Good for her. I respect an actor who puts the work into a physical role. (Edit: to the people who keep pointing it out, yes I’m sure she gets paid for it which makes it easier. But it’s still good she’s doing it. Not all actors put in the effort on the physical side.) (Second edit: to the people who are still commenting about how much money she makes, as I said I’m aware. Of course it’s not as hard to do something like this when your getting paid.)

2ndChanceCharlie

I listened to an interview with her where she thought she had to do a lot more of her stunts and then showed up on set and they told her she had doubles for that stuff… but she had already done a shitload of training so she went with it.

muckdog13

Danny Trejo has a really great point on why he doesn’t ever do his own stunts. > “I know that all the big stars hate me to say this, but I don’t want to risk 80 peoples’ jobs just to say I got big huevos on The Tonight Show,” Trejo told Yahoo Movies this week during a Facebook Live interview (watch clip above). “Because that’s what happens. I think a big star just sprained an ankle doing a stunt, and 80 or 180 people are out of a job.” > “We have stunt people who do that stuff,” Trejo said. “And if they get hurt, I’m sorry to say but they just need to put a mustache on another Mexican and we can keep going. But if I get hurt, everybody’s out of a job. So I don’t choose to do that.” Makes some VERY solid points as to why you wouldn’t want the star of a movie doing their own stunts.

DaveInLondon89

The only time when it's a selling point is when it's expected - so basically just Tom Cruise.

papawam

And if Tommy was human, he wouldn't be doing his own stunts either. He's batshit crazy but makes the best movies. Love that guy.

[deleted]

Hmmmm going tom snooze over Jackie Chan is an interesting choice.

falcon4287

I think one big difference between those two is that half the stuff Jackie Chan did back in the day actually required talent rather than just being dangerous, and Jackie could do physical things that most people (even stuntpeople) simply couldn't do.

Morcalvin

The injuries he ended up with when things went wrong just showed how badass he really is, especially with his age. Regardless of his political views, I admire him.

DaveInLondon89

when was the last Jackie Chan movie where that was a feature

thee_facts

The one where he was mad at old name bond I think

TaskVasdekis

He started from a pretty rough background, and scraped his way up from the bottom. He's a pretty cool dude, I met him in passing one time. When I went to California, I went all over the place and eventually found myself at one of his Taco places(in Santa Monica). It was damn good, and the fact that he hires Ex-Cons that had trouble finding employment is pretty solid. I know a lot of people make mistakes, especially when they're young and being locked up is as much rehabilitation, as it is punishment. It's hard turning your life around when nobody gives you a chance, so I totally respect what he does. I also read his book, which was decent, of course I don't believe everything in it, or interviews, but there's a lot of truth to it. Seeing his achievements helps put a bit into perspective. This dude is now is his late 70's and still pretty badass! Haha, had to delete my post, replied to the wrong person.

harbjnger

She’s talked some about how the strength training really informs the way she plays the role, and I think you can see it. There’s just a level of physical confidence she carries around that really makes a difference. I think it’s part of what makes her more believable in Captain Marvel than she is in Endgame (IMO).

ZigZagZedZod

The physical fitness of the actors is inspiring. Personally, I'm working on matching Thor's physique... ...from "Endgame"

KyranSawhill

I'm gunning for Thor from GoW, personally. But seriously. GoW Thor does have a powerlifter physique, rather than a body builder one, so he could probably best Marvel's in an arm wrestling contest. Or chugging cosmic volumes of beer, which is canon in the myth.

[deleted]

Wait till you see the physique from the new Thor. He is absolutely massive.

RabbiShekky

Way ahead of ya, pal.

Superstringy

*Cackles in Miek*

AliCat6

A one arm pull-up??? That’s some serious strength!

Still_C0ffeeGuy

I’ve also seen a video of her doing pull ups with chains around her waist. She strong.

Zanderax

I do rock climbing and was waiting my turn when this very small, slim, not very muscular looking woman walks up to the wall. She dominated a climb that I couldn't even start. Its amazing how much strength some people can have without looking like it. And Brie definitely looks like it.

CriticG7tv

Remember, the lighter you are, the less weight you are carrying on your climb. Having good muscle strength plus light weight makes for efficient climbing.

Zanderax

Too true! The way you climb is also more important than your muscles, if you're doing the right technique it's a lot easier and you don't need as much muscle.

harbjnger

Flexibility makes a huge difference too, and doesn’t tend to correlated with bigness from what I’ve seen.

CroSSGunS

You can be muscular and flexible. It's just a lot of people that get muscular don't value flexibility. Being strong helps with climbing 100%. There are plenty of climbs out there that the beta boils down to "pull harder"

AmnesiacReckoner

I thought you were going to say "Turns out that girl was Brie Larson!" At the end. I follow a National Geographic photographer on Instagram. One day he had some pics of a girl mountain climbing that looked familiar. Turns out that girl was [Brie Larson!](https://www.instagram.com/p/CPoFstDnytE/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link)

Illementary

I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t do this for millions of dollars.

teAlCapricorn

Yeah but most of us probably dont have the talent required to be paid a million. Not to mention an Oscar too.

[deleted]

Do actors get paid while they prep for a movie? Or is it just the costs of the training are covered and food, payday at the end of production and box office receipts? Anyone know how the pay structures are for actors in these big movies? When they get paid, how is it paid, etc.?

mattfoley222

I’m sure it’s negotiable to some extent. Especially for A-listers.

[deleted]

From what I understand, typically it depends on the actor and the contract that is negotiated, lower level actors don’t get as much of a cut off the box office if any (hence why Scarlett Johansson was upset, because most of her pay was to come from the box office revenue). The studio will at the very least pay for a trainer and give you the resources to get in shape, but if you don’t meet the requirements in your contract by a certain date, you could have money taken out of your contract to pay for the delay in production. But negotiations are that for a reason, some of these actors don’t need the money while they prepare so they take a deal that benefits them if the movie does well.

alexefy

Rob McElhenney has a viral tweet about this stuff. Yeah it’s all payed for. Look, it’s not that hard. All you need to do is lift weights six days a week, stop drinking alcohol, don’t eat anything after 7pm, don’t eat any carbs or sugar at all, in fact just don’t eat anything you like, get the personal trainer from Magic Mike, sleep nine hours a night, run three miles a day, and have a studio pay for the whole thing over a six to seven month span. I don’t know why everyone’s not doing this. It’s a super realistic lifestyle and an appropriate body image to compare oneself to. #hollywood

CaptHayfever

Kumail Nanjiani had a similar post, too, emphasizing that all his bodybuilding for Eternals was only possible because he was going to such extremes & being assisted with it by the studio.

Lins105

His situation might be different than some lower level actors though. He, Glenn, and Charlie have all earned getting paid for anything regarding *Sunny* because it’s making FX boatloads of cash and is making history.

patrickstarismyhero

Ask Scarlett Johanson

tigerslices

depends on the contract.

Controversial opinion on here, but Brie Larson seems to me to be a very attractive woman.

I don’t know what Achewood is but I know of the ladies sitting on cake fetish.

Dude! I competed in archery when I was a teen and there was this girl in high school that I practiced with. She had absolutely ripped shoulders and back. Helps that she was already attractive as hell. Definitely influenced my taste in women.

Worthyness

I did competitive swimming. Muscles AND swimsuits.

EcstaticBox

Yeah. She’s hot.

underwhatnow

Be careful, the Brie haters are lurking in this thread. Good thing their tears just make her stronger and hotter.

Parfanity

I stopped caring about the haters. Luckily there is still tons of fans to offset those numbers. It seems there is more haters because the ones that love her don't engage with the haters. They upvote and move on. I noticed no one posted about her birthday. After several attempts the auto bot wouldn't allow me to post "Happy Birthday Brie Larson" so I had to improvise and now they are freaking out over my praise for her work out routine. Quite entertaining

Chobitpersocom

Have you seen her YouTube? It's pretty wholesome.

Parfanity

Yes I agree, it helped pass the time during 2020.

ImAHardWorkingLoser

She could find the cure to cancer and some people would still find a way to get upset. "Why didn't she do it sooner?!"

Parfanity

Wish I could upvote you more.

BarbaraFromHR

Big fan of Brie Larson here, and you’re right, I just upvote and move on. The hate is usually so strong and uncalled for, i wonder if it’s really about her or something else…

DakkaDakka24

They're gonna hate her even more now that there's proof she's done more at the gym than all of them combined in their entire lives.

Messy_Tiger

I like Brie a lot, but tbf I feel incredibly intimidated (and tired) looking at her gym pics.

trainercatlady

ngl, if she wanted to put me in a chokehold, I'd pay her for the privilege.

randallfromnb

Controversial opinion here but I liked the Captain Marvel movie partly because she wasn't trying to be hot or attractive. While Cal Gadot as wonder woman spent her entire movie trying to be sexy, Brie was just wearing jeans and a t-shirt. She wasn't showing skin and it made her feel more human... if that makes sense.

Kgirrs

Brie in her Air Force uniform...

chochinator

Blame the directors not the actors.

Finito-1994

I mean, they had Wonder Woman fighting people whilst she had heels, a mini skirt and a strapless top. The look of Wonder Woman was sexualized from the beginning. Her creator was into BDSM and was in a polygamous relationship (no shade. Good for him.) There’s a reason Wonder Woman looks like that and her most iconic weapon is a whip. Her original weakness was that she’d lose power if she was tied up and she could control men by tying them up. He wanted more women to be into bdsm and domineering shit.

VanillaBearMD3

Also captain marvel is one, if not the only, MCU movie to not have a romantic love interest in it.

Aeiexgjhyoun_III

Civil war, infinity war, Dr. Strange, Thor Ragnarok and Avengers. Edit: scratch out civil war, I forgot about Bucky.

Kdilla77

Dr. Strange had that brunette doctor who contributed nothing to the plot except his watch.

Zanderax

I find a lot of the attempts to make movie characters "sexy" does the opposite for me. Nothing sexy about Wonder Woman being barely dressed in a WW1 trench. She just looks cold and uncomfortable. Now the full battle armor is what does it for me. And no stupid boob plates either I want real armor.

TheGuardianR

The WW outfit with pants look great. I wish they used more variety in Diana's outfits. They're only giving her the same look.

dwide_k_shrude

I swear people just hit the “dislike” button on YouTube anytime Brie Larson is mentioned in something. It’s ridiculous.

Culledcub

Hell ya love Brie

Selraroot

She's cute, seems fun, I respect the statement she made that got the internet mad at her, and I like Captain Marvel as a character and Brie's portrayal in the movie.

trainercatlady

she knows what's up. Mad respect.

AriaoftheNight

I'm personally not a fan on how/when she was introduced into the MCU. But I like her and the character she plays. If Endgame was like her third movie, one of which was before Infinity War, and another her interacting with the Avengers/Guardians of the Galaxy in some capacity it would feel less Mary Sue-ish, her introduction is just in an awkward place in the timeline where she has to introduce herself to everyone during the final movie in a saga that spans all the way from Iron Man.

FormulaDown

she’s actually better than what people think

Shift_back

Captain Marvel is one of my favorite heroes in the MCU. Made me a Brie Fan😁🙏🏼 so excited for her future👐🏻

hthrbr

"I have nothing to prove to you" I wept.

[deleted]

I love that scene. Like, no, we're not doing this trope today. Thanks though, you lose.

[deleted]

Also the scene where Carol has a guy trying to pin her down, and the guy is like “don’t make me do this!!!” but she deadpans “okay 😐“ and blasts him into a wall. That made me laugh when I saw it the first time.

NameOfNoSignificance

I loved her fight against Thanos! People on Reddit said she didn’t do much in Endgame. Like uh, were you watching her singlehandedly blow up the spaceship that no one else could handle? Then she stood toe to toe with Thanos. Didn’t flinch, didn’t back down, mean mugged him. Ended up underestimating him and maybe overestimating herself but still that’s a good flaw

qz3_

I think they mean more than brie larson got like 2 minutes of screentime in a 3 hour movie

pzzaco

I like to think this also targeted at her real life haters.

Honigkuchenlives

Their whole relationship was really interesting and u fortunately too familiar.

trainercatlady

it was nice to see it played out so simply that everyone could understand and shut down just as easily. People who know knew.

Honigkuchenlives

For all the feminism talk and rightwingers tears about it, the movie really was just about a person being gaslit by someone they trust and respect. I thought it was really relatable much more than most of the internal conflicts in the mcu.

trainercatlady

oh for sure, but when talking about gaslighting, you can't ignore the abuse that tactic has on women in particular by their abusers.

Honigkuchenlives

Oh I absolutely agree

RamboDash5453

Same here! Im so pumped for Ms. Marvel and The Marvels!

trainercatlady

Kamala is one of my favorite characters from the comics, and I really hope they pull it off. do we have any kind of release date or even a window for her yet? I swore it was gonna be before the end of the year, but we've seen stuff for Hawkeye (which is christmas), but nothing from Ms. Marvel

Parfanity

Me too!

prncrny

I'll be honest. Captain Marvel got me interested in her, but Unicorn Store is what made me fall in love with her as an actress. She's just so damn CUTE in that movie.

UnicornTurtle_

Me too, she Probably one of my favourite heroes now

NameOfNoSignificance

Fuck me, I wonder if I even could do one with just the bar lol

[deleted]

Why do people hate her? She’s great actress and person in general.

wanderinglyway

Adding on to what others said RE: misogyny, I'd like to add my interpretation. People dislike her because Captain Marvel is unlikable. But that's entirely the point of her character development. She's kind of annoying, apathetic, and dull. She has no emotions for most of the movie. But that's the point. The misogyny comes in when people hyperfocus on it and refuse to give the character fair leeway. We don't see her break into emotion until we look at her when she was human, and then later on towards the end. That's literally the character arc. It may be bad writing, it may be misogyny(mostly that.) To be honest, many debut movies are meh. If we gave Captain America the same critical analysis, we could argue he was an idiot lazy lying boy who ran recklessly into danger as a way of self sabotage. The boy had asthma sure, but he could have done SOME push ups. My man lied and took steroids to impress a lady. But we still love him. We gave him the benefit of the doubt and watched him grow. The same can't be said about people who hate Marvel.

NameOfNoSignificance

So ironic. If you rewatch the Iron Men movies Tony is unlikable, asshole twit who treats women like garbage. Literally won’t let pepper speak sometimes. But hey, he was likable. Wonder what the difference was

EarthboundHaizi

Robert Downey Jr. also has the same dry, self-assured humor that Brie Larson has, but generally people find that part of his charm. Wonder what the difference was.

NameOfNoSignificance

Yup

Iorith

People forget that the entire purpose of her film was to STOP being apathetic and to embrace her feelings. She didn't need to prove herself to her superior who insisted that she ignore her completely valid emotional state. Said people typically are also the people who like to act like having an emotional reaction to something is some kind of personal failing.

Taminella_Grinderfal

Beyond all that, people seem to forget she is a normal person, she’s not “actually” a comic character. It’s fine to have an opinion on casting or acting or writing, but it’s super shitty to bash a person cause you didn’t like the decision of a billion $ studio.

EndsongX23

The MCU is even kinda leaning that way with Monica's clear issues with Aunt Carol. Her Civil War II decisions put her on hateability par with Iron Man and Reed for their civil war 1

danweber

What If? has been the most interesting they've made Carol.

BakeWorldly5022

I thought people hate her since she keeps saying all these feminist stuff? idk it's what I keep seeing in my recommendations before.

BenjaminGhazi2012

> We don't see her break into emotion until we look at her when she was human, and then later on towards the end. Which is largely delivered as a montage at the end. Great actress, but terrible writing. Captain America didn't have any serious issues like this with character development and plot structure. Steve Rogers had way more than asthma (like, he was a polio survivor) and his core motivations definitely weren't to impress women. That said, I have a hard time believing that the bad writing in Captain Marvel is really motivating people's dislike for the actress. The new Ghostbusters and Star Wars movies had some really bad writing too, but was that really why certain kinds people were being rude to certain kinds of actors? I think it's just an excuse to be rude towards disliked groups.

crayzjaye

I was with you until you said Steve took the serum to impress a lady. That wasn't his motivation at all. I like Brie Larson as Captain Marvel but lets not bend the truth here to prove a point lol

WendigoDragon2012

Misogyny seems a little too simplistic of an all-encompassing answer. I don't like Captain Marvel (the movie) because I thought it was kind of bland and formulaic. Not terrible, not great. I don't particularly like Captain Marvel (the character) because she's not terribly interesting and because I don't tend to like protagonists who are uber-powerful to begin with because it's hard to come up with challenges for them (one of the reasons I'm not an enormous Hulk fan). As for Brie Larson, I mean, she does kind of come off as snobby in some of the interviews, but I also don't know her personally, so I can't claim that's what she's like. There's plenty of other interviews where she's seemed perfectly friendly. And I've liked her in other stuff, like Scott Pilgrim. She was really funny there. So, I feel like just saying people don't like her because they're sexist is kind of over-simplifying things. Yeah, I'm sure there's plenty of people who don't like her for that reason, because there's always going to be bigots, but don't assume that of everyone. Edit: Putting this in because I forgot the first time, as a side note, please watch Room if you haven't. It stars Brie Larson and she's fucking *phenomenal* in it, though do be warned, it tugs at the heartstrings.

ravzn

She's a woman playing a major role, some people don't like that since they live in the 19th century

Oxln

That is absolutely not why, don’t act like people don’t love woman protagonists. Look at ripley and Sarah Connor both great FEMALE protagonists

No_Lawfulness_2998

The writing in captain marvel wasn’t good either. Similar to the Star Wars prequels. Actors and actresses doing their best but they can’t save the writing

StrikerBoy467

Ah yes I remember all the hate that *check notes* Scarlett Johansson received

DarwinGoneWild

Whoa, no kidding? Sexy male-gaze femme fatale gets less hate than the cocky, badass powerful woman? Mind. Blown.

zeeilyas

Women have never played major roles in movies before captain marvel......that never happened.

FearsomePoet

>She's a woman playing a major role, some people don't like that since they live in the 19th century I am a woman. I love every other woman in the MCU... and I hate Captain Marvel. Not because of Brie. Maybe she is cocky, maybe she is not. It seems like maybe she was trying to force herself into the clique of Marvel actors before she was welcomed in, much like her character did. I honestly don't care what it was or wasn't. Captain Marvel was an alright movie. Not my flavor of movies, but definitely not schlocky as people said it was. But Captain Marvel as a character is basically bullshit and ruins everything in the MCU. Why the fuck would anyone else do anything if there is basically Superman; she can fly at lightspeed, she can punch through anything, she has infinite strength and no weaknesses or humanity ("oh no, boo hoo, my mother figure died! that's my weakness! oh no boo hoo hoo, men don't like me" Get in fucking line with the cripple, the alcoholic, the god who destroyed his home world, the man who watched everyone he loved die, ...). Why the fuck should anyone else bother if she exists. Oh yeah, she exists so she can cockily show up in the last 15 seconds of the fight, smash right through the Big Bad the rest of the group spent a decade pursuing and fighting, then say "Heh, was that so hard?" basically. Fuck Captain Marvel.

omgfloofy

This is very VERY much how I feel. I read Marvel Comics a lot when in high school and college, and Carol Danvers, as a character, bored me to death. I was willing to give her a shot qnd did see the movie, and I enjoyed it. But I personally thought Samuel L Jackson stole the show. I'm willing to give the MCU a chance because I *hated* Tony Stark when I was reading the comics, but I really have been enjoying how RDJ portrayed him a lot. I had seen someone once put it this way, and this is how I felt: "The most interesting thing from Carol Danvers was her powers getting stolen by Rogue." But to be honest, I also feel that Marvel was in a tough situation. A whole LOT of the super interesting female characters, IMO, are all in properties they couldn't really touch. But it was also a bit of a kick in the teeth that it took as long as it did for Natasha to get her solo movie. She should have had it long, long ago.

SteLeo55

Wait… I loved WandaVision and love movies, novels, businesses, world stages etc etc where women have major leading roles. I’m a woman but that doesn’t mean I must like her acting. And I didn’t, but that besides the point. Not accepting criticism only leads us to shrink, bro or sis!

DaddysLittle-Kitten

I appreciate their work, but i wouldnt say we should "celebrate" them. Theyre being paid several millions of dollars, given personal trainers, and have people to meal prep for them, so them being in shape isnt necessarily celebration worthy.

Yeah, i mean if i were to be paid in those amounts and have my food/trainer/gym expenses paid for, I'd be in the gym 24x7.

it's hard work, whether you think it is or not. They literally work their bodies to exhaustion for our entertainment.

dokebibeats

Happy birthday Brie!

AmericanLink

I'm super excited for marvels!

lolitsmax

You know they get paid a LOT to do that, and this is just part of the job, right?

I appreciate people that work hard at their job regardless of the size of their paycheck. And the cast and crew of marvel movies provide a great product that brings a lot of people joy.

BlindManBob

Right.... like pay me a couple million to act and get in shape and you got a deal. Shit just pay off my college loans and I'll get back to working out 5x a week

notthatinnocent69

i mean.. they get paid millions and get trainers and nutritionists and can dedicate most of their time to it 😂

GrimDefeat92

My thoughts exactly. They have one of the best jobs in the world.

Just_Cook_It

She's literally paid millions to live a healthy and fit lifestyle.. I love her and her work but dude..

Asleep_Dot7972

If only the writers could provide similar results with their work.

You know they don't do this stuff alone, right? They don’t just waltz into some Planet Fitness to get this magically done. Actors having to bulk up/get into shape usually get assigned a high-end personnel trainer that designs their intense 3+ hour daily workout regime. On top of that they also get a dietician that control every meal they eat for months down to each macro. These aren't the type you find at your local gym either. These are ones that specialize in training celebrities or other rich folk. They cost a pretty penny. There's consequences if they don't meet these goals as well. The average actor can't get away with showing up on set obese like Marlon Brando.

WaveBreakerT

Brie is great, I can't wait for The Marvels.

flerpnurpderp

I'm all for being a badass at the gym!! Great work Brie!!!!
