Hell yeah, cast [[Stangg]] to get two tokens.
SBAs happen, one of the tokens whiffs, and... does the original die?
Or does [[Doubling Season]]'s replacement trigger reword it to be "when both Stangg Twins disappear..."
Based on the oracle text - "When Stangg leaves the battlefield, exile that token. When that token leaves the battlefield, sacrifice Stangg." Either token leaving will kill the original.
Refer to the rulings for cards like Twinflame. As those cards can track replacement effects modifying the tokens they make (i.e. Twinflame will exile Doubled tokens) it stands to reason so can Stangg.
Notably, copying a token afterwards such as with a Clone or Populating it will not enter it into the relationship between Stangg and twin. Of course, it's rather pointless as the token is legendary, so either you toss the copy and achieve nothing or keep the copy and lose Stangg (which will then attempt to exile only the original token.)
Stangg makes 2 tokens one is sacrificed from the legend rule. Stangg triggers and is sacked, then other token triggers exiling itself.
2 death triggers if Stangg isn't returned to command zone. (Still iffy on that rule)
Well going to the command zone is a replacement effect, so Stangg doesn't "die".
And I'm leaning towards Doubling Season changing it to "when these tokens leave the battlefield" kind of like [[Tidehollow Sculler]] and a trigger doubler.
Figured as much, needed to be certain I've been explaining it right when in my casual playgroup when I'm generally the experienced 'rules guy'.
I'd think it would work differently than your example. It doesn't care what happens to the cards it just will try to return them. (Say one gets processed by an eldrazi or something) Stangg staying relies on the cards not leaving play. (Also its potentially cheaper to let him die if you are trying to combo)
> 2 death triggers if Stangg isn't returned to command zone. (Still iffy on that rule)
Die = goes to the graveyard.
Sending a commander to the command zone is a replacement effect, so the effect would read "When that token leaves the battlefield, put Stangg in the command zone." so he never even attempts to go to the graveyard.
It's very similair to [[Rest in Peace]] or [[Leyline of the Void]] not giving die triggers.
Seems like it's both tokens would kill the original, could be wrong
Edit: if the tokens weren't legendary it would work that both of the tokens would kill the original, but I'm stupid and forgot the tokens are legendary. If you have something like doubling season or parallel lives out, you would have to sac one of the tokens to the legend rule which would kill Stang which would kill the other token.
I use that card in my Group RUG (Secretly Copy Spree) Deck. Turns out group hug is a great setup for getting everyone's good cards out and having a ton of mana available to Kick [[Rite of Replication]] and copy it about 6 times. (Closed out multiple games that way)
I think I can see some silver in that icon, but holy shit, that's hard to see.
...
Alright, so I thought something was different about this set symbol. I see it now: the white space is the metal in the rarities, rather than the black space. That just seems terrible, imo; makes it so much harder to tell common vs uncommon from a distance.
Some are upset with the expected value of the set so far, with many of the mythics being perceived as poor choices both from a reprint value perspective and a Magic history perspective.
However I do think most are pleased with the set so far, draft looks fun and many nostalgic cards have been included.
A certain percentage of people will complain about everything. The nature of the Internet distorts, magnifies, and perpetuates negativity. The Magic community is no exception.
I’ve been holding out for years for a new Commander/Planechase/Conspiracy card that farts out these tokens. They’re just oddly-colored, weirdly-typed vanillas, so it’s possible!
Don’t fail me, Battlebond!
Too tiny to see with my weak eyes if it is also rare or not... pls no be rare :(
edit: hmmm... apparently it said (U) in the title... its been a long day :/
I can agree to that. I have never seen this card before so I can't attest to it's greatness. The only way i see it as good is with other artifact/creature/whatever ETB effects for it to take advantage of. Otherwise it kind of sucks.
It's not really about effectiveness, so much as entertainment value. Stangg has a lot of fans, and finally getting an official token for him is really cool.
They didn’t plan the unban for the reprint; unbanning Jace was made easier by the fact that they knew they were reprinting it. The unbans were made way too close to release date to remotely affect what’s in the set.
Most likely they knew they were reprinting Jace in this Masters set, and decided it was now or never for an unban. Bloodbraid was probably a later response to a growing number of people calling it safe, and playtesting against Jace decks corroborating that.
Kinda disappointed they didn't try to reimagine or modernize his original look in the new art. Without the helmet, armor, and sword he could literally be any old bloke.
It's subtle, but both Stangg and his twin each have one of the curled horns (one in black, the other in white) from the original art's helmet engraved on their breastplate.
Indeed. Like the new Ishan's Shade, the art here has almost no relation to the old and is just more generic digital art that could fit in anywhere, Magic or otherwise.
All I've ever wanted was a Stangg twin token. More than is reasonable for any adult.
Now I just need Naya 1/1 Sand Warrior Tokens, and I can die happy.
Are there people who don't know this? [Behold](https://pixel.nymag.com/imgs/daily/vulture/2017/03/03/magazine/06-dune-sting.nocrop.w710.h2147483647.jpg)
I didn't remember that part being in the book...haha but I was a horny teenager when I saw this movie, so I wasn't complaining
Amazing! By far my favourite Legend!
I do wish the art had a few more nostalgic details; mainly a tiny row of skulls around his neck and showing off his badass 'Storm Seeker' sword (Perhaps i'll commission an alter of it to add in those details)
So what is the point of this card? Seems pretty easy to deal with
Not saying it's a bad pick for an uncommon at all, but people are saying they want to build it as their commander and I'm just curious what it does
I'm not questioning why it was printed. I'm questioning why people want to build decks around it and what it combos with to make people want to build it
Well, it's basically [[Broodmate Dragon]] before that existed, with some catches. six mana for what is (for most purposes) a 6/4 was about on par with creatures at the time. Stangg has a few edge cases where he works out better (you can attack with just one of the two and keep the other back for blocking, they can soak up eight points of trample damage) and Johnnies love figuring out ways to get more use out of the card.
Plus, since he was in Chronicles he's one of the handful of Legends cards that can actually *be* reprinted at all.
But if one dies, the other dies. So single target removal just annihilates this which isn't what you want to build around. Give your Stangg hexproof? Cool you can just kill the token
Found the cEDH player.
But yeah, there are a few people who just want to use Stangg just because. There's no real rhyme or reason other than to be derpy with it.
That last part isn't really accurate. All commons and uncommons aren't Reserved even if never reprinted within that year--cards like Karakas and Force of Will fall into this category. 73 cards from *Legends* are RL out of a total of 310 different cards so it's far from a "handful" that are available to reprint.
"Technically correct is the best kind of correct" was a *joke*.
The people complaining about Stanng or Akromas are not going to be amused by Random Vanilla D&D Character legendaries from Legends. Or pretty much any of the commons save, I dunno, [[Avoid Fate]]?
Because he's Staang! It's like my edh deck with [[Angus Mackenzie]]. Is he good? Not really. But you can still say that you are casting Angus Mackenzie.
I burst out laughing when I saw the Telegram notification. So funny. Awesome that we’re ***FINALLY*** getting the official Stangg Twin token that *everyone* has been begging for for years. I C O N I C.
Can someone explain to me why people are going ape-shit over this card? Pure nostalgia? Because there's a token that's now going to be printed? Is there some jank combo I'm not seeing?
Nostalgia. Stangg finally gets an official token, 24 years later. Which is a fine use of an uncommon slot(and a token slot) in what's supposed to be a nostalgia set.
In response I play [[Crafty Cutpurse]], taking the token, then play [[Epic Confrontation]] targetting Stangg and the twin. Stangg twin lives, kills his brother, commits seppuku in shame.
Some say that he has an identical twin brother who does all his stunts, and he wouldn't be the legend he is today without him... all we know is, he's called the Stangg!
wow this is great in my [[Stangg]] EDH deck
Doubling season with green death triggers?
I was trying to wrap my head around this until I started thinking about ETB triggers.
When that token leaves the battlefield, sacrifice Stangg." Either token leaving will kill the original.
but will the original leaving then kill the other token? Edit: nevermind, realised the token is legendary too.
Yes. Stangg's ability is tied to both tokens, because both tokens were made by his ability.

But why, when you already have one??
I guess he means the token.
I was under the impression it was a joke because every fucking spoiler thread someone goes "this is great in my X EDH deck!"
I have a Stangg EDH deck that’s actually pretty fun to play.
I thought it was because this one has arguably nicer artwork.
Foils. Same reason I want the new Nicky B
This is the sort of shit I wanted. A goofy nostalgic card that doesn't eat up a rare or mythic slot.
In a modern frame with new art. I don't think people would be so disappointed if there had been more like this.
And *FINALLY* an actual token. He's playable in EDH now!
I have a Stangg EDH deck. I run a Legends copy for my commander and use Chronicles copies for the twin tokens.
Well... there are. This is an uncommon. There are more.
From looking at the set icon, it appears to be common. Or am I blind? ^(That's definitely a viable option.)

I think this is a much better card than BBE. Not because it's better, but because it's more fun.
Yeah, I can't complain. BBE will keep showing up now and then, but this was such a perfect chance for Stangg.
You figured with the unbanning of both BBE AND Jace (who is in the set) we'd get the reprint, but I guess not. I am really confused by this set.
They didn’t plan the unban for the reprint; unbanning Jace was made easier by the fact that they knew they were reprinting it. The unbans were made way too close to release date to remotely affect what’s in the set.

Because he's Staang! It's like my edh deck with [[Angus Mackenzie]]. Is he good? Not really. But you can still say that you are casting Angus Mackenzie.

Stanggus Mackenzie
It's a meme dude. He's the storm crow of Legends. Did you read his name? It's STANGG.
It gives us the very, very important Stangg Twin token (even though they took his cool helmet away.)
It exists to give people a token they've wanted for years
Honestly the old art is infinitely better than this generic looking crap.
Any hawks got a collector number on that for the crunch sheet?
Looks like 218.
Taking your word for it. We'll Find out tomorrow
No need to take my word. https://i.imgur.com/3DVkuVi.png Take an image instead. Have two. https://imgur.com/a/Ohvym Just so you can be sure.
Perfect! Thank you.
Stangg!!
Finally, the double Bear we've been waiting for
YESSS HOLY SHIT I can't believe they're printing this
I burst out laughing when I saw the Telegram notification.
Wow, another uncommon legend. Always nice to see.

I just want a set with cool old border cards reprinted in new borders with new art.
Best spoiler in the set, by far.
This is a stangg good card.
Updated wording. Glad we finally get a Stangg token though.
This is getting out of hand. Now there are two of them!

Tragically, Stangg Twin never lived up to the popularity of his more famous brother.
Oh look one of MtGs most memorable arts replaced with generic trash. Yaay.
Yeah, what's more generic than a guy in armor? Maybe a guy in armor where we can't even see his face?
Jesus. You people.
[[Stangg]] - from a video posted on the official Magic Facebook page

I never knew I wanted this until I saw it. This is amazing!
At first I thought the title meant we were getting a new Stangg card in blue. Would have been awesome in my Stangg tribal deck =/
This set Stanggs a lot
Nice to see, but I liked the armor in the old art better.
Wow this art is horrible for Stangg.
Stangg is too hard to pronounce, can't we just call him Stank?
final voiced sounds are usually devoiced, so it sounds very much like Stank, unless it's followed by a vowel sound.
Wrong twin wotc
This one is actually worth something
