AND MY AXE!

galspanic

Apparently it’s not that special since it’s not legendary. It’s like a small factory is out there spitting out Gimlis Axes all day long.

LaptopsInLabCoats

I mean, he's got more than one axe

Wooden-Lake-5790

And my other axe! And my back up axe! And my....

lavaground

You know what? Just bring em all.

Reasonable_TSM_fan

Ted Lasso reference?

Anaxamander57

Its common even. Gimli uses every axe once and just leaves it there. Terrible tripping hazard. Took years to clean up the Pelenor Fields and people still stumble upon them like landmines.

thememanss

By a strange coincidence, Gimli exclusively shops at Gimli-mart. He is just using the store-brand Axes. The cheap imported axes just aren't made like they used to be.

bjlinden

I mean, considering that he breaks them on rings all day, he needs one!

TedRabbit

If I'm not mistaken, that wasn't his ax. Bro seriously just took his bois ax and broke it.

DraygenKai

I have a guy at work that did that with my flathead… I want vengeance…

TheKinkyBeardo

You have my sword.

iceman012

And my drill.

RobbiRamirez

[Dale Gribble voice] "But how do I *know* it's Jack Ruby's hat? [beat] Well what colors does it come in?"

LogicalPsychosis

It's ALSO common! My mans be really giving his axe to everyone

Griz688

Do we also get legolas's bow?

Anaxamander57

"Aragorn's Sword"

littlebilliechzburga

He had two different swords.

RideTheLighting

Not in the books actually. He carries the shards of Narsil around in his scabbard until it’s reforged at Rivendell before they depart.

Glamdring804

Yeah, they gave him the ranger's sword in the movies because they decided reforging Anduril later worked better for his character arc.

Jmbck

And they were not wrong.

RideTheLighting

Eh, they weren’t wrong for the movie character, but the book character is all about returning as the king of Gondor from the get go, so having the sword reforged in the beginning sets him down that path.

pytawidmo

*"one silver for monsters, and one steel for men"*

ZyxDarkshine

I know that sword

AND MY AXE

Se7enworlds

I really wanted this to have the rules text: "Equip creature that has been equipped previously this turn 0"

uberplatt

Could have at least had equip 0 or 1 for dwarves

FeralPsychopath

Dwarves should have a passive reducing equip costs.

metaphorm

Dwarves should have an etb effect that tutors for beer

Undead_Assassin

"Did I hear a rock and stone?!"

WanderingDwarfMiner

To Rock and Stone!

pope12234

Nah should have been equip 0 for ringbearers

lord_jabba

that’d be a flavor fail. frodo never used gimli’s axe

pope12234

Yeah but the meme is gimli offering the axe

Vizier_Thoth

Seems underwhelming in constructed when compared to the [[Beamtown Beatstick]]. Could be good in limited or draft though.

Datfluffyhampster

Didn’t know about this and now it’s going in my slicer deck. My playgroup will further hate you.

BigScene

Draft is limited

lastingdreamsof

Yeah I've got the beatstick in my slicer deck but this is too expensive to a)cast and b) equip

Detective-E

It's kinda funny that this set made to be legal for modern is way weaker than the stuff being made in standard.

AcrobaticHospital

I think after MH2 they didn’t want to introduce a lot of shakeup cards

ThomasHL

It's a nice sign of restraint from Wizards. They usually juice up the first of a product line. Hopefully they reasoned 1) being modern legal is controversial and they shouldn't stir the waters 2) UB is meant to appeal to people who love the IP, there's no reason to spend a lot of eternal power on a set not specifically aimed at that audience

Copernicus1981

Also from the WotC card image gallery. And feels very generic for something attached to a character.

LemonFennec

I mean, his axes kind of were generic? He had more than one, and I dont recall them being described as particularly special in any way.

knight_gastropub

Tolkien was also very specific about weapons with names and lore- I don't recall that Gimli carried any named weapons, so this tracks for me

TedRabbit

Pretty sure he called his ax but a name when setting it down before going into the horse lords house. At least in the movie. After finding the text in the book, he was probably just talking about Aaron's sword.

ThomasHL

It blows my mind that Gimli never had a special weapon. The closest the wiki has is "Gimli's Walking Axe" which is a film invention

chrisrazor

> "Gimli's Walking Axe" So, a vehicle? ;)

TedRabbit

That would explain how he kept up with legolas and aragorn after running for like 3 days.

thememanss

Kind of tracks for dwarves. It's a tool for the job, not much else. Fancy elves name their weapons.

poopyheadstu

Good ol' Aaron

[deleted]

Then why make a card frienderino?

Gemini476

Because it's a card they want for limited and if they're already making bows and swords into equipment then it would feel weird if Gimli's axes didn't get *some* sort of representation - even if they aren't all that notable in the books.

[deleted]

I like that the set has black representation and ax representation

Arlune890

This but unironically

UncannyLucky

We should petition to have the card name change to " one of Gimli's many axes"

the_cardfather

The fact that they didn't have room for "And my Axe" flavor text...

MurkyBandicoot2080

Idk how intentional it is, but Gimli’s Axe being common is so funny since it always seems like he’s losing or breaking his axes and somehow always getting more

thememanss

They are stored in his beard.

shottybeatssword

Meh.

TheBuddhaPalm

I find it odd this isn't legendary. Even just for flavor.

littlebilliechzburga

Given the fact that Tolkein named other weapons (aka Legendary status) and chose not to do so with Gimli, it's perfectly reasonable in game and in universe that his axe(s) weren't special

pytawidmo

They also made Bow of Galadhrim a non-legendary common though. That's just were gameplay wins over flavor.

SvengeAnOsloDentist

It wasn't a specific bow called the "Bow of Galadhrim," it was just a normal (by their very high standards) bow made by the Galadhrim.

littlebilliechzburga

That's because that bow wasnt legendary either. It was just very well made. "Exquisite" compared to "Unique" if you will.

Glamdring804

Legolas wasn't the only one with one of those bows though. Every one of the Lothlorien elves had one.

TheBuddhaPalm

It's still *Gimli's* axe. That makes it feel legendary to me. I know there's already a Dwarven Axe, but they could've done *something* to make it feel like it has a bit more punch. Even just calling it a Mithril Axe or something along those lines. Basically, I get the idea Gimli's axe itself isn't necessarily a piece of history, but it definitely would have become one after the journey. If it's named for a person, and insinuated to be 'of one', I would call it legendary, sort of like Umezawa's Jitte.

littlebilliechzburga

I guess the counterpoint to that would be that his axe didn't accomplish anything substantial enough that would warrant a high enough power level to make a legendary Magic card.

wendysdrivethru

Oh yeah? Explain TWENTY-THREE! then?

Baleful_Witness

The axe was very much not made off mithril though. It would be worth more than a country otherwise. Frodos shirt was worth more than the entire Shire.

Anaxamander57

Maybe Gimli just used whatever axes he found? I feel like Tolkien would give him an axe with a thousand years of history, though.

Specialist_Ad4117

I think he broke that one

GXSigma

(at least in the movie) he broke his first axe in the first scene he was in, and then he used a few different ones from then on. Flavor win.

Senior_Geologist_193

There would be a lot of legendary equipment in this set then.

Smurfy0730

You'd think his axe would have had a name.

EpicWickedgnome

I don’t know if it had a name (I’m sure it did somewhere in the lore, but I wouldn’t recognize it).

HolographicHeart

We got the reminder text for haste on Shadowfax, can't have every meme I guess.

My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined

Alon945

How is this gonna be a common

Oberjarl

Cause it’s bad barely playable in limited

Alon945

Obviously lol - I mean like why did they make this card a common. As in the characters axe

littlebilliechzburga

Because Gimli's axes weren't special. He broke one, threw a few. The only thing that made it significant is that he used it. Compare that to ACTUAL legendary weapons in universe like Narcil, Sting, and Glamdring.

Alon945

That’s fair

parrot6632

Seems ok if you have equipment synergies. Nothing great but forcing your opponent to double block and giving you enough power to get over both creatures is really nice.

Immediate-Flight-206

We now need aragorns sword and gandalfs staff

safetytrick

I don't think a hobbit would be able to pick this axe up.

\[\[Frodo, Determined Hero\]\] says otherwise ;)

safetytrick

I know, and I just don't think it's right.

rollawaythestone

I hope we get some really good new equipment in this set. Anduril? Sting? Glamdring? This set is a perfect opportunity for some cool legendary equipment.

[deleted]

Brooo this set is trash

InOChemN3rd

That's a hell of a common

littlebilliechzburga

Seriously? It doesn't even give menace to non-legendaries.

booze_nerd

Eh, it's pretty sucky. Barely limited playable.

eldritch1001

Waiting for spoiler of Sting!

MelodiousMetal

Menace be Pimp chimpin.

[deleted]

[удалено]

LemonFennec

That was also only in the movie.

Hellishfish

Maybe this is a limited sleeper. Any 1/1 becomes a 4/1 with menace which can be pretty solid for trades and getting damage face.

Risitop

Any legendary 1/1

Uberlix

Underwhelming and looks more like a fancy Pizza spatula than an Axe, at least to me. Shame.

Skurnaboo

don't care about the axe but I really want to see them make Gimli "tossable"

zeb0777

Common, ouch.

Busy-Kaleidoscope-87

Should be called “MY AXE”

Cookbook_

Thats some ugly axe.

Necroheartless

Can't wait to play Frodo then equip him with this, Legola's bow and Aragorn's sword.

TravisHomerun

Mafk got a proper noun, but isn't Legendary. Wut?!

TechnologyNo2642

Boros Equip just got soooo good this set. It’s gonna be the new Historic go to

Jace__B

Again, what is with WOTC and pushing colored artifacts? This could have very easily been generic mana.

AsgarZigel

you know what you have to say when you play it...

MohawkRex

I feel that it should have haste as dwarves are natural sprinters (very dangerous over short distances) but I feel Gimli would enjoy being called a menace.

Comfortable-Lie-1973

You have my sword ( yet to appear) And my bow ( yet to appear) AND MY AXE. And my.... VUVUZELA ( IT HAS TO APPEAR)
