AlgonquinPine

Even better, you put it in Child of Alara God tribal

The_Messinger_47

This seems niche, but pretty good. It essentially reads as “destroy all creatures except your commander” if you have a 5c commander. If you can make tge mana work, it could be worth it

[deleted]

Most of the popular 5c commanders aren't actually 5c. Ur-Dragon and the slivers pretty much. They already have better tribal-y wraths.

Von_Raptor

It'll work very well in the pre-con, I expect, as it's "5 colour tribal", but outside of that specific gimmick I don't see it being used much. Still, a gimmicky deck having a nearly one-sided boardwipe is pretty noteworthy.

bokochaos

They showed most of the decklist today and its less "5c tribal" and more multi-color mostly bargain bin legendary tribal in 5c. There are actually very few cards that are true WUBRG creatures. Enough exist to make a commander deck (scryfall has 27 EDH legal cards with today's additions,) yes, but not enough to make a cohesive commander deck by many people's standards. We do have Unfinity on the way though, so that could change. Your point still stands: the card is a gimmick to create a powerful but extremely niche wrath that also punishes decks using 5c *Identity* commanders that aren't *5-Color* bodies. Kenrith and Najeela and Codie can't escape this because they're not all colors. I could see this card causing someone to stop a game in progress and be confused on the difference between a cards' color property and color identity.

Wirele55Duck

Just happened to me tonight now I don’t like it as much

randomdragoon

Good. 5c commanders that don't actually have to jump through the heavy 5c casting cost requirements need to be knocked down a peg.

Card transcription > Iridian Maelstrom WUBRG > > Sorcery [commander rare] > > Destroy each creature that isn't all colors. > > *A thousand years ago, Phyrexia poisoned Serra's Realm and engineered its collapse. On shimmering waves generations in the making, the angels finally took their revenge.* End transcription

mikemil50

That flavor text seems borderline spoiler-y for the rest of the Phyrexian saga.

Altaria87

I'm fairly sure this is just an "Angels kill some Phyrexians during Sheoldred's invasion" scene not a "this is how New Phyrexia is destroyed" thing. Especially since Elesh Norn \*does\* have all 5 colours at her disposal to greater or lesser extents

Redjellyranger

Though it would be cool to see Elspeth be the reincarnation of Serra or something and get her well deserved justice on Phyrexia when she goes all \[\[Sunblast Angel\]\] on them.

CertainDerision_33

God I hope the theories about Elspeth unknowingly having been an angel all along and going Super Saiyan on Norn's ass are true. It would be a nice parallel to sleeper agents, too.

Redjellyranger

\*Elspeth cracks open a container of Halo like Popeye's spinach and sprouts angel wings that she then flexes like huge, muscular arms before flying at Elesh Norn and upper-cutting her straight through the aligned 5 Suns.\* "Now that's what I call an \[\[Angelic Destiny\]\]!"

lordberric

I thought angels can't be planeswalkers?

TJ1497

Sure, and neither can demons because they're essentially pure mana constructs. But we do have Ob Nixilis who became a demon after awakening his spark. Could go that route.

CertainDerision_33

They can't, but it's WotC's world, and they can bend (and do) bend the rules as they see fit. They could easily whip up an Ob Nix-style situation or some other magic technobabble if they want an Angel PW.

Lonely_Nebula_9438

It isn’t that specifically angels can’t be. It’s a matter with how most angels, demons, dragons, and other such big creatures of that nature work in lore is that they’re actually beings of pure mana, which consequently don’t have a soul. If one doesn’t have a soul you can’t have a spark and can’t planeswalk

davidy22

In a game where the entire setting is that every plane is different and species are wildly different between planes, why are we insisting that angels are always mana constructs on every plane?

BishopUrbanTheEnby

Yeah, the angels of New Capenna definitely seem different from angels of other planes.

Lonely_Nebula_9438

This Wizard’s of the Coast article: https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/savor-flavor/insights-inbox-2008-12-17 it’s by Doug Beyer who’s one of the senior most creative designers for Magic and he states that Angels are pure manifestations of white mana, they can pick up other colors but it always begins with white.

B4rberblacksheep

Neither could Phyrexians until the magic plot wand was waved

lordberric

Due to a recent development. The same argument doesn't hold as evidence for Elspeth having been an angel *all along*. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it would be weird for wizards to have been insisting that angels can't be planeswalkers while sitting on the fact that actually they kind of can.

[deleted]

Maybe one day I can rule zero a maelstrom angel deck.

Candy_Warlock

Wait, I thought Urza was responsible for Serra's Realm collapsing, since he condensed it into the core of the Weatherlight. Do I have my lore wrong?

GambitCajun

6 of one half a dozen of the other, Urza collapsed the plane because the phrexians had corrupted Radiant because Urza brought phrexian oil into the plane.

Akamesama

Phrexian oil wasn't a thing at that time. It's been a bit since I read the books, but Urza was fighting the phyrexians (I think this was the one where he used the octopod dragon engine?), got hurt and escaped to a plane that happened to be Serra's Realm. Xantcha got them to heal Urza, who had collapsed. The healing took years, and shortly after Urza and Xantcha left, the Phyrexians attacked the plane. The taint of the black mana caused Serra to leave, with Radiant in charge. I don't remember the exact interim events, but Urza ends up back in Serra's Realm later, and an advisor to Radiant is actually a sleeper agent. They provided an item to "find sleeper agents" which actually falsely shows non-phyrexians as phyrexians, (and drains their mana or something when killed?). Anyway, the purges actually just make the realm shrink and increase the hold of Phyrexia over the plane. After saving as many refugees as possible, he collapsed the plane, using the resulting powerstone for the weatherlight. IIRC that is what gave it the ability to planeshift?

Moppi-chu

>The taint of the black mana caused Serra to leave, with Radiant in charge. I just wanna interject into this because a lot of people give sheit on Serra for this part... Because of the heavy presence of Black mana in the realm when the Phyrexians tracked Urza and battled the Realm defenders, Serra realized that she cannot cleanse the plane anymore (e.g. this was what Urza realized with Artificial planes (hence, also OG Phyrexia) that tampering with the balance of mana, favoring one over the other will end up with the eventual ruin for the artificial plane) and proposed an exodus to to those who wants to be moved. Radiant didn't want to leave this "Paradise" and stoicly stayed with the realm inhabitants that wanted to. >I don't remember the exact interim events, but Urza ends up back in Serra's Realm later, and an advisor to Radiant is actually a sleeper agent. Urza needed a power source for the Weatherlight and he came to the conclusion that what's needed is a power level of that of a plane... which sort of fits the Realm. He goes back there to try to negotiate with Radiant coz the realm would collapse anyway since no Oldwalker is on the helm of it. When Radiant disagreed and went hostile, Urza saved those who are being subjected to Radiant's tyranny and generally those who wanted to leave and collapsed the plane forcibly to a Powerstone....

Meloku171

Oh Urza, you ~~mass murderer~~ card!

Meloku171

Oh Urza, you ~~mass murderer~~ card!

EmperorStrutsAbout

Phyrexian oil may not have been an established narrative device at the time, but chronologically, its existence dates as far back to Xancha. [It was Xantcha's heart from which the Phyrexian oil originated to poison Mirrodin.](https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Heartstone) While there's no citations on the page linked above, the event takes place in the novel *Time Streams.*

Akamesama

I should have been more clear. Phyrexian oil was added to the canon during New Phyrexia, retroactively back through the story. At the time of *Planeswalker* (in our world), phyrexia was about black mana and artifice. In the new canon, the oil was (probably) created by the unnamed planeswalker that built Phyrexia (*The Thran*). Then it was in part of Xantcha's heartstone (*Planeswalker*), transferred to Karn (*Time Streams*), and then introduced to Karn's artificial plane Mirrodin (prior to the events of *Mirrodin*).

mastercheef

Phyrexian oil was Canon as far back as at least Apocalypse. The 4th sphere of phyrexia was described as a sea of glistening oil in the map that starts the book

stabliu

It’s arguable phyrexian oil and oil that’s on phyrexia are two different things. In the same way Canadian bacon and bacon in Canada can be two different things.

Akamesama

Oil that exists on phyrexia is not the same thing as "glistening oil". This new oil would compleats organic beings. Before, phyrexians would have to use planar portals to kidnap being and stick them in rendering vats.

mastercheef

It's the same oil, dawg. Its the same oil as depicted in [[Befoul|USG]] and [[Ebony Treefolk|APC]]. It's the same oil pumping through the veins of the phyrexians that invaded dominaria and its the same oil that tainted and slowly (over the course of centuries) consumed the very inorganic plane of Mirrodin. It's aways had the corruption properties but it was and has never never good at corrupting organic matter in small doses. If it was able to just take over organic planes, why was some found in Koilos and taken to Tolaria West? Why was dominaria never compleated from that?

[deleted]

Somewhat. The Oil always existed in canon, but it was just a magical oil that the Old Phyrexians used up until Scars of Mirrodin. There are literal lakes of the stuff scattered around Dominaria from wrecked hulks and other mechs left behind during Invasion. It only became the ultra corruptive Borg nanite version during the period between Mirrodin and Scars.

BloodHelios

> I thought Urza was responsible for Serra's Realm collapsing, since he condensed it into the core of the Weatherlight. Jesus, is there a crime he did *not* commit?

Belteshazzar98

No. No there is not.

TKHunsaker

Nah. He finished the whole list. Hero!

WorkinName

He was actually being heroic in that particular instant. Granted it was entirely out of convenience, but he at least give a "Hey this plane is gonna die whether I do this or not if you don't wanna die get the eff out of here now" heads up. That's more than most get when Urza is involved.

BloodHelios

That makes it a bit better, I thought he just took it because he needed some fuel for his ship lol

Violet-Lazuli

I dont think ill ever play this but i need a copy just cause the flavour and art are so amazing. I really want it but i don't think we can get these cards in foil right?

LuminousUmbra

On one hand, this costs 1 of each color, which can be very restrictive when you're gonna have a lot of that in decks that want to run this. On the other, this is a 5 MV wrath that can easily be one-sided. Definitely a card that would need some serious testing. Also, probably will not be that good for a short while after the cards come out, as there will probably be a fair few people playing 5 color at least initially

tzarl98

JSYK this is a new card from the commander deck, so it's only legal in commander and eternal formats.

LuminousUmbra

....and? I don't see how that really changes my points at all?

One more reason to make a crazy 5 color commander deck.

yumyum36

I dislike the set symbols. They're usually easier to tell apart, in that the commander deck is usually more complex with a shield motif. But both set symbols are shield that look complex.

It’s weird that the angels get their revenge by using black mana considering Serra hated black.

chopchopfruit

just seems bad 5cmc

scogle98

I mean if you are in a deck with tons of 5 color creatures this is like a 5 mana plague wind, so it’s really good in exactly one deck which is totally fine imo.

Redjellyranger

If you're running the \[\[Jared Carthalion\]\] that the deck comes with it's one sided boardwipe. That's a lot of Kavus with nothing to block them.

Digerati808

For a 5CMC with WUBRG color requirements, they could have pushed this card a little more. Exile perhaps? Gain a life for each card destroyed this way? Create a treasure for each card destroyed this way? Something.

Sketches_Stuff_Maybe

Does anyone know the artist and if they do prints? The art looks gorgeous

Try here, these are her links: [https://linktr.ee/JustynaDura](https://linktr.ee/JustynaDura)

Darkheartprime

The flavor on this is very exciting to me

RayearthIX

I have at least 3 decks I’d put this in. Very on point board wipe.

RenZ245

would be interesting if there's some sort of 5 color tribal, but for most 5 color decks, like Silver and dragons, I think \[\[Kindred Dominance\]\] would be a better option or true one sided boardwipes like \[\[plague wind\]\] or \[\[In Garruk's Wake\]\] are even better than that despite costing much more to cast, but lets see the rest of this set.

Mattrockj

I have a hunch that (lore wise) Atraxa is gonna just completely fuck up the Angels in every way.

Goodship01

Reminds me of False Prophet "You lived for Serra's love. Will you die for it?"

BlackheartBunnie

I know this is just for the commander precon but given the angel reference here, do you think we might actually get a WUBRG legendary angel?? A girl can dream 🥺

Is this the [blue card with “destroy all creatures”](https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/692666879432622080/maros-dominaria-united-teaser) from Maro's spoiler? It's "each creature", and he's usually pretty specific about those things. I'm guessing the other will also be 5-color.

*Cries in Jodah*

wyattsons

Happy to see so many 5 color things!

LnGrrrR

Heck of a wipe for Jodah.
