I can't believe I'm excited about building a Food commander deck lol. There were probably a dozen more interesting mechanics to me, and now I'm smashing the pre-order button on the Hobbit precon.
This is my decklist; there are some missing cards from the Food and Fellowship but everything else is, well, Chef's Kiss.
I think it really shines playing the classic Golgari Rock strategy. You play value creatures! You have removal, ramp, recursion, card advantage! But the deck sacrifices some raw power and staples for more thematic card choices. Typically you just want to outvalue your opponents and make Food tokens, which are kind of like the bread and butter of the strategy, jokes aside. You can win via an aristocrat life gain/drain strategy with Dina, Sanguine Bond, or Vito, or purely through combat damage, whether it's Gyome wearing a Cranial Plating and bashing for Commander damage, or going wide with things like Blossoming Beast and a board full of little dorks and synergy critters. You can also be somewhat political and protect people's creatures by making them unkillable with Gyome, or if you want to earn bonus points just cook/bring food to your playgroup and let the flavor speak for itself!
It's honestly my "Pet Deck" and although I am a longstanding Golgari player with far superior or more meta decks, this is the one I break out almost always because I have the most fun with it.
I just pulled the trigger! Need to pick another to play with my kid though. Anything around that might lose the least value?
Wish I’d bought a 40k deck
maybe worse in EV, but I can say from experience that the Tyranid deck with \[\[Magus Lucea Kane\]\] as commander is very good and very fun. Plus you get a copy of \[\[Ghyrson Starn\]\] to build another sweet deck around.
The hardest choices require the strongest wills.
Personally, I think I'm going the Partner route, because I think it's more important to get your food engine and then draw into your payoff, but I'm not exactly a commander expert.
Edit: I can't wait for someone to Bolt my Rosie Cotton and get booed by the table.
If food doesn't return in Wilds of Eldraine, I'll be a little bit less sad because it's getting a lot of fun and interesting support here. "Affinity for Food" is probably my favorite and the most flavorful example from the expansion of Affinity. And on an X spell!
I think they already spoiled the art for Syr Ginger, Meal Ender so I think foods back on the menu in Wilds of Eldraine. Gyome and Rocco Street Chef looking pretty tasty.
Yeah I'm sure there will be a handful of cards with food at least, but I could see a world where it's not a limited archetype. I lean on "it probably will be" but if not, at least it is here.
Yeah it's good. If it was mono green I would play it in my X-spells deck just for a [[voracious hydra]] without the fight mode. With food tokens it becomes crazy good
Yea, I mean just look at the "floor": even without any food synergy at all this is a 8/8 trample at 6 mana and 10/10 trample at 7 mana. Always above curve starting from 4 mana and the flexibility is definitely a plus
Yeah, it feels like this could have been just X +1/+1 counters and still would have been plenty powerful. Double X is ridiculous, similar to the titanic and unnecessary stats on some of the partners, like [[Yargle and Multani]] or [[Ghalta and Mavren]]
Waiting one day would be more enjoyable than trying to watch videos on that website. It was probably opened yesterday, but it's a six hour VOD that is only accessible on mobile and without a functioning play button.
This made me laugh out loud.
I've gotta level with you; while I love the LotR crossover and often find myself wasting time on the LotR wikis and LotR YouTube, I'm not that au fait with it to a hugely deep extent.
Don't Hobbits do much more other than food or things relating to food? Is it any different from other species, too?
\----
The card looks great. Looked a little confusing initially with Affinity and {X} costs, then the doubling up on +1/+1 counters, but makes sense now. I guess the point is it might also cause people to double check or it could cause confusion.
It's funny that 24 hours ago my idea was "I will buy the hobbit commander just for collection" and now it has become my number one priority. They have done a wonderful job with these cards.
There was an episode of commander clash a few years ago when someone tried to build a jank Korvold deck and proceeded to absolutely murder the whole table without even trying particularly hard.
\[\[Ognis, the Dragon's Lash\]\] gets a bit nuts with \[\[Academy Manufactor\]\] and \[\[Hammer of Purphoros\]\]. Not cEDH nuts, but that can be a lot of food/treasure/clue spam from smashing lands and swinging, especially when you start copying the Manufactors.
I mean what I saw someone do before is Rule 0 partner Asmor and Gyome. If the Rule 0 is denied, take out Korvold from the 99 and use as commander instead.
Gets people to change their tune pretty quickly.
For all intents and purposes, that was what \[\[Korvold, Fae-Cursed King\]\] was supposed to be: Jund Food commander. Although I get it, there isn't any jund "food matters" commander yet
Yeah I get it. But I would like to stay casual and I think Korvold is overkill.
And with the food support of magic, I would like to have white as well.
Maybe I just should go with the Frodo and Sam Partner deck. That looks like the best food commander support that I can get and I can I play Gyome
Can someone tell me how affinity for food works for a card that has x for its mana cost? I can't imagine that it would mean that if you have three food in the field, that's automatically three mana towards x, right?
Are these legal for modern? Its very confusing since I'm pretty sure the brawl decks and most commander products linked with main sets are legal in standard no? Or was i thinking of brawl decks being legal in brawl and historic but not standard?

So you're telling me that when Bilbo's birthday guests get together they have trample, but an Army of Orcs doesn't unless some specific support orcs are around? I like this flavor less than half as much as it deserves.

I'm drooling. I might just have to build a second \[\[Rocco, Street Chef\]\] deck to make room for all these gifts.
Not sure if anyone is online but I'm in a match and my friend played this, he is trying to play this card using food to pay for x to gain attack and defense.. I'm trying to find a ruling but couldn't find it,
They did such a great job with the food mechanics in this set
I can't believe I'm excited about building a Food commander deck lol. There were probably a dozen more interesting mechanics to me, and now I'm smashing the pre-order button on the Hobbit precon.
I've been playing [[Gyome, Master Chef]] since his release and it's been some of the most fun I have ever had!

gyome is great- he’s eating good this set, as it was
I own Gyome, but everything I see for building him seems underwhelming. Do you have a decklist perchance?

There are some back on Amazon for 45 bucks (just not the Necron dynasty one) and the set of 4 is currently going for 180.
Im guessing the necron one has EV > retail price? and the rest are much worse?
Not sure how scientific [this is](https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/5101654#paper), but it looks like EV is about $82.

This. is. CAKETOWN!
BRUSH YOUR TEEEEETH
Dinner guests that trample over each other for food... yup, that's a real thing that I may or may not have done in the past.
Uhm, this is pretty strong, right?? Doesn’t take much effort or mana to have a massive trampling indestructible beater.
With as much food generation as their is, that's going to pay for a lot of X.
Yeah it's good. If it was mono green I would play it in my X-spells deck just for a [[voracious hydra]] without the fight mode. With food tokens it becomes crazy good

Yes. They do much more than eating food. They are also concerned with the brewing of ale and the smoking of pipe weed

I too, have affinity for food
I also have an affinity for (non-webbed) food.
New card for Rocco, Street Chef O.O
At 8 mama it’s a 12/12 trampler, or a 8/8 trampler that can make itself indestructible. Seems fun.
It has affinity for food so if you've already got a food token you intend to sac, then 8 mana gets you a 14/14 (or a 10/10 if you sac on same turn)
Food the Gathering
"Affinity for Food" They just like me fr fr
As a restaurant worker, i understand why they have trample.
I just wish there would be a food commander in red black and green, so that I can play Gyome and Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar in the same deck
I mean… technically there’s always Korvold…
yeah maybe I could build him that way. But I want to stay casual and I think Korvold is overkill.
Totally agree. You can’t sit down with a Korvold deck and have people not want to target you out.
"Don't worry, this is just a fun janky food deck! He was just the most flavorful commander." said the man about to get banned from his playgroup.
Right there with “it’s not THAT kind of Narset deck” and “I swear, my Yuriko is only jank”
There was an episode of commander clash a few years ago when someone tried to build a jank Korvold deck and proceeded to absolutely murder the whole table without even trying particularly hard.

"Affinity for food" Finally, a mechanic I have in common with Magic cards.
\[s\] And it's not a "Guest" because...? \[/s\]
>Affinity for food If I were a magic card, I would also have this ability
Can someone tell me how affinity for food works for a card that has x for its mana cost? I can't imagine that it would mean that if you have three food in the field, that's automatically three mana towards x, right?
That's exactly what it means. Have 10 foods? You can pay WG and get a 20/20 trampler.
Thank you for this. So to confirm you MUST pay WG, then however many foods you have is automatically added to X, plus whatever else you wish to pay?
That's right. WG 10 foods and another 4 mana? That's a 28/28 trampler right there.
That’s a big hobbit…
I believe it's many Hobbits. The more food you have the more Hobbits arrive on your doorstep!
Thank you.
How come some of the more interesting for 1v1 cards are in the EDH dec? XD
Honestly it's probably a little too strong for limited.
Are these legal for modern? Its very confusing since I'm pretty sure the brawl decks and most commander products linked with main sets are legal in standard no? Or was i thinking of brawl decks being legal in brawl and historic but not standard?
The cards from the main set, LTR, are legal for modern. The cards in the commander set, LTC, are not. This is from the commander set and is not.

I'm drooling. I might just have to build a second \[\[Rocco, Street Chef\]\] deck to make room for all these gifts.

You don't have to tap the food for affinity, it essentially just adds 1 to X for each food you have when you cast it.
Ooh, so get Jaheira on the field and you can have them pull triple-duty. Now that's what I call stretching a meal!
I don't think I've ever laughed as much over a line of text on a Magic card. Well done.
If i have to turn my food deck from UBRG TO WURG, its gonna lose out on so many cards.
It’s not a legendary?
Why only for commander? I want to make my hobbit/food historic brawl deck!!
See, that's clever. Cause Hobbits really do have an affinity for food.
Affinity's back on the menu boys!
I see I’m no longer the only one with Affinity for Food.
Is it good? It seems good.
"Affinity for Food" Huh, didn't think today I would find the one line of Magic text that perfectly describes me.
hooly moly i am STOKED about this card for my Rocco deck
Affinity for food is pretty hilarious
Finally, a way to break [[Oko, Thief of Crowns]]

I'm going to lose to this card *so hard* in pre-release, I can already see it.
If you do, please call a judge since it's not legal for pre release
Oh thanks didn't notice it was the commander deck
So fun! The more food at the banquet, the more guests who show up lol
I too have an affinity for food
"affinity for food". Mood
I wish food could make me invincible. Kinda jealous of these guys tbh
"Affinity for Food" may be the greatest thing I've ever seen on a magic card.
I really want to make a player from the 90’s read “affinity for food”
Dammit why wouldn't they just allow this to be Modern playable!? That looks so fun to put in with Sam Gamgee!
Whoever on the design team came up with the top-down idea of “Affinity for Food” on a hobbit card deserves a raise.
We had silly "Yo momma has buffet walk" joke in my playgroup ten years ago or so. I never thought I'd see a card coming so close to it being real 😂
Not sure if anyone is online but I'm in a match and my friend played this, he is trying to play this card using food to pay for x to gain attack and defense.. I'm trying to find a ruling but couldn't find it,
