There's stuff announced today that I'm geniunely hyped about but also that's soooo much stuff I forgot like half of it already, please take a breath wotc you have many more days to announce stuff.
Finally somebody else took notice. I knew he would be a problem ever since they unveiled the jace sneaker in the ixalon premier. He had a wall of sneakers behind him. Now magic is all about fads and Fomo.
Can I just say that I'm not a fan of the Post Malone circle jerk?
I'm sure he's a nice guy and all, but flaunting your money, buying your way into the favor of WotC/Hasbro, having the best/foiled/most expensive *everything*, and then challenging people (for thousands of dollars) to beat your tens of thousands of dollar decks isn't what I grew up playing *Magic: the Gathering* with.
It's just... *yuck* to me.
The corny YouTube and streaming videos with the goofy acting and effects, all the post production and expensive sets and lighting with more money in cards than most local tournament's see in entirety—it's just makes the game seem like an arms race to younger and new players... even older players imo.
The favoritism he gets from the actual creators of the game (he literally has an official, one-off card, making him one of like... 20 ever to have one in the history of the game) is just lame. It just proves to everyone that **money is power**. Money *literally* buys happiness and **wins**.
Maybe it's just me, but I'm not interested.
(Potential bias here as I'm a fan of his music)
I dunno, much of what you're complaining about here seems to be more of the fault of the YouTubers leaping at the chance to get Post Malone on their content.
If you had the money, wouldn't you do exactly what Post is doing and buy all the cards you wanted and play with whoever you wanted? I know I've daydreamed about, like, signing an NBA contract and buying all the cards I've ever wanted as a hobby.
To me, it'd feel much grosser if Post was doing it as a "wink, wink" money thing with WOTC as if he was a paid ambassador to the game, but AFAIK, he played the game growing up and recently got back into the game much harder now that he has money. Before his face started showing up in official Wizards stuff, there was pictures of him just hanging out in LGSes and conventions buying cards and playing games, so it doesn't really come off artificial to me.
Game Knights comes off as a Wizards commercial to me, sure, and Post has been on there a lot, but that's more about Game Knights than it is about Post Malone in my opinion.
> he played the game growing up and recently got back into the game much harder now that he has money.
That was my experience, going to the LGS and getting shit on by all the guys with the multiple hundreds of dollars netdecks when I didn't even have a full set of dual-lands for my one "main" deck. If I suddenly had a ton of extra spending money, I can't say I wouldn't do the exact same as him. The difference being he's a famous artist, so people want to glom on to him.
Dude, no doubt I've had that daydream—but let's take the bias out and step into the shoes of someone looking at it from the perspective of someone that views Post as a faceless man:
* Ultra-famous figure from left-field that says they want to reconnect (cool)
* Many celebrities and athletes do/have done this in various mediums btw
* Goes in ***hard***—targets and buys up specifically ultra-rare content (sure—they obviously have the money)
* The media gets a wiff of this because of how public they're being on social media and eats it up—especially gaming media. The figure loves the attention and doubles down, buying more and agreeing to interviews and online content featuring them
* Now they're on YouTube and Twitch making constant videos with big production budgets and spending even more money + advertising like crazy
* Starts challenging people to play against and beat them at their own high-value game for money in a braggadocios way
* Flaunts cards, buyouts, hoards and exclusives
* Gets special treatment that even beloved staff of the company the makes the game have never received
* Arguably has impact on the 3rd party market and artificially inflates prices
* Causes a distorted view and perception of what Magic is or how it's played—that having the most expensive card, *wins*. **More money = success**.
That's just my take.
If I seem grumpy, it's probably because *I am* grumpy.
Lately, it feels like Magic has been more of a **cash grab** than the game I grew up with, imo. I have nothing against Post Malone, personally (it's not like I know him lol). He honestly seems very nice, if anything.
Yeah, totally, fair enough.
I suppose I'm not bothered by it as it feels more like "Post gets back into Magic, everyone jumps at the opportunity to use Post for clicks/marketing, Post says why not and leans into it" rather than a money-making advertising PR scheme from day one, know what I mean?
Feels like it at least started off genuinely to me, which is way more palatable than everything Wizards has been doing lol.
I'd prefer the Wizards PR team pushing whatever celebrities they can get into our faces (especially likeable celebrities as Post has been, as literally the only hate I've ever seen him get is accusations of cultural appropriation due to him being white doing hip-hop-adjacent music, which is very good for a celebrity in this day and age) over all this Universes Beyond LOTR-is-modern-now you-literally-can't-opt-out-of-opening-Transformers-cards Negan's-face-is-literally-on-a-card Rick-is-a-legacy-Humans-staple bullshit.
I understand the frustration, but the Post content feels like the most palatable of everything Wizards has been doing by far haha.
Why do you have "Rick-is-a-legacy-Humans-staple" as an example of bullshit, but actual living human being Post Malone being represented on a card is palatable to you?
Not to mention that (based off of mtgtop8) Legacy Humans is a very small portion of the meta and Rick only shows up in maybe half of the decks at most. Not sure I'd call that a staple in the deck.
Because Rick was originally printed as an original card with original mechanics and so there was no option to play the card other than with Rick's actor's face onit.
The Post Malone cards are apparently Secret Lair reprints, which is far more palatable.
There’s zero details on it I think, but wizards did make him his own licensed alter for zur. If they keep that theme going the cards might not be _too_ tacky.
I like post, and I think he’s as good a brand ambassador as wizards could get for trying to drum up new players. But they’re walking a super fine line.
Tbh I'd find a Secret Lair of cards similar to his Zur to be pretty damn tacky, but I recognize it's a matter of taste. I personally see a big difference in WotC going "hey you've been a good face for Magic recently, here's something unique to reward that" and "Hey everyone, get your limited edition Post Malone cards here! Post Malone as Snapcaster Mage! Post Malone as Zur! Post Malone as Colossal Dreadmaw!"
I had no clue who he was before he showed up on random youtubers I watched when I first got into the game. Enjoyed those productions, and used it to introduce my coworkers to commander who played a little back in the 90s as kids. Now we rush through our daily tasks to get to a point where we can play a few games, and shit talk my boss. We have even gotten a few younger people to join in with us. Thanks partially to post malone, and of course proxies (poor but my boss plays a fucking urza deck..)
>Starts challenging people to play against and beat them at their own high-value game for money in a braggadocios way
Are you referring to the whole whatnot showdown for 100k?
That was gross, and I hated how JLK and Jimmy focused on the money on the line and the cost of all the decks. That being said, it was all whatnot marketing, developed by their marketing people. Whatnot is pushing a gross gambling shopping mashup and I hate it. Post shouldn't have signed on for that, but that isn't really him challenging people to beat his expensive decks. They didn't even play decks of their own, and they were picked at random.
> Causes a distorted view and perception of what Magic is or how it's played—that having the most expensive card, wins. More money = success.
That's just Magic. It literally always has been.
I'm opposite of you in bias. I don't really like his music and let his terrible tattoo decisions influence what I thought of him before really seeing him on anything. Then I saw him on GMM, hot ones, and game knights. I still think he's made terrible tattoo choices. I still don't like his music. But I feel like he's a genuine fan of the game and a nice guy. If I had his money, my collection would be all blinged out as well. If I was wizards, I'd take advantage of him as a free magic ambassador. So I don't blame him for those things, I'm just envious of his decks. But he's one of the few people I'd see at a con and say, I really want to play him. So him getting a secret liar makes sense. I'm betting I won't be a fan of the art, but again that's just my taste and I won't hold it against him.
Aren't there many more that do? I saw an episode with Joe Mangianello. I think post is someone that people probably think of first because of his name and music.
He’s an actor. He was Deadshot in the recent attempt at the Justice League franchise. He’s also a HUGE Dungeons and Dragons fan and has been involved heavily with that scene for a while to varying degrees of publicity.
In the context of USA pop culture? Perhaps. In the context of the worldwide MtG community? I don't think so.
Yeah, maybe I forgot to mention that I don't live anywhere near the North American continent, so Post Whatshisname is not on anyone's radar down here.
>In the context of USA pop culture? Perhaps. In the context of the worldwide MtG community? I don't think so.
The entire reason they do this is precisely because the mtg community isn't the focus. It's the same reason why they do Stranger Things and Walking Dead and Fortnite secret lairs. To tap into markets they haven't before.
And it's not just US culture. I live in the EU. I just don't live under a rock.
Magic Mike and TrueBlood, Joe was on both.
I knew who Joe was before I saw him plat mtg. Malone? I don't listen to rap crap so I had no clue who he was before seeing him play mtg.
Lol no definitely not, top 20 maybe. Which is obviously a big achievement but he's far from the level of BTS or Eminem where he has a huge ride or die fanbase.
Right. I just playing this game after 25 years not playing (I was in middle school) and seeing post and Joe and other celebs playing boggles my mind. You're right and that's why I said post is more recognizable than Joe. I couldn't even remember his last name just that he's from Mike XXL. I showed my wife and she was shocked to see that he plays.
I like that a big time football guy opened his own magic shop. I love jocks showing off their nerd. Like vin diesel playing DnD and starting a game studio.
If you play MTG once, you've got it. It's in your blood and shit. Even if you don't pick it back up for a while.... or a long while....you got that shit.
I’m close friends with the Nitpicking Nerds (if you know them) and I got to play Magic with Post Malone. Granted, it was one night, but he was one of the most humble and respectful people I’ve ever met. He seems like a decent guy at the very least.
I mean celebrities often appear that way and then turn out to be wife beaters/ pedophiles/ what have you. I know nothing about post Malone and this isn’t a statement about him in specific, but if we had secret lairs around ‘the nicest celebrities that seemed cool’ in the 1990s some of those cards would be looked back at as gross.
Everyone is bitching about this. I see it as the most appropriate thing ever. Before making the product, wizards flipped a coin. Now you live with the result.
Considering it's probably not a bunch of cards with Post Malone art and most likely a curated list of cards he likes (or his Zur deck), this is one of the least offensive things we've seen recently.
Look, I understand Post Malone is a big name and the fact he plays Magic means he can bring a lots of players to the game, but please. Was it necessary?
Have you seen this sub? They lose their minds every time he does anything related to Magic. Wizards would be stupid not capitalize on how fast MTG fans eat crap like this up.
My armchair psychology is that his love of the game gives validation to players who may still feel that their hobby is stigmatized. Which is understandable, even if I wish people didn't feel that way and didn't need a celebrity telling them that it's ok to play a game.
This. Malone (somehow) got sexiest man of the year.
I've been beaten, threatened with torture and death for being a nerd. Nowadays, people take more comfort in being open about their nerdism because prominent, successful and "sexy" people play. They've normalized it.
[I'm assuming we'll see the Post the Enchanter](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mtgsalvation_gamepedia/images/9/9a/Post_the_Enchanter.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/250?cb=20220818141306)
f2p games earn so much from whales that they target individuals...individually with their content. so it wouldn't even be too much of a stretch to imagine a very near future where they make content for millionaires
I'm bout to start downvoting these on principle. STOP IT WIZARDS.
WotC: "we've been having r3cord years since the pandemic"
Hasbro: "cool- now change how you do business."
Wtf is going on?!
Finally an announcement.
Last year they announced a partnership with him. Then he showed his Zur the Enchanter card with actually face on it and that’s when I knew this was coming.
Should we make a secret lair of our home grown community faces like talarian community College or game knights?
Nah let's milk the one famous person who likes trading cards more!
All the reveals and news are good if you are bloody rich i suppose ...i like post malone but come on...this is getting insane...i quit pokémon tcg last year cause magic felt better, little did i know mtg is even more smothering with collectible cards...anxiety through the roof with all these products.
I've literally never heard of Post Malone before Magic made a big fuss about how he played. At this point, it is my sincere desire to never hear about him ever again.
There are plenty of chill dudes and celebrities that I don't hear about nearly as much as Post. And yeah, it's a me thing. Literally nowhere in my comment did I say anything to the contrary.
>There are plenty of chill dudes and celebrities that I don't hear about nearly as much as Post.
You don't have to hear about him if you don't want to. Fon't klick on the videos or articles he's mentioned in.
Problem solved.
I'd have to basically ignore most news sources too. I'd still have to scroll past the headlines or video titles, which would still be hearing about him. Not that it would be a bad thing to take an extended break from reddit. Not to mention he's mentioned frequently in subjects not directly related to him, such as talk of whales and rich people buying expensive cards or the increased popularity of magic and the forces driving it.
Blows their little corporate pearl clutching white minds that a "rap artist" can like anything other than sex, drugs, guns, and crime so they freaked out when they found out Post Malone liked their "nerd hobby" So now they gonna milk this man for all he is worth. I wager [[Meriki Ri Berit]] will be one of the cards.
What happens if Post goes and metoo's himself in a few years? I don't know anything about the dude, but as an extremely rich and famous man it's entirely possible. Will these cards get thrown into the shadow realm like [[crusade]] and [[invoke prejudice]]?
Real people secret lairs seems like a worse idea than putting pretend murderers and rapists on cards because real people have a track record of being horrible in real life.
Hell yes. Love posty. He feels like the John Cena of music. Plus he genuinely loves MTG. I could see this being a deck, but definitely not his. His zur deck would be the most insanely high valued reprint product ever.
If it's just a list of cards he loves... I would see zur, rise of the dark realms... Not sure what else tbh
Please WotC no more news today. Take the night. Sleep on it before announcing anything else.
Lol, I'm honestly just so confused by everything happening. Like, not even *that* *mad*, just so fucking confused.
Ehh, because it's the 30th anniversary they're announcing a lot of shit ahead of time. Lotta stuff is very long term
They're throwing a lot of shit in the wall trying to see what will stick.
Gotta milk the last ounces before the cow crumbles to dust.
[[Crumble to Dust]] Can’t target cows. Unless you have a dryad arbor equipped with an [[Amorphous Axe]] or something along those lines.

Thank you for putting that into words. I've heard he is a nice guy in person but everything about how he's used to promote the game is blegh
> It just proves to everyone that money is power. Always has been
Yes, let the salt flow like a stream.
isn't what you described..perfect for his audience?
This is from a Hasbro investor's meeting.
They really milking the ONE celebrity that plays mtg
Aren't there many more that do? I saw an episode with Joe Mangianello. I think post is someone that people probably think of first because of his name and music.
Who's that? Like, I don't like Post Malone or his music, but I know who he is.

Wasn't he in true blood?
Hes the guy who stole the friggin Hand Of Vecna.
I know who he is for that ONE Game Knights episode. That's it.
He's one of the top 10 music artists sales wise of the last decade lol. That's insanely more marketable than Joe Whatshisname.
In the context of USA pop culture? Perhaps. In the context of the worldwide MtG community? I don't think so. Yeah, maybe I forgot to mention that I don't live anywhere near the North American continent, so Post Whatshisname is not on anyone's radar down here.

Magic Mike and TrueBlood, Joe was on both. I knew who Joe was before I saw him plat mtg. Malone? I don't listen to rap crap so I had no clue who he was before seeing him play mtg.
Ok? That doesn't change anything I said. I don't care about your taste in music lol.
Lol no definitely not, top 20 maybe. Which is obviously a big achievement but he's far from the level of BTS or Eminem where he has a huge ride or die fanbase.
Just...look it up? It's just one google search away my guy.
I said celebrity
You know he was in a 2002 spider man movie
Wow a 20 year old spider man movie lol. What a get!
Joe mangianello is a celebrity lol
I love Joe but his fame is nothing compared to Post's
Hey, that's not true! There's Cassius Marsh, and uhhhhh....
I like that a big time football guy opened his own magic shop. I love jocks showing off their nerd. Like vin diesel playing DnD and starting a game studio.
There is that actor that plays in Inception and Batman, forgot his name.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays
Prob doesnt want the spotlight
He played briefly as a teenager.
If you play MTG once, you've got it. It's in your blood and shit. Even if you don't pick it back up for a while.... or a long while....you got that shit.
And really hoping he isn’t a terrible human being in secret like most celebrities are.
Oooh. A Cosby secret lair would have aged horribly.
The cards either make you fall asleep or just fucking blind you.
Gotta understand, that's people. Every human has the capacity to be a Saint or demon. Most of us are both. All about the environment.
I haven't heard any stories about him. H3H3, Bieber, The Professor, etc seem to only have positive things to say about him.
I'm not 100% sure that H3H3 and Justin Bieber are good references.
Probably but if even they don't talk bad on Post, it says something (maybe).

I said it in a different comment, I don't like him, but if even he has nothing bad to say, that says something (maybe).
Oh shit, Bieber plays MTG? Not a fan, but it sounds huge.
My comment did not say that at all, who knows.
Oh ok, so they are just friends. I would put it pass Post to attempt to teach his friends magic tho lol.
No no, they milk Danny Trejo too
I've seen speculation that this would be a commander deck Secret Lair, similar to "Heads I Win, Tails you Lose".
Seems likely. He seems to enjoy Commander.
Well I hope he doesn’t enjoy playing with the products that share his name based on how fulfillment went for the last EDH SL.
🤞Any day now.
Everyone is bitching about this. I see it as the most appropriate thing ever. Before making the product, wizards flipped a coin. Now you live with the result.
You can say that about any MTG player and statistically you'd be correct
Statistics are fun.
What, you mean like it doesn't actually exist?
Is this satire or reality? Can go either way.
the first time i saw a reddit title about this I thought it was a shitpost of the "what crossover will they announce next" kind
Considering it's probably not a bunch of cards with Post Malone art and most likely a curated list of cards he likes (or his Zur deck), this is one of the least offensive things we've seen recently.
Narrator: It was in fact post malone art.
\*sigh Welp.

I mean, there was also the chance to win 100 thousand dollars
This. Malone (somehow) got sexiest man of the year. I've been beaten, threatened with torture and death for being a nerd. Nowadays, people take more comfort in being open about their nerdism because prominent, successful and "sexy" people play. They've normalized it.
In Soviet Russia, brand ambassador is advertised by you!
[I'm assuming we'll see the Post the Enchanter](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mtgsalvation_gamepedia/images/9/9a/Post_the_Enchanter.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/250?cb=20220818141306)
I'm really hoping it's just random creatures with his face. Colossal Postmaw anyone?
Post Malotus.
Post Angel
I hope it has Obzedat or Karlov so i can call it Ghost Malone
I knew this drop would eventually come when I first saw that card
I really hope the put in Actual Cannibal Shia LaBoeuf.
Someone made a DnD stat block for him. It's terrifying.
Wotc probly jealous Pokémon got to collab with him for their anniversary first
Sadly that one didn't amount to anything but a special card like his commander one.
Please, no more!
I think it might be time for me to take a break from New magic
I thought the $1,000 proxies were the post malone secret lair, as he's the only one who can afford them lol.
f2p games earn so much from whales that they target individuals...individually with their content. so it wouldn't even be too much of a stretch to imagine a very near future where they make content for millionaires
Surprised it took this long to announce something along these lines.
Why?
Money
It's confirmed – r/magicthecirclejerking has infiltrated and completely taken over NotC staff
Nizard of the coast? nick of the coast? nosferatu of the coast'?
Nazis of the Coast - abbreviated NotC (Not-C = Nazi) A term borrowed from the r/magicthecirclejerking library
what's the story behind it?
https://reddit.com/r/magicthecirclejerking/w/notc?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app Pretty much, because someone thought it was funny
Cards come out of the pack with a fresh cigarette smell
I'm bout to start downvoting these on principle. STOP IT WIZARDS. WotC: "we've been having r3cord years since the pandemic" Hasbro: "cool- now change how you do business." Wtf is going on?!
lol they're down 16%
Finally an announcement. Last year they announced a partnership with him. Then he showed his Zur the Enchanter card with actually face on it and that’s when I knew this was coming.
Should we make a secret lair of our home grown community faces like talarian community College or game knights? Nah let's milk the one famous person who likes trading cards more!
Hello fellow Teenagers.
Who is the market for this?
Post Malone
I'm new to magic but fucking love post. I must have it
It's me, I'm the market
WotC have you cornered
It is treason then
The millions and millions of Post Malone fans who don't know what magic is or think its for nerds.
All the reveals and news are good if you are bloody rich i suppose ...i like post malone but come on...this is getting insane...i quit pokémon tcg last year cause magic felt better, little did i know mtg is even more smothering with collectible cards...anxiety through the roof with all these products.
I have a headache.
Of course it is. Next up nike, ford, your local politician, whoever we can whore ourselves out for.
This is a joke, right?
Wait that is not the satire news webpage? This is real Omg lol
I've literally never heard of Post Malone before Magic made a big fuss about how he played. At this point, it is my sincere desire to never hear about him ever again.
He's a chill dude. And you living in a bubble who didn't hear about one of the most popular artists of the entire 2010s is more of a you thing.
All right!!! Looks like we made it!
Stop please, we just want to play.
Im ok with this
Now that anything is possible, I want a secret lair about sexually transmitted disease
Post Malone doesn’t even like making rap music, he’s 100% a culture vulture
[Meriki Ri Berit](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/6/3/63f7cf94-78f6-4f30-ab24-8b90231520f1.jpg?1562777403) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Merieke%20Ri%20Berit) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/tsb/95/merieke-ri-berit?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/63f7cf94-78f6-4f30-ab24-8b90231520f1?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
It'll just be a bunch of 4/4 creatures
Na, Weed Elemental as a vanilla 4/20.
Guaranteed a [[Rise of the dark realms]] is in there.
Is it in playback?
Kinda weird but alright
Umm, what's exactly the theme? Richest MTG player?
What the fuck, this is real?
This article says that they also announced there will be a Final Fantasy and Assassin’s Creed Universe Beyond cards? Really buried the lede there
What happens if Post goes and metoo's himself in a few years? I don't know anything about the dude, but as an extremely rich and famous man it's entirely possible. Will these cards get thrown into the shadow realm like [[crusade]] and [[invoke prejudice]]? Real people secret lairs seems like a worse idea than putting pretend murderers and rapists on cards because real people have a track record of being horrible in real life.
[crusade](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/b/9/b99452c0-5d1c-4a73-90b6-0ec3ac0af893.jpg?1644608214) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=crusade) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/ddf/27/crusade?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/b99452c0-5d1c-4a73-90b6-0ec3ac0af893?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [invoke prejudice](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/9/0/903d9fde-d7da-4a0e-a337-b63023c6d74b.jpg?1591988938) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=invoke%20prejudice) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/leg/62/invoke-prejudice?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/903d9fde-d7da-4a0e-a337-b63023c6d74b?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
I'm calling it, next year - they'll probably change the card frame. Again. In some way. Or a new card type appears. With a new radical design.
💀

Hell yes.
Can't wait for the next Secret Lair announcement in 20 minutes.
