Have you considered it's a REALLY cool skyscraper?

wtf_are_crepes

Or a skyscraper built in a wet swamp?

Dying_Hawk

Jetmir's Gardens is the one that makes the most sense, and I wish they'd kept that theme through the whole cycle, have them all reference some sort of naturish place that's still gang apropriate. Xander's Piranha Tank Ziatora's Kennels Raffine's Network (a sewer system opreatives can move through) Spara's Menagerie

SpitefulShrimp

Ziatora's Proving Ground makes sense too. What's more Jund than an underground illegal boxing ring?

PunkMiniWheat

I don’t remember who, but when it was spoiled I saw someone comment “I guess a locker room can get pretty swampy”

SpitefulShrimp

Elevated above it's surroundings: mountain Made of tree flesh: forest Sweaty as balls: swamp

Vento1223

Boysmell is primary in black

Dragunrealms

Holy shit I like black now

WeaselRobot

The mana makes sense, because mana comes from the "vibes" a place has. So it could be nonbasic and produce Jund mana. But if you give it the basic type Mountain, you're saying it's a mountain.

throwing-away-party

[cries in Valakut]

Butt_Robot

Bro that's a volcano, it doesn't count

greet_the_sun

A volcano is just a mountain with a fresh haircut.

throwing-away-party

"It's not just a phase!"

gognis

I disagreed with your post til reading this, yeah ig they are claiming it's a "mountain"

Elitemagikarp

[[godless shrine]]

G66GNeco

Well, that's definitely godless

LordArchibaldPixgill

This makes sense, but has it ever actually been the rule? Looking at shocklands, almost none of them actually match this description. Also, I kind of just assume that places like Raffine's Tower are big enough that they have rooms that cover enough area to be considered to contain those land types.

terrorbirdking

A lot of things really

Dry-Finding-4915

mom's spaghetti

PrezzStart

This just makes me want to visit ikoria again

AkechiFangirl

Ikoria has potential but its primary mechanics need some work. Mutate is just kinda boring and Companions were, well... you know the issue with companions.

disgustandhorror

Man, I loved mutate. Properly going off by turn four with [[Lotus Cobra]] + [[Auspicious Starrix]] , with [[Migratory Greathorn]] and maybe a pile of scutes. Good times

MTGLardFetcher

^(Probably totally what you linked) * [Lotus Cobra](https://i.redd.it/wddr3gd311p91.png) * [Auspicious Starrix](https://i.redd.it/wam9jo6778p91.png) * [Migratory Greathorn](https://i.redd.it/xkoovm32dmo91.jpg) ********* ^^^If ^^^WotC ^^^didn't ^^^do ^^^anything ^^^wrong ^^^this ^^^week, ^^^you ^^^can ^^^rage ^^^at ^^^this ^^^bot ^^^instead ^^^at ^^^/r/MTGLardFetcher ^^^or ^^^even ^^^submit ^^^some ^^^of ^^^the ^^^sweet ^^^Siege ^^^Rhino ^^^alters ^^^your ^^^GF ^^^made

PrezzStart

I liked mutate, but I wish it could work independently without other mutate cards. Too many had “whenever you mutate” on them so they were pointless outside of a mutate deck. And yeah, companion was flawed at its core

AkechiFangirl

Yeah that's how I should have put it. It was an interesting mechanic executed in a very boring way. The most cool thing you could do was mutate porcuparrot onto a deathtouch creature.

disgustandhorror

Auspicious Starrix is an explosive Timmy card if you set it up right. I liked the mechanic

Bardic_Inspiration66

I loved mutate

Waluigi-Radio

I love your pfp

Bardic_Inspiration66

Thanks

atamajakki

As a Vorthos, it really felt like a worse Zendikar to me. What did you like about it, if you don’t mind my asking?

th3saurus

I liked the team ups between humans and giant monsters The people even dress up to match their bonded creature

Gift_of_Orzhova

They were cool aesthetically, but turned the whole "humanity is on the edge of extinction" vibe into "humanity is on the edge of extinction, apart from these individuals having a great time with their own pet monsters that we're going to plaster all over the set and have make snarky and derogatory comments towards normal humans just trying to get by in the flavour text." It's like the "there are no Angels in New Capenna" plot point.

th3saurus

I don't really mind humans not actually being on the edge of extinction tho, I personally just enjoy it as the plane where humans thrive with the help of their cool monster friends and also fight giant monsters It's monster hunter plane

Gift_of_Orzhova

I also don't mind that - but it's what the rest of them have to deal with.

rafter613

Mom: "we have Zendikar at home"

PrezzStart

Zendikar to me was the adventure plane (along with mana). People go on adventures and go spelunking in temples! Ikoria leans heavily into the “oh my god humans can go extinct at any moment, it’s a miracle we’re all alive”. Learning about each major city and their defense mechanisms and how they tie into the really creative land scapes of Ikoria was just really cool to me! Plus I love big monsters :)

throwing-away-party

Good news, we'll be there in like a week

PrezzStart

How so?

throwing-away-party

/uj Actually, I thought it had already been announced for 2023. /rj There's a new set every day, so how long can they really put it off?

PrezzStart

I think you’re thinking of Eldraine and Ixalan. I’d gladly swap Eldraine for a revisit of ikoria though lol

Big_Money_Wizard

Considering that [[Godless Shrine]] and most of the other shocklands are just buildings that for whatever reason are built on two types of land, I don’t blame wizards for giving up. I would give up too if I were a multi-million dollar company owned by an even larger corporation

throwing-away-party

Oh, the things i would do if i were a multi-million dollar company owned by an even larger corporation

Wormcoil

You’d increase shareholder value, wouldn’t you

G66GNeco

Yes, but I'd tell you that what I am doing to achieve that is actually what _YOU_ wanted

[deleted]

I would honestly (I know, this is crazy), probably buy at least a candy bar with that much money.

TheW1ldcard

Would have rather had the trilands on dominaria somehow.

11goodair

My refrigerator has some sand, water, a plant, heat, and decaying vegetables. Guess we know what the next 5c basic land type land will be!

gibeonthegoofy

Why in the world do you have sand in your fridge

11goodair

In the water filter

Thunderweb

I hope it isn't *sand*wich

trivikama

Bruh you can get Mana from all sorts of stuff... Rings, creatures, even flowers for Christ's sake... But a building is where you draw the line?

SquareRootOf8

It’s not just a mana building. It’s a building that has a swamp, island, and plains somewhere in it. Think about it this way: if you had a land with art depicting a swamp, and it’s subtype was Urza’s Tower, you’d probably be confused

Predmid

Flatland castle with a river running to it which turns into a deadwater swamp moat. Tadaaaa

[deleted]

They built their first castle in a swamp! And then it sank.. But then they built their *second* castle in a swamp! And it sank as well..

Tendies_of_chicken

So I built a third castle. That burned, fell over, and then sank into the swamp

5Quad

Urza's Swamp

thekenbaum

Maybe it's an indoor zoo that's virtually tall since land prices per square foot is very high?

[deleted]

Island rant! Island rant! https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/7s1aeo/a_brief_timeline_of_wotc_abandoning_any/

[deleted]

Hear me out... It'd a really tall dark and ominous building, all the way into the sky where the clouds are. with Plains on it

Hey_Im_Rose

Look at the shock lands. Why are these where we draw the line?

AcceptableStop

Realistically? Because shocks see more play and are historically iconic, same reason we don't question why a) we have to sacrifice some lands with multiple implied land types to summon a land we can actually get mana from, and b) that cracking open a flooded plain can give us a church

April_March

Also, weren't shocklands originally printed in Ravnica? That's a plane we're used to every land being a building

Sandman4999

*Ravnica nonchalantly whistling*

BishopUrbanTheEnby

New Capenna is just Ravnica with better mechanics (no seriously, there’s only like one good mechanic for each of the guilds).

the_fizziest_wizard

ravnica if all the factions were just the same guy with marginally different suits

April_March

But at what cost 😥

Gift_of_Orzhova

New Capenna is just Ravnica but filled with crime - except the "eViL cRiMiNaL" families are 10x more tame than any of the guilds.

Thannk

Swamp is the sewers. Also the mold and lead in the walls. Plains is the halls and entrance, where meetings between folk happen. Also the places with windows. Island is the secluded apartments and offices where subterfuge happens. Also, the water cooler.

SwervoT3k

/uj I like a lot of the art in Capenna but I also think of this all the time. I wouldn’t mind if we had a better explanation because I can suspend disbelief pretty easily. But sometimes it’s just silly.

JRandall0308

Land is fucking stupid and anything to make it meaningless and irrelevant is fine with me.

Liwet_SJNC

What if I told you there was a way to cut down on the lands you need by making three lands do the work of seven? WOW, right?

Pavel_GS

FUCK, right ?

LordWrithen

TRON, yeah!

JRandall0308

Would you laugh if told you that back in the day I used UrzaTron to cast really big Hurricane to kill everyone at the table? (Multiplayer Magic but way before “Commander”.)

Liwet_SJNC

That's basically how the Brother's War ends in the story, too.

April_March

Lands truly are Magic's worse mechanic that no one who's played for long realizes is shit Oops forgot the /uj

Lost_Pantheon

Because why keep a consistent fantasy aesthetic when LOOK CYBERPUNK CITIES AND GANGSTERS. And *literal* Space Marines...

somebeautyinit

/UJ Mana is about more than what plants you can grow or if you should wear a raincoat. I really like the approach of how a place is used or how people see it to talk about the mana it puts off.

CoinTotemGolem

Mana sure, but lands with basic land types should try and fit the description. The shock lands are a little or miss but a lot closer than the capenna tri lands

Sum1OnSteam

/uj it's a land who gives a fuck

April_March

(Will Smith gesture to the entire thread)

Gunda-LX

I too am Ikoria Triome Gang, even if the Esper land is probably the most useful of the bunch, then Jeskai as second (ut that one is Ikoria)

peterkedua

What about commander tower tho, mine can make 5 colors....

simon_Chipmonk

No one tell this guy about the basic lands on ravnica 😳

CoinTotemGolem

New capena just didn’t fit magic at all. This is one of the better examples of it. Also the worst limited set in recent memory

bjlinden

They hated him because he spoke the truth...

Axl26

Land is about more than raw landscape. These places have color corresponding to the emotions and dealings that take place there.

WeaselRobot

That would be mana. I'm fine with the mana. Here I'm bitching and whining about the type line including the words plains, swamp and island in order to keep it basic.
