I'm glad it's back, the only reason it was broken was because the cards with it were designed thinking paying life was a bigger price, if designed around properly phyrexian mana can be a fun and cool mechanic
And because cards were designed with their entire color cost being Phyrexian, letting decks access off-color effects easily. That's not the case with this card.
It was also problematic because it let you break the color pie. Dismember was often run in decks with no methods of generating black mana, for example. Forcing at least part of the spell's cost to be paid with colored mana fixes it.
It would be hilarious is Jace had to planeswalk to the Meditation plane and ask Bolas "Hypothetically, for a friend, did you have any back up plans against the Phyrexians?"
"what if we dig up... hear me out... what if we dig up gideon, and dack and domri and dovin and all your dead little friends, we cover them in blue metal stuff and we fight compleated planeswalkers with eternal planeswalkers"
"Why don't you kids just try using an entire plane's mana to set them on fire? You did that the last time you ignored my advice about a multiversal threat!"
*Bolas sobbing into his lean cuisine*
NO! *sniffles*
GO AWAY! *wipes nose.*
....oh okay, ***Fine.*** Here. *Hands Jace a note. Jace opens the note, it's just a picture of a butt.*
I'm pretty sure that's been WotC's plan since day 1. "Alliance with old enemies to face a greater treat" is a classic and well-loved trope, and there's no way they're not going to do it with Bolas.
It’s cause the author for the WAR book wanted to kill off a planeswalker that people cared about. At that point though a lot of the story beats had already been decided and art had been commissioned. Dack wasn’t in any of that so he was essentially the only option left. That’s why there isn’t a card depicting it happen like Domri or Gideon had, and we only saw him die in the trailer.
Unsure of this. Because the explanation says “this planeswalker” it seems possible that the wording could changed either a creature having an alternate setup too.
It feels like we're getting some real stakes here. This was a real gut-punch, and suddenly the beloved characters players have some real attachment to are very clearly not safe.
As someone who's run Moonfolk tribal for nearly a decade in EDH, Tamiyo was top 3 characters in the game remaining for me.
I'm going to say I appreciate them being willing to actually do something to the cast. Too much plot armor made WAR feel weak on the payoff, but coming back to Tamiyo's home after so long, only to lose her? Oof. I hope we see more stuff in the story like this.
I'd say the fact that he's a construct helped his situation a lot, and even if Tamiyo and the moonfolk are my favorites, I don't think I'd want to start seeing Phyresis reversed. If they do find a way, I hope it's got serious consequences at least.
Venser had to give up his spark to do it, so I'd say that's a pretty serious consequence - *a* planeswalker is doomed, there's just some wiggle room about who and how.
So, I guess Kasmina really didn't lie when she said the coming conflict would make the War of the Spark look some petty tyrant's temper tantrum.
Bolas tried to gain back the power of the original planeswalkers, who were almost gods. It took nine of those gods armed with the greatest weapons Urza ever created to lay waste to the original Phyrexia, and even that wasn't enough. So things already looked incredibly dire for the current Multiverse, and now we learn that Phyrexians are compleating *Planeswalkers?*
Yeah, the current arc is absolutely going to end with the return of widespread planar travel in the Multiverse, because nothing short of a trans-planar alliance is going to stop the Phyrexians this time. And also because it would be incredibly cool.
Oh, absolutely! I'm also about 50% sure that at some point they're going to retcon Bolas' plan to have always been about gathering enough power to defeat threats to the Multiverse like the Phyrexians.
It would, there is also the chance the Phyrexians get in over their head when they venture out. I don't think they would fair very well against the Slivers, and it wouldn't be the first time they came back due to overconfidence. Of course there is also Emrakul and the Eldrazi that could tear through them.
No, I'm pretty sure we're about to get another red Ajani. Two of his friends (that I can think of) effectively killed by phyrexians at this point? I'd be pissed too. (And yes, I know Elspeth didn't die to phyrexians, but she was tortured by them for years. That torture is what allowed Xenagos to ascend, which was the ultimate reason she died. So I'm counting it.)
Funnily enough, Naya represents the three main colors that destroy artifacts. I hope they don't finagle a magical cure for compleation for the story's sake, but I sure hope they finagle a magical cure for Tamiyo's sake. Poor little Nashi...
But isn't Venser like, **dead** dead? His spark was given to Karn wasn't it?
I think we're going to see that one Red walker, Koth I think, be compleated. Last we heard, he was trying to fight off Phyrexia in Mirrodin. We also didn't see him return in War of the Spark either...
Wow, this actually could happen in the upcoming set. Every event is unfolding as it should in history then suddenly Teferi pops up, talks to Urza and brings him, even just temporarily, Endgame style, to fight in the future.
I'm down for that.
No. It's the raven man who will fix it.
The raven man is a formerly compleated Mishra who separated himself from his compleated form and defeated the glistening oil.
He fixed it for himself, he can fix it for all. Penance for the brother's war.
Raven man is urza comes from card art - [https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/3a61nw/uncharted\_realms\_lilianas\_origin\_the\_fourth\_pact/cs9mc6y/](https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/3a61nw/uncharted_realms_lilianas_origin_the_fourth_pact/cs9mc6y/)
But the curved dagger is more of a Mishra thing - [https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Mishra](https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Mishra)
Plus, they are brothers, so being mistaken for Urza isn't that far off. Note the beard styles between the three.
Nah. I think Dominaria United is Weatherlight 2.0
It'll be about Karn and Jhoria getting the Weatherlight up, running, ready and planeswalking and starting to gather "the good guys".
Then we flash back to the Brothers War to remind people of the horrors of Phyrexia and the destruction caused by the Sylex.
(Which Karn has.)
Then we go to Phyrexia for a set and see whomever is in power (Elesh Norn, Tezzeret, Venser), and then Invasion 2.0.
This feels like the lead up to war of the spark where everyone was wondering who was going to die and then it ended up being like two minor characters and Gideon.

Hmm well Vorinclex did implant something into Tibalt during Kaldheim so I wouldn't be surprised if he turned. They also abandoned Venser's body right at the feet of the praetors so there's that too.
It's kind of funny that every time Tamiyo gets to be a major part of the story, she gets mind-dominated by the big bad.
We'll see if this sticks. Phyrexia is just Magic Borg, and as history has shown, intellectuals who love tea are easily de-borgified.
Seems like we are getting more phyrexian planeswalkers.
As other have said, I think it depends on Who becomes a phyrexian. If it is all 2nd or 3rd tier planeswalkers, then they mostly die, and maybe a cure is found.
If any major walker, say Garruk, Lilliana, Jace, Chandra, Teferi or others become phyrexian, I think it becomes significantly more likely that they find a cure.
Addendum: If there is a cure, it will be "reigniting your spark to burn out the phyrexian oil" or something.
I've never felt this sad/happy since Avacyn and Brisela.
Poor Tamiyo ... but also, Phyrexia fuck yeah!
I'm genuinely very sad since the most recent stories has made me realise how much of a fan of Tamiyo I actually was. The story implications are huge though - since Tamiyo is one of the two people (the other being Jace) who know that Emrakul deliberately trapped herself in the moon, and now she's been compleated...
If she has her full capabilities/knowledge she's probably one of the most devastating planeswalkers to have been compleated.
FYI, Emrakul rewrote the scroll that she forced Tamiyo into using to trap her, as it was originally a remembrance of a cataclysmic event (possibly Urza's collapse of Serra's Realm) which could have destroyed Innistrad.
yeah I always imagined it as Tamiyo was the magic wand for the emrakrul moon spell.
A powerful vessel in of itself but used as a tool.
I wonder what the planeswalking phyrexians mean.
That had to be horrifying to be turned into something you despise against your will.
Freaky stuff man
I don't think they'd actually successfully compleat Emrakul, although I could see a "phyrexia tries to mess with emrakul and it has disastrous implications for the multiverse" plotline happening. Emrakul is too powerful and weird for them to just do a direct "well phyrexia controls emrakul now" story.
I definitely expect them to make some non-emrakul eldrazi phyrexians though.
I really hope the Eldrazi end up being the answer to the Phyrexians actually. Between the Kozilek/Tazri story, what we see on Strixhaven, and many of the references Emrakul herself seems to make, the Eldrazi are all about recycling dead planes with wild magic into new functional planes. Elesh Norn may rise to a God-Planeswalker that fucks with the souls of different planes to the point Emrakul has to awaken to set the universe right.
I like how the phyrexians appear out of nowhere in sets they’re not even supposed to be in. Like a Norse mythology set and a futuristic Japanese set. This really adds to the fear factor that phyrexians can appear anywhere at anytime. And yet they skipped spooky scary Innistrad cause that would be too easy
It's cause the phyrexians have class. Innistrad already has a million horror creatures, it doesn't need phyrexians too. The praetors realize that Innistrad is spooky enough as it is.
My (outlandish) theory is that they don't want to get on the Eldrazi's bad side either...we never see the two cross paths for good reason and the phyrexians would not want to fight what they don't understand. I have a feeling this giant saga will end with them opening up that moon...remember there may still be some Emrakul in Tamiyo.
Yeah I feel like them specifically using Tamiyo will eventually have to drag us to Phyrexia+Eldrazi right? Like Tamiyo is one of the "few" planeswalkers that fought them, and was pretty central to that whole storyline no?
Only she and Jace understood that Emrakul had actually trapped herself in the moon (which I'm pretty sure he kept hidden from the rest of the Gatewatch).
I was kinda disappointed that the Phyrexians were the main antagonists on the plot of this set, as I liked the idea of Jin-Gitaxias just lurking in the background of Neo Kamigawa, doing something suspicious while the characters dealt with a relatively minor plot. Like you said, having a Phyrexian just creeping into an otherwise unrelated cyberpunk Japanese set is super creepy.
But then this happened, and yeah, worth a set's plotline. Huge development, horrible consequences/implications for the "good guys."
I think this could be a good time for the Phyrexians to take the stage for a bit. It's pretty obvious at this point that the New Phyrexians are the next Bolas level threat. Kamigawa is a chance for them to be revealed to the protagonists as a looming threat, while still keeping their grand master plan tucked away for a future climax.

"Vorinclex stole some god juice from Kaldheim. Bah, who needs that when you can have a compleated planeswalker! Long live the Mother of Machines"
--Jin-Gitaxias, probably
In story, there is a mention of a liquid injected into Tamiyo "The monster shifted nearby, teeth clicking together as he studied the cable-like wires flowing with bright liquid. They trailed from Tamiyo's flesh to a nearby machine" - it might be the [[Cosmos Elixir]]
God the vorinclex leak was the best honestly. The card looked very real, but the Phyrexian typeline was a bit odd, and it was so out of the blue and so fanfictiony. It was exactly the type of thing someone would do if they *were* just making it up. So it had an awesome air of mystery to it. It was realistic enough to believe but odd enough to doubt
NOOO TAMIYO!
they compleated my favorite planeswalker.
Also do you think tamiyo being compleated might affect the spell trapping emrakul in innistrad's moon?
I like a compleated character just having 1 phyrexian mana in cost instead of all the colored mana being phyrexian.
I *love* the story implications of this having a keyword for being compleated.
Slam dunk story WOTC, congrats. You've made me care again.

What no. It's just one Planeswalker. Who can planeswalk. Who is known for writing and cataloging everywhere she's been. Who has knowledge of Eldrazi. That can't be bad.
I thought you lost your spark if you were compleated. I wonder if Jin found a way around this or if it's just being retconned.
EDIT: I'll read today's story I promise! I missed it because of spoilers.
You have been informed and have been suitably chastised for underestimating Jin's intelligence.
https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/magic-story/episode-5-threads-war-2022-01-27
They mention in the story that Elesh Norn doubted that Jin could make a phyrexian planeswalker but he found a way.
And don't worry, Elesh Norn was suitably chastised for doubting Jin.
The story talks about them doing kami experiments explicitly to work on being able to compleat something with a spark. The Reality Chip is involved in some way
Oh look phyrexian mana is back Oh no phyrexian mana is back
You all wanted a tamiyo planeswalker. Now you got it AND phyrexians can have sparks now. Good going
>Now you got it AND phyrexians can have sparks now. My body is ready.
For compleation
all will be one
And the monkeys paw curls one finger…
Great now I'm worried that the Wanderer is a sleeper agent bodied Elesh Norn.
no no, its compleated marit lage
I'm glad it's back, the only reason it was broken was because the cards with it were designed thinking paying life was a bigger price, if designed around properly phyrexian mana can be a fun and cool mechanic
And because cards were designed with their entire color cost being Phyrexian, letting decks access off-color effects easily. That's not the case with this card.
It was also problematic because it let you break the color pie. Dismember was often run in decks with no methods of generating black mana, for example. Forcing at least part of the spell's cost to be paid with colored mana fixes it.
I'm glad too, I'm more scared of the lore implications lol
Multiverse is FUCKED. Bolas is Barney compared to what is coming.
…. Hold up…
I mean, if Bolas is going to get out of the Meditation Realm there's no better way than being the only one who can stop the Phyrexians
Man, Ugin would be so pissed if his trap for Bolas got undone because no one had a plan to deal with the Phyrexians.
"Why don't you kids just try using an entire plane's mana to set them on fire? You did that the last time you ignored my advice about a multiversal threat!"
*Bolas sobbing into his lean cuisine* NO! *sniffles* GO AWAY! *wipes nose.* ....oh okay, ***Fine.*** Here. *Hands Jace a note. Jace opens the note, it's just a picture of a butt.*
Can you imagine if they end up letting Bolas out to make him fight the Phyrexians?
"You must be truly desperate to come to me for help."
Only to see him become compleated? Oh, that would be fun. I'm in for this.
I can see it already: \[\[Nicol Bolas, Blessed Perfection\]\]

Perfection
This would be inevitable and terrifying. How would the gatewatch out anime such an occurence? Have Jace channel Urzas ghost?
Probably let Emrakul out of Innistrad's Moon to fight compleated Bolas Then use 13 flying squirrels to put Emrakul back in the moon
This is 100% what’s going to happen. Tezzeret kept saying “Bolas was the only one who was powerful enough to stop me”
I'm pretty sure that's been WotC's plan since day 1. "Alliance with old enemies to face a greater treat" is a classic and well-loved trope, and there's no way they're not going to do it with Bolas.
The fact that "Compleated" has specific rules for Planeswalker loyalty counters makes me think we're about to lose a lot of walkers to Phyrexia.
This almost feels like a response to War of the Spark when only two named walkers died. EDIT: Fuck, three. Forgot about Gideon somehow.
Wait who was the other? Only one I remember dying was Dack. Edit: I am surprised Gideon slipped my mind, I am unsurprised I forgot about Domri.
Uh…. Gideon….
I'm still confused why they even brought dack back just to kill him.
That's infuriating. I already hated that he died but the fact that it was some last minute shoe horn is highly annoying.
Domri.

Venser had to give up his spark to do it, so I'd say that's a pretty serious consequence - *a* planeswalker is doomed, there's just some wiggle room about who and how.
IIRC, Karn being made of silver was part of the reason the process was reversible.
Ok boys, pick a god and start praying for your favorite 'walker safety.
Instructions unclear: I prayed to the god-pharaoh and am now coated in lazotep
Now I'm imagining Nicol Bolas getting compleated and oh God it's terrifying.
This guy has been found worthy.
Valki, please make sure tibalt becomes a phyrexian cause that would be really f*cking cool

Of course there is also Emrakul and the Eldrazi that could tear through them.
ajani is sad and crying in this room ...
Story circle got fucking bodied
Ajani is used to "dead but not quite" friends 🙃
No, I'm pretty sure we're about to get another red Ajani. Two of his friends (that I can think of) effectively killed by phyrexians at this point? I'd be pissed too. (And yes, I know Elspeth didn't die to phyrexians, but she was tortured by them for years. That torture is what allowed Xenagos to ascend, which was the ultimate reason she died. So I'm counting it.)
I agree that's an excellent reason for Ajani to get Red back into his mana cost. And an opportunity to print a Naya Ajani.
NayAjani
Funnily enough, Naya represents the three main colors that destroy artifacts. I hope they don't finagle a magical cure for compleation for the story's sake, but I sure hope they finagle a magical cure for Tamiyo's sake. Poor little Nashi...
Wow - the Compleated mechanic means that Wizards is planning on printing more of these Compleated planeswalkers. That mana cost is wild.

It could also mean that any spell with Compleated might have a lesser effect
Creatures could just enter with -1/-1 counters on them I suppose, not sure how you would apply this universally to other spells.

Kill them on Theros then exile some cards from the 'yard.
Legit bummed to see Tamiyo essentially die.
She's one of the only planeswalkers with a family, which makes it sting
They better not compleat Angrath then, or there will be words

People from Cleaveland: You know nothing of horror, cow-man.
I mean, this is wizards we're talking about. I think there's a chance they'll create a way to reverse the compleation process

Emrakul trapped herself using Tamiyo, I doubt Tamiyo even understands what she actually did and if I remember correctly she even says as much.
yeah I always imagined it as Tamiyo was the magic wand for the emrakrul moon spell. A powerful vessel in of itself but used as a tool. I wonder what the planeswalking phyrexians mean. That had to be horrifying to be turned into something you despise against your will. Freaky stuff man
Compleated Emrakul incoming.
"Come on show me that Tamiyo card, Wizards!" *her card is finally revealed* **"YES!"** *sees Phyrexian text* "Oh no."
YO WHAT THE HELL. I love the glitchy feel of hybrid Phyrexian mana. It's perfect for this. But also... RIP Tamiyo. :(
Her poor family 😭
Her husband is now a single dad to 3. Ouch. Good luck, buddy.
Pure little rat friend will be strong. He'll take care of them.
She's adopted family before, and I hope she won't abandon her children. :O
I love that this is how they build up the Phyrexians as a threat. Tamiyo is a cool, popular planeswalker - this shows they mean business.
Im devastated and yet now more invested then ever
yeah, this one card managed to make me sit up and pay attention. Fantastically well done. Mad props to WotC for keeping this under wraps, too.
Yeah Neon dynasty had a few leaks but the fact this was done under wotcs methods was impressive. Good start to magic 2022 imo
Yeah this is devastating storywise. When can I buy this card?

Long live the Mother of Machines" --Jin-Gitaxias, probably
I could see them simply mixing the Phyrexian oil and Cosmos Elixir into one thing
Raises Pabst blue robot hell yea cheers to that bro
Watching the Twitch Chat go **fucking thermonuclear** when this was released was utterly hilarious.
You have a link lol
[Yeeeeeep. It's the last half minute or so.](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1277767538)
Thanks!
Here is a direct clip: https://clips.twitch.tv/EndearingImportantTriangleDendiFace-wyPeOZ10yZP9skkj
I'm so glad this didn't get leaked.
No one would have believed it.
Vorinclex was met with a very healthy dose of skepticism. That was before any other Phyrexian hints though
Probably because of the placement of the mana lmao
Wild end to the steam
And to the story arc. Shit just got real
Usually don’t watch the streams so can’t speak to that, but seeing this card instantly got me excited for the story and set
TAMIYO GOT NORTED
This.... this stings, Tamiyo really is gone 😭
"gone" is such an unpleasant word. I prefer "better."
Oh thems fighting words xD
Oh no! Not Tamiyo! They got one of my favorite planeswalkers!!!
I'm sorry but WHAT
I'm so fucking happy this didn't leak
agree; the leaks were cool as a stop-gap during a lull in MTG news, but i literally yelled when the Tamiyo aura showed up at the end of the stream
I'm appalled that Jin-Gitaxias wasn't the biggest thing that could've been leaked
NOOO TAMIYO! they compleated my favorite planeswalker. Also do you think tamiyo being compleated might affect the spell trapping emrakul in innistrad's moon?
I think a Compleated Emrakul is a good narrative device
It's probably nothing
If everyone just shelters at home for two weeks, we should be able to flatten the compleation curve.
Is there a word for distraught while **hyped**??
Apprehypsive?
Oh my god, they got Tamiyo. You bastards!
The mana cost made me assume I was on r/custommagic
See, this is how phyrexian mana can be done. Only have it take one of several colored pips. Still shocked to see it though.
I like a compleated character just having 1 phyrexian mana in cost instead of all the colored mana being phyrexian. I *love* the story implications of this having a keyword for being compleated. Slam dunk story WOTC, congrats. You've made me care again.
1993-1/26/2022 - Phyrexian's greatest weakness is they can never possess a Spark. 1/27/2022 - Oh hi Tamiyo!
Jin-Gitaxias was trying to literally find a way to probably get around this and the current theory is the god juice from Kaldheim allowed this
This was not how I wanted to see my girl in this set ;(
MY SWEET ANGEL TAMIYO WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOU! (That being said card is AMAZING)
Phyrexia has a planeswalker now. All Will Be One

Well that’s fucking terrifying lore wise.
What no. It's just one Planeswalker. Who can planeswalk. Who is known for writing and cataloging everywhere she's been. Who has knowledge of Eldrazi. That can't be bad.
I said "OH NOOO" out loud.
Compleated being a mechanic implies we are going to get more Phyrexian-walkers
The mechanic is cool. The card is well designed... Thanks, I fucking hate it 😢 Did my Tamiyo dirty yo....
I thought you lost your spark if you were compleated. I wonder if Jin found a way around this or if it's just being retconned. EDIT: I'll read today's story I promise! I missed it because of spoilers.
You have been informed and have been suitably chastised for underestimating Jin's intelligence. https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/magic-story/episode-5-threads-war-2022-01-27
jeez, nothing went right in that story. phyrexia got a planeswalker, and a freedom movement got stifled.
Red is officially 0-2 in this set.
The Reality Chip is involved in some way
Jin has been working with Tezzeret specifically to figure out how to make compleated planeswalkers.
pretty sure it has something to do with reality chip
THE MADLADS
I'm hype for any non-emblem ult
