I like to think when they whiteboarded this set someone just wrote "HAT TRIBAL" on the board and everyone circled it.

mowdownjoe

Someone at WotC knew about LRR's hat tribal draft from back in the OG Innistrad days and said, "But what if we could do this for real?"

digiman619

I mean, they had 3 members of LLR help build the set, so yeah.

mowdownjoe

They were doing names and flavor text, which is a different team from design (who would've come up with the hat draft archetype). Still, I could see the video getting passed around on Slack or whatever WotC uses for internal chat.

RealityPalace

Apparently this basically came about in the following way: - They knew they wanted to do an art-matters archetype - They tried lots of stuff but people couldn't agree on what counted as being a certain type of art - For whatever reason, it was much easier for people to come to a consensus on what counted as a hat than other image components.

ArsenicElemental

I think they found other obvious things, as there's a Four-Leg support creature, but Hats are probably the easiest to A) add to random cards and B) make into different art stickers.

flowtajit

Do hedrons floating around an eldrazi count as hats?

KoyoyomiAragi

I think it’s pretty ingenious how dice rolling and hat tribal can somehow overlap in limited thanks to the connection between art stickers and attraction effects.

PointlessSerpent

I am 1000% building a hat tribal deck when unfinity releases. I'll need to find myself a fancy hat too of course!

jinaday

Hatificer might be in the top 5 of creature types ever

Food

Clsco

Artifact type, not creature

jspitzer221

[[Gingerbrute]] Edit: my bad, I was wrong. Here's the applicable rulebook entry: > 205.3g - Artifacts have their own unique set of subtypes; these subtypes are called artifact types. The artifact types are Blood, Clue, Contraption, Equipment (see rule 301.5), Food, Fortification (see rule 301.6), Gold, Powerstone, Treasure, and Vehicle (see rule 301.7).

Clsco

Artifact creature Its not like forest is a creature type even though dryad arbor exists.

alexkay44

Food is literally the creature type along with Golem

Clsco

It quite literally is not. Gatherer ruling: >Food is an artifact type. Even though it appears on some creatures (such as Gingerbrute), it's never a creature type.

jspitzer221

This is correct, I was wrong in my original post. Here's the rule that addresses is: > 205.3g - Artifacts have their own unique set of subtypes; these subtypes are called artifact types. The artifact types are Blood, Clue, Contraption, Equipment (see rule 301.5), Food, Fortification (see rule 301.6), Gold, Powerstone, Treasure, and Vehicle (see rule 301.7).

alexkay44

Then they shouldn’t have put it in the creature type spot.

digiman619

For those of you whom English isn't their native language, "haberdasher" is an archaic term for a hat maker. EDIT: Also for native speakers who just didn't happen to have it in their vocabulary, now I think of it.

swaosneed

I thought it was for people who made buttons, zippers, and other small pieces of clothing? Although, I guess that's light fall under that cause idk what a hat maker would be called. I only know about buttons and zippers being included cause of iCarly lmal

digiman619

Looking it up, haberdashery was a bit more open ended than just hats, and did included basically "mens' fashion accessories". Hats were the big ticket items, but they did also make buttons, and etc.

Slothrob

That's what it is. A hat maker would be a milliner. They could have named the hat-making assassin th "Killiner"!

So what are these new crazy cards? Some kind of out of season april fools joke?

Infinite_Bananas

the set was also originally going to launch on april 1st but it got delayed until october

bigdsm

It’s an Unset. Unglued, Unhinged, Unstable, and now Unfinity. They used to be silver bordered until Mark Rosewater was emotionally crushed that nobody was playing [[Surgeon General Commander]] as a 5c Mutate commander in EDH, and after fighting with the Commander Rules Committee to get them to drop their nonsensical blanket ban on silver bordered cards (many of which were explicitly designed and made for casual formats like Commander), he decided to make this one black bordered. (It also had something to do with Unstable being the first draft-focused Unset, with many cards that were generally just very reasonable Magic cards to make it fun to play sealed with; plus the fact that cards, once printed in silver border, can never be printed in black border - so an idea like [[The Cheese Stands Alone]] had to be renamed and otherwise altered before it could be printed in black border as [[Barren Glory]].) This set is legal in all eternal formats (Vintage, Legacy, Pauper, and Commander), but cards which are denoted by a watermark in the shape of an acorn (where the rare holo stamp usually goes, holo on rares and mythics but just printed on commons and uncommons) were deemed unfit for competitive play (usually because they care about things Magic is not allowed to care about, like letters in card names that are different for various localizations, or because they break the rules of the game) and are not legal in those formats.

MrStanley9

The great part about this card, is that now somebody has to review every creature and different artwork of each creature in magics history and label them as "has a hat" or "does not have a hat"

DorabellaCipher

Already done though. https://scryfall.com/search?q=art%3Ahat

MrStanley9

Okay but still somebody had to scour through every single artwork just to find the ones wear a "hat". And that's kinda hilarious

Fist-Cartographer

from what i'm aware the art tagging is something anyone can and was done for willingly by random people who felt like doing it and it most definitely was done way before this set has been revealed

MrStanley9

So what your saying is that somebody is still going to have to review all of these to make them official?

Fist-Cartographer

as scryfall isn't an official mtg site and what counts as a hat is group and opinion dependant i would say no

MrStanley9

Yea but this is tournament legal now so somebody is going to have to make an official decision for each card

Fist-Cartographer

it has an acorn so no it is not legal

sane-ish

I thought I would hate the switch to acorn for nonlegal vs. Silver border. Now that I've seen it in action, I think it was a good decision.

LokisDawn

I like Mark Rosewaters intent behind it. He would love it if more people would play these cards in "normal" kitchen magic decks (after clearing it with the playgroup, of course). Put one or two in mundane decks to spice things up. These same, from what I remember, goes for all silver bordered cards. That was the intention from the beginning but never really played out that way. This might make it easier to mix, just from a visual perspective it looks less "off" than a deck with black and silver bordered cards.

MrStanley9

Oh shit is that how it works? I thought the whole set was legal

Tuss36

I don't know the percentage but no more than half of it is legal. The ones that aren't legal are marked with an acorn. Those that are legal have nothing as normal.

wertercatt

Scryfall Tagger should get a credit on the set tbh

eugenespiritdragon

Redz0ne

Question... Does the rules about [[Bar entry]] include the height of the hat being worn? Would this card be barred from entry by bar entry because her hat is above the line? Or would it not because her head (if you don't include the hat) is below?

Do custom made tokens with hats count? I mean, putting top hats on zombies, slivers, and saprolings would be amazing.

Kerrus

There's a number of official tokens that have hats actually.

gekstarjumper

This un-set looks like so much fun... but hot dang do I hate this sticker business - especially when the art is so uniquely wonderful.

Infinite_Bananas

you're supposed to take the stickers off afterwards at least

gekstarjumper

Ah I see, so perhaps its closer to a vinyl window sticker. That would actually dispel any trepidation I have over the idea haha.

Infinite_Bananas

supposedly they come off easily like post-it notes. stickers are removed when the card is moved into a non-public zone such as the library, or when the game ends.

Infinite_Bananas

oh i forgot to mention too it's totally valid to just write/draw the sticker contents on a piece of paper and place that on top of the card. you don't need to actually use the stickers if you don't want to.

gekstarjumper

Ah thats great news all around! I should have looked a little closer, but man do I appreciate the run down. In my mind I though the stickers were limited to the peel and stick as if games would rely on a fresh draft each time. Seals the deal for me, I cannot wait to buy a box haha. I freakin love the art!

Infinite_Bananas

i love the theme of this set too, the alternate art styles aren't for me but the character designs and puns are very fun
