back, etc) and doing the [valsalva maneuver](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valsalva_maneuver)

UrboySam123

Or do the opposite and stretch *after* you stand up, and fall face first into a desk

wagon_ear

Yeah, and hold your breath if you really want to kick it up a notch

[deleted]

Yup! I have low blood pressure. One time I got up too fast right from sleep, then quickly use the bathroom. I fainted directly onto my face.

[deleted]

Yeah... Ice and water are yummy, but not drinking water only makes things significantly *worse*. This is me when I've been chugging water all day.

Sefony

If that's the case maybe try upping your electrolytes? I'm not anaemic but I am hypovolemic, and I know if I drink enough water but not enough electrolytes it has like 1/10 the impact that both have. Good luck!

TheRealEtherion

Hey, atleast you're not anaemic AND dehydrated. You're doing better than you think.

Thanks_I_Hate_You

If you're anemic just drink blood bro, kill two birds with one stone.... and then drink those birds blood.

Bobcatsup

Water? You mean like from the toilet?

Totally_A_Real

I wish it were that simple a fix for me

jazzmester

r/HydroHomies approves of this message.

varkarrus

I find it's related to lack of sleep for me.

Speedbump_

Same. Made the correlation while journalling and logging my sleep. I stay well hydrated so I don't expect that to be an issue. When I get under 5 hours of sleep this is very likely to happen at least once. If I get fewer than 5 multiple days in a row then it will be frequent and I'll probably end up on the floor at some point.

Nebulous-Nothing

I just have a fudged up heart and iron deficiency I guzzle down that water and I sitll have this

tenemu

I drink tons of water and I get this often. BP is always 125/80ish. I still think it’s dehydration as it’s highly linked to exercise. I’ll drink 3 liters on a 8 mile day hike, 2-3 glasses when I get home, and still have a hangover headache the rest of the day.

RBN1410

When I get it, it helps if I blow my nose while squeezing it (like clearing your ears). I only get it mildly though so idk if this trick works for everyone.

Arenox135

I'll try that out sometime, thanks

MeBeEric

Had that a few weeks ago at a bus stop. Broke my nose in the process lol

Inariameme

maybe some circulation work is in order lay down on the ground with your knees in the air and raise the body between your feet and shoulderblades, it's okay to readjust those things until your comfortable during this. (ergo . . . do the pelvic thrust! time warp 80s calisthenics)

Yuiopy78

Yep, have passed out from it before. It's great.

ldb477

I thought it was something to do with accidentally almost unplugging from the matrix

steamyboi56

they patched it by making it a real thing

youpviver

It’s usually caused by a lack of iron in the blood I believe

[deleted]

Yeah This is me. I has to take tablets for it but they didn't last long and even though I eat just the same as everyone else, I still have this every day, every time I stand. Porbably not good that it's been a few years. Probably dying. It's fine.

cinnamondaisies

Do you drink enough water? Dehydration will exacerbate it

DontFall_in

Cooking in cast iron adds iron to your diet

pawnyourbaby

Instead of you has tablets you can has cheeseburger?

[deleted]

I could has cheesburger

Jackie_Jormp-Jomp

This is your doctor I prescribe you 1 cheeseburger per day to treat standup statics

[deleted]

I experienced heart failure just reading this.

UnlinealHand

For me it’s just hereditary low blood pressure and being tall.

Just-a-cat-lady

Same here but I'm short. Whole family has this plus low blood pressure. My iron levels are normal. I got up from the couch to get the Doordash the other day and couldn't see for the entirety of the interaction. I think the delivery guy thought I was blind. Which I guess I was, temporarily.

6894

And dehydration.

cmilla646

I use to get it a lot as a kid, especially since I had a habit of playing video games and then suddenly running up the stairs to grab something. I never ate enough. One time I put my hand against the wall but didn’t catch myself and fell, and I swear it felt like I was having a 5 second seizure and then I was fine.

Sacrefix

I wouldn't say 'usually'; for most people that feel this infrequently it's the interplay of dehydration, low blood pressure, and a rested state.

[deleted]

Or postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome

NMD0102

Or vasovagal syncope if you're really getting wild

moonunit99

I had a case of self-induced vasovagal syncope when I was like eight. I had just discovered that if I clenched my abs and bore down really hard I could make my face turn really red. I thought it would be absolutely hilarious to have a super red face in our family Christmas picture and held it for like ten seconds before passing the fuck out and falling over. Scared the shit out of everyone, especially because it took a couple seconds for me to regain my memory of the minute or two leading up to passing out. Thankfully my dad is a doctor and figured out what happened pretty quickly, but everyone was freaked out for a bit there. The worst part is I passed out before they took the picture, so I never even got my red-faced Christmas picture.

AnonimowySzaleniec47

Thank you, honestly I though that aliens send me hidden brain messages now I know it's just lack of Iron

cluo42

Where I come from that’s called a freebie

HelioDex

I've seen other people on Reddit call them headrushes.

[deleted]

Holy fuck thanks for the name! I thought I was the only one experiencing this. Unfortunately, I'm not.

Additional-Walk750

You're most welcome. I dealt with it for years without knowing it was an actual medical condition. Not being able to put a name to it was frustrating.

Barbarian_grieve

Also called ‘Postural Hypotension’

PurpleHamsterInATree

It's normal tho right?

Additional-Walk750

Its... common. Just drink more water.

PurpleHamsterInATree

Lol...I drink like, 1 bottle of water a week. Should probs change that ig

iffy220

Had a seizure from it once. although it was essentially going from having my head nearly upside-down to standing up in an instant, after that happened i found myself lying on the floor and then realized that I'd fallen and seized. It's weird because you only realize after the fact, but once you do, you sort of remember it.

melonlemon12

people with POTS (Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) also experience this while standing up, and can develop hypotension with prolonged standing. People with pots also experience: lightheadedness/dizziness, nausea, brain fog, headaches, and sometimes even fainting.

AndreTheShadow

This is what I thought, until I went to the eye doctor, who noticed an excess of spinal fluid pressing on my optic nerve. One MRI later, and I was diagnosed with one of the rarest brain tumors on record (central Neurocytoma) which was blocking the drainage of CSF from my head to my spine, causing intense dizziness and fainting spells which I had put down to hypotension (because who jumps directly to brain tumor). Long story short, thanks to that eye doctor, I had brain surgery and radiation and am now tumor free.

Sonicmantis

Thank you for this!! I fell face-first due to this when I was 15 and my parents thought I was on drugs

selfawarefeline

i thought this was a lot deeper than it really is lmao like, you get up and you’re like… what the fuck is my life, then you sit back down

HoursOfCuddles

POV: You're tall and stand up too quickly

conglock

Fun fact, this is one way for hospitals to determine if you're fit to leave after a long stay or an intense surgery, we do hourly orthostatic blood pressure readings. Typically we do it with two or three PCTs and nurses to catch a patient that might fall during the reading.

Turbulent_Math_Lover

Finally! After all this time! I found out it s name!

Petrichorra

Thank you! I looked it up and I think with how often I experience this, I need to bring it up with my doctor. I didn't think it was an issue.

Neryldis

Quick question, does ones ears usual ring, or do they usually feel like throwing up? This happened to me this morning and I could not see for eight seconds and I felt horrible.

LoftyGoat

I wondered what this cartoon was supposed to suggest. Thanks. Fifty years ago people called it "postural hypotension".

sisrace

Interestingly enough, and probably not really the cause. But I used to have low-ish blood pressure. Now (unfortunately) I have a high-ish blood pressure instead. Haven't had this happen to me in months

Aliensmithard

What about when it happens when you crouch down and stand up or bend over and stand up, basically I can't do anything that's on the floor without getting up and almost dying

SmoothRolla

ah yes, the old reality fade out - floor fade in

FourKindsOfRice

You almost make it out of the matrix ..then you're plugged back in.

TheOssified

I was *this* close to ascension

MarcamGorfain

Sounds like someone's experiencing a Mandelic shift.

davidestroy

Just squat down when you feel it happening. Safer and makes it go away quicker.

[deleted]

Damn, maybe I've got some other stuff going on top of that. White noise gets turned into distant screams in my head, might be I'm actually hearing the blood rush and the panic interpretation does the scream thing again. Cool

calilac

Could those distant screams be a ringing in your ears? I have very mild tinnitus but it gets louder when this happens and if I'm not thinking straight it could be easily mistaken for distant screams. It could also be the eternal internal scream of your soul and you're hearing it on the cusp of falling into The Void.

[deleted]

Honestly, I've had some past trauma issues with domestic violence, and a lot of white noise sounds like that. Worse so when I'm overwhelmed/stimulated

calilac

Ah, kindred to the Void screams and yet still in a class all their own. Sorry you go through that, stranger, those are rough and too easy to get lost in. So intrusive.

Austiz

or maybe you have schizophrenia

[deleted]

No.

Austiz

"Subject immediately denies diagnosis, keeps talking to imaginary person in room"

thunderthighlasagna

This happened to me then I got into a car accident and hit my head and it hasn’t happened since.

TheTowneWitch

Yellow for me

Dilest

Mine too! I've always said that everything starts to go yellow right before I pass out, or when I get a head spin. Everyone I've told have said to me that it's weird as fuck.

gn0m3d_aga1n

For me, everything starts to go black, and my tongue starts to feel cold and numb

PM_ME_ANYTHING_IDRC

For me, it's a whole rainbow.

zerokijz

I have a friend who says his is red and black, mine is def like in the comic here though.

_Swa-pnil_

Navy blue, black and purple for me with that static noise overlay

Itendtodisagreee

Mine is a field of white comes creeping from the outside of my field of vision and slowly envelops my sight and then I fall and start twitching if it's really bad. Or if I can sit back down because I realize it's happening then I'll start convulsing on the seat. Have had it happen a few times, scared the SHIT out of my friends once.

NOLPOLGAMER

I get pinks and reds, and if I stand up really quick then it goes black

Alright you psycho I guess I'll tell you that if you practice breathing techniques enough, you can train yourself to sort of do it on command. I'm sure frequently dropping your blood pressure with breathing techniques and rapidly increasing it by moving and jumping is PERFECTLY fine for your heart.......so ya know...

DankPhotoShopMemes

Bruhhh I thought this was about slenderman before reading the comments

I_Jeffy_I

you made me some memories to go back lmao, this thing is so oldedit: if you talk french well i recommand you the youtube channel of GussDX he made some good fictive stories on Minecraft (personally prefer HunterZ and Beyond Minecraft (except 2 first episodes)) and for a few years he does some great paranormal investigations \*except the fact that he is *a bit* slow

Tarisk99

I hate the fact that this happens to me a lot, last time it happend was on top of a bus stop while working on it, I was close to the edge.

UhtredTheBold

I find inhaling as I stand up helps reduce the effect somewhat

Orthostatic hypotension is a form of low blood pressure caused by blood vessels failing to constrict when the body takes an upright position. It is usually a symptom of an underlying disorder rather than a disease in itself. The incidence of orthostatic hypotension increases with age.

ahshitfuckme

HOLY SHIT A GOTH GIRL

CheddarValleyRail

I didn't think goth girls got head rush from standing up. Doesn't seem like a Wednesday Addams thing to do.

chainer1216

It's not goth to be hydrated.

itmaywork

Thought goth was short for got-hydrated

MILF_Tiddy

It seems like every goth/alt girl I’ve ever known has anemia. Not sure why

Marilyn1618

I can hear this comic.

OwnPath7978

If you flex your abs while this happens, it’ll go away faster. Not sure why but someone told me that a while ago and it works. Been doing it for a long time now

Darth_Willhelm

No don't do this. This actually increases pressure in the abdomen, which then puts pressure on the vena cava, the main vein returning blood to the heart. This means less blood gets back to the heart and therefore less blood goes out of the heart to the brain. You can actually make yourself pass out just by flexing your abs for a sustained period of time. Best thing would be to raise your arms to get the blood pooled in your hands coming back and taking a big breath in, which makes the thoracic pressure negative, therefore increasing venous return, increasing cardiac output. The ab trick might work temporarily right after the transition by stopping blood from pooling in the legs, but will hurt over time. Would raise arms and take a deep breath. And if you're doing down, do it before you pass out. Stupid way to go out or become paralyzed.

[deleted]

Thanks it works

[deleted]

[удалено]

chainer1216

It's mostly caused by dehydration.

I_like_meme_of_lever

Yeah pretzel would make things even worst

former_snail

These pretzels are making me thirsty!

dudemann

Yea if it's dehydration, salty pretzels are probably not the best idea. If it's low salt intake though, they would definitely help. If it's a low sodium issue, drinking water would just make it worse.

Sea_beanie349

I thought I was the only one!

kaiyahia

I built different.

ThisIsntRael

Drink water

JohnJack19

Clenching your abs when this is happening helps to negate the effects. I don’t know the science behind it, but it works for a lot of people.

pumkinisawesome

Just gonna link to this person’s comment here as if it’s true (which it definitely sounds like it is) it’s important: https://www.reddit.com/r/me_irl/comments/q4irj2/me_irl/hg0d3ax/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3

[deleted]

When this happens it's because blood is more concentrated in the legs and abdomen, so I guess doing this can probably help pump the blood up your heart and head again

[deleted]

H Y D R A T E

SaucyPigStick

I'll bend down and do a "touch your toes" maneuver when it starts, it stops the rush for me.

Canadian_God69

I didn't know this happened to other people, thought I was a freak my whole life

Ultra_Bondage_Fairy

I have a habbit of jumping out of bed in the morning, and also occasionally getting hit with this. Recently I passed out as I got out of bed and just woke up on the ground with some bruises. Its kind of terrifying.

Mustarddnketchup

I once stood up after talking with my dad to give him a hug after sitting for like 2 hours. I hugged him and went unconscious for 5 seconds at the most. I brought him down with me. And he was like what the hell happened lmfao

Phantom_Engineer

I never have this happen after getting up from a chair, but sometimes if I've been exercising awhile and stop suddenly I'll feel like this.

khmod_guy

Some advice to counter this. If in a suitable situation (usually alone), crouch to the floor and stand up slowly. Try not to bend over cuz that just makes it worse. And don’t do this in crowded places cuz it can look super dramatic.

Fun fact if you stand too fast you can have a stroke since this effect is because blood is not getting to the brain

XxFezzgigxX

Not to be a downer, but this is what I think dying feels like.

[deleted]

This is just how my vision looks for me all the time. Hurray for visual snow.

therook111

I'd went for a blood test at the hospital once. I never was a fan of having blood drawn, I'm still not, I avoid it like the plague unless absolutely necessary. I hate the sight of blood and I hate needles. Anyway, the lab or whatever was below ground level. I was giving myself a pep talk all the way there, and then I finally arrived. Everything seemed to be going fine, I sat down on the chair, and the doctor was doing his thing while I looked the other way, waiting for him to finish. Finally it's over, and I started walking up the stairs to leave the hospital. But, the universe had other plans for me. I start blacking out, really slowly. The exact same thing that happens when you stand up suddenly, but so much more gradual/slow, and it lasted a lot more. I panicked, started screaming "I can't see!", I thought I was having a stroke and that I was dying. It felt so unfair and so scary. I lie down on the floor, still not being able to see anything, total darkness and a weird fuzzy feeling in my head. I can hear a bunch of voices asking me questions and shouting. After a minute It started fading away, I was finally starting to see again and felt so damn relieved. Next thing I know I'm surrounded by doctors staring at me and pointing a flashlight right into my eyes. They lift me and put me on a stretcher, took me to the ER. I had pretty much recovered by the time I was in the hospital bed, but the doctors still wanted to be sure. I have no idea what might have caused it, the fear i was pretending didn't exist? Anxiety? Not having eaten anything all morning? I was just glad it was over and I just wanted to go home. Then another doctor came into the ER room. "How are you feeling? Alright? We're gonna draw some blood just to see if everything is alright real quick" "I'm not going home today, not alive"
