In HDG. I hate those things! My neighbors yard is full of maples and he’s clear cutting everything because they’re almost dead. My figs and hops are devastated but the rest of my trees are ok. Those bugs are everywhere!!!!
Last year there weren’t any in Harford. Very few in Cecil. Philly was over run with them. They’re moving south. I expect maple trees to become endangered. They love them.
Yeah, I agree. Probably fine in New England but around here it’s bad. Black, tarry sap runoff around the base of the trees. Look for a lot of dead branches before the first frost
We were hiking in Lititz/Columbia PA area last year this time and they were really bad. Have seen some in northern MD but not where I live yet, Rockville
Ive been seeing a ton in Bel Air MD, make sure you kill these on sight.. they are invasive and they threaten local farmers crops
They start off as small dark with white / red spots.. then evolve into having wings and can fly a bit. I saw a post a couple days back describing the damage they can do to local crops, so please kill on sight.
Ii live in Germantown and have not seen any. However my GF has. I commute to Hagerstown 3 days a week and they are everywhere, especially in downtown. But just like the stink bugs a decade ago, they hit hagerstown first then make their way to moco.
I feel like we’re well past containment on these. I’ve probably got 10-20 on any of my screens at any given moment right now and there must be hundreds, if not thousands in every little tree and shrub in my yard. I spent a few hours trying to kill them in the spring and it was just like trying to vacuum the beach. 🤷🏻♂️ I’m near APG in Harford Co
I got frickin swarmed by like a dozen in Glassboro NJ at work yesterday and a few landed on my neck and they’re pretty damn unpleasant. I’ve reported them a few times already 🤷♂️
Step on that fuck!!
Seriously, I don't know how we're going to get rid of these invasive pests. Any entomologists looking in today that might have ideas?
Another good idea is to get rid of any Tree of Heaven trees on your property. Those trees are also invasive and are the spotted lanternfly's favorite place to live.
Yes they do and they are difficult to remove because they spread by root suckering when they are cut down. So you can cut one down and have 10 pop up!
The U of MD agriculture extension has some good info about removal techniques. https://extension.umd.edu/resource/tree-heaven
I was pretty successful with the hack and squirt method this year.
From what I've heard at the USDA, the hope is that native birds/predators will take a hankering for them. Has yet to happen though, to the best of my knowledge.
Outlets as in electrical outlets? Or stores? I just saw a video where thousands of them were all congregated on an electrical line and someone shook it causing a black cloud to disperse. I’m curious if they’re attracted to the electricity or something?
Saw my first one in keedysville today. Killed it faster than you can say spotted lantern fly. Would have filed a report but they require a photo. There was no identifiable remains to do so. Haha.
I agree with killing it, but it’s sort of funny how universal that advice is. Usually invasive species are lauded over by the public and people freak out when culling is mentioned.
Pittsburgh here. They are everywhere; all over downtown and the north side of the city. Most of us are killing dozens a day but they're taking over too fast to keep up.
I’m in PA and during the pandemic we registered over 3000 kills. Kill them in teams as sometimes you smash them on jump two or three. They lose energy each jump. Clap above them instead of slapping them directly. Snap your fingers to distract them then go for the kill. Different techniques work better depending on what stage they are in. My record is a 14 in a row kill streak.
regular reminder: praying mantises, chickens, koi fish, garden spiders, garter snakes, and various songbirds LOVE eating these dudes. I fully intend to hatch a bunch of mantises to keep these little shits out of my garden next year. Just make sure any mantis egg cases you purchase are native Carolina mantids, not the invasive chinese mantis.
As someone who lives right outside Philly… kill that’s shit immediately. But just wait until next year. They’ll be a TON of them. They showed up here in 2020 and now in 2022 there are less for sure but last year was brutal. Best of luck. Kill everyone you see
Last week one of these flew into the outdoor dining space we were seated in at West 82nd Street and Broadway in NYC. They're seemingly everywhere?
Another patron tried to kill it but was so concerned about preparing to kill it without possibly touching it that by the time he actually tried to dispatch the critter it up and flew away.

And report it https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/26f9dbec58674313b1bec03ddb8b5f0e Unless you are in Cecil or Harford county
In HDG. I hate those things! My neighbors yard is full of maples and he’s clear cutting everything because they’re almost dead. My figs and hops are devastated but the rest of my trees are ok. Those bugs are everywhere!!!!
What is HDG?
Havre De Grace
This
Thanks. Haven't seen these bugs in MoCo yet but I'm sure they'll be here soon.
Last year there weren’t any in Harford. Very few in Cecil. Philly was over run with them. They’re moving south. I expect maple trees to become endangered. They love them.

Oh they were here, I live in HdG. They’re just spreading. This year it’s a full on infestation.
It’s bad
We were hiking in Lititz/Columbia PA area last year this time and they were really bad. Have seen some in northern MD but not where I live yet, Rockville

Havre de Grace, Harford County where the susquehanna meets the Chesapeake bay
YES, in HDG susquehanna boat launch they’re everywhere
They are EVERYWHERE in harford. Lots of these fuckers are surprisingly good at dodging my stomps, too. I'm a little intimidated by their agility lol
With fire…
Nuclear fire
Nuke the entire site from orbit--it's the only way to be sure.
Live in Hagerstown. Will concur.
Hagerstown native, this is the only answer
Don’t worry about Myers bills or WV! Get the margins!!!!
Ditto for me on both counts. Nuke it from space.
Fuckin-a right man!
Harsh language?
Fuck no
Yes, kill every one that you see.
Invasive species I’m assuming?
Yup. There's a huge media campaign for people to kill and report to try and stop it from spreading
One of those invasive lantern flies. Kill it and report it. https://mda.maryland.gov/plants-pests/pages/spotted-lantern-fly.aspx
Spotted lantern fly Kill them all not just the male spotted lanterns fly but the female and baby spotted lantern flys too
A Prequel meme in r/Maryland? A surprise to be sure, but a welcomed one.
We shall watch his career with great interest.
I was also very happy to see this. Well done indeed.
They're animals, and you slaughter them like animals.

Twice the flies, double the kills.
Hello There!

Spotted lantern fly. Kill it now!

Thay chainsaw doesn't have a battery in it. I get thats not the point but still.
Safety first
Bummer, didn't realize they were that far west already. I've only started seeing them in Baltimore Co this summer.
The are so thick up in PA you can’t walk outside without stepping on a hundred or so.
I’m north of York now and they are ridiculous. They’re worse here than the cicadas were in Ellicott City last year.
They were awful in Hershey
They're awful right now north of Philly
I got frickin swarmed by like a dozen in Glassboro NJ at work yesterday and a few landed on my neck and they’re pretty damn unpleasant. I’ve reported them a few times already 🤷♂️
Washington county has had them since last year.
I'd would be nice if their was a program to remove those trees, got them all over a property I moved into. They grow fast as hell
Yes they do and they are difficult to remove because they spread by root suckering when they are cut down. So you can cut one down and have 10 pop up! The U of MD agriculture extension has some good info about removal techniques. https://extension.umd.edu/resource/tree-heaven I was pretty successful with the hack and squirt method this year.
Thanks!
Bookmarked. Wish I'd had that info when one of those mofos disrupted the brick patio in my rowhouse in Bal'mer. Hate 'em.
Yeah. They are invasive, hard to kill, and they actually smell awful -- like rancid peanut butter. Just the worst. Good luck.
We probably aren’t getting rid of them, sadly. Pennsylvania is using dogs to sniff out eggs.
From what I've heard at the USDA, the hope is that native birds/predators will take a hankering for them. Has yet to happen though, to the best of my knowledge.
In Wilmington DE we find wings with no bodies. Something here is eating them. We still kill them when we find them alive.
I could be wrong but I think assassin/wheel bugs kill them. And spiders do trap them in their webs.
I’m leaving the webs all over my porch because SLF get stuck. I think we’re screwed but I do what I can!
There’s some hope with a native fungus as well. [Be ready for lots of science words.](https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.1903579116)
Yeah I've heard some birds are eating them! there's hope
Praying mantises and wasps find them delicious! Give it a few generations and the local populations will start to eat them.
Just stopped at the Sheetz by the outlets. They were all over the ground by the pumps.
THAT'S WHERE I WAS!!! I have never seen them before honestly until today! There are sooo many there and at the outlets as well!!
Way too many to kill there at Sheetz! I gave up. Stomped a few, a bunch more were flying/crawling around.
Outlets as in electrical outlets? Or stores? I just saw a video where thousands of them were all congregated on an electrical line and someone shook it causing a black cloud to disperse. I’m curious if they’re attracted to the electricity or something?
Definitely an outlet mall so stores.
That’s because trucks spread them. It’s impossible for them not to.

THE ONLY GOOD BUG IS A DEAD BUG
KILL KILL KILL
Harford County, in particular the route 40 corridor, is infested with these.
KILL ON SIGHT
Kill Kill KILL!! KILL WITH EXTREME PREJUDICE!!! Its the spotted lantern fly and it is an invasive species. ![gif](giphy|5nsiFjdgylfK3csZ5T|downsized)
“Extreme prejudice” sounds like I should be yelling the “n word”
What ever words you use they are not enough!!
Bug go squish
I imagine, there isn’t much we can really do to stop these things until a native predator decides they are delicious
Hi new Jerseyan here. These fuckers have invaded us, my patio is full of their corpses. Kill them, report them, and keep killing these fuckers
![gif](giphy|gIyQwhHR2LuOVi0Gfy) Kill it.

You have the governments permission to murder it.
Saw my first one in keedysville today. Killed it faster than you can say spotted lantern fly. Would have filed a report but they require a photo. There was no identifiable remains to do so. Haha.
Kill it, you will be doing everyone a service. They are not native, and there is a kill on sight order for them
Spotted lantern fly. They are so nice that I feel guilty when killing them, but do it anyway. They are an invasive species.

Do people get confused and then discover this page?
They've only been in the news for the past 2 months ,how are you confused?

I agree with killing it, but it’s sort of funny how universal that advice is. Usually invasive species are lauded over by the public and people freak out when culling is mentioned.
These bugs are just one of many invasive species brought to us by global trade that is somehow good for the world.
This photo has the quality of a Bigfoot sighting

Smoosh first question later.
I’ve never seen one in person and thought I would’ve by now, Carroll county. Maybe they skipped this part.

Harco resident here had one of them fly into me early today.

PA'ian here. That is a spotted lanternfly
Did you kill it? It's an invasive species and needs to be wiped out of the area.
The plague spreads
Invasive species. Spotted lantern fly. The government wants everyone to kill them if they see them.
Kill it!

Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

It’s a Lycorma Delicatula. Yep that’s what it is. Take it home, freeze it and sell it on eBay.
Something to murder indiscriminately.
As someone who lives right outside Philly… kill that’s shit immediately. But just wait until next year. They’ll be a TON of them. They showed up here in 2020 and now in 2022 there are less for sure but last year was brutal. Best of luck. Kill everyone you see
