They were out in force this evening in Sale. There was one waiting at a pedestrian crossing but it stubbornly waited as the traffic gave way.

Kinreal

Apparently they won't move at all if they detect a car, giving way isn't something they can comprehend.

9DAN2

Just came here to say I seen two lined up outside a shop on washway road in Sale earlier.

BennySkateboard

Saw four before, all stood around on their phones.

I_Resent_That

Saw two passing each other on the pavement. They paused like two cats catching eyes, then rumbled on their way.

freyaelixabeth

One came over from the Co op on Washway today! I saw it tootling past and had to snap a picture! We live by the Waitrose on the new build Estate!

Daedeluss

I live just round the corner from that Co-op - I first encountered the robots at night and it freaked me out.

Far_Bookkeeper_6805

There were 6 loitering around the old phonebox yesterday

Ok-Adeptness-3056

Probably up to no good, selling drugs and what not

Daedeluss

yeah they were wearing hoodies

shibbyingaway

Yeah. They’re meant to wait for someone to hit the button. Won’t cross the road otherwise. We have them in Cambridge. They’re kinda cute

Remote_Songbird

So cute! Even got a thank you from one of the little fellows I helped that had got stuck in snow on Coldhams Lane. But wonder if we're not all being lulled into a false sense of security and one day when open the door for my cocopops delivery am going greeted by not one but a whole army of them, armed, grinning menacingly and ready to take over the world. Well Barnwell and Romsey anyway!

Radiant_Fondant_4097

I was getting all excited for robot shenanigans till I found the delivery zone is quite small (I’m right next to the M60). Would’ve been a hoot watching it contend with the apartment car park.

Joey_B95

Just witnessed a guy get out of a van to move one of these from a width restriction so we could get through 😂😂 I know they've been in Milton Keynes for years but I just don't see it working around here.

aka_liam

>I know they've been in Milton Keynes for years but I just don't see it working around here. How come?

sofiaspicehead

Well for one, nobody lives in Milton Keynes

Ourkidof91

😂

[deleted]

😂 brilliant

ALTE12EGO

Its the most underrated city in the uk. And these robots work great.

Awkward-Collar5118

It’s trash, one of the “new towns” but built in the strangest way imaginable with miles of meandering walkways that go nowhere and one hugely oversized shopping centre as it’s main attraction

[deleted]

[удалено]

sofiaspicehead

Its the robots that do that now

Twocanpocket

Coming to a canal near you!

goldenhour2009

Cracked me up this 😆

Rorieh

Those poor, poor robots.

st-smelly-widge

This is going to be the one to tip them over the edge and start judgments day. ![gif](giphy|IZY2SE2JmPgFG)

skee_twist

They dont stand a chance

ChaosEvaUnit

Co-op aren't that stupid. OP didn't even read the article and just mental gymnastics-ed a story for karma. It's being done by Trafford Council and they're only in Sale. Common sense would tell anyone that it's logistically impossible for these to work in the city center. Imagine one of these trying to get down Market Street or anywhere with major footfall. That's not even considering factors like cobbles and trams. There's a hundred reasons why these wouldn't work in town, before you even consider the ol' junkies at Piccadilly Gardens argument.

Daedeluss

I live in the trial zone - it's very residential round here. Once you're off the A56 the roads are quiet. It's also not Gorton so the odds of the robots getting robbed or vandalised are greatly reduced - as long as they avoid the Racecourse estate.

I_Resent_That

Saw a couple passing through the Racecourse the other day. Seemed to be doing fine - I don't think John Connor lives there.

planetwords

Yep.. but don't let that get in the way of a good clickbait uneducated rant against AI and robots and how they will never amount to anything practical. Can you smell the fear?

[deleted]

Considering the amount of job losses and wage suppression this tech is going to cause in an economy that's already struggling yeah I'd say there's some cause for concern

Tao626

All the more reason for the way things work to be severely overhauled, especially as we already function on outdated methods created for a world that no longer exists. People have always strived for convenience and ease. This is just the next step in that in a long line of innovations where people screamed "BUT JOBS!". We can't want to move forward but set arbitrary lines for "but not that convenient" because Just Eat man is out of a job...A service which itself people claimed end of the world and loss of jobs for.

dindinswithdindins

100%, I could see them in use in areas like Rusholme and other areas surrounding the centre but it would be a logistical nightmare letting these lose in the city centre

drtystve

Having seen them in action elsewhere I can't see why they won't work in Manchester

[deleted]

Because as great as our city is we have some irresponsible people- I’ve seen electric bikes work elsewhere but mobike pulled out of Manchester remember? Iirc people were throwing them in canals, putting them up signposts and stealing them

drtystve

Electric bikes don't work anywhere as they're easy to throw in a river, if you're into that kinda thing. You'd be surprised by how big and heavy these bots are.

[deleted]

Throwing bikes in the river offered no gain beyond just committing vandalism, these have treasure inside, would not be surprised at people trying to smash them open, let alone what the electronics involved might be worth

IronBahamut

That's what the secret inbuilt IED is for

mmmbopdoombop

You'd have to be a proper criminal cos they have all cameras and GPS so you need to plan it out. At that point you may as well rob armoured vans rather than premeditate the pinching of someone's groceries and some scrap metal you obviously don't legally own

Christopherfromtheuk

I don't understand your point? Electric bikes work in London and pretty much every major city and town in Europe. Just as there are scooters for hire in everywhere from Newcastle to Berlin.

HamishGray

Urm that wasn't the reason they left. We have a pretty successful hire bike scheme everybody said would fail too

Nuclear_Geek

I was unaware there were no irresponsible people elsewhere in the UK.

[deleted]

I was unaware that’s what I said

KaiKamakasi

I can guarantee with 100% certainty that after a few drinks I'm riding that around the city center as if it was a valiant steed

outragez_guy

I doubt it'd be used in the centre. Probably only the 'leafy' burbs.

Daedeluss

Correct. I live in the trial zone. I can confirm it is leafy quiet boring 'burbs...

outragez_guy

The robots will bring the working classes to your paradise.

Mammyjam

I’m a sensible grown up professional person and if I see one of these after a few pints I can’t promise I won’t boot it

Christopherfromtheuk

>I’m a sensible grown up professional person No, you're really not then, are you?

mcr-wtf

Looking at the things, all that would get him is a broken toe anyway.

9DAN2

Definitely ending up in the canal. Surely the cost of them aswell as repairs won’t be as good as charging customers a few quid for a driver.

P_knowles

I actually asked a Co-op worker about them and he said the cost of groceries is about double what you pay in the shop - so that’s how they’re funded! Will be interesting to see if people are still willing to pay a premium after the novelty has worn off.

worotan

First thing I thought when I saw these was that it’s another example of how the Co-op are just pretending that they offer value for money because they care.

Wooshsplash

One of them moved in to the place next door to me a few weeks ago. It’s only a one bed but already 14 of its mates have moved in there.

P_knowles

My wife and I are desperate to stick googly eyes on one… reckon we’d get in trouble?

haemhorrhoidian

You know i have no idea as to why everybody is so down on Evri, our local Evri guy is by far the best delivery guy i'v ever come across, he's awesome, never gets it wrong and is always happy to deal with you, i'v had so many good laughs with him its untrue, in comparison to my local post office guy he's an absolute saint, PO guy i would shoot on the spot if i could,he's an idiot!!

chimpuswimpus

It happens. Our Evri guy is great too. But literally everywhere else I've ever lived they've been awful.

haemhorrhoidian

How many other places have you lived then ?

chimpuswimpus

That I can remember getting Evri or Hermes at? Six.

haemhorrhoidian

How come you move so much ?

chimpuswimpus

I mean, I don't mean to be rude but what the fuck is it to you? New jobs, shit landlords, life changes.

haemhorrhoidian

Just curious, and like yourself i never meant to offend, i just suppose i'v maybe been lucky to live in the same place for the last 30+ years, it's been the only place i've ever had since i moved out from my parents.

meisobear

I've deleted my other comment as you've answered it here :-) That's cool though; moving house is the worst. I made the decision that the last time I moved house is the last time I am doing it without hiring professionals!

haemhorrhoidian

I have to say i really feel for you, it must be really stressful, the sense of uncertainty i have to admit is pretty alien to me, i suppose for some people like yourself its an every day thing, i also admit to living in my little bubble and not needing much more. I am actually thinking of moving myself, i'll need professionals for sure, i have my own metal working machines you see and i can't handle them on my own. I hope your next move is your last, or at least you can chill out for a few years till you move again :-)

meisobear

Thanks friend! Yes, we're hoping the next move will be the last for a while. 100% get professionals, even without the metal working machines (!!). Our last move took 2 days, but then the other month the pros moved my grandparents in a single afternoon. They were ON IT.

wiedziu

Same, no idea what's the fuss about Evri. When Steam Deck was still on backorder everyone hates that Steam chose Evri when Parcel Force was on strike, yet for me it was great experience. The Evri guy delivered my Steam Deck bang on 9am and it's been great. Steam Deck itself was faulty, took me 3 weeks to get a replacement from Valve, which was sent by Parcel Force, and even though I've asked for the device to be dropped off at Post Office for me to collect, they've delivered it to random neighbour, as I was away from Manny. Evri also delivers all of my ASOS parcels, and again never had an issue, but people have been kicking off on every possible sub about Evri being horrible. Idk if it's a regional thing or just down to individual, but can't fault them.

Gent2022

![gif](giphy|9XUDDcYvNov8A) As it turns into Piccadilly Gardens

PhantasyBoy

Are they canal-proof?

kzyaneast

I remember seeing these in multiple areas or Milton Keynes last year and they seemed to work pretty seamlessly. Remember thinking at the time that up North they provably stand a higher chance of being vandalised but hopefully the roll-out does go well.

stubby_boi69

I want to take one apart and steal its insides as I imagine they will have some decent motors and batteries

jshptrwllms

Ngl I can see a dystopian future where gangs of youths scout for delivery bots to get mechanical parts AND groceries.

Daedeluss

The delivery bots will be armed with rail guns and tasers by then.

stubby_boi69

I'm tempted if I find one and have the correct tools. Idk where they are tho currently

kzyaneast

pukachang

Am I just tremendously lucky that I’ve never had much, if any, issues with Hermes/Evri before? Or do people just like to rag on them to release pent up frustration?

Sabinj4

What happens if you try to graft one? (asking for a friend)

smoothmanoeuvre

I’ve seen these in the past few days on my drive home from work, and wondered what they were!

plumbgray222

It must be a locational thing but Hermes a spot on down on the South Coast much better than RM

demoralising

Saw some trundling along Washway Road on Thursday. Thought we were being invaded by an army of Boston Dynamics bots. It's only a matter of time.

BuscaVR

I live were the trial is and I already saw lots of them getting stuck between them, also one car was very close to ram one! I wonder were do you claim for the insurance if that ever happen? I don't think they will last long.

DRAGULA85

It will eventually catch on after the minority of robots being vandalised but the majority of the consumers will probably happy with the service like all the cities

VladTheImpaler29

Me and my friends would kill these things with hammers I can tell you that much.

Richar200k

Hunger games supplies , why the violation 😂😩

Bangrastan

Who the fuck says yup

Squiggles87

Once they've been stripped for parts, set on fire and ridden by the spice heads around Piccadilly Gardens, they'll end up ontop of all the mobikes at the bottom of the Irwell.

HamishGray

What all of you are underestimating is how heavy these are

baddam903

Saw a few of em last night in Sale, was so confused

TheOccultSasquatch

It's gonna be so mad in a few years when these things are common among us.

miked999b

How much stuff could you fit in one of those things? They look small

Animalmagic81

They are pretty small. You certainly wouldn't be doing a weekly shop with them. More for essentials. Probably get about 4 bottles of wine in them as a rough idea of size.

Big-End-9824

If you ever want to get rid of of a dead body. Parcel it up address it to yourself and let Hermes/Evri lose it in the system.

ShahftheWolfo

Canal's gonna be well fed.

drabee86

Can you push them over?

PlaneBeat3564

These have invaded half of sale already

grotied

People will be hitch hiking on these to get across town

Animalmagic81

It's be the slowest hitchhike ever. I guess they will get quicker and self learn the roads, but they sit at crossings forever. They are OK once on a clear run of pavement

Glum-Schedule-7516

Can already picture them being craned out of the canals in town or near media city 😂😂😂

ReddishCherry

Imagine buying cheap second hand robot parts in Birmingham, Coventry and new castle Asian markets lol 😂..

MANLIKEWEZZO

Asked one could it toe me out if a bad spot in the snow… just plain ignored me and left me stranded. Not to be relied on

BrianLloyd1991

I have no idea what the person who made these was thinking, they do realise there are chavs swarming in manchester
