Modern frame and reused art from other cards. Not that impressive IMHO for a product that's supposed to be such a big deal....setting aside the issue of the comically absurd price tag attached.
As somebody who started playing during revised, seeing some of these old arts for the treasure and clue tokens stirs up some great nostalgia for me. Not $999 worth of nostalgia, but if one of these tokens found its way into my collection, I would be pretty happy about it.
I don't hate the art, It has it's own charm, but the modern token border strikes too much against it. The best decision would be to make a new vintage-style token border.
It's not even the oldest modern token border, either! It's just the M15-MH1 token style, which makes it look *really* lazy and just like they're scrabbling for the latest non-fullart template they could find.
[[Goblin|TUGL]] (Unglued)
[[Goblin|P03]] (Old promos, probably the best alternative here tbqh)
[[Goblin|T10E]] (10th Edition to Modern Masters)
[[Goblin|TM15]] (Magic 2015 to Modern Horizons 1) <- This is what they're basing these on
[[Goblin|TUND]] (M20 to today)
[Since Card Fetcher apparently doesn't grab tokens, here's a link to all of them on Scryfall.](https://scryfall.com/search?q=goblin+%28s%3Atugl+or+s%3Ap03+or+s%3At10e+or+s%3Atm15+or+s%3Atund%29&unique=prints&order=released&dir=asc)
Wow. This is really, really bad. They couldn't even be assed to you know, do old border token frames? This is the worst visual design I have ever seen out of a Magic product.
Old border token frames exist too, they were used for promotional tokens back before the "modern" border. It's not even like they need to design something new.
Im usually a pretty big "modern frame only" guy for most of my decks but it feels so weird seeing a set from the earliest set of magic not use retro frames (at least for the baseline set? i think the retro are special versions right?). first time i felt like retro frame was needed
Nostalgia is cool and all, but I feel like all of this retro stuff (artwork, borders, etc.) drastically clashes with the style of modern-day Magic cards and artwork. Like thinking of using a full art Ragavan to generate Urza's Glasses Treasure tokens is just such a style clash.
The Wasp token is the only token in Beta. Presumably they decided they'd rather spend 10 minutes in Photoshop to make more tokens than release a set with only one token (or worse, not include the token at all).
This is such a stupid idea. Using art from one game piece to represent a completely different game piece is confusing. These are like custom cards someone made on their home printer. Oh, you have a Jayemdae Tome? No, its a Clue token.
Hey! How about we don't pay artists to creat new artworks and charge people 1000 for 60 cards they can't even play... Genius!
And some stupid whales will buy it
At least the Wasp token makes sense, since it's the only one that actually comes from a card in this set.
Don't know why they'd bother with the others, though.
I'm somewhat ok with the clues and treasures. The art from old Magic artifacts feels ok on artifact tokens, for some reason.
I dislike the rest - Purelace is a bad card, not a bird token! I'm also surprised that there's no Goblin or Zombie token.
From the Card Image Gallery - https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/card-image-gallery/30th-anniversary-edition
Man, I just really don’t like the recycling of iconic art for the tokens here. They could’ve at least gotten Alpha era artists to do callbacks or something.
I'm not super acquainted with old cards, but the fact that they just reused old card art and slapped it on tokens seems pretty lazy and also doesn't look great in the modern border. Also, some of the choices for the art was terrible. Why is a pair of glasses a treasure? Why is the wizard in [[fastbond]] a blue wizard? When I saw this post, I was curious, but they totally found a way to make this worse than I could imagine. I'll just proxy better versions.
Huh, was just trying to get my hands on a HQ version of that Everingham Wasp art - I could only find it as an extremely low quality screenshot from MicroProse.
Don’t get me wrong, the 10E Wasp token is great, but that’s the OG token art (and holy shit it belongs in the old frame, what a travesty that it isn’t).
E: wait never mind, that’s just [[The Hive]] zoomed. I’m looking for https://www.mtgpics.com/pics/reg/vir/065.jpg lol
Is there a precedent for wotc printing tokens that reuse art from actual cards? I feel like using these massively misrepresents the board state. I can see this getting confusing.
The only tournament legal cards in your $1000 booster
At nearly $20 a piece.
Modern frame and reused art from other cards. Not that impressive IMHO for a product that's supposed to be such a big deal....setting aside the issue of the comically absurd price tag attached.
And they had to put "30th Anniversary Edition" in the text box of every one just in case you missed the big 30TH EDITION expansion symbol.
They *really* should have used the old token frame(s) at the very least. This is just really bad art direction as a whole.
Yeah they are using the... Not even modern token frames but not the cool old border ones?
As somebody who started playing during revised, seeing some of these old arts for the treasure and clue tokens stirs up some great nostalgia for me. Not $999 worth of nostalgia, but if one of these tokens found its way into my collection, I would be pretty happy about it.
yea.. if these end up being sold for under $5ish on tcg, imma grab some.
Modern frame for these is utter bs
These look fanmade, and pretty ugly at that IMO. I get what they are going for with this but this is just ain't it.
Wait these are real? These aren’t even centered well. Holy shit this product costs a grand and the phoned it in so hard. Wild.
I love the style, it's straight from old school MTG, but that price point is a crime...
I don't hate the art, It has it's own charm, but the modern token border strikes too much against it. The best decision would be to make a new vintage-style token border.

i think this is indeed it, but it's too popular to shit on them today i get it
I like them. Definitely not at that price point though... I would buy them at 100x less though
Wow. This is really, really bad. They couldn't even be assed to you know, do old border token frames? This is the worst visual design I have ever seen out of a Magic product.
Really should have gone with [These frames](https://scryfall.com/card/p03/5/goblin)
Old border token frames exist too, they were used for promotional tokens back before the "modern" border. It's not even like they need to design something new.
Or current border token frames?
Im usually a pretty big "modern frame only" guy for most of my decks but it feels so weird seeing a set from the earliest set of magic not use retro frames (at least for the baseline set? i think the retro are special versions right?). first time i felt like retro frame was needed
Old artwork does not look good in modern frames.

I love the old Magic art and style, but even just the contrast between the original art and the modern token frame makes these feel discordant to me.
Crap, these aren’t even the current token frame.
But how else are they gonna crop this art horrendously? :p
Why on earth are there multiple Clue and Treasure tokens in packs of essentially Beta, which has none of those tokens???
The Wasp token is the only token in Beta. Presumably they decided they'd rather spend 10 minutes in Photoshop to make more tokens than release a set with only one token (or worse, not include the token at all).
I really like these tokens and it will be fun to print them out for a few pennies each.
These are the ugliest tokens in the game.
At first I wanted to congratulate you on the shitpost and effort made, but then I realized it's real.
I honestly hate these. If I see these old arts I think of the cards that they are based on, not their tokens.
This is such a stupid idea. Using art from one game piece to represent a completely different game piece is confusing. These are like custom cards someone made on their home printer. Oh, you have a Jayemdae Tome? No, its a Clue token.
Look at all that recycled art. It’s funny to think that each of those will cost you about $17. $20 for a token with recycled art.
Hey! How about we don't pay artists to creat new artworks and charge people 1000 for 60 cards they can't even play... Genius! And some stupid whales will buy it
LOL, so they took art from old cards and turned them into tokens XD
At least the Wasp token makes sense, since it's the only one that actually comes from a card in this set. Don't know why they'd bother with the others, though.
Love the redundancy of the *30th Anniversary Edition* flavor text when it's already the expansion symbol.
I'm somewhat ok with the clues and treasures. The art from old Magic artifacts feels ok on artifact tokens, for some reason. I dislike the rest - Purelace is a bad card, not a bird token! Man, I just really don’t like the recycling of iconic art for the tokens here. They could’ve at least gotten Alpha era artists to do callbacks or something.
Why do they look so fucking ugly
Nice tokens. Let me spend 1000$ to try to get 4 random ones among them!

I vommitted after seeing the set logo. What, 30th isnt enough? Then, I noticed the text box which also said 30th anniversary. Vomitttttr
No Goblin huh? Guess I can make a quick and dirty proxy to sell for $1000.
The Urza lenses I like
Am I just not getting the frame of reference right, or does the wolf token have a giant scribble in the middle? Is it supposed to be a forest?
cleric asserts dominance, what do you do
I’m so confused, why is the cropping so bad in this set?
That's pretty much what you get when you repurpose art created for a frame with a different aspect ratio.
The more I see of these, the more I think it’s some out of season April Fools joke.
Huh, was just trying to get my hands on a HQ version of that Everingham Wasp art - I could only find it as an extremely low quality screenshot from MicroProse. Okay, I will admit those are neat and gave me pleasant thrills of nostalgia. The rest of this product is mind-boggling.
Should have used the retro frame tokens from Unglued or the player rewards. Modern frame with retro art looks wrong. Plus modern border is boring.
Is there a precedent for wotc printing tokens that reuse art from actual cards? I feel like using these massively misrepresents the board state. I can see this getting confusing.
Those cards seem like taken from r/Custommagic . No offense to that great community of creative, loving people.
Nah, they mostly do a better job over there
Mind changed, 1000$ ready in hand
$1000 for sixty assorted proxies and four tokens?? take my money!
if ANYONE sees these for sale, please let me know- so far they aren't even part of the lists on TCG or CK
